Nikki Amuka-Bird gives a powerful performance as a gritty deputy defending her remote sheriff’s office from armed invaders
There’s an old-timey charm about this, a (mostly) one-location action movie in the tradition of Rio Bravo, or its sort-of remake Assault on Precinct 13. Partly it’s because of the remote mountainous setting in an unnamed state, the log cabin sheriff’s office, the trucks, twangy accents and mentions of second amendment nuts; and partly because of the core device of having a heroic figure – in this case, Deputy Tabby Temple (Nikki Amuka-Bird) – defending the fort against armed invaders. But the joke’s on us because nearly the whole thing was shot in Kosovo and most of the cast is British, as is writer-director Will Gilbey, who is making his feature directorial debut after a long apprenticeship as an editor, writer and second-unit dogsbody on the distinctly estuary-accented Rise of the Footsoldier...

The 31st edition of London’s Raindance Film Festival will open with the U.K. premiere of British actor Jack Huston’s directorial debut “Day of the Fight.”
The film comes to Raindance fresh off its Venice debut, where Huston was honored by Variety as a breakthrough director.
The story of a once-renowned boxer who takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he left prison stars Michael Pitt alongside a cast including Ron Perlman, Joe Pesci, and a cameo from Steve Buscemi.
The U.K. premiere of Isabel Coixet’s “Un Amor” will close the festival after it bows at San Sebastian. Based on Sara Mesa’s bestselling novel, Laia Costa plays a young woman who escapes her stressful life in the city and relocates to rural Spain. When she accepts a disturbing sexual proposal, it gives rise to an all-consuming and obsessive passion.

The ‘Coming Soon to TV’ shelf in your local bookshop will be sagging under the weight of this lot – the thrillers, sci-fi stories, crime novels and non-fiction currently being adapted for television. If you prefer to read ahead before your imagination is sullied by the small screen version, then here’s where to start, from Apple TV+’s adaptation of 1950s-set revenge comedy Lessons in Chemistry and psychological thriller The Crowded Room, to Prime Video’s new Neil Gaiman show Anansi Boys and rumoured Kay Scarpetta series, via Netflix’s true-life opioid drama Painkiller, Itvx/MGM+ historical adventure series The Winter King and many more. Many many more.

Visit Heptonstall graveyard in West Yorkshire and you can expect to see four things: Happy Valley fans, tourists, pens and coins. The former are there to visit the fictional gravesite of Catherine Cawood’s daughter Becky from the BBC thriller, while the tourists are in the habit of leaving the latter – pens on the grave of American poet Sylvia Plath, and coins on the grave of legendary local figure “King” David Hartley.
“There’s never usually more than 20p on David Hartley’s grave,” says Jennifer Reid, a ballad historian who plays pub landlady Barb in a new BBC drama about the famed Yorkshireman. “But when I visited during filming I knew people from London had been up, because there was about £4.50 on there!”

First cast by Shane Meadows, in This is England, Socha is about to star in the director’s period drama The Gallows Pole. He describes how acting saved him from a life of violence – and why he loves a madcap scheme
In a photographer’s studio in Derby, Michael Socha is wondering what he should wear. He’s got a good jumper on, but he doesn’t like his jeans. He’s brought a couple of shirts from his mum’s, but they need a bit of an iron. No stylist for Socha; he has the busy air of a man who’s popped in between shifts, which he has, sort of. He lives close by, and is always on the go, “here, there and everywhere”. Aside from acting, and family, he practises muay thai and kickboxing. Netflix users have reacted to the streamer’s recent addition, a “heartbreaking” child abuse drama titled Big Boys Don’t Cry.
The British drama was released in 2020 but was only recently added to Netflix, on 23 December.
Big Boys Don’t Cry partly fictionalises the real life story of Paul Connolly, who was abandoned in a dustbin as a two-week-old baby and later abused at the infamous St Leonard’s children’s home in Essex, where children were routinely subjected to physical and sexual abuse.
This Is England star Michael Socha plays Connolly as an adult, with newcomer Mitchell Norman playing the younger version of the character.

Based on true events, the lasting impact of trauma suffered at a children’s home are examined in this painful British crime drama
This painful British drama part-fictionalises the life of Paul Connolly, abandoned in a dustbin as a two-week-old baby and then later abused at the notorious St Leonard’s children’s home in Essex. The effects of childhood brutality and the cost of growing up being told you’re nothing: it’s all there in This Is England actor Michael Socha’s performance as Connolly in adulthood, a violent man carrying invisible scars.
We first meet Connolly as a child of about 11 or 12 (played by newcomer Mitchell Norman). “You’ll end up in prison,” screams one of his carers. First look images have been unveiled of Nikki Amuka-Bird in upcoming survival thriller “Jericho Ridge.”
The film tells the story of North Washington county sheriff Tabby (Amuka-Bird), who finds herself alone in the sheriff’s office one night while her colleagues are out on patrol. But she soon finds out they’ve been set up by a murderous drug cartel while she herself comes under siege at the office, where she must battle desperately to save herself and her son.
Amuka-Bird is best-known for “Jupiter Ascending” and “Old.” She recently wrapped on an adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion” alongside Dakota Johnson.
In first stills from “Jericho Ridge,” which has been shooting in Kosovo (subbing for North Washington), Amuka-Bird can be seen in her deputy sheriff’s uniform pointing a gun (above) while “This is England” star Michael Socha, who plays redneck crook Earl Macready, can be seen in another...

Nikki Amuka-Bird (“The Outfit”) will play the lead in Will Gilbey’s “Jericho Ridge.”
BAFTA award-winner Gilbey (“A Lonely Place to Die”) also wrote the screenplay for the feature, which is billed as a survival thriller.
Amuka-Bird is joined by Michael Socha (“This is England”), Zack Morris (“The Fades”), Chris Reilly (“Wrath of Man”) Philipp Christopher (“Origin”), Solly McLeod (“Boxing Day”) and music artist Capital T.

I wanted to pull the curtain back just a little bit for a second and bring you something a little different. As you may know Nerdly, the website, and our fledgling – but growing – YouTube channel are proudly latched on to the Romford Film Festival, this was a relationship that came about organically through knowing filmmakers that had shown movies at the fest and being introduced to Spencer Hawken (the creator and chief) and really just digging the vibe. I would like to say I was invited to the jury and selection panel but honestly I just kinda said “Give me all the links… I’m in”. You could say I invited myself!
I have loved working on the panels and having discussions about what we should and shouldn’t show, what should be nominated and what should win. However, I and my esteemed judges don’t always agree and sometimes...

Georgian writer-director-producer Giga Agladze has been a musician, a documentarian and Caucasus regional director of the Transcendental Meditation-focused David Lynch Foundation. Yet none of those things has any obvious bearing on, or makes much sense of, his debut directorial feature—apart from Lynch being on board as a prominently billed executive producer.
Shot in 2019 Tbilisi with a largely British cast, “The Other Me” has Jim Sturgess as a man whose sudden-onset blindness is sometimes literal, sometimes metaphorical, sometimes both. That’s symptomatic of . Its cast struggling against material with little real-world or emotional logic, the attempted “surreal” elements uninspired both conceptually and aesthetically, this is a misfire whose intentions are as murky as its results are hapless. Gravitas Ventures is opening on 10 or more U.S. screens on Feb. 4, simultaneous with release to digital platforms.

“The Suicide Squad” star Idris Elba has boarded Uzo Oleh’s short thriller “Edicius” as an executive producer, Variety can exclusively reveal.
The film stars “Chernobyl” actor Michael Socha as Jason, a man who works on behalf of a powerful gang. “When Jason uncovers the truth behind his most powerful client, he realises his life is on the line” reads the synopsis. “But a visit from his intuition, a man with his exact likeness, claims to have the answers to save him. All Jason has to do is trust him…but can he?”
Adele “Adesuwa” Oni (“Hanna and The Witcher”), Stuart Bowman (“Bodyguard”) and newcomer Sahera Khan also star.
Oleh, a photographer and director, has previously worked with some of the biggest names in entertainment including Elba, Cara Delevingne and Lady Gaga. His photography has appeared in Vogue and I-d Magazine as well as exhibitions worldwide. He has also directed a number of commercials.

Once upon an ABC schedule, Adam Horowitz and Edward Ktisis wrote a little show about fairy tales. Once Upon A Time spanned seven seasons, and at least three of them were really good!
While that last good season, Once Upon A Time Season 3 was airing, Horowitz and Kitsis made another show set in the Onceverse: Once Upon A Time in Wonderland.
Once Upon A Time in Wonderland only lasted one season, but for thirteen glorious episodes, it was one of the best things on TV. Being so short, it never made it to DVD, and it hasn't been on a streaming service in eons. Now, finally, it's coming to Disney+ this month!
As a die-hard fan of Wonderland, imagine my surprise when this news was met with equal surprise. Why you ask? Because a lot of fans of Once Upon A Time never even knew there was a spinoff.
I was shocked,...

“Hitman” is probably the most disproportionately over-represented profession in movies, at least over the medium’s last half-century. “Killers Anonymous” is one of those occasional films that attempt novelty by having a character cast of nothing but hitmen — which isn’t really all that much of a novelty, for the above-noted reason.
This latest entry in the cluttered annals of vaguely Tarantino-esque neo-noir criminal capers doesn’t take itself particularly seriously. But it doesn’t strike an assertively comic tone either, resulting in a superficially colorful but hollow pile of contrivances that are neither clever nor convincing enough to achieve more than time-passing diversion. Lionsgate is opening Martin Owen’s third feature, a U.S.-U.K. co-production, on 13 U.S. screens simultaneous with on-demand launch.

"We're all here because we're not all there." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for a VOD film titled Killers Anonymous, an action thriller about a support group for killers. Yep, this is a play on "Alcoholics Anonymous" but for killers, and it's as dumb of a concept as it sounds written out here. Remarkably, the cast for this film is lead by some major names: Oscar winner Gary Oldman, along with Jessica Alba, Suki Waterhouse, Tommy Flanagan, MyAnna Buring, Michael Socha, Tim McInnerny, Sadie Frost, Rhyon Nicole Brown, and Sam Hazeldine. As expected, this group gets into trouble. "When new truths are discovered, secret alliances and betrayals emerge as the session explodes into violence and chaos." This looks like a disaster, which isn't any surprise, but still I don't get how these films keep getting made. Enjoy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Martin Owen's Killers Anonymous,...

Chicago – The remarkable true-ish story of “Papillon” is difficult to mess up. Henrí Charriére published the “autobiographical novel” in 1969, and the first film version dropped in 1973, with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman as the two leads no less. The latest film has Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek in those leads, as two French prisoners constantly trying to escape.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The film does suffer from comparison to the first version (directed by veteran Franklin J. Schaffner), but it is still a well-done unfolding of a audacious prison “adventure.” The French word for butterfly, “Papillon,” is the nickname of Charriére, a prisoner in the French Guiana (Devil’s Island) system from 1931 to 1945. He spent his whole time there trying to escape, in broader and more interesting schemes. The movie exploits that aspect of the story, and created some nice scenarios in letting them play out. Hunnam and Malek (“Mr. Robot”) won’t...

Gary Oldman and Jessica Alba have joined a new film project called Killer Anonymous, which is said to have the potential of being a cult classic. The movie is being directed by Martin Owen (Let’s Be Evil) and this is the intriguing description of the film that Variety offered:
The film enters a world that exists beneath ours, beneath the day-to-day, the restraint and the order. For every life there is a death, and for every person there is an itch that only the few scratch; the dark voice that tells us to blow out the flame of another’s life. You might walk down a street and brush shoulders with a stranger and exchange a polite smile, completely unaware that stranger is picturing themselves stood above your bleeding body as you draw your final breath. There is a place for those people. They have all killed, they all think about killing,...

Gary Oldman and Jessica Alba are set to star in Goldfinch Studios’ Martin Owen-directed thriller Killers Anonymous.
The Darkest Hour actor and Sin City star are fronting the feature, which has just started filming in London. The studio said it marks Oldman’s first role since winning an Oscar as Winston Churchill in Joe Wright’s drama.
Killers Anonymous explores a world that exists beneath the day to day, the restraint and order. For every life there is a death, and for every person there is an itch that only the few scratch; the dark voice that tells people to blow out the flame of another’s life. You might walk down a street and brush shoulders with a stranger and exchange a polite smile, completely unaware that stranger is picturing themselves stood above your bleeding body as you draw your final breath. There is a place for those people.

"A great escape. An incredible true story." Bleecker Street Media has unveiled an official Us trailer for the film Papillon, a remake of the 1973 film Papillon starring Steve McQueen as Henri "Papillon" Charrière. Both films tell the same story of a French safecracker from the Parisian underworld who is framed for murder and condemned to life in the notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island. This film seems to tell his entire life story of how he got there and how he escapes, while the original 1973 film focuses mostly on his time on the island and eventual escape with another prisoner. The cast of this Papillon film includes Rami Malek, Eve Hewson, Roland Møller, Michael Socha, Christopher Fairbank, Brian Vernel, and Ian Beattie. This looks like a thrilling, harrowing prison film that tells a very impressive life story - but I don't think it will top the original. Not too...

An evident labour of love for first-time writer-director Dan Cadan, this cheerful British comedy attempts to fuse a nostalgic love of Saturday teatime TV wrestling with a band-of-plucky-underdogs plot that’s straight out of The Full Monty. The result leaves a lot to be desired, but there’s no denying that the film’s heart is in the right place.
The film begins with a wistful flashback to the 1980s, when the nation was glued to British wrestling on ITV’s World of Sport, every Saturday tea-time and young Mark Bolton (Stephen Graham) grew up idolising his wrestler father, Trevor “Bulldog” Bolton (I, Daniel Blake’s Dave Johns) and his wrestling troupe, The Panthers. Cut to the present day, where Mark still harbours...
