Robert De Niro is adding another TV project to his plate.
The Oscar winner is attached to star in and executive produce a Paramount+ drama titled Bobby Meritorious, from writer Billy Ray (The Comey Rule, Captain Phillips) and Paramount Television Studios. The streamer outbid several other outlets for the project from its corporate sibling and has committed to develop it.
Should it go forward, the Paramount+ show would be De Niro’s second leading role in a TV series. He’s also starring in Netflix’s six-episode thriller Zero Day, from Narcos EP Eric Newman.

A hit for over a decade since its original release, “Avatar” once again dominated the box office with an impressive re-release in theaters. Ahead of the upcoming sequel, the 2009 sci-fi epic wowed with 30 million worldwide in ticket sales, as reported on Sept. 25.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

“When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s dramatization of the wrongful arrest and conviction of five black teenagers in New York City after the rape of a Central Park jogger 20 years ago, has been the most-viewed series on Netflix for the past 13 days.
“‘When They See Us’ has been the most-watched series on Netflix in the Us every day since it premiered on May 31,” the streamer tweeted Wednesday.

In 2012, Ken Burns made the documentary called The Central Park Five. Wamg’s Melissa Thompson wrote how the film told of the story of five black teenagers who were arrested in 1989 for the brutal beating and rape of a woman jogger in New York’s Central Park .
“What followed was one of the worst miscarriages of justice anyone could ever imagine. Starting with the New York City cops who interrogated the boys without parents or lawyers present, to the media, who created a mob-mentality screaming with bloodlust, with their tabloid headlines and made up term “wilding wolf pack” to whip the public into a frenzy of demands for the death penalty.
And all the while these poor kids had nothing to do with the horrific crime, other than the fact that they were in the park on that same night. There was absolutely no evidence connecting them to the case,...

Netflix has released the trailer for Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us,” a four-part limited series about the wrongly convicted Central Park Five.
Based on the true case of five teenagers of color, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit, the show follows the young men in the spring of 1989 when they are first questioned about the brutal assault of a Caucasian female jogger in New York’s Central Park. The later part of the series will also see them as men, spanning 25 years and highlighting their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement they reached with the city of New York in 2014.
“Why are they doing us like this?” one of the boys asks in the trailer. “What other way they ever do us?” replies another.
The trailer shows snippets of courtroom battles, press coverage and family devastation in the wake of the trial and subsequent convictions.

Ava DuVernay’s upcoming Netflix limited series on the brutal crime and false prosecutions that shocked NYC and the nation 30 years ago now has a launch date and a new title.
The four-part series formerly known as Central Park Five will be called When They See Us and will be going global on the streamer on May 31, the Oscar-nominated director revealed this morning.
“In 1989, five black and brown teen boys were wrongly accused of a crime they did not commit and branded The Central Park Five, a moniker that has followed them since that time. In 2019, our series gives the five men a platform to finally raise their voices and tell their full stories,” said DuVernay today on the name change.

Netflix has unveiled the trailer for Quincy, its documentary about musical icon Quincy Jones that is co-directed by his daughter Rashida Jones and Alan Hicks. The film is prepping for its world premiere Sunday at the Toronto Film Festival, where it is playing in the Tiff Docs section ahead of its global launch September 21 on the streaming service and in elect theaters.
The film threads vérité moments with private archival footage to reveal the force behind one of the most influential figures in music and pop culture over the past 70 years. Jones, himself a trumpeter, producer, conductor, composer and arranger of course, also discovered and nurtured the biggest talents of the past 50 years from Lesley Gore and Michael Jackson to Oprah Winfrey and Will Smith.
Says Jones, now 85, as the who’s who of mega-stars flicks across the screen: “I’m a survivor — my whole life has been like that.
