The most awaited film this year at the Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, had its world premiere Thursday night, with the dystopian epic decades in the making landing a seven-minute standing ovation.
Coppola, the 85-year-old director and five-time Oscar winners, bowed as the lights came up inside the Grand Theatre Lumiere. He was congratulated by his Cotton Club star Richard Gere and got a hug from Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux as the ovation carried on.
Said Coppola to the crowd finally: “Thank you all so much — it is impossible to find words how I feel.” He then introduced those around him — including his granddaughter and son and collaborator Roman Coppola and sister Talia Shire. He called his cast “family” and emphasized the movie’s end message: “We should pledge allegiance to our families…that children should inherit a beautiful world from us.”

Some 45 years ago, the Cannes Film Festival invited Francis Ford Coppola to bring his latest project to the French Riviera for a special “work-in-progress” screening. The movie’s production had already achieved a mythic status as an example of Murphy’s Law made manifest, from last-minute actor replacements to monsoons to storylines being added, subtracted and rewritten on the fly. Coppola had sunk a lot of his own money into the project, since the studios had been reluctant to finance what seemed like a huge folly. The director had staked...

As Deadline first told you, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis was always destined for an Imax release. Heck, the first screening was shown at Universal CityWalk Imax theater. So, there’s no news in the fact that the $120 million dystopian future epic is getting a global Imax release. But here’s some: we hear that Coppola himself secured a commitment that Megalopolis will play IMAX in at least 20 U.S. cities in late September. IMAX screens have been a major part of his vision for his self-funded film, so this was in place even before he unveiled the film for the first time at a buyer’s screening, after which a cynical press dug in that he had not yet secured a distributor in the U.S. Coppola, his lawyer Barry Hirsch, and Goodfellas have since made deals in numerous offshore territories.

Adam Driver has played a city-dwelling seducer before — think: “Girls” at the very least — but this time, the actor has transformed into a slick harbinger of chaos for Francis Ford Coppola’s epic “Megalopolis.”
Driver stars as artist and city planner Cesar Catilina, once again adjacent to faux Italian-ness for the screen. Cesar’s biggest opponent is Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare per the official synopsis. Yet when Cesar begins an affair with Franklyn’s socialite daughter Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), Cesar’s determined path to forge a new city begins to falter.
Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman also star.
Coppola writes, directs, and produces the epic feature which had an estimated budget of $120 million-plus.

Are we headed for a bon marché?
A new class of finished films and packages (unmade movies with big stars and a director attached) will travel to Cannes this week in search of cash and homes with the studios, streamers and global indie players.
The 2024 Cannes market comes equipped with some interesting contradictions. Stateside, the content buying machine is fraught. Major media stock prices are getting hammered day by day, and a new age of austerity has gripped the once free-spending tech giants. At the same time, distributors paralyzed by the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes need content to fill their slates for the end the year and the top of 2025.
“We’d agree that finished film volume isn’t as high due to the strikes, but Cannes is a much better setting for packages to begin with,” one top sales agent told Variety. “These movies can get financed out of the international marketplace,...

“Our new film ‘Megalopolis’ is the best work I’ve ever had the privilege to preside over,” reads a quote attributed to iconic director Francis Ford Coppola attached to the official trailer for his new epic film.
The picture, which will premiere in competition on Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival, has been a project many years in the making for the director. He first began work on the screenplay in the 1980s.
The legendary filmmaker behind “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now” has invested $120 million of his own money into the film.
The trailer starts with a voice-over musing about the decline of empires – “when does an empire die? Does it collapse in one terrible moment? No, no. But there comes a time when people no longer believe in it” — before cutting to a Roman chariot race, a metropolitan skyscape and scenes of protest.

Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded feature Megalopolis has revealed a first look image after landing a Cannes competition berth.
The project follows the rebuilding of a metropolis after it has fallen into decline, with two competing visions — one from the idealist architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), the other from corrupt Mayor Frank Cicero, played by Giancarlo Esposito — colliding.
The first official image from Megalopolis reveals Driver eyeing a rebuilding of the City of New Rome, while Nathalie Emmanuel, as Julia Cicero, the socialite daughter of Mayor Cicero, looks on. Megalopolis is structured as a Roman epic fable set in an imagined modern America.
To rebuild New Rome, Julia Cicero ultimately comes between a Cesar Catilina she falls in love with and Frank Cicero whom she remains loyal to as her father, as the two men battle with competing visions.

“Megalopolis” is finally here.
Francis Ford Coppola’s $120 million self-funded “Roman epic” debuted its first look featuring “Megalopolis” stars Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel who play a couple caught up in the revolutionary destruction of a utopian society.
Driver plays an idealistic architect and artist who is planning to rebuild a city that has fallen in part due to a corrupt mayor (Giancarlo Esposito). “Game of Thrones” alum Emmanuel stars as the mayor’s socialite daughter. The ensemble cast includes Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, D.B. Sweeney, Jason Schwartzman, Baily Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, and James Remar.
“Megalopolis” is debuting in competition at Cannes. Coppola told Vanity Fair that the long-gestating project was rewritten more than “300 times” across decades.

In the run-up to its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola’s 135-minute epic “Megalopolis” is on track to sell to a French distributor, Le Pacte.
The indie company, presided over by veteran French distributor Jean Labadie, is currently negotiating a deal. It seems like an odd match for such a pricey movie considering Le Pacte’s fairly modest size. Although the company has had recent hits, including Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Maiwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” it may not be able to splurge on P&a. Coppola’s lawyer Barry Hirsch, who also served as a producer, has been courting studios and streamers to secure a splashy deal with a P&a commitment amounting to more than half of the film’s $120 million budget, according to industry insiders. Following the press conference unveiling the Cannes lineup, festival director Thierry Fremaux addressed a few hot topics, including Francis Ford Coppola’s 135-minute epic “Megalopolis,” which doesn’t yet have a distribution deal.
While “Megalopolis,” Coppola’s self-produced $120 million opus starring Adam Driver, has been selected to compete at the Cannes Film Festival, it doesn’t have a distribution deal in France. In theory, that’s not an issue as there are “quite a lot of films in the official section without any distribution,” as Fremaux tells Variety. But in the case of “Megalopolis,” it may be a ticking bomb.
If “Megalopolis” does get sold to a streamer with no theatrical plans for France, it will spark uproar on the Croisette and within local exhibitors. Most importantly, it will clash with Cannes’ infamous rule which requires every film in competition to have French theatrical distribution. That strict guideline was first...

‘Megalopolis’: After Wild Speculation, What Exactly Is So ‘Bats—’ About Francis Ford Coppola’s Opus?
Warning: Minor spoilers ahead for “Megalopolis”
Francis Ford Coppola has made quite the return to directing. Industry chatter about his new film “Megalopolis,” a passion project more than 20 years in the making, has been churning since a late March screening for prospective buyers.
This week, reports said Coppola was struggling to find a splashy distribution deal for his 135-minute epic, about a dystopia in the throes of an energy revolution. As a response — call it cosmic or intentional — Coppola rebounded by booking a spot in competition at the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival, where the movie is looking to reset the narrative. It’s not dissimilar to the skepticism that greeted another Coppola passion project, “Apocalypse Now,” which was derided by many as a vanity project before it screened at Cannes as a work in progress, going on to capture the Palme d’Or.

Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited “Megalopolis” will have its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, IndieWire has confirmed.
While the full festival lineup will be announced April 10, Deadline first reported that the epic has received the gala premiere slot at Cannes for a May 17 debut and that it will play in competition.
However, “Megalopolis” still has not secured distribution, IndieWire understands. Coppola’s attorney Barry Hirsch is working on selling the film, and he previously told IndieWire the film was unlikely to debut at a festival until it landed distribution.
The feature will be Coppola’s return to Cannes following his respective Palme d’Or wins for “The Conversation” and “Apocalypse Now.” His other Cannes film was “Tetro,” which screened in Directors Fortnight.

After the March 28 friends, family, and industry screening for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” at Universal’s CityWalk AMC in IMAX, reactions were wild. Some said it was his most ambitious film since “Apocalypse Now;” another described it to Puck as “batshit crazy.” Made for $120 million and bankrolled entirely by Coppola through the sale of one of his vineyards, it incorporates new VFX techniques — ones, the filmmakers hope, will be seen on the biggest screens possible.
For that to happen, it will need a major theatrical deal and the filmmakers are now in talks with distributors and major studios. However, those entities have been particularly risk averse these days — and while Coppola is a legend, he hasn’t made a commercial success in three decades.
The film’s stars include Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and Giancarlo Esposito; maybe, say, Paramount or Universal want to be back in the Coppola business.

A Los Angeles judge has tentatively awarded no damages in the heated litigation between the firms led by well-known talent dealmakers Barry Hirsch and Jim Jackoway, finding that absent a written agreement, it is "unconscionable" to require a client to pay a 5% commission to a firm once the representation has ended.
Judge Robert O'Brien made the conclusion in a detailed 27-page tentative ruling issued Wednesday. The decision follows a six-week bench trial before O'Brien in a case stemming from allegations that Jackoway and other lawyers conspired to force their partner Hirsch into retirement and that Hirsch then "stole" firm clients and files while defecting in the middle of the night.
Through a spokeswoman, Hirsch and his co-plaintiffs at Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof & Fishman declined to comment on the tentative decision.
In a statement, Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum & Morris said, "We are pleased the court has finally disposed of all the claims made by Hirsch and his associates. Although Hirsch and his associates once maintained that they were entitled to many millions of dollars, the court yesterday decided that they were entitled to nothing."
Jackoway Tyerman added that it was disappointed it could not recover damages for legal fees stemming from deals for Hirsch clients that "we negotiated while he was at our firm."
Hirsch and partners Robert Wallerstein, Howard Fishman, David Matlof and George Hayum left Hirsch Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum & Morris on Aug. 13, 2004, bringing 200 clients -- nearly all of whom had never signed written fee agreements with Hirsch or the firm. Hirsch had practiced with the firm for nearly 25 years.
That same day, Hirsch and his partners filed court papers asking a judge to dissolve the former firm. In a later amended complaint, they claimed breach of fiduciary duty based on the actions of partners Jackoway, Alan Wertheimer, Barry Tyerman and Geoffry Oblath.
The departure came at a time when Hirsch Jackoway was planning to move from a shareholder-based firm structure to a limited law partnership, which would have placed Jackoway in charge.
