Exclusive: Composer Ólafur Arnalds, who won a Bafta for his work on Broadchurch and had compositions featured on Nomadland and The Hunger Games, has boarded documentary Ari’s Theme as executive producer ahead of its world premiere at Hot Docs.
Nathan Drillot and Jeff Lee Petry’s work follows the real-life figure of Ari Kinarthy, a 34 year old music composer with the rare genetic condition Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2, which causes his muscles to deteriorate and will shorten his life.
By sixteen, he had lost the ability to move his arms but through a music therapy program he was introduced to composing, finding his life’s purpose.
The documentary follows Kinarthy 18 years later as he embarks on the project to create the soundtrack of the most impactful memories of his young life in a bid to leave legacy.
“We can’t ever know how long we’ll be remembered or what impact we really made.

Marvel’s Eternals achieved a depth of diversity in its ensemble, as exemplified by the casting of Salma Hayek, who plays the role of Ajak, a key member of the film’s titular group of gods on Earth. Yet, while a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be a notable coup for the veteran 54-year-old Mexican actress, her presence ended up providing inspiration for the film’s director, Chloé Zhao, now a Best Picture/Director Oscar winner for Nomadland.
Zhao dove into the deep end of the MCU pool with an adaptation of Jack Kirby’s idiosyncratic team title. After all, the film represents a tremendous threshold for the MCU, since it’s tethered to source material that, while beloved by comic connoisseurs, is nevertheless unknown to average audiences. It’s the kind of crossroads at which Marvel Studios found itself with 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which managed...

Chloé Zhao will never forget one particular night shoot while filming “Eternals,” Marvel’s upcoming movie about a group of immortals living on Earth whose leader is Ajak, played by Salma Hayek. It was a cold and drizzly evening on location in an English forest in the fall of 2019, and the Oscar-winning director told the cast, which includes Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani, that they could return to their trailers while some technical issues were being resolved and it was unclear when the cameras would start rolling again.
But Hayek remained on set, sitting on an apple box while listening to Nils Frahm’s song “Says” on her earphones. “I think she saw that I was overwhelmed, so she asked me to take a moment with her,” Zhao recalls. “She got me to sit by her and rest my head on her lap, and she put her earphones over my ears.

Tripping with Nils Frahm is having its world premiere on Mubi on December 3, 2020.With Nils Frahm's new concert film premiering today, the German musician, who scored Sebastian Schipper's Victoria and the multi-screen Cate Blanchett art work Manifesto, has generously shared a list of his favorite film music. Featuring scores by Miles Davis (Elevator to the Gallows), Eleni Karaindrou (Eternity in a Day), Vincent Gallo (Buffalo 66), and Air (The Virgin Suicides), the selection is eclectic and inspiring, cutting across genres, decades, and music styles. Frahm writes:"I have always respected and admired filmmakers. I believe no other type of artist generally works harder than the director. A good director is like a great musician, since films are like long songs or albums, only even more complicated.
One could add: a musician is even more like a filmmaker, so his or her compositions respect the art of storytelling, timing, and the change of atmosphere.

Not everyone in Knoxville, Tennessee, knows exactly what to make of Big Ears. “I’ll admit it. I’ve never heard of a single artist on this festival,” reads the top comment on last December’s lineup-announcement post on the city’s Reddit forum, a recurring sentiment among much of the city’s non-music-head contingent — from service-industry workers to cab drivers — over the past weekend. “There’s two reactions,” festival founder Ashley Capps told Rolling Stone. “One is completely mystified. The other is, ‘This is the festival of my dreams.

Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the 15 tracks that have been shortlisted for the Best Original Song Oscar this year. And while there were a handful of head-scratching omissions (from heavyweights like Céline Dion’s “Ashes” to soul-stirring dark horses like the title track from “Hearts Beat Loud”), the songs that are still in contention represent one of the strongest fields in recent memory. The remaining tunes represent a wide variety of musical styles, running the gamut from country to hip hop, from a Disney ballad to a smirking parody of Disney ballads, and from superhero epics to “A Star Is Born.”
Here are the 15 tracks that are still in the running for Best Original Song, ranked from worst to best.
15. “I’ll Fight” (Diane Warren)

Los Angeles-based virtual reality startup Survious is getting ready to launch Electronauts, a new virtual reality (Vr) app that allows users to playfully mix and remix songs in real-time. Electronauts will launch on Htc Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation Vr headsets on August 7, and come with remixable tracks from musicians including The Chainsmokers, Odesza, Steve Aoki, Tiesto and DJ Shadow.
Survios first announced Electronauts late last year, and then demonstrated it at CES in Las Vegas this past January. The app sits somewhere between a game and a music production tool: It allows players jam with the individual elements of a track, and arrange them on the fly. Users can also team up with their online friends to jam together, and the music is accompanied by trippy 3D visuals.
Here’s the complete list of tracks available to remix with Electronauts at launch:
The Chainsmokers – Roses (ft. Rozes)
Odesza – Say My Name (ft.

The 15th anniversary edition of Fyf Fest, set to take place in Los Angeles in July, has been canceled, it was announced Sunday.
The fest was set to feature Janet Jackson, Florence + the Machine, and Future, but a statement posted to the Fyf Fest website said Goldenvoice and parent company Aeg “felt unable to present an experience on par with the expectations of our loyal fans and the Los Angeles music community this year.” Sources indicated that low ticket sales were a factor in the cancellation.
According to the statement, ticket purchasers will receive full refunds, including service fees. Fyf added that they will work to schedule local shows featuring artists from 2018’s lineup.
Fans and industry observers had praised this year’s fest lineup for its diversity, particularly in light of male-heavy lineups for most of the summer’s music festivals. In addition to Jackson, Future, and Fatm, My Bloody Valentine,...

Epistemology of the Closet: Dunn’s Impressive Debut a Pronounced Portrait of Agitated Angst
Notable short filmmaker Stephen Dunn (Pop-up Porno, 2015) makes an impressive feature debut with Closet Monster, a film easily classified as a coming-of-age/coming-out drama but augmented by a masterful sense of tone and visual authority. As ambient as a thriller but without the frills of genre as metaphor, you’d be hard pressed to recall a recent cinematic endeavor that so vividly and compellingly relates the modern queer teen’s terrified angst so effectively. Grappling with familiar yet nevertheless pertinent issues in regards to the heteronormative machinations Lgbt youth struggle to navigate, the Canadian helmer unveils an original and moody psychological portrait of agonized adolescence.
Oscar (Connor Jessup) is an aspiring special effects make-up artist finishing up his last year of high school in small town Newfoundland. Hanging out with his friend Gemma (Sofia Banzhof), who...
