The second season of the expensive and exhaustively painstaking remaster of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" hits Blu-ray in a few hours following on from the highly successful launch of the first season back in July.
Aside from an audio glitch in early discs, which was quickly remedied with a replacement program, the remastering job performed on the first season was met with universal acclaim by reviewers and Trek fans alike.
Post-production house CBS Digital was widely, and deservedly, lauded for their work which is amongst the best restorative work ever done on a Blu-ray title in the history of the format. Same goes for Robert Meyer Burnett and his team who have been assembling some truly incredible extras for these sets.
As a result of the quality of all this hard work, many were keenly awaiting this second season set which contains some of the best early episodes of the season.

A quick confession before we begin. I was never a huge fan of the original Star Trek series from the sixties, and while I have grown to appreciate it over the years, it never felt like it was mine in the same way that The Next Generation does. The reason for this is because the first season of Tng, which has just materialised on Blu-ray, began while I was in my teens, and I followed it religiously, watching each episode as it was originally transmitted, and then again and again by way of my friend Al's vast VHS collection of the original releases.
That said, my last viewing of a Next Generation episode was a good decade ago, during which time Blu-ray has become an accepted, nay essential, part of any serious television and movie fan's viewing experience, and so when the news originally broke that Tng was to be...

Update-writethru, 10:25 Am: The new streaming video deal between Verizon and Redbox-parent Coinstar has all of the hallmarks of an announcement that had to be made — even though the companies weren’t ready. Coinstar CEO Paul Davis promised in October to announce his streaming video plans by the end of 2011, and probably felt he had to say something before he meets with analysts later today to discuss his company’s 4Q earnings. All he has to offer, though, are puffy promises, and few details, about the subscription service to be offered in the second half of this year. We don’t know whether it’ll be competitive with Netflix because the companies won’t say what they’re offering consumers and how much they’ll pay. The proposition will be “simple, affordable, and fun,” Verizon Telecom VP of Consumer Product Management Eric Bruno tells me. We don’t even know...
