It seems 2015/2016 shall be marked as the TV season that saw the resurgence of old shows reborn in mini-series form (or “event series” as the Us networks so desperately want us to call them). Its also the year that these returning shows, The X-Files and Heroes Reborn, did nothing but disappoint the fans who loved the shows and hoped – beyond all hope it turns out – that these new iterations would recapture what made the original series so good.
Heroes Reborn comes from original series creator Tim Kring (Heroes, Touch, Daybreak) and begins a year ago, in Odessa, Texas after a terrorist attack leaves the city decimated. Those with extraordinary abilities are blamed for this tragic event forcing them into hiding...

Heroes Reborn picks up five years after the events of the Heroes Season 4 finale with an episode of the same title, "Brave New World." When we last visited this world, Claire Bennett revealed the truth about her abilities letting everyone in on the secret that some people had abilities.
The following four years brought a peaceful coexistence between people without powers and those with powers called EVOs. That peace ended in Odessa on June 13th when a terrorist bomb killed many during a rally at Primatech. The story picks up a year after the attack with EVOs are being targeted, captured and killed.

It's been a long five year wait for fans of Heroes to get closure on what happened after Claire Bennett revealed the truth to the world. It's been just as long for the characters of the show when Heroes Reborn picks up. While the story's continuation includes many new characters, some fan favorites return as well.
Jimmy Jean-Louis portrayed the mysterious Haitian in the show's original run and reappears in the Heroes Reborn premiere when Noah Bennett/Hrg (Jack Coleman) goes looking for answers to his memory loss.

Taken 3 Easily one of the worst movies of 2015 is coming home to DVD and Blu-ray this weekend. To quote my review, "No one cared. No one. Neeson cashed the check and good on him for that. If they want to continue making these things they better pay you."
Cake Jennifer Aniston got a lot of attention for not wearing any makeup in this movie. It almost earned her an Oscar nomination, now, you get to see what all the fuss was about. I personally never ended up seeing this movie. I just couldn't muster the energy or want to watch it. Here's the plot if you so desire: Jennifer Aniston plays Claire Bennett, who initiates a dubious relationship with a widower (Worthington) while confronting fantastical hallucinations of his dead wife (Kendrick). With her feisty housekeeper and caretaker (Barraza) ever at her side, Claire searches for human connection and self-forgiveness in this tale of redemption.

As casting has been coming out lately for NBC’s event series Heroes Reborn, a continuation of the original Heroes, the show about super-powered individuals, fans of the series will be happy to hear this week’s big news. It was just announced that Masi Oka is reprising his role as Hiro Nakamura in Reborn, which has a 13-episode order set to air this fall. According to reports, he is currently set to be in a multi-episode guest-starring arc, and he will join former original cast member Jack Coleman, who plays Noah Bennett, father of Claire Bennett (Nashville’s Hayden Panettiere). “I’m excited to return to my Heroes roots,” Oka said in a statement. “Hiro Nakamura was such an inspirational role to play, and I’m hoping the fans will enjoy seeing him back on TV.” “The character of Hiro Nakamura was such a huge part of the first series’ success,...

If you're betting on "Boyhood" to win big at the upcoming Academy Awards, think again! Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" was deemed to be the big Oscar frontrunner but a double-dose of guild awards over the weekend tamed those prospects down. First, the Producers Guild of America gave their top honor to Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," and the Screen Actors Guild followed suit!
"Birdman" took home the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award! But, since the movie is about acting, this award is just fitting.
My biggest surprise, and it'a welcome surprise indeed, was "The Theory of Everything's" Eddie Redmayne taking home the Outstanding Male Actor trophy. Sorry Michael Keaton! I think Redmayne truly gave the Performance of the Year award!
The usual suspects took home the movie acting awards with wins for Julianne Moore for Best Actress in "Still Alice," J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash,...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

The nominations for the 21 annual Screen Actors Guild Awards have just been announced, with Birdman leading the way, earning all four of its possible nominations out of the five film categories. Boyhood, The Imitation Game, and The Theory of Everything followed right behind with three.
As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be had. In the supporting categories, it was a slight shock seeing Meryl Streep make the cut for Into the Woods after not having gotten very much buzz for the role thus far, but then again, awards groups have always loved Streep, so it wasn’t something that was entirely unexpected. The nominee that was completely unexpected, however, was Naomi Watts for St. Vincent, taking a spot that was thought to belong to Jessica Chastain for A Most Violent Year or perhaps Laura Dern for Wild.
