Peacock has ordered a limited scripted series about notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy, Variety has learned.
The announcement was made during the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena. The series is inspired by the 2021 Peacock/NBC News Studios docuseries “John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise,” with the scripted series sharing the same name.
Patrick Macmanus will serve as writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the show. Macmanus previously created the first season of the Peacock true crime series “Dr. Death” and the Hulu true crime limited series “The Girl From Plainville,” with Macmanus also serving as showrunner on both shows.
Macmanus will executive produce via Littleton Road Productions along with Kelly Funke, with Noah Oppenheim and Liz Cole of NBC News Studios also executive producing. UCP, where Macmanus is currently under an overall deal, will serve as the studio.
Macmanus is repped by UTA and Cartel Entertainment.

Simu Liu is going back to the future. Well, like, five minutes into the future.
Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for an untitled espionage series starring Liu, in which the “Barbie” actor will play first-generation-American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale. He realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears.
James Wan is among the executive producers on the series, which was written and created by Thomas Brandon (“Legacies”). Other EPs on the project include Michael Clear and Rob Hackett from Wan’s Atomic Monster. Danielle Bozzone will oversee the project for the production company, which recently merged with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse.
Wan/Atomic Monster and UCP/Peacock are already collaborating on a contemporary horror thriller now titled “Teacup.” Ian McCulloch is writing that one, and executive producing alongside Wan.

There’s a new senior player in TV’s true-crime industry.
Paul Ryan has been named executive producer of NBC News’ “Dateline,’ reporting to Liz Cole, who became the long-running newsmagazine’s senior executive producer last year. Both elevations come after David Corvo, the NBC News executive who had long overseen the series, moved to tackle consulting duties.
Ryan has been with show for several years, and was most recently its senior producer and creative director, managing all aspects of the editorial and production process. But he will now be tasked with other duties, particularly finding ways to keep “Dateline,” with its long run of murder mysteries and occasional big “gets” by NBC News correspondents, more arresting than ever.
Like its main counterparts, CBS News’ “48 Hours” and ABC News’ “20/20,” the “Dateline” franchise extends well beyond its TV perch. NBC sells the show into syndication, and “Dateline” stories also fuel podcasts,...

The first two episodes will be available for download and streaming for free across podcast platforms on December 5; the remaining three will drop over the following two weeks. Subscribers to Dateline Premium on Apple Podcasts can listen to the first two episodes now and will receive subsequent episodes early.
Mortal Sin investigates how the death of a pastor’s wife after a house fire uncovers a web of sex, murder, and deception.

David Corvo, the guiding force behind hundreds of hours of NBC’s signature “Dateline” newsmagazine, will step away from the role at the end of 2023, bringing to a close a TV-news career that has spanned four decades.
Corvo has been with “Dateline” in some capacity since joining NBC News in 1995 as a vice president responsible for primetime news programming. Under his aegis, the show has morphed from a general-interest newsmagazine — anchored in its earliest days by Stone Philips and Jane Pauley — to a massive content franchise focused intently on true-crime stories. Over the years, “Dateline” has expanded into podcasts; a 24/7 streaming channel; and even scripted fare, as seen in the 2022 NBC limited series, “The Thing About Pam,” which starred Renee Zellweger.
Corvo, who has been senior executive producer of “Dateline,” will hand off those duties to Liz Cole, the program’s executive producer and president of NBC News Studios, where she will maintain her duties.

‘The Disappearance of Shere Hite’ Trailer: Dakota Johnson Narrates an Elusive Sex Reseacher’s Legacy
After publishing “The Hite Report” in 1976, sex researcher Shere Hite all but vanished from the public eye. Now, thanks to documentarian Nicole Newnham and narrator/executive producer Dakota Johnson, Hite’s legacy is on full display.
“The Disappearance of Shere Hite,” which premiered at Sundance 2023, is written and directed by Oscar-nominated “Crip Cramp” filmmaker Newnham.
The bestselling 1976 book “The Hite Report” liberated the female orgasm by revealing the private experiences of 3,000 anonymous survey respondents. Shere Hite’s findings rocked the establishment, presaged current conversations about gender and sexuality, and made her a target of the patriarchy. Actress Johnson narrates the documentary, which charts Hite’s explosive rise to fame and then mysterious retreat, executive produces through her TeaTime Pictures banner. The film was also just nominated for three Critics Choice Documentary Awards: Best Archival Documentary, Best Biographical Documentary, and Best Narration.
As Hite herself says in the trailer, “Equality isn’t so dangerous to me.
