We live in a media world that has been oversaturated with vampires; particularly in recent years, as the young adult fiction market seems to have blossomed into an excuse for girls to be whisked away by creatures of the night. It’s ruined the entire concept of vampirism, really; with very few exceptions in cinema or literature.
Thank the gods we have comics to remind us that even when it comes to a monster as overused as the vampire, there are still stories to be told, if done well. I give you three examples from this week’s hefty load of quality material.
I, Vampire #19
Story: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Art: Fernando Blanco & Andrea Sorrentino
Why It Works: Narrative intelligence. The problem with a lot of vampire stories is that they focus entirely on the state of vampirism without venturing outside of it to bring in antagonists or storylines that might feature well otherwise.

While nothing further has been revealed about the in-development "Justice League" film, Guillermo Del Toro's "Justice League Dark" adaptation is coming together more and more each day. Earlier this week, while promoting "Pacific Rim" at WonderCon, Del Toro had this to say on the project: "The route we’re going is Constantine is our lead. Constantine is the guy who leads us in and out of the plot. We have Swamp Thing, Etrigan, we have Zatanna, we have the Floronic Man. We have stuff that those who love the darker side of the DC Universe are going to appreciate, and we’re trying to be true to the origins of the characters."
So the confirmed lineup for "Justice League Dark" (or "Dark Universe") thus far is Constantine, Deadman, Swamp Thing, the Spectre, Etrigan, Zatana, and, apparently, the Floronic Man. However, as DC fans know, there are...

New comic book Wednesday has come and gone. The dust at your local comic shop has settled. An eerie silence descends as you finish reading your last superhero book of the week. Now it's time for something a little more sinister. Welcome to Bagged and Boarded: comic reviews of the sick, spooky, twisted and terrifying!
I, Vampire No. 0
Backstory, backstory, oh glorious backstory! Though often alluded to, we never really got the whole story behind the vampirism of our faithful protagonist Lord Andrew Bennett. The powerful vampire who has trained himself to thirst for blood other than human blood (thank you kindly, Mr. Bennett) sees the full origin treatment in this zero issue from DC. We see the poor sap pre-lord of the night, as he fends off Cain (yes, that Cain) the original vampire.
Bag it or board it up?
This is a dream issue for fans of the series.

Thank you, Jeff Lemire. For a few months, it seemed like Justice League Dark was starting to fail miserably. What started as one of the strongest books of the New 52 peaked early and immediately dropped. However, with Lemire entering as some fresh blood, the book got a renewed life, and what a life it is. Lemire has made the series fun and exotic, and made everything seem as dark and as dangerous as it did when the series debuted. Faust has one over on the team, and now they find themselves in a truly terrible position. What they don’t know is that Faust has a boss.
I cannot be happier with Lemire on this book. He, Snyder and Azzarello are probably the three biggest stars of the new universe, and those three names encompass the writers of all but two of the books that most...

Jeff Lemire—writer, artist, and enthusiasic nerd in the best possible way—has managed to find a special current of vulnerability in storytelling by juxtaposing horrifying circumstances with intense family drama. Animal Man, hailed over and over as one of the best ongoing DC titles, is the most perfect example: The Rot plays visually and conceptually disturbing cards against Buddy Baker and his wife and children, but the surreal conglomerates of animal organs that march against him would not be nearly as visceral if Lemire ignored the personal stakes. I could say the same for his creator-owned works such as Essex County and the newly published Underwater Welder: magic happens when displaced people must protect their normal lives from strange situations. Despite his recent successes, Lemire proved to be earnest and willing to discuss properties he has quite possibly talked to death, if only for the benefit of FM monster-lovers...

After making quite a name for himself in creator-owned comics, such as the creepily claustrophic Elk’S Run and the descent-into-madness tale Echoes, Josh Fialkov is now making room for horror in DC’s New 52 and flirting with science fiction in Idw’s Doctor Who series. We got to talking about vampires and their role in the new Dcu, as well as people’s changing perceptions of vampires in general (which of course you can read more about in Famous Monsters Of Filmland 261). And as Fialkov indicates, you can certainly read more and more of his darkly-leaning stories on the comic racks these days…

Joshua Hale Fialkov's I… Vampire (with art by Andrea Sorrentino) debuted several months ago from DC Comics as part of the company's "New 52". A reboot/continuation of the 1980s comic about a sixteenth century lord named Andrew Bennett out to stop his lover/enemy Mary Seward (a.k.a. Mary, Queen of Blood) from wiping out humanity, the book's fourth issue is due out this Wednesday, December 28th (check out our exclusive five-page preview here). In the interview that follows the jump, Fialkov talks about writing vampires in a world filled with superheroes, as well as his other new comic projects, and why he considers comics one of the greatest mediums in which to tell stories. In the latest of our comprehensive series of reviews of DC Comics' 52 relaunched titles, we take a look at I, Vampire #1. Who's it by?
I, Vampire #1 is written by Joshua Hale Fialkov (Echoes) and drawn by Andrea Sorrentino (God of War). What's the history?
The star of I, Vampire is Lord Andrew Bennett, a man from the 16th century who was transformed into one of the undead but swore to himself never to relinquish his humanity. He was introduced in issue #290 of DC's horror comic House of Mystery in 1981, invented by Jm DeMatteis and Tom Sutton. His primary antagonist was Mary, Queen of Blood, who had been his mortal lover but was corrupted when he transformed her into a vampire. The 'I... Vampire' storyline ran for two years in House of Mystery before its conclusion, and Bennett (more)...

Just a quick little column this week, guys, just a collection of my thoughts. Some about comics, some not. Call it a walk into Mindy’s brain. And don’t forget to duck.
• Spent three hours today at the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles renewing my license. Last time I renewed it, I was in and out in 20 minutes. Why did it take so long? Two words: Walking Beachball. (Actually I was going to say Fat Fuck, but I didn’t want to offend anybody.) That’s right, I’m talking about New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie. For a while at the Dmv I occupied myself looking at the latest Ikea catalogue. Then I started talking to some of the nice people who work there. (Now that’s a job in hell! Compared to working at the Dmv, Buffy’s stint at the Doublemeat Palace was being the Queen of England.

On the 40th anniversary of the character's creation, the New York Times bestselling writer of American Vampire, Scott Snyder, teams up with Yannick Paquette (Batman, Incorporated) to bring horror back to the DC Universe in Swamp Thing #1. Perry Farrell and his wife, Etty, reached out to MTV to share what they have in mind to film a music video, supporting "Go All The Way (Into The Twilight)", one of the "Twilight" theme songs. The video will feature club-goers celebrating their mutual attraction with pomegranates and other forbidden fruits, as reported by MTV News.
"This [movie] is about a young man and a young woman. [Edward] wants to go all the way in his heart, but his head is saying no. [Bella] wants to go all the way in her heart and in her head," Farrell explained the theme brought out by the video which will be directed by Andrew Bennett. "It's the idea of going all the way."
