An edgy, innovative adaptation in which the visual effects upstage the foreground action
This adaptation of Shakespeare’s play was shot on a green-screen soundstage, enabling visual-effects teams to slot the performers into an intricately detailed, impossibly constructed space. It’s as if the whole shebang is unfolding in a cross between a gigantic astrolabe and a renovated gasometer, with pencilled-in architectural flourishes. Like director Kit Monkman’s previous feature (co-directed with Marcus Romer) The Knife That Killed Me, the end result creates an edgy, visually innovative background which is lush to watch but constantly upstages the foreground action, especially since, to put it politely, not everyone in the cast has the chops to handle the material.
One noble exception is experienced stage performer Akiya Henry as a fierce and formidable Lady Macbeth. Sadly, Mark Rowley in the lead role is less nuanced and commanding, although some viewers may find the shot of him shirtless,...

For one night only, on Tuesday the 13th of March, Event Cinema will be hosting a unique reimagining of Macbeth. For a taster of what to expect you can watch the trailer below.
Shot entirely on green screen, and starring The Last Kingdom and Luther’s Mark Rowley, director Kit Monkman (The Knife That Killed Me) adaptation bridges the gap between theatre and film to create a wholly new type of imaginative space. This radical new adaptation puts the audience’s engagement with the story centre-stage, amplifying the theatrical context of the original and creating innovative and cinematic vistas, whilst maintaining the language and themes of Shakespeare’s original play.

Jack McMullen will take the lead role of Paul Varderman in The Knife That Killed Me, a gripping and tragically topical story of one boy’s spiral into knife-crime.
20 year old Jack (represented by David Daly Associates) from Merseyside, plays Finn Sharkey in Waterloo Road and also starred in the indie feature Seamonsters, premiering at film festivals this year. He was also on our screens at Christmas in the ITV drama Fast Freddie. He started acting as a child with regular roles in Brookside and Grange Hill.
The casting call for the lead role was posted on Screenterrier back in October 2011, as well an additional call for Yorkshire-based actors in January.
The script has been adapted from Anthony McGowan’s award winning novel by Kit Monkman and Marcus Romer, who will also direct, and is being produced by Thomas Mattinson and Alan Latham.
