The 40th edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, one of the key stops on the road to the Oscars, will take place Feb. 4-15, 2025 — two days longer than past editions of the fest on the American Riviera, to allow for extra programming in celebration of the milestone — the fest announced on Thursday.
“As we embark on our 40th year, we are proud of what we’ve accomplished and exhilarated for what is ahead of us,” Sbiff executive director Roger Durling said in a statement. “We will be announcing a few surprises in the next few months.”
Given Santa Barbara’s close geographical proximity to Los Angeles and calendar proximity to the final round of Oscars voting (which in 2025 will run from Feb. 11-18), the fest annually draws some of the biggest names in the Oscar race.

The 39th Santa Barbara International Film Festival came to a close Sunday, but one of its highlights came three days earlier, with the last of the filmmaker tributes that serve as the spine of the fest.
On Thursday evening, inside Santa Barbara’s historic 2000-seat Arlington Theatre, veteran stage and screen actor Jeffrey Wright — who is Oscar-nominated for the first time in his nearly 30-year film career, for his leading performance in Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction, a dramedy about race in America — was feted with the fest’s Montecito Award following a deeply engaging career-retrospective conversation with Sbiff executive director and passionate Wright admirer Roger Durling.
Wright, 58, spoke about being raised by his mother and his aunt, and never really even considering acting until he got to Amherst College, where he began to fall in love with the craft (and to abandon the notion of attending law school). He...

Martin Scorsese and Justine Triet, two of this year’s best director Oscar nominees, received the Santa Barbara International Film Festival‘s outstanding directors of the year award on Monday night.
The tribute, sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter, featured 30-minute, sit-down conversations with each of the honorees about their careers and journeys to their currently celebrated films, moderated by THR‘s Scott Feinberg.
Anatomy of a Fall director Triet was up first. She touched on originally meeting the film’s star Sandra Hüller 12 years ago, watching The Boston Strangler “40 times before shooting” the best picture nominee as inspiration and her reluctance to reveal how the project truly ends: “I think I will speak in 10 years.”
Of the secret recording storyline that is featured in both Anatomy of a Fall and her 2019 film Sibyl, she also revealed, “When I was a young girl, I had a bad habit to record but now no.

It’s not news that the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is a key stop on the awards trail. Every year, Executive Director Roger Durling pulls a starry lineup and Oscar wranglers make sure their clients make the most of the 2,000-seat Arlington Theatre red carpet tributes and panels.
The new trend? Multiple presenters, and thus even bigger star power. Bradley Cooper had both costar Carey Mulligan and friend Brad Pitt pay him tribute last Thursday, while on Friday Robert Downey Jr. drew both his old school chum Rob Lowe and “Oppenheimer” costar Cillian Murphy.

It was a very big night for 12-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Thursday night.
That’s where the Maestro star received the Outstanding Performer Of The Year award from presenter Brad Pitt. But for two hours before that, he sat down with me for an in-depth look at his career with a wide variety of clips we chose to highlight his many talents, plus a killer sizzle reel to kick things off before I brought him up on stage to a massive standing ovation from the completely sold out crowd of 2,000 at the Arlington Theatre.
Cooper’s co-star in Maestro, Carey Mulligan, also appeared on stage to sing her co-star/director/writer/producer’s praises before we showed a scene from their film towards the end of the evening. It was a...

Set to open on Feb. 7, the Santa Barbara Intl. Film Festival enters its 39th year with high stakes. Organizers must re-create past successes while forging new paths to keep proceedings fresh, keeping their eye on a mission to education while celebrating the power of film.
This year’s edition of the coastal festival will open with the world premiere of Matt Ogens and Joel Kachi Benson’s “Madu,” a Disney documentary about a young Nigerian whose ballet performance went viral online. It concludes with the world premiere of “Chosen Family,” directed by and starring Heather Graham, who also plans to attend with the cast.
In between, Sbiff will host many noteworthy film screenings and events. There are more than 200 films in this year’s lineup and, per programming director Claudia Puig, 70% of them will celebrate their U.S. or world premieres at the festival. That amounts to more than 75 feature films and over 45 shorts,...

If you are nominated for an Oscar this year, you are probably making your travel plans to head to Santa Barbara. That is because the Santa Barbara Film Festival is taking place from February 7-17, and quite frankly if you aren’t there at some point between those dates you likely aren’t also going to the Academy Awards on March 10.
Bradley Cooper, Annette Bening, Mark Ruffalo, Paul Giamatti, Robert Downey Jr. and Jeffrey Wright are all receiving various festival awards and tribute evenings at this year’s Sbiff, while nominees Lily Gladstone, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo and America Ferrera will also be onstage receiving Virtuoso Awards. Under executive director Roger Durling, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff, February 7-17, 2024) has thrived by not only mounting a film festival but surfing the awards season wave, programming a ton of onstage interviews with Oscar contenders.
Every year, screenwriters, directors, and producers promote their films on panels, and the likes of Kristen Stewart, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Nolan, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Bong Joon Ho, Adam Driver, Renée Zellweger, Laura Dern, Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong’o, Saoirse Ronan, Bruce Dern, Jeff Bridges, Melissa McCarthy, Isabelle Huppert, Viggo Mortensen, Rami Malek, Glenn Close, and Sam Elliott submit to in-depth tributes.
The panels, tributes, and special screenings lure local cinephiles and the area’s few hundred Academy members eager to hear Oscar contenders talk about their creative process. All tributes and panels are held in person at the historic Arlington Theatre, and they’re posted online.

Exclusive: Annette Bening, who just received her fifth Oscar nomination last week for her portrayal of champion swimmer Diana Nyad in Nyad, has been named as the inaugural recipient of the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s Arlington Award.
The Arlington represents the first new award the festival has created in more than two decades and is named for the historic venue where all the fest’s annual tributes timed to Oscar season take place. It will be presented on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the theater, preceded by an in-person conversation I will be moderating covering her entire career.
“This is the first award added to our slate in 20 years. It is made to honor an artist who is greatly admired and who has demonstrated an incomparable commitment to film and its craft. Ms. Bening has not only displayed all of those qualities, but is considered by us to be a friend of the film festival.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Jeffrey Wright with the Montecito Award at a Feb. 15 event. At the event, Wright will discuss his career leading up to this year’s performance in “American Fiction,” for which he has received lead actor nominations for the Gotham, Spirit, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
“I’ve been a fan of Mr. Wright since I first saw him in 1993 in the original Broadway production of “Angels in America.” I’ve since admired that he brings a high level of class and integrity to every role he does. Yet, no film had capitalized on his extraordinary range and virtuosity until “American Fiction.” It is about time,” Sbiff’s Executive Director Roger Durling.

With his role as musical icon Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s Maestro racking up critical acclaim since the film’s premiere at Venice in September, Bradley Cooper adds another laurel with the Santa Barbara Film Festival naming him the honoree of its Outstanding Performer of the Year Award. It will be presented to the star at a tribute at the Arlington Theatre on February 8, 2024.
In addition to starring in the film opposite Carey Mulligan, Cooper also directed, co-wrote and was a producer of Maestro, his second time taking on director reins. A nine-time Oscar nominee, Grammy winner and Tony nominee, Cooper’s directorial debut A Star Is Born, which he also co-wrote, produced, starred and directed, garnered eight Oscar nominations. Anaïs Demoustier, the French actor known for her roles in films “Smoking Causes Coughing” and “Anaïs in Love,” has been announced as president of this year’s Caméra d’or Jury at Cannes. The Caméra d’Or award is given to the best debut feature film in the Official Selection and aims to inspire young filmmakers to continue in their creative endeavors.
“Among my greatest joys as a spectator is seeing the debut film of a director who goes on to become a major force. A gesture, the first one, one that forever anchors the necessity of a director and creates a desire to see him or her begin again,” said Demoustier.
“As an actress, I’ve been lucky to experience alongside young directors the delicate balance between nervous energy and a desire to see through their first creation. I am very honoured and looking forward to discovering debut films...

Official events including screenings, filmmaker Q&As, industry panels, and celebrity tributes will be held throughout the city, including at the historic Arlington Theatre. The full 2024 lineup will be revealed in January.
The 38th Sbiff held a few months ago celebrated awards contenders including eventual Oscar winners Jamie Lee Curtis, The Daniels, Brendan Fraser, Key Huy Quan and Cate Blanchett along with the likes of Angela Bassett, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Austin Butler, Kerry Condon, Stephanie Hsu, Jeremy Pope, Jermey Strong, Danielle Deadwyler and Nina Hoss.

Wrapping up an impressive list of honorees, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival aimed its tribute spotlight on the annual outstanding directors of the year program on Friday night at the Arlington Theater. A late-breaking cancellation by The Daniels, behind Everything Everywhere All at Once, pared down the onstage talent, but the leaner context placed more intensive focus on two directorial sensations from the 2022 film harvest, Todd Field (Tár) and Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin).
There was much to talk about over the course of the 90-minute session onstage. Both directors are in key pivot points in their careers, and both have been graced by triple-threat Oscar nods, for best picture, best director and best screenplay categories. On the Oscar stats front, the evening’s moderator, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, pointed out that each director had films leading actors to Oscar nominations — Field with six such assists and McDonagh with seven.

I don’t know about you, but I spent my Valentine’s Day evening onstage at the Arlington Theatre for the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s American Riviera Award tribute to Brendan Fraser. I have to say it was definitely a love affair between the sold-out audience in that huge venue and the Oscar-, SAG- and BAFTA-nominated and Critics Choice Award-winning star of The Whale.

Sbiff produces these elaborate two-hour tributes to various Oscar nominees each year, and this year’s crop has included Cate Blanchett, Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Colin Farrell & Brendan Gleeson together. I have been doing these for the past two decades and this one was so much fun to do, and you couldn’t find a more deserving or genuinely nice recipient.

“That representation that I longed for when I was a young actor coming up? To be able to offer that, to be given the opportunity to offer that, is a dream come true,” Angela Bassett said during a career-retrospective interview on Thursday prior to receiving the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Montecito Award in recognition of her body of work and her 2022 Oscar-nominated turn as Queen Ramonda in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. “It’s a full-circle moment.”

Nearly 20 years after her first Oscar nomination, Best Supporting Actress contender Angela Bassett revealed at the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival that shooting “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” was way more grueling on her than most people may have realized.
“We would do scenes over and over and over again,” said the actress on stage at the Arlington Theater on Thursday night, recalling the making of the 1993 Tina Turner biopic. “Those concert scenes, literally you feel like you have a sweater in your throat after performing, and we would do it [again] from top to bottom.”
Though she is now able to joke about it, Bassett did not mince words describing the challenges that came with being directed by English filmmaker Brian Gibson. “He’d say, ‘Ok, let’s do it again.’ I was like, ‘Can an actor have a moment? Just 60 seconds, a minute, please, just to catch our breath.

While she is currently nominated for an Oscar for playing mother to a different kind of dynasty, one of the roles that made Angela Bassett a screen icon was matriarch Katherine Jackson in the 1992 miniseries “The Jacksons: An American Dream,” a job she said she was advised not to take.
During an appearance at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 9 to accept the 38th annual Montecito Award, the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” actress sat down for a career-spanning conversation with the festival’s executive director Roger Durling and revealed that she was in the middle of auditioning for the ABC TV event about the musical family when her agents said, “You know what, there’s a lot of allegations about Michael [Jackson] in the press, and we don’t think you should do this project.”
The situation was a blow to Bassett, as someone who had been a lifelong fan of the Jacksons.

The Santa Barbara Intl. Film Festival celebrates movies and the people who make them.
One essential element of Sbiff is its focus on film education. With a carefully curated program, executive director Roger Durling says, “We’re educating your average filmgoer that comes to the festival.” Every event — from panels to tributes — is designed to teach, he says. This includes awards celebrating renowned stars including Angela Bassett, Brendan Fraser and Cate Blanchett.
“The format is a 90-minute conversation,” he says. “It’s not an awards evening where the person shows up and gets the award. Cate Blanchett will be on stage talking about her craft and career.”
Beyond staples such as films and panels, the program includes a variety of educational opportunities for cinephiles of all ages. For Durling, one of the most exciting parts of Sbiff is the Film Studies Program in which 30 undergraduate students from around the country...

It’s a great slate with 43 countries represented.”
The festival starts Feb. 8 with the world premiere of “Miranda’s Victim” from director-producer Michelle Danner. “Ms. Bassett has had an illustrious career as an actor, director and producer and in ‘Wakanda Forever’ reminds us why she’s so greatly revered. She’s regal, fierce and commanding as Queen Ramonda. We bow down,” said Sbiff’s Executive Director Roger Durling.
The 64-year-old actor has steadily received awards season buzz for her performance in the emotional “Black Panther” sequel, leaving many to predict that she has a strong chance at becoming the first performer in a Marvel Studios film to be nominated in an acting category — specifically best supporting actress — at the upcoming Academy Awards. Gearing up for phase two of the Oscar season even before we have even scratched the surfaces of phase one, the Santa Barbara Film Festival said Tuesday that The Whale star Brendan Fraser will be the recipient of its American Riviera Award on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2023.
Fraser has already become the nascent awards season’s “comeback kid” — first winning raves when the A24 film from director Darren Aronofsky had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival (including a viral post showing a tearful Fraser reacting to a long standing ovation), and then at the Toronto Film Festival where the film also received raves along with a prize at TIFF’s awards gala.
The movie will not be released until December, but the Oscar buzz is loud already, something Sbiff heard as well in putting together its annual series of awards and career tributes to stars and filmmakers likely...

Brendan Fraser will be honored at this year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival for his decades’ worth of contributions to American cinema. Going into the 38th annual festival, he is the 2023 recipient of its American Riviera Award.
Fraser will attend the event on Feb. 14, 2023, to discuss his lead role in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” which had its North American premiere at the Toronto film festival earlier this month and is garnering him early awards buzz. In Toronto, Fraser received the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance for his turn as a severely obese man trying to make amends with his estranged teenage daughter (played by Sadie Sink of “Stranger Things”). Aronofsky’s film is based on the acclaimed play by Samuel D. Hunter and will be released by A24 in December.
