In a bid to bypass traditional distribution channels and open up new ones, Madrid-based 59 En Conserva has launched a newly expanded Les Films de la Résistance, its international sales agency for non-fiction and hybrid Spanish films.
Among the first titles in its roster is the critically acclaimed feature debut of 59 En Conserva co-founder Irene M. Borrego, “The Visit and a Secret Garden” (“La visita y un jardín secreto”).
Aiming to fill a vital gap in the distribution of non-fiction titles, Les Films de la Résistance aims to “operate more like art gallery owners, discovering, promoting, and selling the works of its talented creators,” the company said.

A film of two parts, the first for a full half hour captures the once celebrated Spanish painter Isabel Santaló in decrepit old age living in absolute anonymity in a cramped apartment somewhere on Madrid’s nondescript outer-radius.
Directed by Irene M. Borrego, the artist’s niece, and a London Film School alum and prized short film director, the film captures Santaló some 50 years after she dropped off the radar of Madrid’s art scene, having trained at Madrid’s School of Fine Arts, Paris’ Louvres and New York’s MoMa, taken part in exhibitions in Paris, Milan, Stockholm and Miami and figured as one of Spains foremost women painted and art restorers over the 1950s-70s.

It’s a fully in-person edition for the 2nd Arca International Festival of Films on Arts in Uruguay as it shakes off the pandemic blues that saw some guest cancellations last year.
“Despite the peak Covid situation last January, we had approximately 5,000 attendees,” says fest director Mercedes Sader, who pointed out that the event’s outdoor screenings were ideal for the times.
Running Jan. 2-7 this year, Arca kicked off in 2022 to coincide with the inauguration of the coastal resort town’s first contemporary art museum, the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Atchugarry (MacA). The 75,000 sq. ft. museum designed by architect Carlos Ott commands vistas of a 99-acre sculpture park and sweeping grounds that include an outdoor amphitheater, a smaller outdoor theatre for video art screenings, forests and a helipad. The museum houses Cine MacA, an indoor theatre with a 100-seat capacity.

“Caravaggio’s Shadow,” “Charlotte” and “Goya, Carrière and the Ghost of Buñuel” feature in the 15-film lineup of 2023’s second edition of Arca Intl. Festival of Films on Arts, 2023, which opens Jan. 2 with the world premiere of “The Children of the Mountain,” a doc-feature portrait of Uruguayan sculptor Pablo Atchugarry from Mercedes Sader, director of Arca.

Festival director Miguel Ribeiro described a busy and joyful festival.
The 20th edition of Doclisboa closed this weekend on an upbeat note with festival director Miguel Ribeiro reporting audiences were back to pre-pandemic levels.
“We are closing the festival with a great sense of having been a big celebration of cinema, a great get-together,” said Ribeiro. ”There was a feeling of joy in the corridors of the venues and during the informal encounters, the parties at the end of each day.”
Nikita Lavretski’s A Date In Minsk won the festival’s main prize, the City of Lisbon Award for best international competition film.

The Emerging Producers section at the Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Film Festival has a growing reputation for its ability to spot the producing talent of the future.
Producers to have passed through its ranks include Bianca Oana, the Romanian producer of 2018 Berlinale Golden Bear winner “Touch Me Not,” as well as its Czech co-producer Radovan Sibrt.
Danish producer Katja Adomeit, the co-producer of 2017 Cannes Palme d’Or winner “The Square,” is another of the 129 alumni to have passed through Ji.hlava’s Emerging Producers program.
Now in its eighth edition, the project selects 18 talented producers each year, providing them with educational, networking and promotional support during the festival. The producers also meet up again for four days during the Berlinale, and are promoted at other film events during the year.
A key part of the program is a public presentation by the producers, introducing themselves and their work to the Ji.
