Beach Boys co-founder and virtuoso songwriter-producer Brian Wilson was placed under a conservatorship this week, following a petition from his family after his wife, Melinda Ledbetter, died in January.
Wilson, 81, who was diagnosed with a “major neurocognitive disorder,” was placed under the conservatorship at a Tuesday hearing overseen by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May. The hearing was the culmination of a series of proceedings initiated by Wilson’s family and friends after Ledbetter, who famously extracted Wilson’s affairs from his former psychologist via a court-ordered separation and then became his manager, died at their Beverly Hills home on Jan. 30.
“I find from clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary,” May said at Thursday’s hearing, according to the minutes viewed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Updated with latest: At a hearing today, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May placed Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson in a conservatorship. The arrangement is to be overseen by the 81-year-old musician’s longtime publicist Jean Sievers and manager LeeAnn Hard.
“I find from clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary,” said May at the hearing.
Wilson has reportedly consented to the conservatorship.
A doctor’s statement in the filing said that Wilson suffers from a “major neurocognitive disorder,” is taking medication for dementia and “is unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”
His wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, died in January.

The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson has been placed under a court-ordered conservatorship after it was recently revealed that he is suffering from dementia.
As Rolling Stone reports, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Gus T. May has put Wilson’s longtime publicist and manager, Jean Sievers, and longtime business manager, LeeAnn Hard, in charge of the conservatorship. It applies to Wilson’s personal and medical affairs, and requires that his children be consulted on all major healthcare decisions.
As requested by Wilson’s eldest offspring, Carnie Wilson Bonfiglio and Wendy Wilson Knutson, “all of Brian’s children who wish to be added will be added to the text chain from his nurses providing updates about Brian.” Sievers and Hard will also be required to run “all material healthcare decisions” by Wilson’s children.

Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson was placed in a court-ordered conservatorship Thursday that will be run by his longtime publicist and manager, Jean Sievers, and his longtime business manager, LeeAnn Hard. The reps revealed in a petition filed last February that Wilson is suffering from dementia at the age of 81.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Gus T. May granted the petition after finding that Wilson is living with a “major neurocognitive disorder” and needs the assistance as the least restrictive way to address his needs. The judge also added...

Exclusive: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road, the new documentary on the legendary musical genius that had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June, has been acquired for distribution by Screen Media for release in theaters and video on demand in November.
The company also plans an Oscar campaign for the film including hopes to land a nomination for the original song “Right Where I Belong,” written by Wilson and Jim James and recorded specifically for the movie.
I wrote about the docu pre-Tribeca in an exclusive interview with Wilson, director Brent Wilson (no relation) and executive producer and film participant Jason Fine, who as a veteran Rolling Stone editor has interviewed Wilson numerous times and, for the purposes of this film, took the star on a long drive (where Wilson selected the music they played along the way) to many of the locations that shaped his life and career.

Former Beach Boy Brian Wilson is ready for his close-up. The reclusive musician announced that he has inked a deal with producer Mark Gordon (The Day After Tomorrow) and documentary filmmaker David Leaf (The U.S. vs. John Lennon) to develop a warts-and-all feature film based on his life. Wilson plans to include stories detailing his troubled relationship with his father to his popular "Surfin' Safari" days as well as the fallout from his widely-publicized nervous breakdown in the film. He told Variety, "I love the idea of there being a movie on my life, and I can't wait to see the script." Wilson's managers Ronnie Lippin and Jean Sievers and Gordon Co.'s Lawrence Inglee and Jordan Wynn are also on board to produce the project.
