Just in time for the Lupitia Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie Star Wars news, musicians Neko Case and Kelly Hogan have released their new song, "These Aren't The Droids." The future is here and it is awesome! If you're a straight white dude. For the rest of us? This utopia isn't quite what was advertised. Taking aim at geek culture from the inside with light-hearted comedy (and kittens!) Case and Hogan purpose a new vision for the world of tomorrow. A vision that includes lyrics like: 1. "Space drinks, space clothes, space silver jumpsuits, space world harmony, space silver moon boots…so much silver!" 2. "But we didn't realize, the future…was designed by teenage guys!" 3. "Three boobed aliens on stripper poles. They want shiny sex bots with only holes." 4. "It is way past time for a revolution to your hairless post-apocalyptic constitution. Which face it, is basically Maxim mixed with Mad and Cracked.

New Orleans, April 27 (Reuters) - Musician Troy Andrews, better known as "Trombone Shorty," witnessed his first New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival at age 12 - not from the viewing area but on stage.
"I was playing with my brother's brass band," said Andrews, now 27.
At this year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Andrews will be given a high honor. He will perform for the first time as the closing act of the final day on the biggest stage. That time slot previously had long been occupied by one of New Orleans' most famous bands, the Neville Brothers.
The festival, which began Friday and ends May 5, has music lovers filling the walkways linking 12 stages arranged across 150 acres of the festival grounds, not far from downtown.
During the next two weekends, some 500 bands will perform at the festival, including a sprinkling of big names from Billy Joel, Dave Matthews and Adam Lambert to Jill Scott,...

Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Psychedelic Pill (Reprise)
A far better album than Young & Crazy Horse's shabby Americana from earlier this year, not so much because it's songs written by Neil (certainly nobody will be impressed by the rather feeble lyrics on display here) as that he stretches out and jams with the Horse. Really stretches out, as in tracks lasting 27:35, 16:48, 8:33, and 16:26 (along with five tracks in the three- to four-minute range). He quit drugs, but he didn't quit reaching for another state of mind; I'd even say that he may be using this music as his drug. The hypnotic trips he takes here make this his best new album in over twenty years, and one of his top five post-'70s albums. Pretty good for a guy who just celebrated his 67th birthday.
David Byrne & St. Vincent: Love This Giant (4Ad)
This could have been a style rip-off.

It's not just ghosts, ghouls and goblins haunting New Orleans on Halloween weekend this year. The Big Easy's music lovers can also look forward to seeing many of their favorite rappers, rock stars and more at the Voodoo Experience Festival 2010, set to take place at City Park in New Orleans from October 29-31 this year.
On Thursday (June 17) the festival announced that its lineup will include musicians such as Drake, Muse and Ozzy Osbourne among the high-profile performers. When the announcement was made at midnight, the fest's official website crashed for several hours, according to Hit Fix, possibly indicating an unprecedented interest in this year's show.
"I can't think of a better way to celebrate Halloween than with a performance in New Orleans," Osbourne said in a press release.

HBO launched the new David Simon series "Treme" last night. Named after a neighborhood in New Orleans, the story opens in the hurricane-rattled city just months after Katrina wrecked it in 2005. Like "The Wire" before it, we follow a group of local residents who are just trying to find their way in the world. Unlike the Baltimore-set crime drama, there's no cops vs. criminals conflict at the heart of this story; if anything, it's everyday people vs. the government that failed them and the mainstream that martyred, then forgot, them.
Simon is an exemplary storyteller, seen by many -- yes, me too -- as a modern-day Shakespeare. If you're tired of hearing that "The Wire" is the best television ever, then you've probably not watched the show. Simon is also known for his work on "Homicide: Life on the Street," "The Corner" and "Generation Kill," as well as the book...

David Simon has become famous for creating the type of television that make viewers want to breath inside his detail-heavy landscapes — even if those settings (like his gritty but all-to-real Baltimore streets in "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "The Wire") tend to get bloody and gruesome pretty frequently.
Simon's new show "Treme" (named after the New Orleans neighborhood where most of the action takes place) debuted on HBO with an 80-minute premiere on Sunday night (April 11), and its dedication to those inviting hues is no different. It's about a post-Katrina New Orleans (a title card at the top of the show reads "Three Months After"), and there are full five minute blocks of footage that show characters wading through wrecked houses and their own belongings, now unrecognizable by all the flood damage. But the there's something about it all that makes you want to be there regardless,...

Few things are more identifiable to New Orleans than the Rebirth Brass Band. It's fitting then that "The Wire" creator David Simon kicks off his post-Katrina Crescent City series with a second line featuring the legendary performers. Rebirth was recently in New York City for a couple of shows, and we chatted with bass drummer and co-founder Keith Frazier to hear his thoughts on the series and its New Orleans inspiration.

I don't get excited very often about television. Hell, I barely watch the damn thing. But I've made it well-known that my all-time favorite television show was HBO's "The Wire," created and produced by David Simon. A few months ago, we reported that Simon had another show in the works that HBO picked up. Fellow "Wire" junkie Seth had this to say about it back then:
He started working on "Treme" shortly after "The Wire" wrapped, turning his focus to post-Katrina New Orleans. Simon has talked about how the intent of this show is to intimately focus on the people, and the city itself, trying to rebuild themselves from the brink of utter devastation.
The show looks nothing less than amazing. Amazing cast. Amazing production. A-fucking-mazing cinematography. A couple "Wire" alums are participating: Wendell Pierce and Clarke Peters. The show will also feature John Goodman, Steve Zahn, Melissa Leo, Khandi Alexander,...

Yes, We Could. That's what we learned at this year's Super Bowl -- that and the fact that the great Roger Daltrey is increasingly beginning to resemble the lovely Dyan Cannon. Please add your own musical flavors to this celebratory gumbo: New Orleans Stomp - Louis Armstrong New Orleans - Gary U.S. Bonds I Wish I Was In New Orleans (In The Ninth Ward) - Tom Waits The Saints Are Coming - U2 & Green Day When The Saints Go Marching In - Rebirth Brass Band New Orleans - Cowboy Mouth Louisiana - Randy Newman The Battle Of New Orleans - Johnny Horton City Of New Orleans - Steve Goodman Mardi Gras In New Orleans - Fats Domino Goin' Back To New Orleans - Dr. John New Orleans Stunna - Juvenile New.
