Though the reigning Asian Games Champions Japan got off the blocks with the right tempo to build pressure on the hosts in the first quarter, India did well to win back-to-back PCs early in the game.
It was Taiki Takade who was not five metres away from India’s free hit which prompted the PC. After three retakes, India couldn’t...

Mumbai, Jan 12 (Ians) Between them they have the experience of playing five Hockey World Cups and thus former India captain Mm Somaya, Edgar Mascarenhas and Adrian D’Souza believes the upcoming edition of the mega event starting in Rourkela on Friday is a huge opportunity for India to end the four-decade medal drought in the mega event.
Somaya has played in two World Cups, Mascarenhas in the 1990 event in Pakistan and D’Souza in the 2006 and 2010 editions. But all three believe that with India playing at home and considering the amount of time the players have spent together as a team, the 16-team event being held at Rourkela and Bhubaneswar is a great opportunity for them.

For the second year in succession, Olympic bronze medallist Sreejesh has won the Fih Goalkeeper of the Year (Men) 21-22 award, finishing ahead of stalwarts like Pirmin Blaak of the Netherlands, Loic Van Doren of Belgium, Alexander Stadler of Germany and Arthur Thieffry of France, in the vote conducted by the international hockey federation (Fih).
As he won the award for the second year in a row, many would believe that it might not hold much importance for Sreejesh but the 34-year-old goalkeeper from Kerala, who is a sports officer working for the State government, says it has motivated him to keep playing for four-five years. It also gives him the confidence to go for his next target — a medal in the upcoming Fih Men’s World Cup in Odisha (January 2023).

New Delhi, Oct 5 (Ians) India’s men’s and women’s hockey goalkeepers PR Sreejesh and Savita Punia have been voted the Fih Goalkeepers of the Year 2021/22 in their respective categories, according to the international hockey federation (Fih).
Savita was magnificent in the Indian goal, often surprising her opponents with her ability to pull off saves from impossible situations during the 2022 Tokyo Olympics and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
“It therefore comes as no surprise that she received nearly twice as many votes from her peers around the world, as anyone else nominated in the best goalkeeper category at the Fih Hockey Stars Awards,” said an Fih statement.
Savita is not just India’s last line of the defence, she also plays a crucial role in leading the side, having taken over the captaincy from Rani Rampal, who missed a large part of the previous year due to injury.

Bengaluru, Jan 18 (Ians) India's veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh feels the upcoming Fih Hockey Pro League matches will be a perfect test for the team ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games.
"We are hopeful the Fih Hockey Pro League matches are held as per schedule this year, that way we get good matches against strong teams ahead of Tokyo Olympics in July. These matches will be a perfect test for us as players as well as a team and I am sure the final team selection for the Olympics will depend on how well we do in these matches," said Sreejesh.
On January 18 last year, the Indian team had made a sensational debut at the Fih Hockey Pro League with a 5-2 win against the Netherlands. Though in the next game, the Dutch bounced back to hold India 3-3 in regulation time, Sreejesh's heroics in the shootout ensured India began the coveted League with back-to-back wins.
