Film premiere and headlines spilling from a trio of fests in full swing (Venice), just starting (Telluride) and queued up (Toronto) have indie exhibitors and distributors the most hopeful since Covid hit that a stream of new films could fire up the arthouse market.
Tod Fields’ Cate Blanchett-starrer Tár (debuted to a six-minute standing ovation in Venice), Timothée Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino’s Bones And All (also just screened on the Lido), and Empire of Light with Olivia Colman, set to world premiere at Telluride, and a raft of others are slated for fall theatrical release. A deluge of specialty films from Sundance and Cannes will also move into U.S. cinemas later this month.
“Arthouse theaters are behind where they were in 2019, but I think this fall things will come racing back. These festivals have the goods,” said John Vanco, Gm of New York’s IFC Center.

After garnering international acclaim for his on-screen performances in “Get Out,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Black Panther,” Daniel Kaluuya is now behind the camera to produce the satirical comedy “Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.”
The Focus Features film, which premieres Sept. 2 in theaters and on Peacock, follows the comeback journey of Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs, played by Sterling K. Brown, and his wife, Trinitie, played by Regina Hall, after a scandal threatens their elite status.
Kaluuya, who produced the film through his company 59, sees the comedy as elevating the mockumentary genre and was involved in the project when writer and directed Adamma Ebo floated the idea of having “a Regina Hall type” play Trinitie.
For Kaluuya, who was giving script notes to the likes of British playwriting royalty Jack Thorne and Lucy Kirkwood by the time he was a teenager, producing comes naturally — and is something that he plans to continue.

As Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements ramp up the output from their Tomorrow Studios shingle, they’ve identified the first project they plan to bring out via their new deal with Julia Garner.
Garner and her producing partner Rowan Riley, via their company Alma Margo, sealed a first-look deal with Tomorrow earlier this year. Their first series will be a drama about an international jewel heist titled “Balabusta.”
“She’s very engaged and involved in every step of the way,” Adelstein said of Garner. “That’s probably one of the best deals we’ve ever made. We’re really happy to be in business with her.”
Garner, of course, is on a roll, having scored Emmy nominations this week in both lead actress in a limited series (for “Inventing Anna”) and supporting actress in a drama (for “Ozark”). Garner already has two Emmys, having won for “Ozark” in 2019 and 2020 in the supporting drama actress field.

Daniel Kaluuya is teaming with Mattel Films to produce a new live-action Barney the Dinosaur film.
Barney, the eponymous purple dinosaur of popular 1990s PBS children’s program Barney & Friends, appears to be next in line for a comeback in an era in which comebacks are nigh-obligatory and retro reigns supreme. In this case, the recently-minted toy company studio arm, Mattel Films, is developing a new live-action film project, joined in the endeavor by, intriguingly enough, Oscar-nominated Get Out and Black Panther actor Daniel Kaluuya. – And no, this won’t be a bizarre, satirically-laced Jordan Peele-directed horror rendition.
It has been announced that the untitled Barney live-action revival movie is in development from producers in the aforementioned Mattel Films along with Kaluuya via his 59% banner, also represented by his partners, Rowan Riley and Amandla Crichlow. Also onboard to produce are Valparaiso’s David Carrico, Adam Paulsen and Bobby Hoppey.

Someone wake up Baby Bop: “Barney” the Purple Dinosaur is getting his own movie, thanks to a collaboration between Mattel Films and Daniel Kaluuya.
The live-action project will mark the first collaboration between Mattel Films, Valparaiso Pictures and “Get Out” star Kaluuya’s 59% production company. In addition to Kaluuya, 59%’s Rowan Riley and Amandla Crichlow will also executive produce the movie, as will Valparaiso’s David Carrico, Adam Paulsen and Bobby Hoppey, and Kevin McKeon of Mattel Films.
“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to ‘Barney’ that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films said in Friday’s announcement. “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”

An easy way to describe “The Bisexual” is “What if ‘Chasing Amy’ was not directed by Kevin Smith, but a bisexual woman?” — and it’s a description that creator Desiree Akhavan appreciates. “I’ll take it,” she said to IndieWire in a recent interview. “I 100 percent agree with that synopsis.”
Akhavan, who also directed this year’s Sundance favorite “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” didn’t have anything against “Chasing Amy.” But, she felt, “what if it was written from the perspective of Amy? Which is what I care about more. That’s why I like that film — I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a story I can relate to.’ That’s comedy, that’s something really intriguing to me. But, I didn’t want to know it from Ben Affleck’s point of view.”

If Cannes’ Thierry Frémaux doesn’t snag it away first, we might be chalking this unsettling piece of cinema as yet another Park City homecoming for the Borderline films crew. Ever since Afterschool was launched in Cannes back in 2008, their string of feature films Martha Marcy May Marlene (Sean Durkin), Antonio Campos‘ sophomore film Simon Killer, James White (Josh Mond) plus the award-winning short Mary Last Seen all got their starts at this January set fest. Production on Christine took place last May, so this will indeed to fit to go. Rebecca Hall...
