ABC recently unveiled its 2024-2025 primetime schedule, which sees the network airing just five scripted series, including new dramas “High Potential” and “Doctor Odyssey.” “Grey’s Anatomy” will shift one hour to the 10:00 p.m. slot on Thursdays while the network will mark the return of “The Wonderful World of Disney” to its schedule.
ABC
“Dancing with the Stars” will be moving to Tuesday nights so that the network can air consistent programming that won’t be interrupted by “Monday Night Football” broadcasts scheduled for select Mondays. Said Monday night programming options will be announced at a later date.
Following “Dancing with the Stars” will be “High Potential,” written by Oscar-nominated Drew Goddard and based on the popular French series. The crime procedural stars Kaitlin Olson as Morgan, a single mom with an exceptional mind whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with a by-the-book seasoned detective.

Doctor Odyssey, ABC’s new cruise ship procedural premiering this fall, is “Ryan Murphy at his outrageous, over-the-top best,” reports Joshua Jackson.
From 9-1-1 creator Murphy, Doctor Odyssey stars Fringe alum Jackson as Max, the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship “where the staff works hard and plays harder,” says the ABC synopsis. “It’s all hands on deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”

Family Guy was one of the biggest stars of the 2024 upfronts, prominently featured at two different presentations – Fox and Disney. Seth MacFarlane’s animated hit helped open Fox’s event and then was part of a Disney skit featuring an animated version of the company’s ad chief Rita Ferro making a sales pitch while hanging out with Peter Griffin and his dog, Brian.
Ironically, upfront presentations focus on fall schedules, and, despite all the attention, Family Guy actually is not on the fall schedule for the first time since the show was resurrected by Fox 19 years ago..
Both Fox and Disney have the right to claim Family Guy — Fox airs it and Disney produces it through 20th Television Animation.

Big changes are ahead for Grey’s Anatomy. The long-running medical drama has been renewed for Season 21, but the show’s making some major moves next season. The ABC drama is moving to 10 p.m. on Thursdays and will reportedly be losing series regulars Jake Borelli and Midori Francis amid a budget cut. Will Season 21 be the end of the road for Grey’s Anatomy? “Not at all,” Disney TV Group President Craig Erwich told Deadline. He explained that the timeslot move from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. is a “great opportunity for ABC to launch a new show [Doctor Odyssey], as well as to keep Grey’s on a night where it’s been extraordinarily successful for many years.” The show is nearing the end of its milestone 20th season and remains the longest-running medical drama on TV. “I think the show is creatively firing on all cylinders and continues to...

There are many changes coming to Grey's Anatomy, and not all of them will be exciting for the general audience. While the show has managed to survive major cast changes and allow Ellen Pompeo to explore other career opportunities outside of the medical drama she has been a part of for 20 years, it will now face another challenge.
Fans who are used to tuning in to Grey's Anatomy the old-fashioned way, by turning on the TV every Thursday at 9 p.m., will have to change their habits and stay up for an extra hour. Here's why ABC made the decision.
ABC 2024/2025 Fall Schedule Changes
Even though Grey's Anatomy has already been renewed for season 21, fans of the show still have plenty to worry about. First and foremost, ABC is moving the show an hour later into the night to 10 p.m., now that the schedule for the upcoming 2024/2025 broadcast season has been officially announced.

When a reliable performer like The Rookie, which has always been on the fall schedule if not delayed by a pandemic or strike, is suddenly not in a network’s starting lineup for the season, fans understandably would be worried.
Magnifying their concerns is the fact that The Rookie is headed into its seventh season, which is when a lot of broadcast series are canceled these days, including two ABC dramas, Station 19 and The Good Doctor, this year.
Meanwhile, Will Trent, which launched in midseason two years ago, had its first chance to get on the ABC fall schedule but didn’t get it.
Keeping the two dramas on the bench does not signal a lack of confidence in them.
“The opposite,” Disney TV Group President Craig Erwich told Deadline in an interview tied to the Disney upfront presentation.

Hulu is set to air Jim Gaffigan’s next comedy special as the launch title of the streamer’s new standup comedy brand.
Gaffigan’s new special, “The Skinny,” will debut on Nov. 22 under the new “Hulu’s Laughing Now” brand. The brand will feature 12 new comedy specials per year, or one per month. The announcement was made as part of Disney’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on Tuesday.
“This is probably the biggest announcement that will happen to television since the invention of the TV dinner,” Gaffigan said onstage. “They’re doing it not half assed. They’re doing it full assed. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say that.”
“The Skinny” was taped earlier this year in Boston at the Wilbur Theater. The special, Gaffigan’s 11th stand-up special, will launch on Hulu and on Disney+ outside the U.S.

“The Golden Bachelor was probably the television event last year,” ABC TV Group President Craig Erwich said in an interview with Deadline on the day of the Disney upfront presentation. The Bachelor offshoot was so successful, it spawned a highly rated special, The Golden Wedding.
But just three months after Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist tied the knot, they filed for divorce having never lived together. The controversy raised questions about the future of the franchise whose previously ordered spinoff, The Golden Bachelorette, premieres this fall.
The Golden Bachelor is not going anywhere, Erwich suggested.
“I think Golden Bachelor is a show that’s about finding love at a later age. It’s incredibly root-able, it’s aspirational, and that franchise and those values extend to a lot of different people and a lot of different stories. So we’re very dedicated to this franchise,” he said.

Grey’s Anatomy already has cemented its place in the TV history books. Now it’s just about enhancing its legacy. But like every long-running series on broadcast, the hit medical drama also has to abide by the budget constraints imposed by parent media companies, which have been reigning in costs. As Deadline reported exclusively yesterday, Grey’s Anatomy has been asked to trim its budget for its upcoming 21st season, which will impact the cast.
Additionally, ABC this morning unveiled its fall schedule where Grey’s is shifting from 9 Pm to 10 Pm on Thursdays. Deadline asked Disney TV Group President Craig Erwich whether the moves signal a potential end game for the show.

Well, if you had tried to get us to guess the ABC 2024-25 fall season announcement, we couldn’t have predicted much of it.
There are new shows sprinkled throughout, but ABC is going almost full reality, which is a choice.
Let’s see what we’ve got to work with here.
Two new shows will interest TV Fanatics: High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson, which was delayed due to the strikes, and Doctor Odyssey, starring Joshua Jackson as a cruise ship doctor.
High Potential gets a 10/9c slot on Tuesdays after Dancing with the Stars.
Despite the relationship disaster of The Golden Bachelor, ABC is dedicating an hour and a half weekly to The Golden Bachelorette while snuggling award-winning comedy Abbott Elementary between that and a docuseries called Scamanda.
Thursdays find Doctor Odyssey after 9-1-1 and before Grey’s Anatomy.
And TV Fanatic favorites The Rookie and Will Trent? Saved for midseason.

ABC will once again have Abbott Elementary as a centerpiece of its Wednesday night in 2024-25 — but it will begin the season without any companion comedies.

ABC is doubling down with Ryan Murphy on Thursday nights. The Alphabet network revealed a fall 2024 schedule on Tuesday that features the Murphy’s “9-1-1” and newcomer “Doctor Odyssey” on Thursday nights.
The move now turns the night — long the home for Shonda Rhimes’ hit “Tgit” franchises, into a bit of a “Tgim” — “Thank God It’s Murphy” — and shifts “Grey’s Anatomy” to 10 p.m.
Also, the network revealed that it is going with an “Abbott Elementary” island on Wednesdays, sandwiched between a 90-minute format for “The Golden Bachelorette” and then the unexpected, previously unannounced true crime ABC News docuseries “Scamanda.”
But don’t fret for “Abbott,” says Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich. He tells Variety that after the success of “The Golden Bachelor” in the fall, lead-in from “The Golden Bachelorette” will “position it to continue to garner both audience as well as the critical claim that it so deserves.

Grey’s Anatomy continues to be in a league of its own, landing a renewal for a 21st season. The pickup, which comes three episodes into Grey’s Anatomy‘s landmark 20th season, extends its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama, which it initially set in 2019, and the longest-running ABC primetime scripted series. I hear Season 21 is expected to consist of 18 episodes, up from the 10-episode strike-impacted 20th season.
The early renewal is a testament to the show’s ability to reinvent itself and stay relevant even with its lead, Ellen Pompeo, not being on-screen full-time as a new group of interns was introduced last season. Pompeo continues to recur in addition to serving as an executive producer and providing the voiceover that opens and closes each episode.

Grey’s Anatomy is headed into its 20th season, and that big milestone is front and center in the series’ official poster, which features cast members arranged around the number 20. Like last year’s official cast photo, this year’s poster includes the main cast, plus recurring guest stars Debbie Allen (who is also Grey’s executive producer/director) and Scott Speedman. (The only person missing from last year’s group is Kelly McCreary who exited the series last season.)
Naturally, the three remaining original cast members, Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr., are most prominent.(As Deadline reported in our Season 20 preview, Pompeo, who is an executive producer, will continue to get top billing. While technically no longer a series regular, she still does the voiceovers and recurs, with her character Meredith remaining the heart of the show.)

Grey’s Anatomy continues to rewrite the TV history books, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama with the upcoming landmark 20th season, which premieres this Thursday, March 14.
This also marks the first season of Meg Marinis, an 18-year Grey’s Anatomy veteran, as the series’ showrunner. And she is not planning it as the drama’s final chapter.
“I’ve not been informed that this is the last season so I’m going to keep going and telling stories as long as they let me,” she told Deadline in an interview tied to the Season 20 premiere. “We still have stories to tell. We receive a tremendous amount of support from the studio and the network and from Shondaland. So I’m going to keep going until they tell me to put that pen down.”
Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy comes from Rhimes’ Shondaland and ABC Signature, part of Disney Television Studios.

For the first time since at least 1999, a brand new daytime soap opera is closer to making its way to broadcast television. CBS Studios and NAACP Venture announced today they are developing a new daytime drama series for the CBS Television Network titled “The Gates,” with veteran writer Michele Val Jean set as writer and showrunner.
Val Jean, who exited “The Bold and the Beautiful” last month as a scriptwriter after writing more than 2,000 episodes of daytime dramas and winning multiple Daytime Emmy and WGA Awards, will also serve as an executive producer for “The Gates” alongside Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner.
The potential series will follow the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. It will be produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP production venture in partnership with P&g Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble. P&g, in particular, might...

When 9-1-1 was canceled, our hearts sank.
Luckily, the cancellation came with a caveat: Fox's former flagship series was being picked up by rival network ABC.
It was a stunning decision that came after a booming 9-1-1 Season 6, which saw the series re-embracing many qualities that made it such a success from the onset.
At the time, Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich said:
"Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons, and we are honored to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC."
When the last season wrapped up, all the principal characters were in a solid place, with the 118 even doing some bonding on the roof, memories of their most recent triumphs playing fresh on their minds.

Does the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour still hold value?
That topic was a frequent debate at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, California, where the TCA winter press tour wrapped Thursday after two weeks and a dizzying number of panels featuring stars, producers and the occasional executive.
TCA can still bring out the big stars (Apple had Michael Douglas, Hulu delivered Jon Bon Jovi, and Annette Bening and Snoop Dogg were highlights at NBCU) but the real value — aside from showcasing programming to a shrinking press corps that has been overwhelmed by Peak TV — comes from executive sessions that can help lay out a platform strategy that many will cover for months on end.
Before we get into the biggest takeaways from TCA, allow us to make an appeal to Netflix, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global to return to press tour. Yes, we know it’s...

This article contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 3.
From the beginning, the Hulu comedy mystery series Only Murders in the Building has been pretty clear about its premise. As the name suggests, lead characters Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) only solve murders that happen in their New York City apartment building The Arconia. After season 2 ended with Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) falling dead on a broadway stage, season 3 went so far as to have Ben come back from the dead just so he could suffer his final death in the Arconia. The show clearly takes its premise seriously, but one major change in season 4 will test how far it can go.
According to Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich, Only Murders in the Building is officially leaving the Arconia in season 4 and heading to Los Angeles. During the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour,...

When asked about the decision to end the series, Erwich shared with Deadline, “Well, every show has its own journey so to speak. In the case of Station 19, it was time to bring that story to an end. I love Station 19, and I think what’s amazing about Station 19 is that it was yes, a spinoff of Grey’s. But it really became its own show that stood on its own creatively and was fully realized and unique unto itself, and we’ve been very proud to have it on the air.

We’re learning more about the upcoming sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The final chapter of the Emmy-winning Hulu series originally was to begin production in 2023 for a fall 2024 premiere, but that schedule, of course, was delayed by the strikes. In an interview with Deadline, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich, who oversees content for Hulu Originals, said the sixth season now is set to begin production this summer for premiere in 2025. The series was renewed for its sixth and final season in September 2022, just ahead of its Season 5 premiere.
Season 5 follows June (Elisabeth Moss) in the aftermath of Commander Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) murder and the consequences she must face for her role in the gruesome slaying. At a minimum, she will have to face off with his widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), and on some level Gilead. But mainly, she will be forced to redefine her identity and purpose,...
