From writer/director Rob Brown comes a new drama-thriller titled "Sixteen," which tells the story of a young man named Jumah, a former child soldier from the Drc (Democratic Republic of the Congo), living in London, with his 16th birthday on the horizon, who is put into a situation during which he'll have to confront his past life, which will allow him to finally move forward with his new one. The film makes its USA premiere at the New Voices in Black Cinema Festival, in Brooklyn, NYC, tonight, at 7:15pm, at BAMcinématek. ★★★★☆ Rob Brown's Sixteen (2013) is a beautifully realised debut that breathes new life into British cinema's obsession with urban thrillers, fashioning a refreshingly gentle tale of redemption in a city frequently painted as the last refuge of the lost and the destitute. Tribal drums punctuate the film's inner-city veneer like an echo of Jumah's (Roger Jean Nsengiyumva) violent past. A former child soldier from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jumah is utterly determined to put aside his traumatic history and make something of himself. However, when Jumah witnesses a murder he finds himself under the watchful eye of the community's self-appointed governor.

Jumah is about to turn 16 in two days and wants to leave his violent past behind him. Things seem to have taken a turn for the better with Jumah now; he has a sweet but tentative romance blossoming with Chloe (played by Rosie Day) at school. Matthew Shipp: Piano Sutras (Thirsty Ear)
Every Matthew Shipp album is a major event. Not in the sense of a Lady Gaga album, accompanied by a relentless publicity campaign and hyped as a cultural upheaval of massive commercial significance. No, a Matthew Shipp album is a major event for jazz because he is one of the most important pianists alive, and also because he hardly ever rests on his laurels, comfortable in a circumscribed style -- he evolves from one album to the next in a nearly disconcerting way. Even though his playing is immediately recognizable -- one would never confuse him with any of the other pianists on the scene -- it shifts slightly from album to album.
This is not merely a matter of setting (solo, trio, duo) or collaborators, though of course who he works with does affect how he plays. Even if one just looks at...

A former child soldier from the Congo trying to fit into the English way of life promises an intriguing storyline and adaptation to the usual, tired, gritty, inner-city drama set on a London sink estate. Debut feature-filmmaker Rob Brown, whose background is award-winning short filmmaking, has all the possibilities at his finger tips but fails to make anything significant or groundbreaking to the usual depressing affair. Thin characterisation and some wooden acting mar the potential, even though you cannot help but want the best for lead character Jumah, played by Roger Nsengiyumva of Africa United fame.
Sixteen-year-old Jumah (Nsengiyumva), who is African born and has witness some brutal atrocities in his homeland, is brought to inner-city London by his adoptive mother Laura (Rachael Stirling), a nurse, to live a safer existence and prosper from the educational opportunities. However, after witnessing a local murder on the estate, Jumah’s child...

Batman Rises: The Dark Knight Rises trailer 3, Anne Hathaway The Dark Knight Rises trailer 3 is out. The search for the Tdkr trailer 3 has been as frantic as — if not more so than — Batman’s search for Bane or Bane’s search for Batman. I’m not sure exactly who’ll be searching for whom, but I do hope Bane’s dialogue will be more intelligible once the movie is released. Still having trouble understanding him, though I did get "Your punishment must be more severe!" (Please scroll down for the Tdkr trailer.) Now, the best lines — and classiest look — in the Tdkr trailer 3 belong to Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman, e.g., "There’s a storm coming…" and "You should be as afraid of him as I am" and "You don’t owe these people anymore! You’ve given them everything." Something tells me The Dark Knight Rises will belong to...

Whether the forthcoming The Dark Knight Rises will deliver a box office knockout the way it’s predecessor did in 2008 is hard to predict, in this, a summer of some truly outstanding blockbusters. But one thing is certain: it will be a tough contender.
And speaking of tough, there’s the movie’s chief henchman, Bane, as played by Tom Hardy. In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the character is seen taking hostages in what appears to be Gotham’s equivalent of the New York Stock Exchange. You can check out the new images, courtesy of EW (via Batman-News.com), below.

Tom Hardy, The Dark Knight Rises The Dark Knight Rises has been rated PG-13 "for intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language," according to various online reports. Now, that Christopher Nolan's upcoming Batman movie will get a PG-13 rating is totally expected, but at this point in time the only PG-13-rated The Dark Knight Rises listed on the Motion Picture Association of America's website is The Dark Knight Rises' Prologue. That's it. The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20. A few weeks ago, Nolan reportedly screened a rough cut of the film to Warner Bros. executives. No word on whether or not the film is actually ready to be rated. The purported source for this news is a "Warner Bros. exhibitor's" site. So, either the MPAA will release an official rating to The Dark Knight Rises on Monday, or … this is another "Gary Ross is...

While there are still not enough good roles for women out there, particularly in mainstream Hollywood, that hasn't stopped a batch of young female stars from exploding from out of nowhere in recent years. Head-turning performances have helped launch faces like Carey Mulligan, Mia Wasikowska, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Felicity Jones and many others into the stratosphere, and the success last weekend of "The Hunger Games" has hopefully put to rest the fallacy that huge audiences won't turn up to big movies carried by a woman.
With that in mind, and hot on the heels of our ten picks for actors on the rise yesterday, we've chosen ten actresses who, while yet to be household names, have wowed audiences and casting directors in recent years, and look like strong contenders to headline the big movies of the future. Check our picks our below, and weigh in with your own tips in the comment section.

The Dark Knight Rises fan-made poster You know a movie is hot when talented people spend their time creating unofficial posters and/or trailers for them. On YouTube, you'll find countless fan-made Twilight trailers, for instance. And above you get an explosive (quite literally) The Dark Knight Rises poster, initially found at Shockya. The most notable difference between this poster by DevianArt's visuasys and the Dark Knight Rises materials released thus far is the color scheme: whereas the poster has lots of yellow, orange, and red, official Tdkr images and videos have emphasized blue and gray tints. Last week, Christopher Nolan reportedly screened a rough cut of the film, the last installment in his Batman trilogy, to the suits at Warner Bros. The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20. Directed by Nolan, from his own screenplay with brother Jonathan Nolan, The Dark Knight Rises stars Batman Begins / The Dark Knight's Christian Bale,...

Tom Hardy as Bane, Christian Bale as Batman, The Dark Knight Rises Christopher Nolan has shown a rough cut of The Dark Knight Rises to top Warner Bros. executives. The epoch-making event took place on Friday, say The Hollywood Reporter's "sources." Among those present at the screening were film chief Jeff Robinov and production president Greg Silverman. Obviously, this exclusive "premiere" was held so Nolan can hear suggestions from his bosses. The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, and it'd better be in perfect form by then. After all, the final installment in Nolan's Batman trilogy is expected to be 2012's biggest box-office grosser, quite possibly — due to its wider appeal — surpassing strong competitor The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, the final installment in the Twilight series featuring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. The Dark Knight Rises' predecessor, The Dark Knight, took in slightly more than $1 billion worldwide...

Christopher Nolan, whose The Dark Knight Rises opens this summer, left talent agency CAA after his agent, Dan Aloni, was fired. According to TheWrap, following Aloni's dismissal yesterday, he was escorted out of the CAA building. TheWrap reports that a(n unnamed) former colleague "said that Aloni had a 'bullying' style that won him enemies among fellow agents, even if it was effective for his clients." Among Aloni's other clients are Mars Needs Moms' Robert Zemeckis, Meet the Fockers' Jay Roach, Wedding Crashers' David Dobkin, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind's Michel Gondry and Jim Carrey. The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20. Nolan's latest (and apparently last) Batman movie features Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Conti, Matthew Modine, Juno Temple, Josh Pence, Daniel Sunjata, Nestor Carbonell, Joey King, Brett Cullen, Chris Ellis, Josh Stewart, Christopher Judge,...

Ra’s al Ghul, the legendary Batman villain, made his first appearance on the big screen in Chris Nolan’s Batman Begins. There have been rumors swirling that he character, played by Liam Neeson, would be returning to Chris Nolan’s third Batman movie, and in an interview with Showbizspy, the actor commented on his possible return.
“I can tell you nothing about Dark Knight Rises, seriously,” Neeson told ShowbizSpy. “I was on set for maybe an hour-and-a-half and the director didn’t tell me anything of what it’s about. So, I’m being very honest when I say I have no idea what’s going to happen.”
So there you have it, Liam Neeson was on set, he filmed something, and he has no idea what is going to happen. There is the chance that the footage they filmed may not even appear in the film. But we...

Just as there was no ‘Batmobile’ but instead a ‘Tumbler’ in the previous films, the flying hovercraft vehicle we see at the end of the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises ain’t gonna be called the ‘Batwing’.
According to an FCC filing from an upcoming Hot Wheels toy (and backed up by Batman-news.com) the flying vehicle is named ‘The Bat’.
Of course we don’t know if the vehicle’s actual name will appear in the film or just in toys/marketing but it probably will.
What do you make of the new name and do you prefer that director Christopher Nolan has gone against calling everything the ‘Batwing’ and ‘Batmobile’ in favour of less cheesy sounding titles? Though having said that, I’m pretty sure the ‘Batbike’ was simply changed to the ‘Batpod’ which sounds just as 60′s camp!

Just how many new images from The Dark Knight Rises film are in Entertainment Weekly’s latest issue?
Two more images from the mag have hit the web this afternoon to go along with the new cover image and the three new images posted earlier.
The first is an image of Batman at night with some kind of blue tinged spotlight beaming down on him as he looks up into the skies of Gotham;
The second features Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne in front of the Batman suit in a shot very similar to one publicity still from The Dark Knight that did the rounds pre-release. Could this be our first look inside the new Batcave or is the suit housed somewhere else?
In the issue director Christopher Nolan confirms the Batcave and indeed Wayne Manor both make a return in the new film. Nolan also addresses in the issue...

You didn't think Entertainment Weekly [1] would run a cover story on The Dark Knight Returns and not feature some other new photos inside, did you? Last night we showed you the cover image [2] from the new EW, which features the best look yet at Christian Bale in the new Batman suit. Here are three more images, of Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane and Bale as Batman. Update: Two more images showed up, so they've been adeed to the gallery below. [gallery columns="2" orderby="title"] We've already covered the big quotes from Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale that came out of the issue -- notably that Nolan says in the context of the film Bane's voice will make a lot more sense: I think when people see the film, things will come into focus. Bane is very complex and very interesting and when people see the finished film people will be very entertained by him.
