Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek Pinault and Brendan Fraser have all been tapped to join the cast of Romain Gavras’ ‘Sacrifice’.
Said to be on the lines of a satire the story involves a plot with a high-end charity gala being raided by a violent group of radicals on a mystical quest to fulfil a prophecy. Also, expect a bit of Greek mythology mixed into the storyline.
Also in news – Kristen Stewart & Oscar Isaac set for Vampire thriller ‘Flesh of the Gods’
Taylor-Joy will take on the role of the passionate antagonist — and Evans will play the movie star she has tapped to die, along with the two others. Casting is still ongoing with more to be added.
Gavras has co-written the script alongside Will Arbery, Gavras will also take the helm on the project. Iconoclast and Robert Walak, the president of Iconoclast’s Film and TV division, will produce with Gavras.

Exclusive: Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek Pinault and Brendan Fraser will star in Sacrifice, a film co-written and to be directed by Romain Gavras. Like his last film Athena that premiered last Venice and was released on Netflix, Sacrifice has a similar combustible and propulsive anarchy coursing through the film.
This is closer to satire, but the script by Gavras and Will Arbery was strong enough to compel the leads to commit over the span of four days since the script was sent to talent. More actors will be set shortly, and I expect that the project — CAA Media Finance is selling the world with Rocket Science — won’t have a lot of territories left by the time buyers hit the Croisette. All the elements are there to launch Gavras as a major writer-director, here making his first English-language film.

Foe, a complicated love story set in the near future amid burned out farmland, intertwines AI and climate catastrophe with the challenges of keeping a marriage together — all elements director Garth Davis (Lion) said pulled him to the story.
“There are so many reasons why I was compelled to make this film, and why the actors were drawn to it. Within its layers lies something simple and urgent, something I reflect on in my daily life. The need to honor what is precious within us and around us, to align with our inner nature as we propel into an exciting and uncertain future,” he said as Foe had its world premiere Saturday night at the New York Film Festival.

Neon CEO Tom Quinn has addressed the debate around the new theatrical standards for Best Picture eligibility announced by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the summer.
Talking on a panel on box office strategies at the Zurich summit on Saturday (watch the panel above), the distributor and champion of the theatrical experience gave a surprising take on the new standards.
Under the new rules, which take effect for the 97th Academy Awards, theatrical release eligibility criteria for films put forward for Best Picture consideration will expand beyond the current one-week release in six U.S. qualifying cities.
As per Deadline’s report in June, the move was instigated by members of AMPAS’s Producers Branch, to bolster the org’s core mission of supporting films for the big screen and will impact streamers who have tended to enter films with the minimum release needed to qualify.

Oscar-nominated actor Paul Mescal’s hot streak continues this fall with “Foe,” a new sci-fi film in which he co-stars opposite Saoirse Ronan as one half of a somewhat unhappily married couple who gets the chance to leave his life behind and live in space.
Based on the book of the same name by author Iain Reid, “Foe” is set in the year 2065 and follows a pair of farmers who live on a secluded piece of land. When a stranger (played by Aaron Pierre) shows up on their doorstep with a startling proposal, their life – and marriage – is thrown into chaos. Mescal’s character is offered the chance to live among the stars, but his wife is not. Instead, he’ll leave behind a robot clone of himself to keep his wife company.
The plot is strikingly similar to the “Black Mirror” episode “Beyond the Sea.” Reid’s book was published back in 2018.

Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal embark on a journey to discover who is friend or foe in the trailer for Amazon Studios’ Foe, based on Iain Reid’s novel of the same name.
Ronan’s Hen and Mescal’s Junior are alone on their farm in 2065 when an uninvited stranger (Aaron Pierre) shows up at their door with the proposal of a lifetime for Junior: to pilot a space program and leave his wife behind to be looked over by an artificial version of him.
“I need to have an intimate understanding of your marriage, the good and the bad,” Pierre tells Mescal’s character. “I promise it’s confidential. It’s between you and me.”
The two-minute look at the film explores their lives and shows Hen’s desire for something greater than life on a desolate farm, while Junior wonders if he truly knows his wife.
“You wanna live mundane lives?...

Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan are a crumbling united front in dystopian thriller “Foe.”
The Oscar-nominated duo lead writer-director Garth Davis’ adaptation of Iain Reid’s novel of the same name. Reid, who co-wrote the screenplay with Davis, also penned “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” which Charlie Kaufman previously adapted to the big screen.
Mescal and Ronan portray a married couple living 40 years in the future where an environmental crisis has made their farmland almost uninhabitable. Mescal’s character is ordered to leave his home to help pilot a space program while his wife, played by Ronan, will be monitored.

Senior producers and distributors took to the stage at the Zurich Summit to debate the future of film distribution.
Amid the rise of the streamers, collapsing theatrical windows and the shuttering of cinemas during the pandemic, they stressed the need for flexibility when planning the best way to release movies.
Danny Perkins, the CEO and founder of Elysian Film Group, said: “There’s more change than ever. There is flux. There’s a need to be flexible within it. Because if something’s rigid, like a former theatrical window, it’s only going to break.”
Perkins added: “It’s very hard to see, but there’s definitely opportunity in distribution.”
The panel, which was hosted by CAA agent Maren Olson, also debated how independent financiers and distributors could compete with the resources and reach of the global streamers.

Of all the topics raised during this year’s Zurich Summit, the fact that talent now sometimes favor a streaming release over a theatrical one provoked the most debate.
“There are some actors who don’t want to go theatrical, even though it could succeed, they’d rather go on Netflix,” said Dan Steinman Co-President and COO at 30West, echoing a comment made earlier in the day by MGM’s Pamela Abdy and Michael de Luca.
“They’d rather not have the pressure of opening weekend, sometimes it is for bottom line reasons, other times psychological reasons. Some people want to play in this new sandbox [of streaming]. This is a new phenomenon but a strong one, we have to contend with it,” Steinman added.
Robert Walak, President of Anonymous Content Studios, shared a similar experience. “For me the most shocking thing filmmakers now say is they’d rather go to a...

Not every one of the 842 may choose to join the Academy, although based on recent years, the acceptance rate is in the high 90% range. Besides women accounting for 50% of the new invitees, the Academy...

There was wall-to-wall star power at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills on Friday, with Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Mahershala Ali, Viggo Mortensen, and actors ranging from Elsie Fisher (age 15) to Angela Lansbury (age 93), but Spike Lee stole the show at the AFI Awards.
In opening remarks, AFI president-ceo Bob Gazzale said everyone was a winner, so he wouldn’t single out any individual, but after praising the AFI Conservatory, he noted that Lee was wearing an NYU cap, prompting Lee to stand up and say, “I applied to AFI, but I didn’t get in!” which got the biggest laugh of the afternoon.
Before the start of the luncheon, there was 90 minutes of power-schmoozing, as Alfonso Cuaron hugged Donna Langley, Ted Sarandos chatted with Sam Elliott, the “Black Panther” team mingled with “This Is Us” reps, “Pose’s” Dominique Jackson spoke to Michael B. Jordan, and FX execs accepted...

At an elegant soirée on the terraces of the Hotel du Cap on Friday night, Lionsgate bid farewell to its Motion Picture Group co-chairman Patrick Wachsberger, even bagging chanteuse Jane Birkin to provide a melancholy musical send-off.
Industry executives and talent poured in to the particularly hot ticket to show their support for veteran exec Wachsberger who is exiting the company six years after it merged with Summit Entertainment, which he helped launch in 1993. But he promised he is not retiring, assuring attendees, “There is much I intend to do between Lionsgate and the Pearly Gates.”
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer introduced Wachsberger saying, “We have had a great time together. Patrick has not only contributed a tremendous amount to our company, as you all know, but a tremendous amount to the industry.”
Wachsberger thanked Joe Drake, his Motion Picture Group co-chair saying, “You’re gonna do great,” and thanked his...

Victor Loewy overcame a childhood of adversity to make a mark on the landscape of Canadian cinema and worldwide film distribution.
“I grew up in Romania, and my childhood was not normal in any traditional sense,” Loewy says.
Both his parents’ families died in the Holocaust. His father left the family when he was only a year old, and he lived with his mother and sister in communist Bucharest until age 18.
Then, in 1964, they were allowed to immigrate to Montreal. Loewy went on to graduate with a B.A. in German and economics from McGill U. in 1971, before jumping head-first into an industry of which he wasn’t exactly.
“I was most intrigued by the business side of filmmaking, the dealmaking world and distribution. Before that, I’d seen films strictly as entertainment, but I figured I could do something exciting within the world of cinema.”

Pathé to sell Italian-language Loro outside Italy.
Focus Features has acquired Italian rights to Paolo Sorrentino’s Loro (Them) starring Toni Servillo (pictured) as Silvio Berlusconi, the controversial and larger-than-life former prime minister, Mediaset founder and former AC Milan owner.
Universal Pictures Italy will distribute the feature and Indigo Films anticipates a summer start. Pathé is co-producing Loro and will handle sales outside Italy.
Sorrentino, who served on this year’s Cannes competition jury and whose English-language HBO show The Young Pope starring Jude Law is expected to be an Emmys contender, will direct Loro from a screenplay he co-wrote with Umberto Contarello.
It is understood the project will centre on Berlusconi and his entourage. Nicola Giuliano, Francesca Cima, and Carlotta Calori serve as producers.
Servillo starred in Sorrentino’s foreign-language Oscar winner The Great Beauty and Il Divo, in which he portrayed another Italian prime minister, Giulio Andreotti.
