Contributions by women writers and directors to British TV have gone in the wrong direction over the past six years, according to an alarming report from the broadcaster-backed Diamond project.
Between 2016 and 2022, female British scribes saw their contributions to UK TV shows tumble by more than 10 percentage points to below one-third, while director contributions fell from 26.9% to 25.3%.
The disappointing new research comes after Diamond trawled through six years worth of diversity data. In 2020/21 in particular, the body found a “significant drop” in the proportion of female writers working in the industry, which it put down to the disproportionate impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly on those higher up the chain.
Female writers, directors and producer-directors were also much less likely than their male counterparts to be employed on peak-time programs. There was particularly bad representation for female writers in comedy (30.2%), while female directors fared badly in children’s (26.2%) and entertainment...

In the introduction for the upcoming book “Succession: Season Four: The Complete Scripts” (via Vulture), series creator Jesse Armstrong reveals a debate occurred on how to end the Emmy-winning HBO drama. The team could write one final season consisting of 10 episodes, or follow in the footsteps of “The Sopranos” and “Breaking Bad” by having an increased episode count and splitting up the final season into two parts. One of the crucial questions that came out of the final season of “Succession” was whether or not Logan Roy truly intended to leave his media empire in the hands of his oldest son, Kendall. Now the show’s creator, Jesse Armstrong, has definitively solved one piece of the puzzle.

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong has talked up the benefits of writers rooms for shows of “scale and length” as he threw his support behind the ongoing writers strike.
Armstrong was in conversation with journalist Marina Hyde on the final day of the Edinburgh TV Festival on Friday in the UK, and offered his analysis of writers rooms, which is one of the key sticking points for the AMPTP and WGA negotiations in the U.S.
“If budgets are available and we can get supported, they’re a great way to run some shows of scale and length, so I’m very supportive of the strike,” he said, adding that residuals and AI were issues the WGA was right to be concerned over.

Fremantle Banner Signs First-Look Deal With ‘August: Osage County’ Producer Patrick Daly’s Caledonia
Caledonia Productions, the banner of Patrick Daly, the theater and film director whose feature credits include August: Osage County, Una and Galveston, has signed a first-look deal with Passenger, headed by its founder Richard Brown (This England, True Detective, Catch-22).
The two-year deal with Passenger, which now sits within Fremantle’s Global Drama division, will see Daly and Brown collaborate on select existing Passenger and Caledonia film and television projects in addition to building a new slate of projects to co-produce. Fremantle will handle global distribution.
Both Passenger and Caledonia are based in New York and London.

Succession showrunner Jesse Armstrong has created some of the most despicable characters known to modern TV but he claimed this afternoon he “doesn’t enjoy seeing them suffer.”

Max has issued an apology and pledged to correct a credits error on the streaming service that grouped all writers, directors and producers from movies and TV shows together into one “Creators” category.

HBO’s “Succession” series finale will be 90 minutes long, according to one of the key members of its creative team. In an interview Wednesday, the show’s Emmy-winning composer Nicholas Britell confirmed that rumored run time to Variety.
