Dan Lin has found his right hand man.
Former Sony head turned producer Doug Belgrad is joining Netflix as vice president of film.
“We are thrilled to welcome Doug to our film team as Vice President of Film,” said Lin in a statement. “He brings a wealth of experience to the role from his many years as a respected studio executive, producer and co-financier. We will be leaning on Doug’s great creative instincts, his eye for talent, and his deep relationships across the filmmaking and talent community. We can’t wait for him to get started and look forward to his many contributions as we pursue our mission to make best-in-class films across every genre.”

The Netflix film operation under new head Dan Lin has been reorganised into four silos in a move which Screen understands has impacted 12 staffers.
Ori Marmur will preside over action, fantasy, horror and sci-fi; Kira Goldberg will oversee thrillers, dramas, and family titles; Niija Kuykendall will take charge of faith-based, young adult, and holiday features; and Jason Young will oversee comedies and rom-coms.

Dan Lin has only been in the new Netflix film chief role for a little over a week, but he’s already making his mark.
Netflix has under gone a reorg under Lin, who took over on April 1 from Scott Stuber, and the existing executives on the feature film team will now be divided based on genre, IndieWire has learned. Each of the different film team leaders will split up a few genres a piece.
Here’s how it breaks down: Ori Marmur gets action, fantasy, horror, and sci-fi movies. Kira Goldberg gets thrillers, dramas, and family films. Niija Kuykendall gets faith-based, young adult, and holiday movies, and Jason Young gets comedies and rom-coms. As a result of the changes, about a dozen individuals from the film team are being laid off, which isn’t uncommon when a new boss comes in.
How does this structure differ from what came before?...

Netflix’s film division is being reorganized under new film chief Dan Lin.
While about 15 staffers are being let go, the reorganization does not represent a reduction in force — Lin will replace the departing executives in the coming weeks as part of his new vision for his group, which will now be split up by genre.
Included in that new regime are Ori Marmur, who will oversee action, fantasy, horror and sci-fi, Kira Goldberg, who will handle dramas, thrillers and family films, Niija Kuykendall on faith-based, holiday and young adult projects, and Jason Young overseeing comedies and rom-coms.
Lin only took his desk at the streamer a week ago, but has had nearly a month to ponder what the operation should look like. He was named as the streaming behemoth’s new film head in February, replacing Scott Stuber and reporting to chief content officer Bela Bajaria.

Exclusive: A major restructure is underway at Netflix as Deadline is hearing 15 people will be laid off as the company begins a reorganization of its film department. No names were given as to who would be let go, and sources say Netflix could potentially restock with new names, but insiders say new film studio chief Dan Lin delivered the news Monday morning.
The restructuring comes following the news last month that Lin would be replacing Scott Stuber as the head of the film division. Stuber said at the top of the year he would be leaving the post, and Netflix moved quickly to fill the position.
Under the new structure, Ori Marmur will be on action, fantasy, horror and sci-fi titles, while Kira Goldberg will oversee thrillers, dramas and family films. Niija Kuykendall will handle faith-based, young adult and holiday offerings, and Jason Young will oversee comedies and rom-coms.

If Hollywood executive shuffles were an Oscar category, Scott Stuber would take home the trophy for scene-stealing announcement.
The company’s long-time (at least by entertainment industry standards) film chief revealed on the eve of the Academy Award nominations that he’s departing the streamer to start a new media company. The news wasn’t a total shock; his exit has been rumored for some time and the well-liked executive had been talking to potential financiers about a solo venture, according to a knowledgeable source.
Still, his goodbye leaves one of the most influential jobs in movies open for the taking. This will likely spark a flurry of people who are burnishing their resumes, including former Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich, Paramount’s prior motion picture group president Emma Watts and executive-turned-producer Dan Lin. Scott Stuber, who pushed Netflix to expand into blockbuster movie territory, is stepping down from the streaming service’s top film job to form his own media company.
Stuber will remain with the streamer until March, at which point Netflix Cco Bela Bajaria will temporarily assume his role while she searches for a replacement. Bloomberg first reported the news.
Under Stuber’s direction, Netflix’s feature business aggressively entered the blockbuster space, courting filmmakers such as Zack Snyder, the Russo brothers, Michael Bay and Rawson Marshall Thurber. The era began with the Will Smith starrer Bright, the 2017 film that had a reported budget of $90 million, a hefty number that turned heads at the time but would soon look quaint compared to what was to come.
Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, cost somewhere in the $250 million to $300 million range, while the Russo’ Gray Man cost in the $200 million range.

The exits of film executives Lisa Nishimura and Ian Bricke from Netflix late on March 30 shocked the documentary and indie film world. Not only were they Netflix stalwarts — Nishimura joined in 2007, when it was a DVD business, and Bricke joined in 2011 — but also for how admired and how defining of a voice they’ve been at Netflix in the last decade.

Industry will scrutnise evolving content strategy.
Longtime Netflix executives Lisa Nishimura and Ian Bricke have departed amid a restructure which will have the industry scrutinising its evolving content strategy.
Nishimura was with the company for more than 15 years and led the charge on stand-up comedy and docuseries. She most recently served as VP of independent film and documentary features and worked on the likes of Making A Murderer, My Octopus Teacher, American Factory, and Tiger King.
Among her lower budget narrative credits were Power Of The Dog from Oscar-winning director Jane Campion, and the upcoming They Cloned Tyrone and Nyad.

With the exit of long-tenured film executive Lisa Nishimura on Thursday, Netflix has officially entered its austerity age — whatever that may mean for the streaming powerhouse.
Nishimura’s 15 years at the company have spanned the streaming boom, Oscar wins and multiple restructuring efforts. Noted one industry veteran that has long worked with Nishimura, “It’s a signal that the most thoughtful, taste-driven era is being driven out.”
Under film head Scott Stuber, the film division was long bifurcated according to budgets: tentpoles and indies, with the former sitting around the $30 million to $40 million and way upwards, and the latter sitting below that. Former exec Tendo Nagenda, who joined the streamer from the four-quadrant heavy hitter Disney, oversaw films like the Russo brothers’ The Gray Man and the Extraction films, as well as the Knives Out franchise and The Old Guard. Nishimura’s team oversaw, well, most everything else.

Netflix unveiled its full slate of 2023 releases on Wednesday. It’s a line-up featuring new movies from the likes of David Fincher, Bradley Cooper, Gal Gadot, and Zack Snyder, along with sequels to “Murder Mystery” and “Extraction.”
Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur, who together run Netflix’s original studio film group, have played a major role in shaping that roster. The duo are tasked with producing the streaming service’s big-budget and four-quadrant films — think “The Gray Man” or “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story,” to highlight two of their more recent efforts. They spoke with Variety about what constitutes a success for a company that doesn’t rely on box office results, the challenges they are facing at a time when every media company has launched their own Netflix challenger, and why the company’s stock troubles hasn’t ushered in a new era of cost cutting.

One of Netflix’s top film executives, Tendo Nagenda, is exiting the streamer on Sept. 1, TheWrap has learned.
Nagenda, who has been with Netflix since 2018 and reported directly to Global Head of Film Scott Stuber, led some of the decisions around Netflix’s bigger budget, four-quadrant titles, including “Extraction,” this summer’s “The Gray Man” and the upcoming “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” Nagenda was offered the opportunity to remain with the streamer in a producing role but opted to pursue other opportunities.
Nagenda’s exit signals a larger, more simplified restructuring of its film team at Netflix, and it will now have one Studio Film team led by Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur and reporting to Stuber. Both Goldberg and Marmur previously reported to Nagenda until their team branched off and worked parallel to Nagenda’s, with both still focused on big-budget titles. Some of the upcoming films...

Exclusive: Tendo Nagenda is leaving Netflix this week. He’ll exit on September 1, a development that came from a move to simplify the structure of the film team. Under Head of Global Films Scott Stuber, Netflix has been methodically streamlining its executive structure. There will now be one Studio Film team led by Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur, whose upcoming films include Slumberland, Heart of Stone and The Killer.
Nagenda was a fast-rising Disney executive who’d spent over eight years at the Mouse House when he was brought over by Stuber as one of his early major hires. Nagenda was an important part in Stuber’s shift from steering a film studio whose inventory was made up largely of licensed/third-party films to one that developed projects in-house and secured star-driven packages and quickly turned them into big-budget films.

Netflix has promoted executives Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur to lead a new film team that will be focused on developing more big-budget, commercial films.
Goldberg and Marmur had previously reported to Tendo Nagenda, but now their team will continue to work closely and in parallel with his, with Nagenda continuing to lead a separate team that’s still focused on four-quadrant movies.
Goldberg and Marmur’s titles will remain VP of Studio Film, but their roles and responsibilities have increased, all with the eye of more growth in Netflix’s film slate. As a result, they’ll be tasked with hiring more people and more film executives.
Moving forward, Nagenda’s group is overseeing production and release of upcoming Netflix films such as “The Harder They Fall,” “The Gray Man” and “Knives Out 2,” while Goldberg and Marmur are overseeing “Don’t Look Up,” “Tick, Tick…Boom!,” “Red Notice,” “The Adam Project” and more.

Netflix is implementing some important leadership changes as it works to create more broadly entertaining film projects.
As part of that shift, executives Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur have both been promoted and will head up a team tasked with developing and producing big-budget and four-quadrant films. Their team will be autonomous from the one led by Tendo Nagenda, who is also mandated with making commercial fare. Both Goldberg and Marmur previously reported to Nagenda. Under the new order, their teams are expected to continue to work closely together.
The staffing change is slightly confusing, because it comes with much broader responsibilities, but no new titles. Goldberg and Marmur were both promoted to vice presidents of original studio film last year. It’s being done because Netflix is ramping up its output dramatically. The studio will release more than 70 films this year, the equivalent of a movie a week. Traditional...

Exclusive: Prolific duo Greg Berlanti & Sarah Schechter have set their Berlanti/Schechter Films banner to an exclusive first-look feature film deal at Netflix.
The film pact with Netflix comes two and a half years before Berlanti’s mega overall deal with Warner Bros. Television — valued at as much as $400 million — is slated to end. It signals that the most prolific producer in the history of television, who had renewed his TV studio deal with the previous Warner Media/Warner Bros TV regime, could be in play.
Berlanti, who broke his own record for most series on television at the same time multiple times, currently has 14 on-air series produced by his Berlanti Productions. That includes the popular Netflix drama You — picked up for a second and third season — and several CW shows that are popular draws on Netflix including Riverdale, All American and The Flash. His company also produced the streamer’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Exclusive: Thunder Force, Netflix’s superhero action comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer, is on pace to draw 52 million global views in its first 28 days.
That projection comes from Kira Goldberg, VP Studio Film at Netflix, who included the stat in a blog post about her motivation to green-light the project.
The 52 million number is substantial but it would not rank Thunder Force in the top echelon of all-time top Netflix original movies. Extraction leads that list with 99 million, but the roster of comedies is more rarified, with Murder Mystery (73 million) and The Wrong Missy (59 million). More recently, I Care a Lot has attracted 56 million views and Yes Day 62 million.
Netflix reported earlier this week it had 207.6 million global subscribers as of the end of March. Since a shift in methodology a couple of years ago, it has defined a view as any sampling of at least a two-minute portion of a title.

Netflix has been spending ambitiously on content, though most of the attention is paid toward its fast-growing output of original series and films. But the streamer’s deal to keep the ’90s-era sitcom “Friends” for another year proves that older series that still carry big fanbases are just as important in the high-stakes streaming wars.
Sources differ on the exact price tag that Netflix paid to keep “Friends” next year. One insider with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap that it was between $70 and $80 million, while another person with knowledge of the rights-bidding pegged the deal closer to the $100 million that the New York Times reported earlier this week.

20th Century Fox Film producer Kira Goldberg is departing the West Los Angeles lot leading up to Disney’s upcoming takeover of the studio.
Goldberg, who has a long-standing relationship with departing Fox Film CEO Stacey Snider, is moving to a production role in Netflix’s original film group, two individuals familiar with the transition told Variety. She will report to Tendo Nagenda, who departed Walt Disney Studios for the streaming monolith in August. The film division is run by Scott Stuber.
At Fox, Goldberg worked on event films that galvanized audiences without known IP. She was known as an early champion of the studio’s runaway sleeper “The Greatest Showman,” starring Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams, an original conceit that nabbed more than $430 million at the worldwide box office. She also counts titles like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Post,” and “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” to her credits.

Exclusive: 20th Century Fox has optioned the New York Times‘ best-selling series Spy School by Stuart Gibbs and set the author attached to write the screenplay based on the first title in the series.
“Fox bought my first two scripts and gave me my first overall deal when I was starting out as a writer,” Gibbs said. “They have always shown such a strong commitment to adapting great books into great family movies. So I am very excited to be working with them again, and I think this is the perfect studio to adapt Spy School.”
With more than a million copies sold and translated into a dozen languages, Spy School follows middle schooler Ben Ripley, who dreams of becoming a CIA agent. Even though he is awkward and accident prone, he is brilliant and recruited for a magnet school with a focus on science that actually is a front for a junior CIA academy.
