The hotel employee checking me in was visibly excited. Leaning in to tell me something confidential, I half expected to hear Ryan Gosling was staying there.
“There’s an AI robot staying at the hotel,” she said. “It was just down here at the bar.”
“Does it have its own room?”
“I’m not sure if its–,” the woman paused. “Do you say owner? Handler? Friend?”
I hadn’t a clue, and still don’t. While breakthroughs in pre-trained large-language models are driving this artificial intelligence moment, one thing on display in Austin this week was the lack of words we possess to properly discuss it.
But discuss it we did at the SXSW Conferences, where AI was the topic dominating hundreds of panels, workshops, talks, and meet-up-sessions spread over 24 different tracks. The overwhelming message coming out the film track was AI is a tool — a powerful one, poised to upend the entertainment industry,...

Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst donned his turn-of-the-millennium apparel for the SXSW world premiere of “Y2K,” the Kyle Mooney-directed teen disaster comedy in which the rapper plays himself.
“Y2K” follows two high schoolers who crash a New Year’s Eve party on the last night of 1999 when they realize that the projected computer apocalypse is actually happening before their eyes. Claudette Godfrey, president of SXSW Film and TV, introduced the film by joking that it was an honest depiction of what happened that night.
Then, in a post-screening Q&a when Godfrey asked Durst how he celebrated Y2K, he committed to the bit. “Dude, are you trolling me?” he asked. “This is the A24 24th year celebration of surviving Y2K. What the fuck is going on here? We’re all survivors, right?”

The world premiere of “Tetris” gave the crowd at South by Southwest a whole new look at Taron Egerton.
From his first appearance on screen, the Austin audience couldn’t keep quiet, cheering and applauding for his impassioned speeches, dad jokes and 1970s porn-stache.

After a simple deal at a Las Vegas electronics convention goes wrong, Rogers finds himself embroiled in overlapping conflicts between every gaming company worth its salt, an English billionaire and the Soviet Union itself, with his life threatened multiple times along the way.
The story behind “Tetris” is true — in part, anyway. The real Henk Rogers appeared for a post-screening a Q&a alongside Alexey Pajitnov, the Russian designer behind the game, played by Nikita Yefremov in the film. If SXSW was excited to see Egerton,...

This year’s closing-night film will be announced closer to the event. In addition, there is another movie to be announced for the fest’s Monday, March 13 slot. Given the Oscars on March 12 (note the festival sets their dates five years in advance), I understand that evening’s lineup will ease a bit with amped-up...

South by Southwest is back for another year of the rootin’-est, tootin’-est, most queso-heavy film festival on the planet, as it invades Austin, Texas, alongside the music component of the festival.
The entire experience is now called the South by Southwest Conference and Festivals and takes place in Austin from March 10-18. If you’ve never been, it is an absolute blast, like Sundance but with better weather, better food and nicer people (though without the skiing and snowboarding). And this year’s line-up is no different, featuring splashy Hollywood premieres, hotly tipped indies and a ton of stuff you’ve never, ever heard of.
The entire thing kicks off with a bang – the premiere of Paramount’s hotly anticipated “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” directed and co-written by the “Game Night” team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

Everyone has their own personal moment when the reality of the Covid-19 pandemic finally hit home. Maybe it was the halt to the NBA season. Or a personal encounter with sickness. For the entertainment business, nothing brought the gravity of the situation into such stark relief as seeing the city of Austin cancel the 2020 SXSW festival less than a week before it was scheduled to kick off.
For years, as the festival grew from a cool place to see up-and-coming bands into a multinational, multidisciplinary megalodon, it seemed like an unstoppable force. A source of both pride and annoyance for Austinites, it was also a major driver of the local economy, and its once fledgling film festival had turned into a major launching pad for everything from the most avant-garde of American indies to blockbuster studio comedies. The idea of it ceasing to exist went from unimaginable to all too...

After a number of attempts to delay this year’s Jerusalem Film Festival, organizers have now scrapped plans for a summer edition following a recent spike in Covid-19 cases in Israel, which has resulted in new restrictions from the Ministry of Health on gatherings of large groups, expected to last several months.
Instead, a winter edition is now in the works for Dec. 10-20. The new event will include several films selected for the original summer festival as well as new titles ready to launch this winter. Jff is also developing a series of online programs intended to showcase festival selected titles on the Jerusalem Cinematheque-Israel Film Archive’s streaming platform.
“This is a difficult and painful decision as we have been working on the 37th edition of the Jerusalem Film Festival over the course of the past year,” said Noa Regev, director of the Jerusalem Cinematheque and Jerusalem Film Festival,...

Rachel Anderson and Mary Duong in ‘Bananas’ (Photo: Mia Forrest).
Before SXSW was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mary Duong and Rachel Anderson’s short-form docuseries Bananas was due to screen in the festival’s Episodic Pilot Competition.
After a heartwarming response to the series on Sbs On Demand, the Queensland filmmakers had been excited to increase their global reach. The cancellation was gutting – no less so because Duong was already in the Us. It threw plans for the foreseeable future into the air.
However, for at least the next month, Bananas will stream for free globally on Vimeo as part of a special showcase of works from the SXSW Episodic Competition. Also included are comedies Bored, Cooper’s Bar, The Dream and This Isn’t Me, and documentary Homecoming: The Journey of Cardboard. On April 23, there will be a virtual Q&a with all the creators.

The SXSW festival has announced its program for the Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Special Events, Episodic Pilot Competition, and late addition Features for its 2020 film festival.
This year’s program has 135 feature films, including 99 world premieres, 9 North American premieres, 5 U.S. premieres, and 75 films from first-time filmmakers. The SXSW Midnighters section is a favorite for festival attendees who like the weird, electric and terrifying selections. It includes dark comedies, thrillers and slasher horror.
“Programming the Midnighters section this year felt especially invigorating,” Jarod Neece, SXSW Senior Film Programmer, said. “The filmmaking teams, while particularly diverse, all seem to be using their films as a cathartic lens to view the modern-day world. One trend we noticed was the presence of a strong female protagonist fighting off everything from hordes of zombies, bad dates, creepy rideshare drivers and supernatural forces. As always, genre filmmaking can be found throughout the SXSW program, and...

If you’re one of the filmmakers who supplied some 5,600 submissions to the 2019 Palm Springs International Shortfest, the stakes were high. Not only because Shortfest offers the only short-film market in North America; or, because 369 of those films were selected for juried screenings to an audience of more than 700 over June 18-23.
Those functions matter, but as the world’s biggest short-film festival, Shortfest also draws talent agents, production executives, and producers who are keenly aware that, beyond identifying early talent, short-form content holds tremendous value in the current market. Yes, the Sundance Film Festival is still the best way to get films seen by Hollywood — but in a world that’s (re)discovering the virtues of short-form content, there’s something sexy about an event entirely devoted to its celebration.
While short films have always provided fodder for features, today they’re more likely to fuel web or TV series.

Filmmaker Pippa Bianco first attended the Cannes Film Festival in 2015 with her short film “Share,” which won the Cinefoundation section. The feature-length version of “Share” was produced by A24 and premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival before landing a special screening slot at this year’s Cannes. During this year’s festival, Bianco kept a diary of her experiences leading up to and following the screening of her film, and shared them with IndieWire.
Entry 1
It’s surreal to be heading to Cannes. I’ve been once before when we premiered the short version of this film a few years ago, and standing in the airport now I feel the same feeling. For me, festivals can be exciting but overwhelming — I feel much more comfortable behind a camera or at computer than I do facing an audience. With that short, I was continually reminding myself to enjoy it, that this might never happen again,...

Back in January it was announced that Jordan Peele's Us will be the opening night film for the 2019 SXSW film festival, and now it's been revealed that the new Pet Sematary will make its world premiere as the closing night movie of the festival, joining a lineup that also includes The Curse of La Llorona and the newly announced Midnighters titles.
In addition to Pet Sematary and The Curse of La Llorona (which are listed in the Headliners section), the SXSW 2019 festival will also feature a Midnighters lineup that includes Pollyanna McIntosh's Darlin', Roxanne Benjamin's Body at Brighton Rock, and Travis Stevens' Girl on the Third Floor.
Also joining the festival is Abe Forsythe's Little Monsters, which recently enjoyed a well-received world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (read Heather Wixson's review here).
