The £450M ($568M) UK film and TV studio backed by James Corden’s Fulwell 73 has been given the go-ahead.
Having submitted plans last year, a city council in the North East of England has greenlit plans for the Sunderland studio, which its backers say will create 8,000 jobs and cover 1.6 million sq ft. When complete, it is expected that the studios will generate £336m for the local economy every year.
Crown Works Studios is a Jv between Late Late Show maker Fulwell 73 and investment firm Cain International. It has backing from Sunderland City Council and a package of support amounting to around £120M.
Crown Works will be one of the largest in Europe, according to its backers, with 20 premium sound stages suitable for major feature film and high-end TV shows.

I am Leo Pearlman, born in Sunderland, living in London. I am a partner at production company Fulwell 73, where we make content including “Carpool Karaoke” and “Cinderella.” I am a husband, a father, a son and a brother. But I know that even today in some parts of the world there are those who would define me simply as: Jew.
In 1936, my great-grandfather Leo, whose name I am proud to carry, managed to escape from Germany with eight members of his immediate family, including my then 6-year-old grandmother. Of the 32 who stayed, most died in Auschwitz. None survived. My grandmother spent the next 75 years of her life repeating the mantra “Never Again.”

UK TV Diversity Chief Defends Social Media Activity After “Antisemitism” Row Over Stephen Fry Speech
Exclusive: The chief executive of one of the UK’s top diversity bodies has denied ‘liking’ allegedly antisemitic LinkedIn posts about Stephen Fry’s Christmas speech.
Deborah Williams, who runs the Creative Diversity Network, said she did not endorse messages posted over the festive period by former Channel 4 commissioner Tamara Abood.
Williams’ denial comes amid other questions about her social media activity, including re-posting a petition, shared by controversial politician Chris Williamson, calling on Israel’s ambassador to the UK to be expelled.
Abood was accused of antisemitism by high-profile Jewish producers after she wrote that Fry’s rallying cry against rising discrimination was “disingenuous” and demonstrated “where the power lies” in UK media. Fry’s six-minute speech was produced by Fulwell 73 for Channel 4.

Prominent Jewish TV executives in the UK have expressed their horror at a social media post by a former Channel 4 commissioner, who attacked a Stephen Fry rallying call against antisemitism.
Tamara Abood, an ex-Channel 4 current affairs commissioner and producer of shows including What Happens In Kavos, sparked anger after posting on LinkedIn about Fry’s alternative Christmas Day message.
Industry executives were also dismayed that one of Abood’s posts was ‘liked’ by Deborah Williams, chief executive of the Creative Diversity Network, British TV’s inclusion watchdog.
Fry used his speech on Channel 4 to express concern about rising antisemitism in the UK and implored viewers to stand up against discrimination. The six-minute speech was produced by Fulwell 73.
Abood, who now works as a psychotherapist but maintains links to the TV industry, wrote that the speech was “disingenuous” in a series of LinkedIn messages.
She added: “C4 is broadcasting a Christmas message about anti-semitism.

Stephen Fry is set to deliver a deeply person Alternative Christmas Message for U.K. broadcaster Channel 4, in which he will address the rising tide of antisemitism across the world.
Calling for solidarity, Fry, who is an atheist and a humanist, urges the audience to call out antisemitism as they would any other form of racism: “Standing upright means speaking up and calling out venomous slurs and hateful abuse wherever you encounter them.”
“There is real fear stalking the Jewish neighbourhoods of Britain,” he continues. “Jewish people here are becoming fearful of showing themselves. In Britain, in 2023. Can you imagine, Jews afraid to be themselves in the open for fear of reprisal?”
Fry opens the message, which will air shortly after King Charles III’s annual Christmas speech on the BBC, by publicly proclaiming his own Jewishness, a fact he says many people don’t realize. “Indeed sometimes people...

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has confirmed that the construction of a major film studio in the UK’s north east is under discussion, with mention of Barbie thrown in.
The UK’s north east could eventually become the home of a major film studio complex, with plans underway to construct multiple sound stages on a disused industrial site in Sunderland.
Over the weekend, the Sunderland Echo reports, the chancellor Jeremy Hunt confirmed that the government is currently discussing the project with its investors.
“We have been having very good discussions with the people who are hoping to invest here,” Hunt said during a visit to Nissan’s car plant, also located in Sunderland. “All I will say is, this year’s California blockbuster Barbie was shot in Hertfordshire – next time, let’s have a Sunderland Barbie.”
Hunt is referring here to Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, where much of this year’s doll-based hit was filmed.

At just 41, Ben Winston — the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast — is one of the top TV producers in show business. UK TV presenters Ant and Dec are remaking Byker Grove, the show that made child stars of them three decades ago.
Late Late Show indie Fulwell 73 is developing the project with the I’m a Celebrity host’s Mitre Studios.
Originally broadcast between 1989 and 2006 on the BBC, Byker Grove became a household favorite as it told the story of a youth club in Newcastle. Celebrated for its handling of hard hitting and controversial storylines, the program ran for 18 series and launched many famous faces both in front of and behind the camera, including Ant and Dec as fun-loving duo Pj and Duncan. The pair have often credited the show with launching their careers.
The producers said the reboot, which isn’t attached to a broadcaster, is aimed at a primetime audience and will “engage with a new generation of teenagers navigating the different challenges faced by young adults today.”

Rodrigo Santoro – Hector in “Westworld,” Xerxes in “300”– leans forward in his chair during a Zoom interview almost touching the screen, such is his excitement. “It’s absolutely extraordinary, the accomplishment. What they did, what this man did. The mission seemed completely impossible.”
Santoro is talking about Ferdinand Magellan, whom he plays in Prime Video’s “Boundless,” directed by Simon West, also starring Alvaro Morte, the Professor in “Money Heist,” and Zdf Studios and Rtve’s banner title at this year’s Mipcom.
West calls the series his “passion project.” For anybody interested in the Age of Discovery, Magellan’s circumnavigation of the world, completed by Basque Juan Sebastián Elcano, is the voyage of voyages, the greatest feat in maritime history, writes historian Laurence Bergreen.
“Boundless” (“Sin limites”) is first and foremost, West insists, entertainment, here epic unflagging, historic adventure for the whole family. Rejected by Portugal’s Manuel 1, Magellan...

Ben Winston never planned on entering an eighth year at his CBS Television City office, a bright room now stuffed with memorabilia from an ascendant Hollywood tenure that’s brought him 11 Emmys. The Brit, 40, arrived in 2015 with every intention of returning to London upon fulfilling his nine-month contract to help launch a late night talk show with longtime pal and fellow British import James Corden. He just kept sticking around. Now, as Corden preps a 2023 exit from The Late Late Show — and, likely, L.A. — his frequent producing partner is staying put. “I thought I was coming for a few months, and now I have two American children,” Winston says over Zoom in early June. “[My wife] Meredith loves it here, and so do the kids. I’m in real trouble.”
