X-Men ’97 just finished its first season, one of the best things the MCU has ever released. Yet, way back in 1992, Fox Kids almost killed its predecessor before it had a chance to evolve.
In the new documentary special Assembled: X-Men ’97, three of the chief creatives on X-Men: The Animated Series reveal their struggles getting the show off the ground. Producer and director Larry Houston recalls working under Marvel Productions president Margaret Loesch, who always championed the X-Men throughout the ’80s, resulting in misfires like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends or Pryde of the X-Men but no ongoing series. When Loesch took a role as head of Fox Children’s Network, she brought Houston with her and gave him his shot, with one caveat.
“The folks above her didn’t believe X-Men was gonna do anything,” says writer Julia Lewald, who, along with her husband Eric, worked as a writer on the original show.

X-Men '97 was a big hit with critics right from the start, but the Disney+ revival series has now become the highest-rated Marvel Studios project - live-action or animated, big or small screen - in the 16-year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With more reviews now counted for last Wednesday's season finale, X-Men '97 has reached a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This takes it past Marvel's previous top-rated Disney+ show, Ms. Marvel (98%), and movie, Black Panther (96%), to become the most positively-reviewed MCU project of all time on the popular aggregator site.
The series wasn't only a critical favourite, as Deadline reports that May 15th's cameo-filled finale, "Tolerance is Extinction, Part 3," amassed a whopping 3.5 million views globally in its first five days on the streaming platform, making it the most-viewed full-length animated series finale since Season 1 of What If…?.

In the X-Men '97 season 1 finale, the team was thrown backwards (and forwards) in time. In 3000 B.C., we watched as Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Rogue and Nightcrawler encountered a young En Sabah Nur, a.k.a. Apocalypse.
Meanwhile, in 3060 A.D., Cyclops and Jean Grey crossed paths with a younger version of their son, Cable. As for Wolverine, Morph, Jubilee, and Storm, they're currently unaccounted for (though it's been confirmed they're not in the present and are scattered across one or both timelines).
Talking to IGN (via Toonado.com), supervising director Jake Castorena teased plans for Apocalypse in X-Men '97 season 2, explaining why the decision was made to put the spotlight back on the iconic villain.
"With the X-Men, for better or for worse, all roads usually end up leading to Apocalypse, right? It's either Apocalypse, Sinister, or Magneto," he says. "What I will say is we do things on purpose.

Exclusive: The finale of X-Men ’97 has set a promising track record for Disney+.
The episode, which debuted on May 15, saw 3.5M views globally in its first five days on the streaming platform. That makes it the most-viewed full-length animation series finale since Season 1 of What If…?, the Walt Disney Company says.
According to Disney, viewership had been growing consistently over the four episodes leading to the finale.
X-Men ’97 premiered in March with 4M views collectively across the first two episodes in their first five days on the platform.
The exact breakdown of viewership for each episode is unclear, but regardless it does indicate a strong, growing interest for the animated series, since the finale alone was nearly able to match the audience of the first two episodes in the same time frame.
As an added bonus, Disney also says that viewership for the original 1992 X-Men animated series has doubled since X-Men ’97 premiered.

Taking to social media to discuss his work on the series, former X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo revealed that Deadpool was "off-limits" to the team working on the X-Men: The Animated Series revival's first two seasons.
The prevailing theory among fans is that it must have something to do with Deadpool & Wolverine being on the horizon. The show has featured plenty of other big Marvel cameos, though, including Captain America, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange.
Marvel Studios Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum recently caught up with Screen Rant (via Toonado.com) about Wade Wilson's absence from X-Men '97. As it turns out, there's a chance we will eventually see the anti-hero make an appearance.
"I don't know that it was like a hard and fast rule that we couldn't use Deadpool," the executive explained. "We would have had to have an insanely compelling reason to bring Deadpool in.

The follow-up series to the original X-Men: The Animated Series from 1992, X-Men ’97 is gaining and rebuilding all the hearts that were broken when the original series got canceled after five seasons, and more. However, even while winning all of those hearts, this series by Beau DeMayo didn’t hesitate to break a whole lot more with its emotional plotlines that had fans sobbing.

That being said, one particular decision from the former showrunner DeMayo, who pretty much created this latest masterpiece before getting fired for reasons unknown, had the entire team sleepless at nights out of anxiety. This was because this decision included the brutal death of a fan-favorite mutant, and they weren’t sure how fans would take it after their initial reaction to the series.

The X-Men have always been some of the most prominent characters in the Marvel comics, even though their film-based adaptations after Logan were not that kindly received by fans. This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
The first nine episodes of X-Men ‘97 teased a suitably epic finale to the X-Men: The Animated Series revival, and it’s safe to say that “Tolerance Is Extinction, Pt. 3” catapulted us into the already confirmed season 2 in style. Magneto and Professor Xavier put their differences aside, Bastion was bested, and a smorgasbord of cameos squeezed in everyone from Black Panther to Daredevil.
More than just teasing a potential Spider-Man: The Animated Series reboot, X-Men ‘97’s cliffhanger ending set up what’s next for Charles Xavier’s Gifted Youngsters. The team was divided across time, with Magneto, Xavier, Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Beast trapped in the year 3000 B.C., while Jean and Cyclops are marooned in 3960 A.D. But the ending doesn’t account for all of our spandex-clad heroes, and for those questioning where a certain de-clawed Canadian is, you aren’t alone.

A theory says that these characters will be a part of Apocalypse’s Horsemen along with the one loose end when it comes to the villains for this season: Mister Sinister.
The theory suggests that Apocalypse could pit...

The three-part season finale of X-Men ’97 ended on May 15 and the fans couldn’t be more pleased with how the animated show has played out so far. However, the last episode has upset a ton of fans thanks to a cameo which none of them expected to go down the way it did. Many characters from the Marvel world showed up in the episode including Iron Man, Captain America, Daredevil, and more.

However, there was one that was missing – T’Challa’s Black Panther. While the episode did have Black Panther making a cameo in it, it was actually T’Chaka’s Black Panther and not the fan-favorite T’Challa. X-Men '97's first season wrapped up on Disney+ yesterday and showrunner Beau DeMayo has returned to X and shared more insights into the finale, "Tolerance Is Extinction - Part 3."
As we first reported on Toonado.com, he began by revealing what we've long suspected since the series started: Morph does indeed have romantic feelings for Wolverine. That was hinted at in a shower scene earlier in the season, and DeMayo has confirmed the non-binary mutant's feelings are indeed one-sided.
This adds new context to the scene in the finale when Morph transforms into Jean Grey and, in that form, tells Logan they love him. Now, we know that what initially seemed like the mutant's way of comforting his dying friend was, in fact, a declaration of love...

X-Men ’97 has been praised for the overall brilliant execution of its source material, which has been largely credited to series creator and head writer Beau DeMayo. The writer has been collecting his laurels as people took to the internet to personally thank the creator for his contribution, and lamenting how his departure from the series will affect the show.

However, DeMayo has come out praising the rest of the creative team behind the show on multiple occasions, and in the wake of the finale, the former Head Writer of the show spotlighted the director for some of the episodes, including the finale, Chase Conley. Conley, according to DeMayo, was on the same page with him when it came to adapting the story, which resulted in a show that was appreciated by everyone.

It is no secret that the Beau DeMayo show X-Men ’97 has been surprising fans with its brilliance from the get-go. One thing the show handles in a delicate way that the audiences are happy about is the dynamic between Morph and Wolverine. Now, what sets the X-Men lore apart is its emphasis on human drama amidst plenty of mutant action. It has never hesitated to dig deep into complex subject matters like relationships and cracks within friendships, among other things.

Similarly, while Wolverine’s feelings for Morph stop at friendship, Morph seems to be brewing something deeper in his mind. DeMayo, sensing the fans’ burning questions, finally addressed this matter on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). Fans are happy with the revelation!

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" follow.
Rejoice, my X-Fans, for your theories have prevailed.
The "X-Men '97" season 1 finale, the three-part epic "Tolerance is Extinction," ended in shocking fashion. The big bad Bastion sent Asteroid M on a collision course with Earth, deciding to force humanity into extinction rather than evolution. Professor X, unable to not see the good in Magneto, even after his frenemy's torturous attack on Wolverine, pulls Erik back to the light with a telepathic therapy session. The X-Men, once more including Magneto, save the world. But then they vanish, pulled through time to the past, future (Cyclops and Jean), and parts unrevealed. The past X-Men, stranded in Egypt, circa 3000 BC, meet a grey-skinned mutant that fans will certainly recognize.
As is Marvel tradition, there's also post-credits scene revealing that, while the X-Men are scattered across time, an old foe is rearing his head. In the present, En Sabah Nur's future self,...

Following the shocking events of last week's episode, the X-Men '97 finale - "Tolerance Is Extinction - Part 3" - begins with a visit to the past and the moment Charles Xavier told his friend, Magnus, that he was a mutant.
We soon learn this is all in Magneto's head, with Professor X using his immense psychic abilities to force his friend-turned-foe to undo the damage he's inflicted upon the Earth. He succeeds, but Bastion is far from done and still has an army of Prime Sentinels on hand.
Just as the villain is about to kill Cable, Jean Grey returns as the Phoenix (briefly) to deal with him and leaves Mister Sinister a husk of his normal self. However, Bastion takes advantage of the distraction to take the Techno-Organic Virus...

This article contains X-Men ’97 spoilers through episode 9.
Get ready to blast that iconic theme tune one last time because X-Men ‘97 season 1 is coming to an end. After nine episodes of spandex and Sentinels, we’re on the cusp of an epic finale that will hopefully set the stage for an equally epic second season.
Pulling off another faithful retelling of the comics, the cliffhanger ending of penultimate episode “Tolerance Is Extinction, Pt. 2” left fans reeling. As we brace for episode 10, here are the eight best X-Men ‘97 theories taking us through to the finale.
Onslaught Will Be The Final Villain
If we follow the comics, the events of 1993’s “Fatal Attractions” should lead to X-Men ‘97’s endgame villain. “Tolerance Is Extinction, Pt. 2” beautifully adapted the source material, even including the iconic moment of Magneto pulling out Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton.
This happens shot-for-shot in “Fatal Attraction”, and in its aftermath,...

After an exciting, often shocking run of episodes, the season 1 finale of X-Men '97 hits Disney+ next Wednesday, and (former) showrunner Beau DeMayo has shared some "homework" for fans who might want a cryptic hint about what to expect from "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 3."
Spoilers for last week's episode and (potentially) Wednesday's instalment follow.
DeMayo posted an image from Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 18, "Cause and Effect." This episode of the beloved sci-fi series saw the crew of the Enterprise caught in a time-loop, with the ship being destroyed over and over again, and Picard, Riker, Data and co. having to figure out how to reset the anomaly.
Does this suggest that the X-Men will find themselves in a similar situation? "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 2" certainly left the team in dire straits, with Jean Grey killed(?) by a Mr. Sinister-controlled Cable, and Wolverine's Adamantium...

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" follow.
In Part 1 of "X-Men '97" finale, "Tolerance is Extinction," Bastion's Sentinels crashed the party at the X-Mansion. Despite Wolverine and Nightcrawler holding them off, the mansion got pretty trashed.
So in Part 2, the X-Men go to an old base on Scotland's Muir Island (cue the bagpipes), once owned by Professor X's old friend Moira MacTaggert (who died in the Genosha massacre back in episode 5, "Remember It"). On Muir Island, the X-Men stock up on supplies and a new Blackbird jet.
Since this is a back-up base, their costumes are out-of-date; these "new" designs are actually going backwards in comic history. In a nod to this, as they suit up, Cyclop asks a nonplussed Cable: "What were you expecting, black leather?", flipping a joke about yellow spandex costumes from the 2000 "X-Men" movie. The original "X-Men" cartoon also started in media res with the team already assembled,...

"X-Men '97" has been a dream come true, delivering an even more mature, bold version of the original '90s animated series. Like its predecessor, it directly adapts comic book story arcs, with this show in particular choosing some rather bleak ones.
The season lured us in with the promise of fun nostalgia before shattering that notion with one of the darkest moments in the entire Marvel Studios history with the genocide of mutants in Genosha. This changed everything for the show and for the characters, challenging the very notion of the X-Men, what they stand for, and the legacy of Charles Xavier's work.
But it hasn't all been world-ending threats, the show still has the kind of interpersonal soapy drama fans have always loved from the original. We've got Rogue and (the late) Gambit, Cyclops and the two Jean Greys, with each character in the ensemble getting a chance to shine.

There's only two more episodes of X-Men '97 to go, and Marvel Studios has released a clip from tomorrow's penultimate season 1 chapter, "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 2."
The preview finds our mutant heroes suiting-up in new costumes for their impending battle with Bastion and his forces.
The outfits are a mixture of the team's classic looks, and the costumes they wore in the pages of The Uncanny X-Men. The clip also sees Jubilee burn Roberto DaCosta's business card, so Sunspot must have decided not to join the fight.
Former showrunner Beau DeMayo hinted at the costume change when he shared the unused pilot for Pryde of the X-Men earlier today.
DeMayo was also asked if he's ever heard any talk of adding Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat to the X-Men '97 roster.
"I haven’t, but my suspicion is Jubilee and Kitty slightly compete in terms of their age and Pov on the team.

Hugh Jackman will be returning to the role of Logan a.k.a Wolverine and will be making his MCU debut with the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor shares the screen with Ryan Reynolds and it will be the first official appearance of mutants in the MCU. Jackman was last seen in 2017’s Logan, after which he retired from the role.
Since the trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine dropped, fans have been speculating which variant of Logan Jackman will be playing. The trailer hinted at Wolverine being from a universe that let his world down and Jackman can be seen being regretful for the wrongs he has done. X-Men: The Animated Series has a devoted fanbase, but it's not exactly considered a classic on the same level as, say, Batman: The Animated Series.
Regardless, we all had high expectations heading into X-Men '97 and the Marvel Animation series has absolutely smashed them. Perhaps the best take on these heroes we've ever seen grace the screen, Marvel Studios will have its work cut out when it comes to topping the show with its eventual live-action X-Men reboot.
In this feature, we're exploring what's worked so well in X-Men '97 and how that can translate to theaters. In other words, these are the lessons the next X-Men movie needs to learn from the revival, especially after 20th Century Fox's hit-and-miss (mostly miss) efforts.

Former X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo has taken to social media to share a "homework assignment" for fans that may want a better idea of what to expect from the middle chapter in the three-part season finale, which airs on Disney+ next Wednesday.
DeMayo posted the cover to 1993's Uncanny X-Men #304, which marked the 30th anniversary celebration of the iconic mutant heroes, and the third chapter in the "Fatal Attractions" storyline.
Spoilers for Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1 and (possibly) Part 2 follow.
Though a few significant events occur in this issue that could inform the episode, we'd say it will most likely draw influence from Magneto's arc. Towards the end of Tolerance is Extinction - Part 1, Dr. Valerie Cooper frees Magnus from Bastion's prison, and the Master of Magnetism flies to one of the northern magnetic pole to manipulate Earth's magnetic field, using his powers to wipe...

X-Men '97's three-part "Tolerance Is Extinction" finale kicked off today and it saw the team set out to stop Bastion's plan to destroy mutantkind.
Cable explains that, in his timeline, Bastion has created a world where the few remaining mutants are subservient to his technologically advanced humans (who have all been infected by a new strain of the techno-organic virus that led to Nathan being sent into the future as a baby).
With Rogue still comatose, the X-Men see if they can learn more about Bastion; it turns out that, after his father was infected by future technology, Bastion was conceived and mutated into a being comprised of Nimrod, the Sentinel Master Mold, and a human.
The villain has turned countless humans into Prime Sentinels and, back at his base,...

Wolverine and Jean are prominent figures in comic lore, with their relationship often depicted as complicated. Jean is committed to Cyclops, yet her interactions with Wolverine create tension. Their connection fluctuates across storylines, with occasional flirtation and even instances of romantic involvement and parenthood.
Wolverine’s turbulent history and internal struggles pose challenges to stable relationships. Jean’s telepathic abilities add complexity, as she can perceive Wolverine’s emotions and thoughts. This dynamic contributes to the complexity of their relationship.
This dynamic was revisited in ‘X-Men ’97’, the revival of the original animated series. Jean’s perception of Wolverine shifted after learning about Cyclops’ connection with Madelyne Prior. However, while recent comic storylines suggest a polyamorous relationship between Wolverine and Cyclops, ‘X-Men ’97’ appears to return to the traditional pattern of Wolverine’s romantic entanglements until Morph enters the scene.

Wolverine & Jean are among the most notable comic “couples” or rather, Wolverine is a part of a love triangle that involves Jean & Cyclops. Wolverine and Jean Grey’s relationship is often portrayed as complicated or tumultuous in certain storylines due to a plethora of factors.
Jean and Cyclops have a longstanding romantic relationship, but it’s kind of messy. Jean and Wolverine often flirt and in some storylines, they even get together and have kids. Wolverine’s tumultuous past, his violent nature, and his struggles with inner demons can make it difficult for him to maintain stable relationships. Jean, being a telepath, is aware of Wolverine’s thoughts and emotions, which can further complicate their dynamic.
This relationship was once again continued in ‘X-Men ’97’, the continuation of the original animated series. Especially when Jean discovered that Cyclops connected with Madelyne Prior, and she too, started looking at Wolverine in a different light.

The X-Men have finally come back home to the MCU after the acquisition of Fox Studios by Disney. The characters will be making their official MCU debut with the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine, which sees Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and a whole bunch of other actors crossing over to the franchise.
The MCU has also reportedly begun work on making an X-Men film. An industry insider recently reported that the studio was looking for writers who could balance comedy and drama. The report also mentioned that the new films would focus more on the female mutants. While previous female-centered Marvel films have not worked for the franchise, it might just be the best foot forward with the X-Men.

‘X-Men ’97’ was a big hit for Marvel Studios. Since its first episode, it’s been getting high ratings, and fans love its story, staying true to the original, and the updates to characters.
But there have been some controversies, like when the creators revealed Morph as non-binary and hinted at a romance between Morph and Wolverine in episode 3.
During Madelyne Prior’s nightmare rampage, one standout moment involved Morph. In his dream, he catches Wolverine in the shower. Instead of looking away or being surprised, he jokes with Wolverine, saying, “Need a hand with those hard-to-reach places?” The scene takes a dark turn when Wolverine responds, “Always with the jokes, Morph? As if I don’t know?”
After Episode 7 aired, the hints of something more between Morph and Wolverine became even more apparent. In this episode, when the team confronts Bolivar Trask in Madripoor, fans noticed Wolverine and Morph sticking close together.

‘X-Men ’97’ turned out to be a surprise hit for the Marvel Studios. Ever since the first episode was released the show had consistently high ratings, and fans praised it for its story, authenticity, and faithfulness to the original show and numerous improvements made to characters.
Having said that, the show wasn’t without controversies, especially when the creators of the show went public that Morph was non-binary, and in episode 3, the romance between Morph & Wolverine was teased.
As Madelyne Prior unleashed horrific nightmares upon the team, one of the most interesting sequences was the one that belonged to Morph. In his vision he can see Wolverine in the shower, but instead of averting his gaze or acting shocked he continues to take in the view and jokes with Wolverine saying: “Needs some help with those hard to reach place?”

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
As a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series from the ’90s, X-Men ’97 has really killed it with its first season. Not only does it capture the magic of the original show but it’s also successfully broken away from the original show’s limitations. For example, animators in the ’90s had to be strategic about how they portrayed violence on a kids show — Wolverine couldn’t use his claws on human or mutant enemies, so he spent a lot of his time unloading on Sentinels instead. But in 2024, we have Jubilee graphically splitting a monster’s head open with her firework powers and Gambit impaled by the Mother Mold. It probably helps that this revival of the series is as much for nostalgic adults who want a more grown-up take on these stories as it is for kids.
But it isn’t just...
