Opening in a court room, For Ahkeem finds its protagonist Daje, an African American girl from the inner city of North St. Louis, sentenced to Judge Jimmy Edwards’ Inner City Academy (Ica), an alternative high school for those with violent and troubling records, providing one-on-one academic counseling and services. It would appear her path to college seems blocked again by an upbringing in a rough, economically disadvantaged neighborhood, although she does have a support network in her mother and well-meaning administrators at Ica.
Set partly during the Ferguson turmoil in the wake of Michael Brown’s death, For Ahkeem is a film in the classic cinéma vérité tradition, shinning a light on the plight of our inner cities. The film is a great deal less hopeful than the post-Freddie Gray Baltimore-set Step, destined to be a crowdpleaser this summer. Linda Hopkins, who starred in musicals like Inner City and the one-woman show Me and Bessie, has died at 92. Her death was confirmed by her great-niece Hazel Lindsey, according to the The New York Times.
The famed gospel singer performed for over 40 years before making her Broadway debut in Inner City, later winning a Tony for her role in 1972.
“So far as I’m concerned, they can throw away the rest of Inner City and just let a lady named Linda Hopkins stand there all night, tapping one foot slightly, opening her composed mouth to let miraculous sounds come out of it,...

Diddy’s Revolt TV is facing legal action over claims of racist treatment.
In a Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit obtained by Page Six, a group of white employees are taking on Sean Combs’ Revolt TV, claiming they were fired because they weren’t young and black. Douglas Goldstein and four other white producers on “The Breakfast Club,” Revolt’s small-screen version of their popular talk-radio program, say that they were treated “worse than other employees who were younger and African-American.”

Among the complaints are Executive Vice President Val Borland treating the white team with rudeness and condescension, while black employees who exhibited unprofessional behavior were never chastised, her brother Anthony Borland harboring “animosity” towards them, and production manager Charisse McKenzie allegedly defending the lack of punctuality of the show’s guests by claiming a white producer “did not understand the...

Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” and Clint Eastwood’s Seal movie (Untitled Jessica Buchanan Story) are just two titles among 22 projects to receive state financing for shooting in California. “Hotel Artemis” and “Inner City” were also approved for tax credits, while an untitled Universal project and an untitled Paramount title were also admitted. The latter would have been ineligible under the state’s first-generation tax credit program (Program 1.0) because it excluded projects with budgets greater than $75 million. Program 2.0 is open to film projects with any budgets (although credits are capped to each studio-produced film’s first $100 million in qualified spending). The.

Oren Moverman is responsible for two of the most impressive American screenplays of the past 10 years, “I’m Not There.” and “Love & Mercy,” both of which turn ambitious approaches to personal stories into surprisingly accessible dramas. As a director, Moverman has shown a rougher edge.
His first two features, “The Messenger” and “Rampart,” were gritty, intimate stories of angry men screwed by the system that employs them (the military and the police force, respectively), while 2014’s “Time Out of Mind” took a similar approach to a man rejected by the system altogether (Richard Gere, playing a decrepit homeless man in New York). Moverman assembles these rickety dramas in piecemeal, gradually developing psychological tension out from the moments that form their lives, like a series of sparklers ignited one by one until they form a blazing whole.

“There was her, there was me, and there was me beside myself. There were three of us.” That’s how Catherine (Lolita Chammah) describes what it was like to deal with a newborn daughter as a single parent in the deepest throes of depression. That’s all that she says on the subject, but it’s more than enough for us to understand why the woman — now in her early 30s — once felt the need to skip town and leave her baby with the child’s grandmother, Elisabeth (Isabelle Huppert, who happens to be Chammah’s mom in real life, as well).
But that was a long time ago, and Catherine has found some good pills to keep the darkness at bay. Now she’s returned to Luxembourg without any advance warning, finally ready to be a mother more than 10 years after she became one. If only it were so...

As Tiff 2016 gets underway, two titles are prompting industry buzz.
As the industry descended on Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 8-18), buyer interest heated up around Venice hit Jackie ahead of Sunday’s North American premiere and Netflix reportedly circled a global streaming deal on The Bad Batch [pictured].
Completed films in the festival, such as Pablo Larrain’s English-language debut and Lily Ana Lily Amirpour’s second feature, represent one kind of opportunity for buyers, albeit one that has prompted familiar gripes about a lack of broadly commercial must-haves.
However the late arrival of a handful of enticing packages on the eve of Toronto has quickened pulses for savvy buyers willing to risk early investment on select prospects.
This time last year Paramount pounced on a promo reel for Florence Foster Jenkins and the film has amassed $24m and counting in North America.
So all eyes will be on thriller Labyrinth, a Good Universe...

Long-time screenwriter Dan Gilroy made a real splash with Nightcrawler in 2014, his directorial debut that thrust Jake Gyllenhaal into the role of a tortured, borderline sociopath crime paparazzo who stalked the streets of Los Angeles, chasing accidents and other tragedies as they happened in real time.
Lauded with praise across the board, there’s mooted excitement circling his latest, wholly original project Inner City as it begins to take shape. Pitched as a legal drama in the vein of Paul Newman’s The Verdict, Gilroy’s sophomore effort is reportedly on the verge of landing The Equalizer star Denzel Washington.
Per Variety, it’s understood negotiations are ongoing for a role that could see Washington muscle his way into Oscar territory once more, something that we haven’t necessarily seen from the esteemed acting great since Flight four years ago. In fact, Inner City appears to fall into a similar,...

Variety is reporting that Denzel Washington is being eyed for the lead role in the legal drama Inner City from Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy. Inner City would take place in Los Angeles, the same gritty setting of Nightcrawler, which was Gilroy’s directorial debut. That film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a troubled crime paparazzo, grossed $32 million domestically on a $8.5 million budget.
The site also says that the project is being billed as a character study in the vein of Paul Newman’s 1982 classic The Verdict, and could land two-time Oscar winner Washington back in the awards race. Washington would play a lawyer dealing with a major change at his company.
Inner City hasn’t been shopped to distributors yet, but this original story with an A-list star is expected to draw competing bids and several big players, including Netflix, have been tracking the project.

Nightcrawler was one of my favorite movies of 2014, and it was even more impressive that it was the feature directorial debut of writer/director Dan Gilroy. I've been anxiously waiting to hear what his next movie would be, and now Variety says he's just finished the script for a film called Inner City, which also takes place in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles. The tone is being compared to that of the Paul Newman film The Verdict; further details are scarce, but The Playlist claims the plot centers on "an ambulance chasing lawyer who takes over a business when his boss falls sick, but who only manages to mess everything up."
The best part? Denzel Washington is reportedly eyeing the lead role. Apparently there's a ton of interest from major studios — and Netflix — leading Variety to guess that this is going to be one of the biggest sales of the fall season.

After crafting one of the best directorial debuts of its respective year, we thought it would be fairly quick for writer-director Dan Gilroy to turn around with a follow-up. It’s taken a bit longer, but two years later, we finally have word of his next project — and the A-lister who may lead it.
Variety reports that Gilroy will next direct and write the legal drama Inner City with Denzel Washington currently eyeing the lead role. The project is described as “a character study in the vein of Paul Newman’s 1982 classic The Verdict,” directed by the great Sidney Lumet. Set in Los Angeles, not much else is known about the film yet, but studios are already circling the drama, including Netflix.
Meanwhile, Washington can be seen this fall in The Magnificent Seven and the highly-anticipated Fences, which he also directed. While much of the last decade for Washington has been action features and thrillers,...

Key and Peele has completed its five-season run, but thanks to a new website, the series’ sketches will live on. Comedy Central has opened up a new digital hub for Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele’s program, and it includes every single sketch the duo produced for their show.

The two are one in the same, of course, but as a result of a strange (and apparently deathless) Internet joke, Astley boasts two very different fan bases: The people who bought his records starting in the late '80s and the people who encountered him after being tricked into clicking on the video for his 1987 hit, "Never Gonna Give You Up.

It's been 18 years since Alan Partridge first mooted the notion of Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank - and as of last week, the project is a dream no longer.

Malcolm Earl "Mal" Waldron was born on August 16, 1925 in New York City. His father worked for the Long Island Rail Road. Mal started taking classical piano lessons at age seven and, inspired by his love of jazz, also learned alto saxophone. He earned a B.A. in Music from Queens College, with the G.I. Bill (he'd been drafted in 1943 and served for two years, fortunately not seeing combat) paying for his tuition. He worked in jazz, blues, and R&B contexts and made his first recording in 1952 as a member of Ike Quebec's band. In '54-56 he was part of Charles Mingus's Jazz Workshop and recorded with Mingus. Waldron went out on his own as a leader at the end of 1956 with the album Mal/1 on Prestige and quickly became one of the prolific label's house pianists. The following year he added to his workload the position of Billie Holiday's accompanist,...

One of the best films of 2015, A Most Violent Year was about New York City in its most crime-ridden year of 1981. Oscar Isaac starred as ambitious Colombian immigrant Abel Morales, who began his career as a truck driver for a heating oil biz run by a mobster whose daughter Anna (Jessica Chastain) he eventually married. Abel took over ‘Standard Heating Oil’, and grew it quickly – but too quickly in the eyes of his competitors. As the movie opened, Abel and his attorney (Albert Brooks) are on the verge of a big move – borrowing a million and a half dollars to buy two oil tanks in a prime area of Queens. With 30 days to secure the cash needed to close the deal, it’s a risky investment, but if all goes according to Abel’s plan, he will eventually be able to store and move fuel on a larger scale. One Wild Moment
Director: Jean-Francois Richet // Writers: Lisa Azuelos, Claude Berri (original film), Jean-Francois Richet
Jean-Francois Richet won a Cesar for his 1996 debut, Inner City, but snagged international attention for his Us remake of John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 back in 2005 before directing his more notable exploration of the French gangster Jacques Mesrine, which starred Vincent Cassel in a pair of 2008 titles. This coming year will see Richet unveiling a Mel Gibson headlined film, Blood Father, but we’re more interested in his remake of Claude Berri’s 1977 film here known as One Wild Moment, starring Cassel and Francois Cluzet as friends that take their teenage daughters on vacation, though one of them has an indiscreet liaison with the other’s kid. Sounds fantastically uncomfortable.
Cast: Vincent Cassel, Francois Cluzet

Less than 300 students attend La Fe Preparatory School, a West Texas school nestled against the Mexico border, which serves grades K-7 - yet they were determined to collect the most jeans as part of a nationwide campaign...

Composer who scored nearly every Merchant Ivory film from The Europeans onwards and was an integral part of the brand
The Guinness Book of Records notes that the 44-year collaboration between the Indian producer Ismail Merchant and the American director James Ivory was the longest in the history of cinema. They might equally have added the screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, who joined the duo from the start. And a member of Merchant Ivory Productions for almost as long was the composer Richard Robbins, who has died after suffering from Parkinson's disease, aged 71.
The Ivory-Robbins working partnership, which lasted over three decades, outdid in longevity such celebrated director-composer unions as Federico Fellini-Nino Rota, Michelangelo Antonioni-Giovanni Fusco and Alfred Hitchcock-Bernard Herrmann. Robbins scored nearly every Merchant Ivory production from The Europeans (1979) onwards, and was an integral part of the film company's brand.

As Disneyland Paris suffers strikes and euro losses, roll up for Napoleonland. Just don't set off from Waterloo
As a man whose very name has come to define the process whereby reality can be sanitised, Walt Disney must be spinning in his cryogenic chamber at the continued failure to Disnefy France. But the one about the kid who goes missing in the park, only to wake woozily hours later behind Space Mountain and short of one kidney? That definitely happened.)
Disneyland Paris has just marked its 20th year in business, and the anniversary has coincided with reports of €1.9bn of debt and photographs of striking workers silhouetted against the park's enchanted castle.
