It's time for another Zack Snyder slow-motion extravaganza! Snyder's big sci-fi sequel "Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver" is now on Netflix, and the reactions ... well, they ain't great, folks. The first film, subtitled "A Child of Fire," didn't fare much better — it's currently sitting at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. But what about Part Two? Sadly, it seems to be doing even worse than the original flick. As of this writing, "Rebel Moon – Part Two" has a terrible 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. And if you're thinking, "Well, that's just the critics! What are regular people saying about the movie?", you should also know that the film's audience score is a less-than-great 52%. In short, people don't seem to like what Snyder is offering here. Snyder has always had a tenuous relationship with critics, but this seems to be one of his worst-reviewed films to date. Even his cartoon owl movie has...

Game, set… but there’s not much of a match. “Challengers,” a steamy tennis drama starring Zendaya and directed by Luca Guadagnino, is poised to lead the domestic box office without much in the way of competition.
The film, from Amazon MGM, is projected to collect $12 million to $15 million from 3,400 North American theaters in its opening weekend. Although those are modest projections for any nationwide release, it’s this weekend’s only major new movie and shouldn’t have trouble claiming first place from A24’s “Civil War,” the reigning champion. Last weekend, “Civil War” topped the box office for the second consecutive frame with $11.1 million and has grossed $70 million globally to date. Overall, the domestic box office is 20% behind the same point in 2023, according to Comscore.
The steamy, R-rated “Challengers” was originally slated to premiere at 2023’s Venice Film Festival and hit the big screen last fall. But the...

Justin Kuritzkes has back-to-back adaptations in the works.
The screenwriter has been one of Luca Guadagnino’s closest collaborators of late. His “Challengers” just premiered to rave reviews and he’s already set to adapt “Queer,” the novel originally written by William S. Burroughs, for the director as well. At the Los Angeles premiere of “Challengers,” the screenwriter spoke with us about adapting the novel as well as “City on Fire,” the first of a bestselling novel trilogy from Don Winslow, which Austin Butler will lead.
Adaptations are challenging, but Kuritzkes has a method to the madness. In our conversation, he teased what he’s working on and how he approaches IP. He revealed that “Queer” is something Guadagnino has wanted to make since he was a teenager when the book came out in 1985, “I was so touched and honored when he asked me to read it and to see...

Every fan of “The Big Lebowski” knows that line: The final eulogy for Steve Buscemi’s character, Donny, who loved bowling and exploring the beaches of Southern California as a surfer from La Jolla to Leo Carillo, and on up to Pismo.
But Donny is just one of the many dead characters in Buscemi’s filmography. In a wide-ranging Q&a with Rolling Stone film critic David Fear at the Sarasota Film Festival, Buscemi talked about the particularly high body count in his filmography.
“I learned to try to get parts where your character doesn’t get killed off too early in the film, and to get parts where your character is actually important to the story. Because it’s so easy to get cut out of films. I was cut out of three films in the space of a year. One by Stephen Frears, one by Gus Van Sant,...

When production designers Shona Heath and James Price were tasked with designing the dark comedy Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated movie about a woman whose resurrected with her infant’s brain, they had several key decisions to make. For starters, how would they represent the London mansion, which included the laboratory of mad scientist Dr. Baxter, played by Willem Dafoe? The answer turned out to be simple: They’d put human anatomy along the walls and ceiling.

Roses are red, violets are blue, two new movies will open in theaters on Valentine’s Day, but neither are expected to break through.
Paramount’s musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” is projected to collect $30 million to $35 million between Wednesday and President’s Day on Monday. Those ticket sales should be enough to lead over Sony’s comic book adventure “Madame Web,” which looks to generate $22 million to $25 million during the same six-day period.
Given the budgets of each film — “Bob Marley” cost $70 million and “Madame Web” cost $80 million, not including marketing — those aren’t especially encouraging estimates. Even worse, those anemic figures span six days, not the traditional three-day weekend.
The presence of two new offerings will be a welcome boost for cinemas. But it won’t be enough to revive the domestic box office as it remains down 15% from 2023. Comparisons to last year will be tough because...

Hulu has acquired rights to “The Contestant,” a documentary about an aspiring comedian who unknowingly becomes the most famous TV star in Japan.
Clair Titley directed the movie, which premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews. “The Contestant” will launch on Hulu in 2024.
The documentary tells the stranger-than-fiction story of Tomoaki Hamatsu, nicknamed Nasubi, who auditioned for a TV show in 1998. The premise of “Denpa Shonen: A Life in Prizes,” the series that eventually made him a household name in Japan, left Nasubi naked in an empty room for more than a year and tasked him with filling out magazine sweepstakes to earn food, clothes and other necessities. But he had no idea he was becoming wildly famous in Japan as the series was broadcast to more than 15 million people.

Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore Turn Tabloid Spectacle Into High Melodrama in ‘May December’ Trailer
Filmmaker Todd Haynes is back in his loosely-inspired-by bag for his new movie May December. Where 1998’s Velvet Goldmine excavated and toyed with the life and legacy of David Bowie, Haynes’ next film appears to draw inspiration from the seedy tabloid story of Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who had an affair with — and then married — her adolescent student, Vili Fualaau.
To be clear, May December — like Velvet Goldmine — is not an outright biopic, though biopics are used as a clever device in the new movie. Julianne Moore and Charles Melton play the couple,...

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have reteamed and the result, “Poor Things,” is being heralded as a new classic for the ages.
In “Poor Things,” Stone plays a young woman named Bella Baxter who is brought back to life by the “brilliant and unorthodox scientist” Dr. Goodwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
The reviews for the movie have been effusive in their praise and social media is hailing the film for embracing both Lanthimos’ brand of wackiness while also being extremely graphic.

The Weeknd, Lily-Rose Depp, and Blackpink’s Jennie have shared a new song, “One of the Girls,” which was recorded for an upcoming episode of The Idol. The track marks Jennie’s first non-Blackpink song since her 2018 effort “Solo.”
On the HBO series, Jennie plays Dyann, a backup dancer for Depp’s pop star protagonist, Jocelyn. “One of the Girls,” a mid-tempo, synth-led number, is the second song from The Idol that Depp has released following “World Class Sinner / I’m a Freak.” The video for the song includes of...

“The Idol” — HBO’s new series starring Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye as a Svengali-like guru who takes a pop star (Lily Rose-Depp) under his wing — premieres on June 4 after a full year of making headlines for its reportedly “chaotic” production, “toxic” set and, according to some, “sexual torture porn” content.
Here’s a timeline of all “The Idol” controversies that have beset the series, from the replacing of original director Amy Seimetz to reports from traumatized crew members to reception by critics, who, to date, have given it a dismal 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe may be about to change with ‘Black Adam’, but the Dwayne Johnson star vehicle is landing low on the hierarchy of critical reputation among the decade’s superhero releases of Warner Bros., reports ‘Variety’.
‘Black Adam’, as of Tuesday afternoon (U.S. Pacific Time), stands at a 32 per cent approval rating from the top critics on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Among the website’s broader group of approved critics, it is higher at 54 per cent.
Should the top critics number stand, according to ‘Variety’, it would mark the lowest such figure for a DC film since 2017’s ‘Justice League’, which netted a 23 per cent approval rating from top critics and was so reviled among fans that Warner Bros. had to order a reworked version, which arrived in the form of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ in 2021.

On August 5, ‘Bullet Train’ roared into theaters with a mixed reception from critics and a not-so-fresh rating of 59 on Rotten Tomatoes. Oscar winner Brad Pitt plays Ladybug, a trained killer ordered to collect a briefcase on board the fastest train in the world. He soon discovers competing assassins with connected objectives, each of them fighting to make it out alive.
The supporting cast includes fellow Oscar winner Sandra Bullock as well as Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry and Benito A Martínez Ocasio (also known as Bad Bunny). Directed by David Leitch for Sony Pictures and based on the Japanese novel “Maria Beetle” by Kōtarō Isaka, “Bullet Train” was one of the most anticipated films of the summer. HBO has shared the official trailer for its highly-anticipated documentary, The Princess, which chronicles the tumultuous public and private life of Princess Diana.
The new clip offers a compelling look at the film’s archival-heavy approach as it examines the media and the British public’s obsessive adoration and vilification of Diana, as well as the tension between the so-called “People’s Princess” and the old, conservative institution that is the British monarchy. There are also some insights into her turbulent marriage with Prince Charles, no more strikingly captured than...

Baz Luhrmann’s box-office-topping new movie Elvis does manage to show the powerhouse singer Big Mama Thornton (played by Shonka Dukureh) performing “Hound Dog,” a song she recorded in 1952, four years before Elvis Presley. But it leaves out two very significant players: songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote “Hound Dog” as teenagers for Thornton, and went on to write “Jailhouse Rock,” “You’re So Square (I Don’t Care),” “Trouble,” and other hits for Presley himself.

For the first time since “Spider-Man 3,” acclaimed director Sam Raimi has returned to the world of Marvel for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
The brand new sequel was written by Michael Waldron (“Loki”) and produced by Kevin Feige, serving as the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as well as the fifth film in Phase Four.
The film — which stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams – is obviously highly anticipated by fans, but what are the critics saying?
David Ehrlich of IndieWire praised the film, writing that it is “a violent, wacky, drag-me-to-several-different-hells at once funhouse of a film that nudges the franchise somewhere actually new.”
Hollywood Reporter’s John DeFore had a few issues with the film, but overall enjoyed the experience, stating that “though unsatisfying in some respects, the film is enough fun to...

Robert Eggers has done it again with “The Northman.”
The writer-director’s third feature film behind “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse” tells a Viking revenge story based on the same Scandinavian folk tale that inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”
The star-studded cast — including Alexander Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, and Björk — plus the grueling 87-day production, have propelled “The Northman” to a status of intrigue even before its release.
IndieWire’s Chief Film Critic David Ehlrich wrote, “All you need to know about The Northman — a 90 million viking revenge movie directed by Robert Eggers — is that every single moment of it feels like a 90 million viking revenge movie directed by Robert Eggers.”
While IndieWire Executive Editor of Film Kate Erbland said the film had her “flipping between ‘Hell Yes’ and ‘Oh No’ with startling regularity,” Deputy Managing Editor Ryan Lattanzio felt the film perhaps didn...

This year officially marks a decade since the release of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” which is the last time the Caped Crusader appeared onscreen in a live-action solo movie. Not that audiences were lacking Batman content: Ben Affleck played the Dark Knight in multiple DC Comics movies, including “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Justice League,” and “Suicide Squad.” (Affleck also appeared as Batman in director Zack Snyder’s long-awaited recut of “Justice League” last year.) There was even a time when Affleck was set to star and direct his own solo film featuring Batman, but the project that later was handed over to filmmaker Matt Reeves and, after Affleck stepped aside completely, star Robert Pattinson.
If you were one of the many people who couldn’t wait to see what Reeves and company had in store for this latest take on Batman, you’re in luck.

The long-awaited Ghostbusters: Afterlife arrives in theaters this week, and the critics have been less than kind.
“This is spirit-of-’84 blockbuster cosplay — a cinematic equivalent of dressing up as Venkman and trying to get every last detail of your costume and D.I.Y. proton pack right, parading your loyalty for the benefit of your peers,” reads a review by Rolling Stone‘s David Fear. “And yet Ghostbusters: Afterlife somehow leaves out the magic that made that Bill Murray-fueled, big-budget genre mash-up so wonderful in the first place.”

No foreign film in recent memory has attracted quite as much scrutiny as Netflix’s Cuties. Directed by French-Senegalese filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré, Cuties, which was a hit when it premiered at Sundance last year, tells the story of an 11-year-old girl, Amy, who strays from her strict conservative and religious Muslim upbringing to join a hip-hop dance troupe. At its essence, Cuties is a coming-of-age narrative and a commentary on social media’s role in sexualizing children, but that was not what the film’s poster — a luridly hued image of made-up prepubescent girls,...

Fox Searchlight unveiled Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” to sharply divided reactions at the Toronto International Film Festival. The coming-of-age comedy-drama is set in Nazi Germany and centers around a young boy whose sense of nationalism is rattled after he discovers his mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their home. Waititi himself stars in the movie as the boy’s imaginary friend, who just so happens to be a cartoonish version of Adolf Hitler. More than a few film critics have compared “Jojo Rabbit” to “Life Is Beautiful,” Roberto Benigni’s equally divisive 1997 Holocaust comedy-drama.
Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman called “Jojo Rabbit” this year’s “model of Nazi Oscar-bait showmanship: ‘Life Is Beautiful’ made with attitude,” adding the film “pretends to be audacious when it’s actually quite tidy and safe…it’s a studiously conventional movie dressed up in the self-congratulatory ‘daring’ of its look!-let’s-prank-the-Nazis cachet.

Update: It now appears that the film’s rating has been bumped up to 6%.
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s Holmes & Watson is currently being utterly barbecued by critics and audiences alike. Earlier in the day (at the time of writing), it was sitting at a kinda impressive 0% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. We say ‘kinda impressive’ because not many films have managed that.
I should add that this doesn’t appear to be one of those bizarre Venom style moments where pretty much every critic misunderstands the film while the audience love it, either. It currently has a 25% positive audience rating on the site, which indicates that the general public despises Holmes & Watson nearly as much as those high-falutin big city Ivy League film critics.
As usual in these cases, it seems that most of the entertainment value will come from reading the reviews. Rafer Guzman of...

The reviews are in for “The First Purge,” and the consensus is… mixed. With about 45 reviews in and counted by Rotten Tomatoes, “The First Purge” currently has an average score of 47 percent.
Directed by Gerard McMurray (“Burning Sands”)and starring Lex Scott Davis (“Superfly”), Y’Ian Noel (“Insecure”), Joivan Wade (“Doctor Who”) and Marisa Tomei, the film is a prequel to the hit Blumhouse franchise exploring creation of the “crime is legal for 12 hours a year” national holiday, and its first test group: The residents of Staten Island, New York.

“‘The Purge’ has never been subtle before, and it doesn’t start now: McMurray’s film argues that institutionalized violence only appeals to social classes who already have power. Strip away the propaganda, and The Purge is nothing more than thinly-disguised genocide,” wrote TheWrap’s own William Bibbiani.
