Exclusive: Several sources tell Deadline that the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema circuit is up for sale.
The news comes about a week and a half before CinemaCon, the major studios and exhibitors’ annual love-in in Las Vegas. I’m told that some studios have heard the sales pitch for the cinephile circuit, which counts 41 locations across 13 states. No bidders as of yet.
Also, there’s no word on an asking price for Alamo Drafthouse. However, the Tim League-founded chain cleared $134M at the 2023 box office, +25% over 2022, per box office intel. That percentile jump is higher than the actual domestic B.O. rise of 22% between those two years; the 2023 B.O. for U.S./Canada hit $9 billion.
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema typically touts a gift store of cinema memorabilia, arcade games and DVD rentals, plus a full bar and killer bistro menu with swanky eats and shakes. Also, let’s not forget about...

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema announced a major expansion with seven new theaters including three new regions, Chicago, Birmingham, and St. Louis, and expansions in Washington, D.C. and New York City — with a kung fu-themed Staten island location opening this spring. Alamo Drafthouse, the specialty cinema chain that’s famous for in-theater dining and a strict no-cell phone policy, is expanding its North American footprint.
The Texas-based exhibition company plans to open four additional venues in new regions, including Chicago and Birmingham, as well as markets with existing Alamo Drafthouse locations, such as Grand Prairie, Texas and Glendale, Colo. It intends to welcome those venues — and previously announced in-the-works multiplexes in Staten Island, N.Y.; Arlington, Va.; and St. Louis, Mo. — in late 2022 through 2024.
The news comes as North American movie theaters mount a recovery from Covid-19, which brought the industry to a near standstill. Prolonged theater closures and lack of new product forced Alamo Drafthouse to file for Chapter-11 bankruptcy in early 2021. The company has since dusted itself off and plotted significant growth plans in 2022. As part of its bankruptcy filling, Alamo Drafthouse had to close down several underperforming venues...

Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse Monday renamed its new lower Manhattan theater the Ivan Reitman Cinema after the prolific director of Ghostbusters — and ahead of the theatrical release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, helmed by his son Jason Reitman.

Alamo Drafthouse’s Tim League on Allegations of Company’s Racism and Sexism: ‘I Take Responsibility’
After allegations of sexual harassment, racist attitudes toward customers, and other abuses were leveled against management at Alamo Drafthouse’s Kansas City location last year — charges that had allegedly been previously ignored by corporate brass — the theater chain’s brass have largely been reluctant to discuss the matter publicly. But co-founder and executive chairman Tim League recently opened up about the allegations on a New York Times podcast, saying he takes responsibility and that the company has implemented changes with a goal of preventing abuses in the future.
In a 35-minute, wide-ranging interview with Kara Swisher on “Sway” this week, League briefly discussed the fallout from the expose published by Kansas City alt weekly “The Pitch” in August 2020. Among the claims: managers sexually and physically abused employees and were never disciplined; employees who were injured on the job and were never properly accommodated; and reports that managers targeted predominantly Black...

Alamo founder and executive chairman Tim League and other original investors are also among the minority partners. Fortress is a new investor in the company while Altamont was a pre-existing investor before the chain’s nationwide closure amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We’re so thrilled to be reopening theaters across the country and welcoming back audiences for an unparalleled moviegoing experience with films we’ve been eagerly awaiting for over a year now,” Alamo Drafthouse CEO Shelli Taylor said. “We’re so grateful to our incredible partners at Altamont and Fortress, who are completely aligned with our vision for Alamo Drafthouse’s growth. Rejoice, cinema lovers. Alamo Drafthouse, the theater chain that’s popular for its no-nonsense approach to moviegoing, has emerged from Chapter 11.
The bankruptcy filing was announced in March as the Texas-based company, like many theater chains, was struggling to recover from closures related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, Alamo Drafthouse has completed its sale to Altamont Capital Partners, funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group LLC and Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League.
“We’re so grateful to our incredible partners at Altamont and Fortress, who are completely aligned with our vision for Alamo Drafthouse’s growth,” Alamo Drafthouse CEO Shelli Taylor said in a statement.
Along with the news of the end of its Chapter 11 process, the company announced plans to open five new theaters — with locations in Manhattan, Staten Island, St. Louis and two in Washington D.C. — in 2021 and 2021. Alamo Drafthouse had to close down a few...

Alamo Drafthouse, the boutique theater chain that’s become a favorite among cinephiles, plans to reopen 15 locations in May, including venues in Brooklyn, N.Y., Los Angeles and Dallas.
Alamo’s Brooklyn theater is reviving its box office on May 7, while the Los Angeles and Austin, Texas’ Mueller locations are scheduled to reopen on May 28. By this summer, Alamo Drafthouse anticipates 30 of its U.S. locations will be back online.
The announcement comes on the heels of the recent box office successes of “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Demon Slayer” and “Mortal Kombat.” Though Hollywood has only been dribbling out new releases, a number of potential blockbusters, including “Fast and Furious” sequel “F9,” Marvel’s “Black Widow” and the musical adaptation of “In the Heights,” are expected to arrive in theaters this summer.

Alamo Drafthouse was riding high.
The Austin, Texas-based theater chain had managed the difficult feat of expanding its footprint nationally, popping up in major metropolises such as New York and Los Angeles without losing its indie spirit. Its unabashed love of all things cinema, menus crammed with craft beer and locally sourced snacks, and themed events with A-list talent like Wes Anderson and Rian Johnson made Alamo the envy of the exhibition industry. And then in March 2020, disaster struck. The coronavirus pandemic forced the chain to shutter its 41 locations and furlough 80% of its 6,000 employees.
“You can’t save your way to success during a pandemic,” says Shelli Taylor, Alamo Drafthouse CEO. “That’s a great tool when you have revenue coming in the door, but when there’s no revenue there is no saving. So what do you do?”

Alamo Drafthouse on Wednesday filed for Chapter 11 and sold all of its assets to its senior leadership group, including Altamont Capital Partners and funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group. Alamo founder and executive chairman Tim League and other original investors are also among the buyers.
The restructuring arrangement and bankruptcy, which was filed in Delaware bankruptcy court, will give Alamo incremental financing to help it operate through the pandemic, just as theaters in New York City are primed to open at limited capacity. According to the filing, Alamo’s estimated assets are between $100 million and $500 million, as well as its estimated liabilities.
Founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas, the indie cinema chain expanded to 41 locations nationwide, including recently in downtown Los Angeles. As part of the restructuring, two Texas theater locations and one in Kansas City, Missouri are set to be closed. Development on another in Orlando, Florida, will be “permanently ceased.

Austin, Texas-based, dine-in movie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has filed for voluntary Chapter 11 in Delaware Court and agreed to sell basically all its assets to an investor group including one of its founders Tim League.
The exhibitor, which buckled under the impact of Covid-19, has 37 theaters including locations in LA, Brooklyn and northern Virginia. It’s backed by Altamont Capital. The sale is to Altamont, funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment, League and other original investors. The transaction will provide much-needed financing to stabilize the business.
The first Alamo Drafthouse Cinema was founded in 1997 as a single-screen mom and pop repertory theater in Austin. In May, the Phoenix-based franchises of Alamo Drafthouse in Tempe, Gilbert and Chandler filed for bankruptcy.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the Texas-based theater chain that has become a favorite with cinephiles for its dine-in service and fan-forward approach to exhibition, has filed for Chapter 11. The bankruptcy filing comes as part of an asset purchase agreement with Altamont Capital Partners, a previous investor in the company, as well as affiliates of Fortress Investment Group, a new backer. The company says that operations will continue as normal and the Chapter 11 process and sale will give it the capital it needs to continue operating as it emerges from a public health crisis that left many of its locations closed for months. The agreement involves “the sale of substantially all its assets.”
Founder Tim League will remain involved with the company and is among the lender group buying the assets. League became the company’s executive chairman in April, with Shelli Taylor, a former Starbucks executive, assuming the role of CEO.

While writer-director Brad Bird was working on “The Incredibles” at Pixar, he spent a lot of time with studio co-founder Steve Jobs, and he believes some of the things he learned from the late Apple mogul are lessons that movie theater owners should take to heart with moviegoing in crisis.
“We were talking about merchandising and he said, ‘Fewer things, better things,’ and he was dead on,” Bird said Tuesday during a panel on the future of theatrical movies at TheWrap’s virtual edition of TheGrill. “The studios’ focus has always been about the number of screens and not the quality of screens. On opening day, it’s possible to see a $300 million movie on the terrible, Coke-stained five-foot screen with 10 seats, and you should not be able to see a big movie on its opening in those kinds of conditions.”

Even though numbers for “Tenet” remain low in the U.S. and theaters face several more months of pandemic-fueled turbulence, Warner Bros.’ head of international distribution, Andrew Cripps, on Tuesday defended the film’s box office performance.
“If I can use a phrase from our chairman, Toby Emmerich: ‘It’s a 30-day opening, not a three-day opening,'” Cripps said at TheWrap’s virtual 2020 edition of TheGrill. “We’re in the fourth week and it’s important to note that as of Sunday we’ve broken $250 million internationally. When you do the math, that’s roughly 30 million people coming to see the movie in theaters, which is remarkable considering the situation we are in right now.”

Welcome to TheGrill 2020.
For the first time, we are convening our annual summit about the changes that technology brings to the entertainment industry — over a streaming platform. Now that seems almost normal. Eight months ago, I didn’t dream of such a thing.
But of course, eight months ago the world was a different place.
With a global pandemic impacting every aspect of entertainment, media, politics and culture, accelerating all the trends we’ve examined at TheGrill for the last 10 years, it is a remarkable moment in time, one that will be discussed, debated and analyzed for decades to come.
The next three days will be part of the first draft of history. This year, TheGrill provides a forum for urgent issues that will define the immediate future of the entertainment business. We have worked hard to bring together some exciting voices that will speak to the moment we are in,...

Alamo Drafthouse, the Texas-based theater chain that has been long besieged by claims of impropriety, is now the subject of a new, wide-ranging expose at the Kansas City weekly The Pitch. The story alleges a litany of abuses perpetrated by both the management at the chain’s Kansas City locations and corporate brass across the business. These include sexual harassment and abuse, racist attitudes toward customers, unsafe (and often illegal) work environments, and even stories about ticket sales being shorted to add to Drafthouse’s own coffers.
Alamo has 41 locations in 10 states. Theater amenities include in-theater eating and drinking, specialized programming to supplement studio wide releases, and its signature audience-control rules (i.e. no talking during films). The Kansas City location is one of Alamo’s company-owned core cinemas, rather than a franchisee.
