[Note: With the film out this week on digital, here’s a reposting of our review of Father of Flies from its Grimmfest screening last year]
Father of Flies comes from the minds of writers Nadia Doherty and Ben Charles Edwards (also directing) and attempts to tread the same creepy path of films such as Hereditary, The Lodge and The Blackcoat’s Daughter. The film tells the story of a young boy and his older sister who suddenly see their mother pushed out of the family home and a new woman replacing her. The new woman has a sense of creepiness about her (not just a dodgy accent) and there might just be something supernatural occurring.
There are times when the movie does make it work with that dark, slow and occasionally tense tone that...

Story of a troubled family aims for the higher registers of horror, but for all the jump scares doesn’t quite make it
This low-budget work by British director Ben Charles Edwards is a bit all over the place, despite its restricted use of locations. It revolves around an unhappy American family in an isolated house where things go bump in the night, leaving youngest child Michael extremely worried about what’s under his bed. Unfortunately, dad Richard (Nicholas Tucci) is too busy going off on business trips to help, and Michael’s big sister Donna (Page Ruth) has her own things going on, including getting drunk and hating on frosty Coral (Camilla Rutherford), formerly the live-in nanny but now pregnant with Richard’s child and about to become Michael and Donna’s stepmother.
Coral certainly doesn’t make it easy for the kids to bond with her, given her propensity to use a creepy,...

"Someone's been inside this house!!" 101 Films has revealed an early promo trailer for Father of Flies, an indie horror thriller from filmmaker Ben Charles Edwards. This premiered at numerous genre festivals last year, including Grimmfest & Raindance in the UK and Screamfest in the US. A haunting tale of family life. A vulnerable young boy finds his mother pushed out of the family home by a strange new woman, and he must confront the terrifying supernatural forces that seem to move in with her. A troubled father brings home a new woman but something is strange about her - what is this haunting supernatural force and what does it want? "This evocative tale is unrelentingly suspenseful, eerie, and sinister, packed with frights and anxiety-filled terror." The indie film stars Camilla Rutherford, Nicholas Tucci, Sandra Andreis, Page Ruth, Keaton Tetlow, Davi Santos, and Malik Ibheis as "Pogo". This looks much better than it sounds,...

Father Of Flies
Recently screened at Raindance, Ben Charles Edwards’ Father Of Flies is a new horror film which uses old tricks to powerful effect. It’s the story of a family in crisis following a bitter divorce, and is told mostly through the eyes of young Michael (Keaton Tetlow), who is becoming increasingly afraid of his new stepmother (Camilla Rutherford). With father Richard (Nicholas Tucci) trying to provide for the family and Michael’s teenage sister Donna (Page Ruth) increasingly distracted, the suffering of the past could be about to lead to more. It’s based on a story which Ben wrote as a child, and when we met up to discuss the film, I began be asking about that.
“Well, I wrote a short story as a child that was quite similar,” he says. “It was about how we can villainise the wrong woman – the stepmother – and how we're too quick to.

“Hired to be fired.” That’s what radio DJ Amy Marlowe (Caroline Williams) tells her boss (William Youmans) one rainy night before her show… her final show at Wlst Radio, to be exact, as she’s getting the proverbial boot to make room for young up-and-comer Sienna (Nicole Kang). Amy knows that 30 years at one radio station is a damn good run for any DJ, but that doesn’t make leaving any easier. There’s the lack of respect (and sexual harassment) from her superior, the audacity to be asked to have Sienna shadow her on her last day, the fear of a forced major life change, and then there’s that pesky bite on Amy’s neck that isn’t helping matters, either, especially since it may have come from a bat with rabies… or something much, much worse.

Tagline: "There's Never Been a Night Like this One." Ten Minutes to Midnight is a vampire thriller. From Mainframe Pictures, this title involves a hurricane, which traps a radio host inside. Meanwhile, Amy's replacement is acting strangely and confined to the shadows. As well, this title was developed by Erik Bloomquist (She Came from the Woods), with co-writer Carson Bloomquist. Ten Minutes to Midnight has a cast, consisting of: Caroline Williams (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Nicholas Tucci (You're Next) and Nicole Kang. The film's early film poster and a production update are hosted here. The first graphic shows several of the characters. A vampire looms above, under the tagline: "Late night bites." A Hurricane rages as a character, forefront, screams. Vampire bats and radio towers frame this film poster as Ten Minutes to Midnight begins its debut, this week. Ten Minutes to Midnight is set to show at Cannes,...

Long Lost is a low budget thriller mystery that includes the immortal line “you have asparagus in your teeth”. Our young slacker of a protagonist, Seth gets invited to a mansion by cryptic letter (as we often do). From this point we are introduced to a slightly creepy rich chap who “values his privacy” and thinks that “the internet is a creepy place”. It sure is.
The film also has the line “I handle my own wood”. Who doesn’t.

This a dark contemporary psychological thriller. A real walk down a strange path of family, wealth, sex and life-threatening danger.
Long Lost stars Adam Weppler as Seth, a 23 year old young man invited to spend a long weekend at a Connecticut mansion with his long lost millionaire half-brother Richard (Nicholas Tucci) who, along with his enigmatic, sex starved live-in girlfriend Abby (Catherine Corcoran), leads Seth down a psychological rabbit hole wherein luxury and temptation are intermingled with treachery and taboo.
When Seth receives a mysterious letter inviting him to spend the weekend at a secluded mansion in the country, he soon realizes the people inside the house may know him better than he knows himself. His half brother is hostile, supercilious and almost threatening and seems to hold secrets about Seth’s origin. But he is angry (at Seth?) and seems to disapprove of Seth, so Seth almost immediately wonders,...

"You gotta give me a chance to make it right." Mainframe Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a new indie thriller titled Long Lost, another one of these secluded mansion getaway turns into a violent, scary survival films. Long Lost is the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Erik Bloomquist, and is about a guy who gets a letter to meet a person at his house for the weekend. Things start to get strange, and it turns out he knows more about him than it seems. Starring Adam Weppler, Catherine Corcoran, and Nicholas Tucci. This reminds me of plenty other films like this, namely The Invitation and The Gift most recently. Of course they try to throw in some unique twists and turns, but I'm not sure how it will turn out. Check it out. Here's the first official trailer (+ new poster) for Erik Bloomquist's Long Lost, direct from YouTube...

While you weren't looking, the latest chapter of the usually thrilling Syfy series, Channel Zero, has booked its return.
In an unusual move, Dream Door is considered the second half of Channel Zero Season 2 and will be airing all six of its episodes on succeeding days beginning October 26 through October 31.
Since the premiere of Channel Zero: Candle Cove, the series has done much to prove horror can be done well on network television. The key is short, focused seasons and an anthology format.
There needed to be a bump in the road eventually, and Dream Door doesn't live up to the others.
The Dream Door installment of Channel Zero is based upon a creepypasta short story titled "Hidden Door" by Charlotte Bywater.
From what I understand, there are liberties taken with all of the stories, so this review isn't a judgment on the original story that I haven't read. It's...

Having your debut feature play at London’s Frightfest is a huge honour. So for Jenn Wexler’s debut, The Ranger to also play on the festival’s opening night is a very big deal…
The Ranger tells a tried and tested genre story. In very simple terms, a group of teens go to stay in a cabin in the woods. There’s no evil spirits, no zombies, no ghosts, no aliens, just – as the title would suggest – one park ranger. But he is nasty enough to cause plenty of problems for the group. Jeremy Holm plays The Ranger, he looks nasty, angry and continuously like he wants to start a fight. And although I wouldn’t say I felt any sympathy for him,...

Spanish actress and triple threat Ana Asensio wrote, directed and starred in her feature film debut “Most Beautiful Island,” which won South by Southwest’s grand jury award for narrative feature, and audiences will finally be able to see the thriller, billed as being in the vein of “Eyes Wide Shut” about immigrant life in America, when Orion Pictures and Samuel Goldwyn Film release the movie this fall.
Co-starring Natasha Romanova, David Little, Nicholas Tucci, Larry Fessenden and Caprice Benedetti and produced by Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix, “Most Beautiful Island” had its New York premiere at this week’s BAMcinemaFest. The film is a psychological thriller set in the world of undocumented female immigrants hoping to make a life in New York City.

Before the day is over, she finds herself a central participant in a cruel game where lives are placed at risk for the perverse entertainment of a privileged few.

We live in scary times that can often feel like lot more unsettling than any fictional horror movie, but some of the best horror movies tap into real world terrors — and that’s especially true of the highlights from the last two decades of the genre, one of the most varied in its history. From graphic depictions of gory showdowns to subtler looks at psychological dread, the best horror movies of the 21st century typically focused on a handful of people struggling to survive a dark force beyond their comprehension. Who can’t relate to that? Here are 20 of the most potent examples, ranked from top to bottom.
20. “The Descent” (2005)
Neil Marshall’s economical monster movie takes place almost exclusively within the confines of a shadowy cave and the terrible, terrible things lurking within it. After a gradual beginning in which coworkers and friends venture into a cave during their...

Ana Asensio’s Most Beautiful Island is a stormy, unpredictable endurance test from start-to-finish. At its core, immigration fears and female perspectives sing a plight of New York City’s rough waters. Command and circumstance manipulate those less fortunate, who will do anything to survive. Undocumented “citizens” walk alongside more entitled Americans, yet their experiences are so disconcertingly different. Do they always involve a life-threatening game of chance, as Asensio’s film engages? I would assume – maybe incorrectly – that answer is no. But still, given cinematic context, messages of tenacity are read loud and clear. Strung with tension, and heated to an aggressive boil.
Apart from writing and directing Most Beautiful Island, Asensio also stars as lead subject Luciana – a New Yorker with many responsibilities. Because she’s undocumented, most of Luciana’s work comes from odd-jobs paid in cash. Babysitting bratty kids and whatnot. Either that, or she scams...

The Cobblestone Corridor
Written and directed by Erik C. Bloomquist
U.S.A., 2015
In 2005, writer-director Rian Johnson exploded onto the film scenes with one of the most unique movie experiences in recent memory by delivering Brick, a neo-noir set in a Californian public high school. The story featured a cast of talented young actors spewing spiffy dialogue, and their characters getting into deep and dark trouble befitting of the sort of yarns told back in the 1940s and 1950s, only that is was happening in a modern setting and at school. It was fresh whilst calling back to film noir of yore. A decade later, writer-director Erik Bloomquist tries his own hand in similar but not identical fashion with The Cobblestone Corridor, a short film (25 minutes) transpiring in the confines of a private high school.
Allan Archer (Bloomquist) is the editor in chief of the institution’s newspaper, The Gazette.

The Worst Year of My Life, a new romantic drama from budding writer/director Jonathan Smith, was reportedly made on a $15,000 budget. It probably set some sort of record for most individual scenes in an 80-minute feature – quite an accomplishment given the financial restraints – but Smith should have been shooting for dramatic quality, rather than quantity, in a film with middle-school level acting, tired plotting and misanthropic characters who are very difficult to root for. The production value is impressive; unfortunately, it is also one of the only commendable things to say about this dopey, dour story about a failed relationship.
Although tailored for release on Valentine’s Day weekend, The Worst Year of My Life has an irredeemable bitter streak, focusing on the aftermath of a three-year stint between stand-up comic Kyle (Trevor St. John David) and computer programmer Amber (Amy Vorpahl). Smith speeds through the meet-cute, the move-in...

Animal masks and improvised weapons abound as the home invasion horror You're Next arrives on DVD. Our review's here...
There's much that's familiar about low-budget horror You're Next: the masked killers, the improvised weapons, the bickering survivors, the remote setting. But director Adam Wingard injects both a playfulness and a Giallo-like sense of mystery to his home-invasion slasher, and the result is refreshingly economical and direct.
In an unfeasibly large, austere country mansion, conspicuously wealthy parents Aubrey and Paul (Barbara Crampton and Rob Moran) welcome their litter of spoilt offspring to a rare evening get-together. Among them is Crispian (Aj Bowen), a meek teacher who's constantly browbeaten by his cocky, over-achieving brother Drake (Joe Swanberg). Then there are two other siblings, younger brother Felix (Nicholas Tucci) and younger sister Aimee (Amy Seimetz), plus their respective other halves, the most prominent and sympathetic...

Directed by Adam Wingard (VHS, A Horrible Way to Die) and set during a family reunion in a remote part of the countryside in the Us, You’re Next sees the moneyed Davison family besieged by lunatic killers in creepy animal masks. Fortunately, it turns out that Erin, the girlfriend of one of the eldest brother is something of a total bad-ass herself and is soon rallying the family around to fight back with makeshift weaponry and traps. Thus begins a small scale war with their attackers. Who will survive and what will be left of them?
Despite my initial excitement, I was actually fairly nonplussed by You’re Next at first. It seemed fairly stolid, with broadly drawn characters and an uninventive set up.

Happy 2014 Everyone! Looking back, I thought 2013 was an exceptional year for horror, especially for independent genre fare that ended making up most of my favorite films over the last 12 months. In fact, 2013 ended up being so good, even a number of remakes that came out this year managed to be as strong as their original horror peers and that’s pretty damn impressive.
Here’s a look at some of my very favorite things that happened in horror along the way during 2013:
John Dies at the End:
I’d been waiting patiently to see Don Coscarelli’s John Dies at the End ever since I chatted him up about the project at SXSW 2012. Thankfully, the film didn’t disappoint at all when it was released last January. Wonderfully weird and oddly heartfelt, no one has quite mastered the art of the unexpected like Coscarelli has throughout his career...

The Primer director delivers another Us indie brainteaser that will leave minds blown and chins comprehensively scratched. A young woman who has been kidnapped, exposed to a parasite and robbed meets a man who seems to have endured the same horror. What any of that has to do with the maggots that possess psychedelic properties, or the sound recordist and his obsession with pigs, is anyone's guess. The mysteries endure long after the credits roll, and Carruth's direction is spellbinding enough to keep you puzzling over them – just about.

Director: Adam Wingard. Writer: Simon Barrett. Cast: Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, Aj Bowen and Joe Swanberg. The horror feature You're Next was created by Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, two of the filmmakers behind V/H/S (2012) and V/H/S 2 (2013). These two filmmakers are no stranger to horror and neither are the actors. You're Next is a home invasion thriller, which hosts some mystery, not unlike Bryan Bertino's The Strangers. A family reunion is ruined and most horrorites will find You're Next an entertaining and thrilling time. The film unravels quickly. A mother and father have invited their progeny to a country retreat. It is their 35th wedding anniversary and all of the siblings are in attendance: Felix (Nicholas Tucci), Crispian (Aj Bowen), Drake (Joe Swanberg) and Aimee (Amy Seimetz). The usual sibling rivalries unfold, but events heat up even more when three masked killers enter the mix.

Lionsgate’s You’Re Next takes one of the most terrifying film genres, the home-invasion movie, and turns it on its head—adding dimension, drama, and bone-chilling realism to one of life’s most universal fears. The story follows an upper-class family, the Davisons, who are as rich as they are estranged. In an earnest attempt to bring everyone back together, Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their four children and their significant others to a family reunion at their remote and slightly rundown weekend estate.
At first it seems like decades-old sibling rivalries will derail any hope of reconciliation. But that quickly, and very abruptly, becomes the least of the Davisons’ concerns when their home comes under siege by a mask-wearing team of crossbow-bearing assailants. The family has no idea who’s attacking them, why they’re under attack, or if the attackers...
