Big swings can make for big misses, and that’s the situation writer-director Quinn Shephard’s internet satire-screed “Not Okay” finds itself in, lining up all kinds of juicy targets regarding fame and shame in our social media age, but proving not so discerning about character, humor, and story when it comes to following-through.
Starring Zoey Deutch as a wannabe influencer with a cringey ploy for viral notoriety, this queasy, ambitious whiff will hopefully prove to be just a sophomore slump for filmmaker Shephard, whose multi-hyphenate 2017 feature debut “Blame” promised much from its coiled, clinical, near-noirish take on sexual jealousy in high school.

Danni Sanders, the transparently needy protagonist of Not Okay, has goals, but no real grasp of the work they require. They’re more like impatient expectations set to the warp-speed time frame of texting. Her burning aspiration is to be a writer — i.e., someone who’s famous and has lots of followers — a goal that turns into a reality as the result of a bit of attention-hungry social media fakery that she compounds with heinous lies. But as awful as she is, she’s also sweet; without pushing it or insisting that we like her, Zoey Deutch, an actor with considerable comic chops and charisma, finds the vulnerability beneath Danni’s bluster. And so even though we know, in the movie’s opening moments, that she’s headed for a fall, the film percolates with the dread that this will be the...

Aspiring journalist Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch), the insecure villain at the center of writer-director Quinn Shephard’s scattershot comedy “Not Okay,” dresses the part of a contemporary Gloria Steinem, poaching the activist’s oversized glasses and face-framing blond streaks while adding her own modern accessories: rainbow-colored nails and jewelry, with a decked-out smartphone glued to her hand. The look screams for attention. The problem is, even if Danni could manage to get noticed at her hyper-cool and competitive magazine, she’s got nothing valuable to say.
When Steinem was at this age in her career, she hustled to write an exposé of the inner workings of the Playboy Club. Danni believes, somewhat accurately, that today’s readers are more interested in writers who expose their own traumas. Alas, she doesn’t have any. The upper-middle-class Manhattanite whines to her editor (Negin Farsad) that she even had the lousy luck to...

If making a TV show is a constant juggling act, then the process of making “Birdgirl” is like adding on a poetry recitation and a graduate-level thesis on fluid mechanics.
The show, which just aired its season finale on Adult Swim, is a madcap animated exploration of a giant conglomerate’s CEO — who just also happens to be a thinly disguised superhero. It’s also following in the canonical footsteps of a beloved classic. Judy Ken Sebben (Paget Brewster), the corporate executive who moonlights as the costumed crimefighter who gives the show its name, first appeared on “Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law.”
Balancing a pre-existing character with a series of expansive adventures that cross dimensions and the boundaries of characters’ minds at breakneck speed placed the bar for “Birdgirl” extremely high.
“It’s a super simple moment and a bookend to the story, but [with] Judy looks at the cowl and saying,...

Donald Trump’s chief economic advisor, Gary Cohn, recently faked a bad phone connection to get off a call with the president, a Democratic senator revealed Wednesday.
Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware told CNN that Cohn answered a call from Trump while Democratic senators were in a meeting discussing tax reform.

That’s when Carper recalls suggesting to Cohn: “Gary why don’t you do this, just take the phone from, you know, your cellphone back and just say, ‘Mr. President, you’re brilliant! Across the Country Co-directed by comedians Negin Farsad and Dean Obeidallah, "The Muslims Are Coming!" is a 2012 documentary that follows a group of Muslim-American comedians as they tour the United States to combat Islamaphobia. Last spring when bigoted anti-Muslim ads appeared in New York City subways and buses, Farsad and Obeidallah responded with humor. They created their own ad campaign intended to provoke discussion and get people laughing: "The Ugly Truth About Muslims: Muslims have great frittata recipes" read one subway poster. But in April, prompted by the outcry over the initial anti-Muslim ads, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Mta) banned political ads from buses and subways and categorized the humorous ad campaign as political. Vaguely Qualified Productions LLC, the production company behind "The Muslims Are Coming!," sued the Mta on June 25. On...

After Hurricane Sandy made landfall in October 2012, I became one of the residents of Manhattan’s newest neighborhood: SoPo, the wonderfully NYC-esque portmanteau for South of Power. The dividing line was 39th Street, and everyone south of that on the island was without electricity for several days. I stuck it out for a day or two, and I can still remember going to bed super early (I think it was 8 or 9 o'clock at night), because once the sun has gone down, there really isn’t much to do when you have no power, no Internet and no cell service. This month, a new film about the power outage called "3rd Street Blackout" is set to begin production in New York. Helmed by first-time directors Negin Farsad and Jeremy Redleaf, the film focuses on a tech-obsessed couple who find themselves suddenly—one might even say forcibly—unplugged after Sandy. Co-directed by comedians Negin Farsad and Dean Obeidallah, the film follows a diverse group of American Muslim comics as they trek across the South (Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee) performing stand-up largely centered on their experiences as Muslims, with their lives in post–9/11 America receiving special emphasis. Pre-show happenings (setting up "Ask a Muslim" booths in public squares, or standing in public areas holding "Hug a Muslim" signs) as well as post-show Q&As are part of the arts activism agenda, as an impressive array of talking heads (from Rachel Ma...

The Muslims Are Coming! is a documentary I was very excited to see. The film had its highly anticipated world premiere at the 19th annual Austin Film Festival this year, and I knew very little about this film going in. But since I ended up at the second screening, I had already heard from many festival-goers that this was the "Must-See" movie of the festival. Though its following was modest going into the festival, the film won over its audience during both screenings and received an incredibly positive reaction, winning the Comedy Vanguard Audience Award.

Like comedians of comedy that have to pray five times a day, The Muslims Are Coming! is a new documentary featuring stand-up performances, personal diary moments, and talking heads attempting to show a different angle on what it means to be Muslim in America. Featuring luminaries like Jon Stewart, David Cross, Russell Simmons and Soledad O’Brien , it focuses specifically on the comedy of Negin Farsad (who directed) and Dean Obeidallah (who also directed). Judging from the trailer, the flick looks really lighthearted even as it tackles an unavoidable social responsibility. There’s no real way to make a documentary about Islam without taking on the All-American baggage that comes along with it. Fortunately, this doc seems content to battle fear with jokes. Check it out for yourself: You can also donate to their Kickstarter fund to help finish the film.

Sure, it's hip to be square these days, but Mc Frontalot and his rap group take it to a whole new level with sweet beats about all things nerdly. Video games, blogs that suck, robots, a fondness for goth chicks, and so much more are just fodder for this Mc and his quick rhymes. Wear your pocket protector for the March 22 Tribeca Cinemas Doc Series screening of Negin Farsad's documentary about Frontalot and the nerdcore hip hop genre, Nerdcore Rising. Farsad gave us the scoop on the fans of nerdcore, hustling to raise money the project, and why Nerdcore Rising is for non-nerds too. TribecaFilm.com: Please describe the story you tell in your film. What inspired you to tell that story? Negin Farsad: The film basically follows the first national tour of Mc Frontalot and his band. They went on the road hoping to win over fans,...

Nerdcore Rising (2008, dir. Negin Farsad) Nerdcore Rising investigates the newest wave of hip-hop - nerdcore - as it follows the godfather of the genre, Mc Frontalot, on his first national tour. Beginning in South Carolina and culminating in nerd mecca - the Penny Arcade Gaming Convention in Seattle - masses of fans across the country come out to bask in the Front's geek glory as he strives to achieve mainstream success. Mc Frontalot fanatics are the real stars of the film. They are hackers and gamers, bloggers and podcasters, they play World of Warcraft, live virtually in Second Life, and of course, they love nerdcore hip hop. In short, they are hardcore nerds, and together, they illustrate the funny, fascinating, and unapologetically uncool cultural phenomenon that is nerdcore. Mc Frontalot wants to live in a world where nerdcore is a real genre of hip-hop and where other MCs take him seriously as a rapper-de-la-resistance!

It's Thanksgiving week, meaning the holidays are actually here now, in all their actualness. But even more exciting - the new holiday menus are in at all of our theaters! We've got turkey burgers, fried brie, samosas, and apple pecan turnovers on the holiday special menu, but it doesn't stop there. The innovations keep on going on the inside of the menu, too, with the return of this summer's batwings as well as brand new fried pork chops. And... Christmas beers are in! Oh, and of course we've got all sorts of Thanksgiving menu specials this Thursday, too, including complete turkey dinners at all of our theaters. In other words - don't fill up with your family meal, because that's sooooo just the beginning.
