Director/writer: Michael Morrissey.
Cast: James Russo, Tracy Middendorf, Caleb Steinmeyer and Zulay Henao.
Boy Wonder is an award winning film from first time director Michael Morrissey. The film deals with revenge and one monstrous Oedipus complex experienced by the protagonist, Sean. A revenge thriller at its heart, Boy Wonder is a violent film with a complex psychology. Flying by at a quick clip this film is over quickly and very evocative.
The protagonist is Sean a young high school student. He suffers from flashbacks after witnessing his mother's murder ten years previous. Now, he seeks her killer at the local New York police department where he scans pages of mugshots. Hounded by Det. Ames (Zulay Henao) to let her go, Sean (Caleb Steinmeyer) takes to the streets to find a justice outside of "due process." Meanwhile, his father may or may not have been complicit in Mary's (Tracy Middendorf) murder.

Mike Morrissey, director of the much talked about movie Boy Wonder, was at New York Comic Con. After screening his film, I was lucky enough to speak with the director about his film and what’s next in store for him.
Brad Reiter: When watching this film [Boy Wonder] the one thing that stands out is it’s grounded in reality. There have been a lot of made at home super hero movies recently that are more fantastical, like Kick-ass and even James Gunn’s Super to an extent. What made you want to ground the movie more in reality?
Mike Morrissey: I just kind of wanted to have that feeling like I want to believe this stuff. When I read Daredevil, I want to believe that it’s real. I feel like sometimes, even with something like Kick-ass, they were kind of making fun of us a little bit.

One of the more popular genres of film today is that of the comic book. It seem that every few months there is another movie based on a comic book coming out, and almost weekly there are 2 or 3 movies being announced. Of this genre, one of the more popular sub genres is the “made at home” super hero. Kick-Ass, Defendor, Griff the Invisible and James Gunn’s Super are recent entries into this sub genre. While these movies didn’t rake in the money at the box office, they have a cult following and are very popular among the fans. The newest entry into this sub genre is Boy Wonder. Of these movies, Boy Wonder might be the most interesting film of the bunch.

The MPAA just came back with ratings for several horror and thriller themed movies most notably Red State from Kevin Smith and The Howling Reborn. People who checked out the leaked trailer for The Howling Reborn compared it to The Twilight Saga. So was the werewolf action of this reboot watered down enough that it earned a PG-13 rating like the franchise that it evoked? Did Kevin Smith, who has had trouble with the MPAA in the past most famously for Clerks which originally earned an Nc-17 for language, run into trouble with the big bad old MPAA again? Here's the ratings the MPAA handed down on Boy Wonder, The Howling: Reborn, Red State and The Child's Eye.

Boy Wonder Another trailer from Boy Wonder, a riveting and gritty psychological thriller, has just been unleashed as the film starts making the festivel circuit and starts wowing crowds. Caleb Steinmeyer, who turns in a breakout performance that shows maturity beyond his years, is a quiet staight-a student by day and self-appointed hero by night who witnessed the brutal murder of his mother as a child and grows up obsessed with finding her killer.
But what is a real hero? And who decides what is right or wrong? As the boundaries blur, Sean’s dual life wears on his psyche and his two worlds careen dangerously close to colliding. Like a graphic novel you can’t put down, Boy Wonder challenges morality, distorting perceptions of what is right and what is justified, as it races to its shocking conclusion.

Superhero films are a dime a dozen this year. We have our popcorn fare with Thor, Captain America, X-men: First Class, the self-reflexive vigilante in Super, and the lady killers in Sucker Punch, just to name a few. When considering what makes or breaks a superhero, the formula is blurred at this point. Even though the genre is almost completely saturated with terrible, there are some untapped opportunities. Most notably, Christopher Nolan’s Batman series opened the door to innovative superhero storytelling, and what has followed suit in the past three years later only hints at the possibility of awesome.

As a kid who grew up reading comic books, I dreamt of one day being a superhero with the abnormal abilities to be faster than a speeding bullet and catch thieves just like flies. That's just what Sean Donovan sets out to do...only Sean doesn't have superpowers or a brightly colored disguise or even a mighty moniker. All he shares with caped crusaders and spandex-clad superheroes is the unfailing determination to see evil thwarted in his city. The driving factor at the core of every great masked avenger. Their origin story, if you will.

Revenge films are a dime a dozen. Some are good, some are great but few have the raw energy of Michael Morrissey’s fantastic directorial debut Boy Wonder. Part of the appeal of Morrissey’s film is the story itself which pits a 19 year old as a vigilante who has been working on honing his hunting skills from an early age. The other is the performance from relative new comer Caleb Steinmeyer as Sean, the young man at the centre of Morrissey’s tale.
At the tender age of 9, Sean saw his mother brutally killed in a car jacking gone wrong and every day since, he has spent hours at the police station, looking through mug shots in search of the man who killed her. Over the years, Sean has manicured the perfect exterior: a quiet teen,...

Comic book and genre-film fans everywhere are likely to be confused by the title of writer-director Michael Morrissey's latest film, Boy Wonder — especially with a plot that sounds vaguely like the origin of Batman's protégé: A young man becomes a vigilante to seek revenge on the man responsible for murdering his mother.
Plot similarities aside, Boy Wonder is more a gritty detective story than a flick for the spandex set. Morriessey's movie follows a homicide detective's investigation into killings in Brooklyn and his eventual involvement in the vigilante's quest for revenge.
The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed key cast members, including Caleb Steinmeyer as the vigilante, Zulay Henao as the detective, James Russo as a hitman, and Bill Sage and Tracy Middendorf as the young man's parents. Boy Wonder is being produced by Under Construction for Diy Network. Shooting begins June 15.
