Is Francis Ford Coppola’s controversial magnum opus “Megalopolis” any good?
The two hour and 20 minute dystopian drama certainly divided the audience at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night with its collision course of shocking scenes: a doctored sex tape featuring Adam Driver, Shia Labeouf in drag playing a Trumpian figure and Aubrey Plaza dominating her way through a slew of men.
But there was still a huge amount of respect for iconic director Coppola, who received a four-minute standing ovation upon entering the room. After the credits rolled — which included a tribute to his late wife Eleanor — and the standing ovation began, Coppola hugged Driver and Giancarlo Esposito and got emotional as he made a speech dedicating the film to hope and family.
“Thank you all so much. It is so impossible to find words to tell you how I feel,” Coppola said, then introducing his family members in the audience.

Sofia Coppola’s creative team made two assumptions about the music of her film about Priscilla Presley that would prove wrong. While told from the emotional Pov of Priscilla, there would be a need for a handful of Elvis tracks — but those were impossible to license. Coppola and her composer/husband Thomas Mars, whose band Phoenix has written original music for several of her films, also assumed “Priscilla” would rely more on an original score.
“Thomas and the band were initially focused on what we were going to do with the score moments in the film,” Coppola’s longtime music supervisor Randall Poster told IndieWire. “It very quickly went from something we thought we were going to record an original score to curating a score. That was what was unique to this movie.”
The shift meant Phoenix would join Poster as co-music supervisor, and together, they would find the 51 pieces...

Elvis Presley‘s “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” was originally in an emotional scene in Sofia Coppola’s film Priscilla. Coppola discussed her intended use of the track in the film. She also explained what she was trying to accomplish with the movie as a whole and how it compared to the recent Hollywood film Elvis.
Sofia Coppola put an instrumental ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’ in the movie
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Coppola asked Elvis Presley Enterprises if she could use recordings of Elvis in her movie. They turned her down. She said this was because Elvis Presley Enterprises protects their brand and doesn’t like projects they didn’t originate. There’s still nods to Elvis’ music in the finished film, such as a cover of “Guitar Man” and instrumental versions of “Aura Lee” ( the folk song that inspired the melody of “Love Me Tender”). However, the movie mostly...

Jacob Elordi has Elvis fans all shook up with his recent spin as the iconic American singer in Sophia Coppola's "Priscilla." The film, based on Priscilla Presley's 1985 memoir, "Elvis and Me," takes a more grounded approach to the King of Rock and Roll, focusing on Priscilla and their complicated, sometimes enchanting, but sometimes dark relationship. But Elvis fans are burning to know - does Elordi sing in "Priscilla"?
Since the first trailer dropped for "Priscilla," the film and Elordi have been drawing comparisons to 2022's seven-times Oscar-nominated biopic "Elvis." In that film, Austin Butler donned the blue suede shoes and scored an Oscar nomination. Butler sang every one of Elvis's iconic songs used in the film, although for songs from Elvis's later years, Butler's vocals were blended with the original recordings. In the 2019 Elton John biopic, "Rocketman," Taron Egerton sang John's songs unaccompanied. The 2018 Freddie Mercury biopic, "Bohemian Rhapsody,...

If you’ve seen the new film Priscilla, you’ve likely noticed there were no Elvis Presley songs in it, despite him being a big part of the story.
The movie of course is based on Priscilla Presley‘s memoir “Elvis and Me,” where she talks about meeting Elvis, their marriage, and the factors and issues that led to the couple’s divorce.
Randall Poster, the music supervisor on the A24 pic, reveals why they didn’t include any of Elvis‘ music in the film.

“So much of the music that we landed on was born out of Sofia’s instincts, and some songs were particularly important to Priscilla herself that we learned about from the memoir or from Sofia’s conversations that she had with Priscilla,” Randall shared with Variety.

Writer-director Sofia Coppola adapts Priscilla Presley’s autobiography “Elvis and Me” for her A24 film “Priscilla,” starring Cailee Spaeny as the American icon alongside Jacob Elordi as Elvis.
“Priscilla” follows the eponymous heroine from meeting Elvis as a teenager to eventually leaving him and Graceland behind. The film marks Coppola’s third feature with A24 following “On the Rocks” and “The Bling Ring.” Coppola reunites with collaborators like cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell for the period piece. The film charts 14 years in Priscilla’s life, starting at age 14 when she met 24-year-old Elvis.
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Spaeny won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, and is set to screen as the Centerpiece feature at the New York Film Festival.
Director Coppola has opened up about how she could relate to Priscilla’s coming-of-age in the public eye.

Sofia Coppola took a seat at New York’s Bookmarc on Sunday to sign copies of her first book, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023. The event inspired hundreds to hit the sidewalk and queue up for hours in a line that snaked through the West Village streets while fans waited for their chance to meet the filmmaker and snag an autograph. “It was so nice to meet so many young kids that were all dressed up and excited,” Coppola told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday night, moments after she arrived to a different kind of scene at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont.
There were plenty of youthful attendees, albeit more famous, a frenzy for Archive and everyone was fashionably suited courtesy of Chanel, which hosted the event to celebrate Coppola’s new tome and toast their longtime ambassador, collaborator and friend. But the only line that formed was the one...

One of the most talked-about movies at this year’s Venice Film Festival was Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s vividly realized portrait of how 14-year-old Priscilla Presley fell under the spell of Elvis Presley, the rock & roll icon who was 24 when they first met. The filmmaker has earned her best reviews in years for the drama, and its star, Cailee Spaeny, took home the fest’s Best Actress award.

In May 2023, Elvis Presley‘s ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, was treated to a private screening of Sofia Coppola’s adaptation of her namesake biography film, Priscilla. Priscilla watched her story unfold as an outsider for the first time. Subsequently, she tried to “separate” herself from many of the film’s emotional scenes as her love story with the king of rock and roll played out on the big screen.
‘Priscilla’ delves into the mystique of Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s love story
Sofia Coppola wanted to bring Priscilla to the big screen to capture her “identity,” an aspect of Priscilla Presley’s story that had not yet been explored. She told The Hollywood Reporter, “Her story was so vivid in my mind and the visuals of that world, Memphis, the ’60s. It’s so American. I always like themes about finding one’s identity and teenage girls growing into adulthood.”

Sofia Coppola said the estate of late rock and roll icon Elvis Presley turned down a request to use the singer’s music in the upcoming film “Priscilla.”
Like with any true story, moviemakers often attempt to retrieve real-life content from the people they are depicting in a project.
For Coppola’s A24-produced film centered on Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla Presley, whom the musician met and married in her teens, using the rocker’s songs would be beneficial, like it was for Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated “Elvis,” which received the rights to use the artist’s music. But alas, Presley’s estate, which is predominately owned by Authentic Brands (85%), along with Presley’s family (15%), apparently rejected Coppola’s ask.
“They don’t like projects that they haven’t originated, and they’re protective of their brand,” Coppola said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “But that made us be more creative.

Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” won’t feature Elvis Presley music.
The film, written and directed by Coppola for A24, will not include Elvis songs due to the estate turning down involvement in the film. Pusha T made a surprise appearance at Phoenix’s set at Paris’ We Love Green festival on Saturday, June 3, to debut a new verse to “All Eyes on Me,” a track off last year’s Alpha Zulu.
The special cameo came at the end of a Phoenix medley that interpolated “If I Ever Feel Better” and the part “Funky Squaredance” that’s reminiscent of the crushing chord progression from Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar.” From there, the band transitioned into “All Eyes on Me,” and Pusha T took the stage.

Sofia Coppola knows what it's like to be a celebrity kid. The daughter of director Francis Ford Coppola has mostly kept her two kids, Romy and Cosima Mars, out of the spotlight throughout the years. "I don't want them ever to be jaded," Sofia told The Guardian in 2017 on why she shields her kids from the public eye. "I never saw the point of taking little kids to movie premieres and stuff. I just want them to have a childhood."
Things changed, however, when Romy recently shared a TikTok explaining that she'd been grounded for trying to charter a helicopter. "Make a vodka sauce pasta with me because I'm grounded because I tried to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland on my dad's credit card because I wanted to have dinner with my camp friend," Romy says in the March 21 video. After 18 months of delay, restraint and career/identity crises, pop music returned – rejuvenated – to the dancefloor, flouting a revived sexual confidence but also struggling with a hangover of pandemic introspection. Its lockdown listening appeared to have exploded its horizons; industrial rock, experimental electronics and a leftfield sonic mindset were wholeheartedly embraced by the mainstream, making ear-widening, genre-fluid pop records virtually the norm.
Alternative acts, meanwhile, pivoted away from the ghetto. Yard Act, Fontaines DC and Wet Leg evolved the post-punk and sprechgesang trends in more accessible directions, the latter act even defying the algorithm’s diktat of conformity to shed welcome light on their eclectic Isle Of Wight scene, turning heads to the wonderful Plastic Mermaids. There was oversharing and tubthumping aplenty in 2022, but largely in the spirit of musical renaissance and tentative celebration. And here are the records most worth celebrating.

“Woo-ha! Singing Ha-lle-lu-jah!” yelps Thomas Mars on the title track of Phoenix’s seventh album, Alpha Zulu. The tensely sprung indie-pop groove was apparently inspired by a bout of airplane turbulence – during which Mars heard the pilot repeating the words “alpha zulu”. And the twitchy-twang of the song brilliantly captures the strange sensation of exhilaration-anxiety you get on a bumpy flight: a stomach-dropper of a bass line, glitchy exhalations from the keyboard, and the sweet thermals of vocal melody. Meanwhile, Mars blurts out surreal and surrendering lines: “Pray to your God/ Cover your lies… There’s a purple cloud in the consommé, ouais!… Why choose your body over time?”
The album – like the song – is packed with an impressive amount of energy and ideas for a band celebrating their 25th anniversary. From the rubbery bounce of Ezra Koenig collaboration “Tonight” through the shimmering pulse of “Winter Solstice”, to the moody...

Phoenix continued to preview their upcoming new album Alpha Zulu Thursday with the video for the LP’s icy latest single, “Winter Solstice.”
Unlike every other track on the French band’s first album since 2017’s Te Amo, “Winter Solstice” is the only song on Alpha Zulu that wasn’t composed by Phoenix together in the studio.
Recorded over separate continents, Phoenix’s Lauren Brancowitz, Christian Mazzalai, and Deck D’Arcy built the loop for the track, which they sent over to singer Thomas Mars to build out. “Winter Solstice” marks...

Phoenix stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to show off their recent single “Alpha Zulu.” The bouncy, post-disco track comes off Alpha Zulu, Phoenix’s new LP, out Nov. 4 via Loyaute/Glassnote Records.
Alpha Zulu was produced by Phoenix and recorded in Paris’ Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The band dropped title track back in June, and followed with “Tonight,” which features Ezra Koenig. According to a press release, frontman Thomas Mars was inspired to write the track by the phrase “alpha zulu,” which he “heard a pilot repeating over the radio...

This article contains major spoilers for season 4 of "What We Do in the Shadows."
It saddens me that we've already reached the end of yet another chaotic season with our favorite Staten Island bloodsuckers (and Guillermo), but I feel much better knowing that "What We Do in the Shadows" will rise to see another full moon. Not only does this beloved genre comedy series continue to boast a killer ensemble, but it easily stands as one of the funniest shows on television.
Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Matt Berry, Mark Proksch, and Harvey Guillén have all valiantly fought over who holds the trophy of series Mvp at some point or another (although Berry has claimed the title the most). These characters are vital to the beating heart of a silly show about vampire roomies, cursed hats, drinking drug blood, and living next door to the world's biggest "Ocean's Twelve" aficionado. It's...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “What We Do in the Shadows” Season 4, prior to Season 4, Episode 10, “Sunrise, Sunset.”]
As the old saying goes, you know it’s a great season of TV when vampire partygoers playing hot potato with Sofia Coppola’s decapitated head doesn’t even rank as the most memorable scene.
“We got lucky,” showrunner and executive producer Paul Simms said of casting the Oscar-winning writer in the cold open of Episode 9, “Freddie,” along with her husband and lead singer of Phoenix, Thomas Mars. “They love the show. Both of them are big comedy fans in a way you wouldn’t expect.”
To start the scene, Coppola and Mars are seated with fellow indie director Jim Jarmusch at Nadja’s, a vampire nightclub named after its founder/owner, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou). Looking over the menu, Coppola inquires about the 5,000 “celebrity special,” and — as is fitting for the filmmaker — she’s shown, not told,...

This What We Do in The Shadows review contains spoilers.
What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 Episode 9
While not quite achingly funny, What We Do in the Shadows’ season 4 episode 9, is about growing pains. “Freddie” is a sad, and somewhat cruel installment in the Staten Island vampire saga. We finally learn who Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) has been covertly sharing stolen moments of cell phone intimacy with, but it brings double the trouble. While a certain freakish draw to Nadja’s (Natasia Demetriou) vampire club Nadja’s wants an increase in pay but grows in size instead.
Nadja’s is so swarming with guests, a denim cape doesn’t cut it at the velvet rope. The vampire club and its resident creepy performer have gotten on the radar of human celebrity guests. Fran Liebowitz is on an upcoming guest list because “she says what we’re all thinking,” according to Nadja,...

Phoenix is offering fans a taste of the group’s forthcoming music with the release of single “Alpha Zulu.” It’s the newest music from the visionary pop group since the 2020 release of “Identical,” featured in the Sofia Coppola film On the Rocks.
According to a release, frontman Thomas Mars was inspired to write the track by the phrase “alpha zulu,” which he “heard a pilot repeating over the radio during a turbulent flight in a storm.” The bouncy track oozes with mid 2000s post-disco energy, making it primed for summer party playlists.

“Most musicians know how to whistle,” reveals Thomas Mars, whose band Phoenix did the music for “On the Rocks.” In the A24 film streaming on Apple TV+, Bill Murray’s character Felix chastises his daughter Laura (Rashida Jones) for forgetting how to whistle. In our exclusive video interview, Mars continues, “Whistling is a big part of how you get harmony and learn to tune. I’m lucky it works for me. I don’t know if you can lose the ability to whistle like Laura, but all Phoenix musicians are pretty good at whistling.”
In “On the Rocks,” Laura suspects her husband of having an affair and recruits her father Felix to get to the bottom of things. The film is written and directed by Sofia Coppola, who won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for her previous Murray film “Lost in Translation” (2003). Mars is married to Coppola and says that...

A version of this story about Phoenix, “On the Rocks” and the Original Song contender “Identical” appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars described the track “Identical” as though it were Cinderella’s glass slipper: It’s a song that delivers a first taste of the French rock band’s next album, which will be its first since 2017’s “Ti Amo,” but it’s also a perfect fit for the conclusion of Sofia Coppola’s “On the Rocks.”
The song, he said, had an unexpectedly “strange echo to the movie” and to the loving but strained relationship of the characters played by Bill Murray and Rashida Jones.
“There are many coincidences that are happy accidents, but once you listen to the song, that works with the Felix and Laura relationship,” Mars said. “That has a father-daughter echo to the relationship. It’s...

For Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars, the scoring and music supervision on “On the Rocks” became the highlight of his five-film collaboration with director and wife Sofia Coppola. Indeed, this father-daughter comedy, starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones, turned into a musical expression about bonding over New York on so many levels.
For starters, Coppola came up with Chet Baker’s “I Fall in Love Too Easily” as the perfect entry for Murray’s charming and irresistible Felix, the Don Juan-like art dealer. The movie opens with a voiceover of Felix telling young Laura (Jones) that her heart will always belong to him, even after she gets married. Fade in to Laura and husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) running off after their wedding for a playful tryst to the romantic strains of the iconic trumpeter Baker. It immediately conveys Felix’s strong hold on her, which must be resolved during their later...

In some respects, Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars and his bandmates were already prepared for the many creative pivots the Covid-19 pandemic has necessitated.
Even before the pandemic, the group had established what Mars describes as an “archiving system” from the in-person recording sessions for its 2017 album “Ti Amo” and forthcoming follow-up so that each member can complete any remaining work remotely. Even before the Zoom boom, the process helped Mars established a good virtual workflow with his bandmates.
“It’s something we’re really proud of and we’re constantly improving because we are far from each other: I live in New York City, one lives in Rome, two are in Paris,” Mars says. “Whenever we meet, we record everything we do together so we have enough to work on when we separate.”

It was a girls’ night out this week for Sofia Coppola and 13-year-old daughter Romy Mars!
The mother-daughter duo attended the Marc Jacobs Fall 2020 runway show during New York Fashion Week on Wednesday.
The pair were spotted at the event, with Coppola looking effortlessly chic in a black-and-white striped sweater, while Romy, who is rarely photographed, sported an oversized blue sweater and some dainty silver necklaces.
Romy and her 9-year-old sister Cosima do not often attend events with their mom or their father, Thomas Mars.
Coppola and Romy watched the show as Miley Cyrus made a surprise appearance on the catwalk.

Born into film ‘royalty’, Sofia Coppola defied sceptics with a string of distinctive films, most recently The Beguiled, for which she won best director prize at Cannes. Here she talks fathers, fashion and the female gaze
Film-makers are not, for the most part, paragons of cool, but Sofia Coppola is different – a director whose pristine aesthetic extends beyond the screen into what her close friend the fashion designer Marc Jacobs admiringly terms an “art of living”. Stephen Dorff, star of her 2010 film Somewhere, deems her coolness contagious: “When she casts me, everyone thinks I’m cool again.” And down in the more lowly ranks of film criticism, standard-issue scepticism becomes fannish enthusiasm when I mention I’m about to interview her: “Oh God, I just want her life,” one friend gushes.
Six feature films into her career, Coppola remains unique in a film industry that, in particular, rarely makes celebrities of female directors.

Looks like Sofia Coppola’s latest film will have an unexpected contemporary flair (paging “Marie Antoinette”), as The Playlist reports that French rockers Phoenix are scoring the Civil War-era drama, debuting at Cannes later this month. The outlet reports that the official Cannes Film Festival page lists the group as scoring the steamy feature, which should add an entirely new dimension to what already looks like a real banger from Coppola.
It’s hardly the first time Coppola has worked with the group (on the personal side of things, she’s married to frontman Thomas Mars), and the rockers previously provided songs for her films “The Bling Ring” and “Somewhere.” They even popped up in person in Coppola’s most recent outing, the music-infused Netflix special “A Very Murray Christmas.”

Not since the days of Paul Thomas Anderson and Fiona Apple has there been a music video partnership quite as much fun as the one between Sofia Coppola and Phoenix. Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars has been providing music for now-wife Sofia Coppola‘s movies for decades now, with the band appearing on the soundtracks for “Lost In Translation,” “Marie Antoinette,” and “The Bling Ring,” and Coppola had previously returned the favor by shooting their 2013 music video for the song “Chloroform.” And now Coppola has edged just a little closer to balancing out the scales, bringing her husband’s band along — as well as some familiar faces from her movies — in this new ad for the Calvin Klein spring collection.

Written by Murray, Coppola and Mitch Glazer, the project is described as “an homage to the classic variety show,” with Murray (as himself) fretting that no one will show up for his TV show due to a terrible snow storm in New York City.

Netflix has a Christmas special coming called A Very Murray Christmas, which will star Bill Murray as himself. The story centers on Murray worrying that “no one will show up to his TV show due to a massive snowstorm in New York City. Through luck and perseverance, guests arrive at Gotham’s Carlyle hotel to help him — dancing and singing in holiday spirit.”
Guest include George Clooney, Paul Shaffer, Amy Poehler, Julie White, Dimitri Dimitrov, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, David Johansen, Maya Rudolph, Jason Schwartzman, Jenny Lewis, Phoenix’s Thomas Croquet, Christian Mazzalai, Laurent Mazzalai, Frederic Moulin, Rashida Jones, Miley Cyrus and more.
Is it just me or is that a lot of guests? Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) will write and direct the special.
