It’s Raymond Clark (Owen McDonnell), the heartbroken killer of “True Detective: Night Country,” who gets the famous line from the series (and its beloved first season): “Time is a flat circle.”
He’s talking about a lot of things — most explicitly, the spirit of Annie K. (Nivi Pederson) that he believes lives in the ice caves around them — but he’s also talking about “True Detective” and the very nature of episodic storytelling itself. Stories are told and retold and repackaged and remixed, genres interwoven, resolutions reached.
And “True Detective: Night Country” did a damn good job with all of that.
Following now-deleted comments from series creator Nic Pizzolatto on social media, audiences learned early on that not only did Pizzolatto not actually have a hand in the creation of the fourth season of the HBO series, but he didn’t...

We’ve arrived at the final episode of HBO’s True Detective: Night Country and we’re finally getting answers as to what’s really going on in the town of Ennis, Alaska. More importantly, episode six revealed exactly what happened to the researchers, the whereabouts of Raymond Clark, and who was responsible for Annie Kowtok’s death.
Episode six begins on December 31st, the 14th day of night, with Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) making their way through the ice caves. When Liz hears whispers, Navarro asks, “You feel it too, don’t you?” Navarro thinks she sees something – a body, perhaps – and leads Liz toward it, insisting “it’s here.” Unfortunately, they’re met with blocks of ice.

Sunday marks the final episode of “True Detective: Night Country,” Issa Lopez’s triumphant revival of the HBO series originally created by Nic Pizzolatto. A six-year old murder, five-body “corpsicle,” and chilling hints of the supernatural intertwine throughout the season, all of it made exponentially more chilling and suspenseful by the long night looming over Ennis, Alaska.
So, as Police Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) would say: Ask the question (cue Kali Reis’ Navarro rolling her eyes). Who’s the killer? Too simple. What’s the motive? Now we’re cooking. What were the men of Tsalal hiding? There’s something there…
With such a rich, engrossing, and open-ended mystery, the final hour has to wrap everything up neatly — but could also choose to languish in a few loose ends, like so many stories do. Either way, we’re asking the right questions going into Episode 6, the ones that could...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains light spoilers for “True Detective” Season 4.]
The “corpsicle,” as it’s been dubbed since “Night Country” author Issa López first wrote the scene, is a shocking sight to behold. Twisted naked bodies, frozen in ice, have been carved from their original resting place and plopped at the center of a hockey rink to thaw. How did they die? Why are they naked? Who — or what — did this to them? As the ice melts, secrets spill out and the dead’s last moments gain gruesome clarity. Frostbite blackens their extremities. Teeth marks cover their skin. One is bleeding from the ears. Another is missing the fingers he’d used to claw out his own eyes.
Despite its vividly unique rendering, the corpsicle is still strangely familiar. Here are these dead naked men, ornately displayed by natural elements, unable to shield themselves from the discerning eyes of the detectives investigating their demise. You can’t help but stare,...

We’re getting down to the wire with just two episodes left of HBO’s hit series True Detective: Night Country, and season four has been such a mystery. However, with episode five – the penultimate episode – we’re finally starting to get some answers.
The action in episode five begins on December 31st – the 14th day of night.
The episode opens with a sobering moment as skeletal remains are being cremated. The bones are those of State Trooper Evangeline Navarro’s sister, Julia, who committed suicide in episode four. As her ashes are being prepared, Navarro (Kali Reis) is there silently watching.
Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) interviews Otis Heiss, who she mistakenly believed was Raymond Clark at the end of episode four. She asks if he knew Clark before their recent encounter and Otis says he didn’t,...

Sometimes rage is the only way for a woman to get what she wants — especially if she’s a teenage girl with nothing else on her side. And no one channels that rage into movies better than screenwriter Diablo Cody.
The latest Cody film has all the signature requirements behind the Oscar-winning screenwriter’s scripts: Billed by Focus Features as “a coming of Rage love story,” the teen-centric, not quite rom-com hinges on the sexual awakening and empowerment of a high school senior (Kathryn Newton) who seeks solace from a centuries-old corpse (Cole Sprouse) after grieving death and coping with an assault.
“Lisa Frankenstein” is just the most recent female-fronted original horror-dark comedy from Cody, who penned the iconic “Jennifer’s Body” and recently told Deadline that “Lisa Frankenstein” exists in the same universe as the Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried two-hander.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Jenn Adams weighs in on the dreamiest and scariest boyfriends the genre has to offer.
We’ve all dated our fair share of bad boys. They win us over with their dreamy aloofness, then just when we’ve let our guard down, they turn out to be monsters in disguise. Horror has a long history of these roguish young lovers, some so bad they commit cold-blooded murder. But they’re not all monsters.
Every once in a while, a cinematic boyfriend manages to be attractive, kind, and non-murderous, all while supporting his girlfriend as she runs away from the film’s true villain. No icebreakers are needed when it comes to kicking off conversation with Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and first-time feature filmmaker Zelda Williams, who arrived for a mid-week, Midtown-located breakfast with IndieWire with nothing but smiles. Their first collaboration, ’80s-set horror comedy “Lisa Frankenstein,” blends together their seemingly mutual obsessions, and is ripe for fun conversation.
Still, this writer had to ask something kind of silly to get it going: like, oh, have they heard from the Lisa Frank people? Cody laughed. No, they haven’t called!
“Here’s the thing, the fact that the movie’s called ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ is actually kind of a coincidence, because I knew it was going to be an ’80s classic Gen X girl name plus Frankenstein for the title,” the writer said. She cycled through some names, like Stacy and Heather, before landing on Lisa, like the built-from-scratch leading lady in “Weird Science,” a film that “super-duper inspired” her.

“Weird Science” for lonely goth chicks who spend all of their free time reading sad poetry in the graveyard behind their evil step-mother’s house, the admirably deranged if frustratingly undead “Lisa Frankenstein” might be one of the more irreverent riffs on Mary Shelley’s immortal horror novel, but there’s also something full circle about bringing that story back around to the kind of teenage girl who wrote it in the first place.
In other words, Zelda Williams’ directorial debut — a bloody rom-com about a grieving outcast who accidentally wishes her favorite Victorian era corpse back to “life,” and then starts killing people in order to replace her Bff’s rotted parts — isn’t just a cute pun in search of an ’80s throwback to go along with it.

A totally killer paranormal love story inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel is headed to the screen with Lisa Frankenstein, written by Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) and directed by Zelda Williams. Lisa Frankenstein comes to theaters on February 9, 2024.
The ’80s set comedy is “a coming of Rage love story about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.”
Kathryn Newton (Freaky, Abigail) and Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”) star as high school outcast Lisa Swallows and Creature, two complicated characters that couldn’t be further apart in personality but are drawn together by bizarre, supernatural circumstances. Whereas Lisa can’t stop talking, centuries of being dead have left Creature a lumbering,...

Things get weird at the edge of the world. That’s true of the murder cases Detective Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) and Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) are attempting to solve up in Ennis, Alaska, and it’s true of the challenges cinematographer Florian Hoffmeister had to face shooting “True Detective: Night Country.” As conceived by showrunner Issa López, the fourth season doesn’t tangle just the limbs of the researchers found frozen into a corpsicle.
Woven throughout the series are multiple lines of tension, between the mining town and the indigenous community, between human settlement and the natural world, between the routines of a crime-solving procedural and a more profound, supernatural dread. Hoffmeister needed to sculpt a look that would serve all of these threads while creating an overall visual tone. The key for the “True Detective” cinematographer wasn’t to think about the darkness but about the light.

Writer/Producer Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) and director Zelda Williams have teamed up to deliver an outrageously ’80s new spin on Mary Shelley’s classic novel with Lisa Frankenstein, set to arrive in theaters on February 9, 2024. Ahead of the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Cody and Williams about their collaboration.
In Lisa Frankenstein, “Set in 1989, the film follows an unpopular high schooler who accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams using the broken tanning bed in her garage.”
The Coming of Rage love story stars Kathryn Newton (Freaky), Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”), Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher), Liza Soberano (Alone/Together), Joe Chrest (Stranger Things) and Henry Eikenberry (The Crowded Room).
The comedy-horror movie draws from quintessential ’80s cinema, including Weird Science, Beetlejuice, and Night of the Comet. But that...

With just a few episodes left in True Detective: Night Country, we seem to be no closer to finding out what happened to the researchers at the Tsalal Research Facility. One thing is for certain: Night Country is unlike any of the previous three seasons of the Emmy Award-winning series.
Episode three ended with two jaw-dropping scenes. In one, Dr. Anders Lund sat up in his hospital bed and, in a demonic voice, said, “Hello, Evangeline. Your mother says hello. She’s waiting for you.” In the other, a cell phone video shows Annie saying, “My name is Annie Kowtok. If anything happens to me…” before the phone is ripped away and she screams.
As episode four opens, Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) can’t sleep, so she watches the video of Annie Kowtok again.

At least we have the added day of Leap Year, and the limited IMAX “Dune: Part 2” screenings on February 25 to add some gross. Even so, this is going to be a tough month at the box office. All told, 2024 could be down 20 percent from last year. We knew going into 2024 that the year would be challenged to meet the $9 billion of 2023 — predictions assessed the domestic target at about $8 billion, about 11 percent down — but it may be a fight to achieve that much.
Only five new wide studio releases will debut this month. February 2 has “Argylle” (Universal), February 9 “Lisa Frankenstein” (Focus), February 14 “Madame Web” (Sony) and “Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount), and February 23 “Ordinary Angels” (Lionsgate).
January was a bad month, about 14 percent lower than last year with a little over $500 million. February could be less than $400 million, but with all of these new titles hailing from non-franchise and original spaces,...

Episode three opens with a trip seven years in the past and a visit with the murder victim at the heart of the investigation.
Ennis Police Officer Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) shows up to arrest Annie Kowtok for trespassing and destruction of the mines and is met with screaming from inside the building. The building turns out to be a birthing center, and Navarro discovers that Annie is currently busy performing midwife duties. Instead of immediately arresting Annie, Navarro finds herself helping with the delivery. The new mom-to-be realizes the baby isn’t crying and becomes hysterical. Finn Bennett and Jodie Foster in ‘True Detective: Night Country’ episode 2 (Photo by Michele K. Short/HBO)
HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, season four of the award-winning anthology, began with the mind-blowing discovery that an entire research team just up and vanished, leaving food on counters and a DVD playing back at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska. Episode one introduced Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster as Ennis Police Chief Liz Danvers and Kali Reis as Alaska Trooper Evangeline Navarro, who will be – reluctantly – teaming up to figure out what happened to the researchers, a disappearance that Navarro believes is connected to the cold case of a local activist and midwife who was brutally murdered six years ago.
Episode two kicks off with Liz and Officer Peter Prior (Finn Bennett) examining the researchers’ frozen bodies, which were discovered outside of town at the end of the season premiere.

Twisted engravings from Dante’s “Inferno,” mummified bodies from Mexico, and a phenomenon where rats’ tails get entangled and they thrash and flail and maul each other until they die: These may not be a few of your favorite things but they are a few of “True Detective: Night Country” showrunner Issa López’s key influences for the extremely cold case detective Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) has to solve.
Dubbed “The Corpsicle” as far back as the scriptwriting, López knew that the snarl of naked bodies — once the scientists at Tsalal research station before they, somehow, all wound up (mostly) underneath the ice — would not only be another entry in the “True Detective” pantheon of grotesque murder tableaus, but it would visually cement the tone for Season 4’s blend of crime procedural, alienation from nature, and the looming dark of something supernatural.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “True Detective” Season 4, Episode 2, “Part 2” — the second hour of “Night Country.”]
What do we know about Raymond Clark? We know he’s a scientist at the Tsalal Research Base in Ennis, Alaska. We know, thanks to his online bio shown last week, that he studies paleomicrobiology with a focus on “understanding the molecular basis of colonization and infection by Staphylococcus aureus.” We know he was the only person with his own room at the research facility, and we know that he was wearing the late Annie K’s parka in a photograph taken at that base. We know he wore it when he had what appeared to be a seizure, then turned to his colleague in the kitchen and said, “She’s awake.”
Now, after Episode 2, we know that he was in a relationship with Annie K. He rented a trailer to keep their relationship a secret, and that trailer...

Jodie Foster in ‘True Detective: Night Country episode 1 (Photograph by Michele K. Short/HBO)
Two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster takes on her first starring role in a television series in 50 years with HBO’s True Detective: Night Country. The fourth season of the award-winning anthology series marks the first season without creator Nic Pizzolatto guiding the action. Instead, Night Country has Issa López at the helm as writer, director, and showrunner of what is easily the best season since the series’ first, proving a fresh set of eyes was exactly what was needed in this case.
Season one starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and season two focused on characters played by Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Rachel McAdams. Season three, which debuted in January 2019, starred Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, and Stephen Dorff. The original 1931 Universal Monsters movie Dracula opens with an introduction to Renfield (Dwight Frye) as he travels to Transylvania to solidify business plans with Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi), only to wind up his raving mad servant instead. Director Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) and writer Ryan Ridley (“Rick and Morty”) seamlessly tie their modern reimagining of the characters to the original Universal classic before skipping ahead to the present day in horror-comedy Renfield. The leap simultaneously establishes the reverence for the horror classics as well as an anemic shorthand in the storytelling.
After the impressive introductory sequence that sees Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage composited into the 1931 film to explain their history together, we meet Renfield (Hoult) in the present as a long-suffering henchman to his narcissistic boss, Dracula (Cage). Despite an early attempt by vampire hunters to free Renfield from Dracula’s grip, Renfield remains a miserable yet loyal...

The story of Dracula reaches back to the 1897 gothic horror novel, which inspired countless iterations across every medium imaginable. Chris McKay’s Renfield takes its own stab at the infamous tale of a monster and his familiar, but with a contemporary spin on the toxic relationship between Dracula and R.M. Renfield. Of course, there’s plenty of gore this time around.

Filmmaker Damien Chazelle is no stranger to the horror genre, but he’s primarily associated with his more dramatic efforts. He became one of the most exciting names of this generation, earning praise for 2014’s Whiplash and 2016’s La La Land, while garnering divisive reactions to 2022’s Babylon. He’s comfortable working with all-star casts, showcasing his skill at a young age. Chazelle became the youngest Oscar winner for the Best Director category at 32 years old for La La Land. He wrote three horror movies that showcased his versatility along with his more recent efforts.

Matt Reeves’ Cloverfield first struck obsessive curiosity in moviegoing audiences in 2008 with its found footage-style horror filmmaking, as it left more questions than answers. Its fans begged for a sequel, as news cycles jumped at the bit to claim every secret project could be the sequel we’ve all been waiting for. However, Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane snuck into the franchise in 2016, making some of the smartest franchise decisions in recent memory.
’10 Cloverfield Lane’ introduced a new genre-bending mashup from its predecessor Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Michelle | Michele K. Short/Paramount Pictures
The first Cloverfield found the sweet spot between horror, science fiction, action, and adventure. The shaky cam was a bit too frantic for some audiences, but its sheer intensity proved invigorating for others. It was lightning in a bottle, further elevated by Paramount Pictures’ mysterious marketing tactics that never gave anything away until viewers were sitting in theaters upon its release.

In AMC Networks’ “Interview With the Vampire,” Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) is almost beyond description.
An immortal vampire hundreds of years old, he’s desperately lonely, incapable of sharing, unknowable yet hypnotically charismatic. He embodies unrestrained love and yet callously treats humans the way a cat bats a mouse around before killing it. He rejects his aristocratic background yet can’t help but embody it. Equally cruel, condescending, passionate and loving, he’s a terrifying monster and an irresistible lover.
It’s what makes him so transfixing for Louis de Pointe du Lac (“Game of Thrones’” Jacob Anderson), his undead protege and seemingly eternal soulmate.
“I think he is oscillating. He changes all the time and he’s never one thing,” Reid told TheWrap in an interview, later adding, “The relationship between Louis and Lestat is at the heart of that series and they always come back to each...

The Great, a witty take on Russian Empress Catherine (Elle Fanning), returns with more court intrigue and opulent costumes. Binge it…and these best-dressed shows too. In time for Valentine’s Day comes Happy Death Day 2U, a sequel to the 2017 horror/comedy Happy Death Day. College student Tree (Jessica Rothe) is back for another day of repeated deaths, but this time it is someone else stuck in the loop of a repeated day. Nonetheless, it is still fierce sorority girl Tree, who went through this before, who must solve the mystery and stop the murderous loop.
Audiences don’t really have to have seen the original to follow the story in the sequel, as Happy Death Day 2U provides a quick little recap of the first film, as Tree explains the situation to the new guy caught in the death day time loop.
