DC and Marvel have given the world some of the greatest characters in pop culture: Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, and D-Man. So if the two companies were to put their heads together and come up with a character that they could share, that character would be the greatest comic creation of all time, right?
Well, if that’s what you think, then let me introduce you to Axel Asher, aka Access. And let me tell you right from the beginning, that he is not the greatest comic creation of all time.
A History of Crossovers
Before going too far into the history of the greatest comic find of his generation, we have to put the distinction between the big two into their proper context. Long before Snyder bros blasted the MCU for making unserious movies about people in colorful tights, long before Marvel Zombies knocked DC for dealing in boring gods,...

How do you solve a problem like Frank Castle?
The Punisher has had a wild career since Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru created him way back in 1974. Originally a pretty clear cut villain, his popularity saw him frequently guest star so much he morphed into something of an anti-hero. You can blame Frank Miller for that one. His graduation to his own multiple books saw him become one of Marvel’s biggest characters in the early 1990s, together with Wolverine and Ghost Rider. Heck, he even got his own Netflix TV show just a few years ago. So, why has Frank not been flavour of the month lately?

As protests against police brutality go global and enter their third week, Marvel Comics has faced increasing calls to get the Punisher skull off of police gear. The skull is often added to bootleg tactical merchandise used by police and the military (both at home and abroad), as well as, occasionally, official police gear. When pressed on the matter, though, a Marvel spokesperson told io9 precisely nothing. The spokesperson affirmed to io9 that they were taking the issue very seriously, referred readers to a page from a recent issue of the Punisher’s comic, and pointed to the company’s prior statement on social media.

I kind of felt honour bound to review this, with Halloween in our not too distant future. Can you think of many better characters than Ghost Rider at this time of year. I also have a more personal connection in that, every Halloween growing up, I’d always pull a stack of books with a horror connection and read them. I always did the same at Xmas as well, themed reading was a thing back then clearly. Apart from the odd Werewolf By Night, or Tomb of Dracula, the character I loved the most was Johnny Blaze himself, Ghost Rider. Visually awesome, with great villains like Mephisto prone to spring up, and having adventures in a nice little niche area of the Marvel Universe, what was not to like? The 1990′s reboot was ok, with Danny Ketch as the new Ghost Rider,...

Dan Didio and Shane Davis separately have a history of mining the classic DC Universe, maintaining what makes them classic characters while tweaking them for modern consumption - Davis on Superman: Earth One and Didio on, among other things, the best book of the New 52 relaunch, Omac. But these updates are rarely radical departures. Omac was no longer Buddy Blank, but he was still a corporate drone dealing with girlfriend troubles fighting for world peace. The Punisher season 2 introduces a very different version of Jigsaw to the Marvel Netflix universe. We get back to his roots...
You ever see a list of the top Punisher villains? Probably not, because, thanks to the skill and dedication of Frank Castle, most Punisher villains tend to die very quickly in really horrible ways. It’s difficult to maintain a functioning rogues gallery when your whole mission involves blasting them into bad guy McNuggets at every oportunity.
There are some exceptions, however, the most notable of which is Billy "Jigsaw" Russo. Last season, Punisher’s arch nemesis Billy Russo had his visage horrifically carved up in the season finale, and he returns in The Punisher season 2 as a very different take on Jigsaw. His entry to the world of the sadly dwindling Marvel Netflix series of shows should be memorable and potentially violent.

Six episodes were provided for review.
The Defenders may not have been the high-performer that Netflix hoped it would be (our review here), but nevertheless, its premiere essentially concludes “Phase One” of this branch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, setting the stage for new stories with established characters like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist (all of whom have secured another season). Before any of the Defenders return to the small screen, however, it’s Jon Bernthal’s turn in the spotlight. The Walking Dead alum debuted as Frank Castle in Daredevil season 2 and immediately emerged as a fan favorite. Thus, The Punisher was born.
As a character, The Punisher – created by Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru in 1974 – has traditionally been depicted as a sheer force of vengeance. But Castle’s quest for revenge against the criminals who killed his family is all but complete...

In development since 2007, there is still studio interest in a big screen live-action feature based on DC Comics' "Metal Men", starring the synthetic, malleable robots 'Gold', 'Iron', 'Lead', 'Mercury', 'Tin' and 'Platinum':
"Metal Men" debuted in DC Comics' "Showcase" #37, created by writer Robert Kanigher and illustrator Ross Andru, introduced as advanced artificially intelligent robots, created by scientist 'Dr. William "Will" Magnus'.
The six robots were field leader 'Gold', strong man 'Iron', slow-witted and loyal 'Lead', hot-headed 'Mercury', self-doubting and insecure 'Tin' and 'Platinum', aka 'Tina' who believed she was a real woman and in love with her creator.
Each 'Metal Man' also possessed abilities that reflected the traits of their namesake metal: Gold could stretch his form almost infinitely, Iron was super strong, Lead could block harmful radiation by morphing into thick shields, Mercury could melt and pass through small spaces before reforming and Platinum could stretch,...

I’ve been watching DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow over on the CW. Among the characters that have been appearing on the show are Firestorm and Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Well, not so much Hawkman any more, maybe. I didn’t create those three characters but I certainly played with them a lot and, for a while, left my sticky fingerprints all over them. So it’s interesting watching manifestations of them in other media.
I’ll be experiencing that big time come August when the Suicide Squad movie hits the multiplexes. I created Amanda Waller and I defined characters like Deadshot and Captain Boomerang and it will be exciting to see how they translate for the screen. I hope.
None of the character portrayals will translate directly from the comics to movies or TV. I’m okay with that; none of them have so far. Different media have different needs.

Frank Castle may be this slick, overly-competent killer of bad guys, but even he gets embarrassed from time to time.
Even though The Punisher is now the star of his own Netflix series, let's not forget that Frank Castle has been building bodycounts for over forty years. He’s starred in many fantastic storylines and has become one of the more iconic heroes in Marvel history.
He’s had several movies, a handful of video games (including one of the best arcade brawlers ever), cartoon appearances, and more. He’s taken up the mantle of Captain America, been a black man, became an angel, became a Frankenstein, befriended Archie Andrews, and even killed Gwar.
Okay, they were called “Warg,” but same thing.
The thing every Punisher writer – especially Garth Ennis – always has to push is how unflappable and badass Frank is. He’s the coolest guy ever...

Does Jon Bernthal as The Punisher on Netflix have you hungry for more Frank Castle action? These are the comics you should read next.
And death has come to Netflix. Jon Bernthal's The Punisher has once again been unleashed on the world and finally, after three live action attempts, fans finally have the Frank Castle they deserve. It's about damn time, too. You would think the elegant brutal simplicity of the Punisher would have been easy for Hollywood, but no. But here we are, so let the body count begin.
But long hard roads are very familiar to the Punisher. For decades, starting in Amazing Spider-Man #129 by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru, the Punisher has been trying to eradicate crime in the Marvel Universe. In the '80s and '90s, his popularity peaked and the character starred in three monthly titles, countless mini series and specials,...

Sorta Spoiler Notes: Today I’m discussing the latest Suicide Squad reprint, Rogues, and I’ll disclose some plot points. The stories were originally published in the late 80s so a spoiler shouldn’t be needed, but just in case you didn’t read them back then and are considering catching up now, you been warned!
One of the nice side-effects of the upcoming Suicide Squad movie is that DC is pushing into Tpb print my original run. The latest volume comes out April 12 and is entitled Rogues and it’s maybe my favorite one so far. It reprints issues 17 through 25, including the Annual and a Bronze Tiger solo story by Larry Ganem and Peter Krause.
A quick rundown on the Squad. The Original Suicide Squad was created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru and debuted in 1959 in The Brave and the Bold #25. They were pretty much a version of...

The cover to Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru's reprint of The Brave and the Bold #25 is given a Task Force X update from artist Ethan Van Sciver. This pays homage to Howard Chaykin’s original cover to 1987’s Suicide Squad #1, but replacing that lineup are the characters that make up the team from the upcoming movie: Enchantress, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, Killer Croc, Rick Flag, Katana, and Harley Quinn. No Joker unfortunately, and poor Slipknot is once again given short shrift.. but hey, he'll probably die after 5 minutes anyway. This issue is very limited and won't be republished, so if you fancy a copy you'll have to order the next ComicConBox by clicking Here.
