For those of us who weren’t lucky enough to attend a Beatles concert in the 1960s, Ron Howard’s Eight Days a Week just might be the next best thing. The 2016 documentary traces the band’s rise from a cramped and dank cellar in Liverpool to record breaking television appearances, jam packed stadiums, and—ultimately—rock immortality. Lovingly assembled through rare and often unseen fan home movie footage, Howard’s film also draws on more familiar material—restored to the highest echelons of HD— and new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. All told, it’s a joyous...

The kaleidoscopic baroque-and-roll masterwork that elevated The Beatles from pop stars to multimedia conceptual artists, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band celebrates its 50th anniversary in June. Arriving in U.K. cinemas later this month to coincide with a feast of deluxe album repackages, Alan G. Parker's cumbersomely titled documentary It Was Fifty Years Ago Today! The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper and Beyond frames the Fab Four's psychedelic 1967 game-changer within a turbulent 18-month period when they stopped playing live, flirted with Eastern religion, popularized LSD, suffered the tragic loss of manager Brian Epstein and launched their avant garde arts organization Apple.

Vivek Tiwary has been my friend for more than 15 years. We met through mutual friends, and bonded initially over rock’n’roll and cancer. Immediately, I thought he was one of the coolest people I’d ever met. These are some of the things Vivek has done: Broadway producer (of A Raisin in the Sun, American Idiot, among others), a tech entrepreneur who used his music industry chops to help talent deal with the business, and co-founder of an amazing non-profit that, among other things, helped soothe my husband as he was dying.
You can imagine my surprise when I found out that he is also a huge comic book nerd.
We don’t have quite the same roots – he’s a Marvel fan, I’m a DC girl – but we bonded over our love of the form. In fact, when he was having trouble finding a way to get...

The music industry hasn’t traditionally earned much fame for its behind-the-scenes players—perhaps because the rock stars actually making the music are particularly difficult to outshine. Sure, the music biz has its share of names that don’t actually play instruments or produce records, but how many immediately spring to mind? Beatles manager Brian Epstein, maybe. Colonel Tom Parker. Interscope impresario Jimmy Iovine. But even those titans of the industry aren’t household names, or even close. Danny Fields, the subject of Danny Says—and of the Ramones song that gives the documentary its name—is several steps below those players on the fame ladder, though Brendan Toller’s film posits that he’s no less vital to the history of popular music.
To hear Fields tell it—and a lot of Danny Says features the man himself telling his own stories—he had great taste in forward-thinking music...

If you’re a fan of The Beatles there’s a new documentary coming out from director Ron Howard called The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years. The doc includes some rare never-before-seen footage of the iconic band as they toured the world to play their music. It covers the years from 1962 to 1966, which were some of the craziest years for the band as they rose to stardom. It also features interviews with those who lived through it. It's really cool to see some of this footage of The Beatles that we’ve never seen before. I’m looking forward to learning more new things about these legendary musicians thanks to this doc.
The Touring Years is based on the first part of The Beatles’ career (1962-1966) – the period in which they toured and captured the world’s acclaim.

47 years ago today, on December 14, 1968, Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” hit No.1 on the U.S. singles chart. The soul classic held that top position for seven weeks. Written by Motown Records producer Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, the song was one of many that the label recorded with multiple acts. A year before the release of Gaye’s 1968 version, Gladys Knight & the Pips also charted with the song. The success of this 1968 recording of the song took Gaye’s career to another level, and it’s secured its place in music history — Rolling Stone placed the track high on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, at #81. In 1998, Gaye’s “Grapevine” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Other notable December 14 happenings in pop culture history: • 1963: The Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand” rose to #1 on the U.K. charts,...

13 years ago today, Eminem began what remains his longest stay atop the Billboard Hot 100 when “Lose Yourself” reached No. 1. The rap hit held onto the top spot for 12 weeks. Written during breaks on set while filming “8 Mile,” the song loosely follows the storyline of the leading character’s struggle to break from poverty and launch a rap career. Eminem created an intense and memorable sound for the song with a moody electric guitar riff and his trademark tinkling piano punctuating hip-hop beats. Its stay atop the chart began a day after the theatrical release of “8 Mile.” The track was the first rap song to ever win an Oscar for Best Original Song, beating fellow nominees U2 and Paul Simon. Nicholas Hoult has clearly developed a taste for the British music industry. Fresh off his role in Owen Harris’ dark and seedy drama Kill Your Friends, the actor is reportedly in contention to topline Brian Epstein biopic A Life In The Day.
Deadline has the scoop, revealing that Hoult is circling the in-development feature along with Jack O’Connell. Forty-eight years after his death, Brian Epstein is having a moment: The same week that Yoko Ono addressed rumors of a romantic relationship between Epstein and John Lennon, along comes news from Deadline that Nicholas Hoult is in talks to play the doomed Beatles manager opposite Jack O'Connell as Lennon in the upcoming biopic A Life in the Day. The project will likely not use any Beatles songs, as the rights to those have already been secured by a competing Epstein biopic, The Fifth Beatle. Considered "possibly the only honest manager in Britain at the time," Epstein was responsible for shaping the group from raucous Hamburg speed-freaks into a family-friendly mop-topped quartet; he was left adrift after the Beatles stopped touring, and died of a drug overdose in 1967. Rumors have swirled for years that the closeted Epstein had an affair with Lennon; for his part, Lennon told Playboy that, "We...

Tony Gittelson penned this look at the flamboyantly gay music agent who discovered and managed the Beatles and then died of a drug overdose at 32. Should it go ahead, Hoult would play Epstein opposite O'Connell as the troubled John Lennon.
Epstein and Lennon shared a relationship that has been much debated about how intimate it was. Even Lennon's widow Yoko Ono mused on it as almost a love affair that, though not consummated, was pretty intense.

No, fluid sexuality is not some new thing that Miley Cyrus came up with. And who better to queer our musical icons than conceptual artist and musician Yoko Ono? In an interview with the Daily Beast, the original Plastic talked about sexuality with her husband, John Lennon. “John and I had a big talk about it, saying, basically, all of us must be bisexual. And we were sort of in a situation of thinking that we’re not [bisexual] because of society. So we are hiding the other side of ourselves, which is less acceptable." It's heartening to see that this kind of enlightened pillow talk existed well before Orange Is the New Black (and probably even before that — the Greeks, hello?). At the top of her game in the UK, Cilla Black, who died today at the age of 72, was the highest-paid woman on television. During her 50-year career, Black, born Priscilla White, had 11 songs in the UK top 10, two consecutive number one hits (“Anyone Who Had a Heart” and “You’re My World,” both 1964) and 19 consecutive hits in the UK top 40. She was appointed to the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and honored with a special BAFTA last year for her lifelong dedication to the arts and entertainment.Black infamously worked as a hat-check girl in Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club and as a coffee server in the Zodiac, earning five shillings and a lunch comprising a bread roll and Heinz tomato soup “laced with the smell of disinfectant.” In 1963, John Lennon introduced her to producer Brian Epstein.
