Exclusive: There’s some new brass at Cartuna. The Brooklyn-based animation house behind Loafy and the upcoming Magical Girl Friendship Squad has hired Mike Flavin as SVP, Head of Development. He most recently was VP Development at Gunpowder & Sky.
Flavin’s credits during his stint at WarnerMedia’s indie studio including the horror-mystery pic Summer of ’84, which premiered at Sundance in 2018.
“Development has always been a part of Cartuna’s DNA, and we’re excited to be doubling down on it,” Cartuna founder and CEO James Belfer said. “We feel strongly that animation should be treated as a medium, not a genre. The experience and expertise Mike brings from live-action development will help us expand upon this principle and redefine ‘adult animation.'”
Cartuna’s Loafy premiered on Comedy Central in August and its series Magical Girl Friendship Squad debuts Saturday on Syfy as part of the cable net’s Tzgz block.

‘The Eyeslicer’: Cult Variety Streaming Series Shifts Offline With New Festival and More — Exclusive
Cult variety TV show “The Eyeslicer” is gearing up for its second season, one that will move the streaming series into the terrestrial world with a brand new mini film festival, taking place in Brooklyn from September 14 to 17. The brainchild of creators Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell, the episodic series invites some of independent film’s most exciting directors to embrace their weird and experimental side in making a variety of short content, which is then weaved into thematic episodes.
The 13-episode Season 2 of “The Eyeslicer” will feature work from over 70 filmmakers, offerings that the co-creators describe as “a deep-dive into the strange, dark heart of our contemporary American hellscape, while also being an optimistic celebration of independent art-making within said hellscape.”
Starting with this new season, the internet will no longer be the series’ principal platform, but it will instead use a unique, zine-inspired mini-festival in Brooklyn and the...

SeriesFest has wrapped its fifth edition in Denver after handing out juried awards to 15 winners.
Beyond the pilot competition, highlights of the June 21-26 festival, inlcuded panels featuring Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos and a team of executives and collaborators from Shondaland. NBC fall drama Bluff City Law had its world premiere, and Starz rolled out the first episode of The Rook. Stevie Wonder and Usher performed at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside Denver, continuing the mostly TV-focused festival’s annual music undercurrent.
Currency, a drama imagining a “green-out” that threatens the capitalist system, captured Best Drama Pilot honors as well as the Audience Award. Best Comedy Pilot went to Brooklyn Moving Company, which depicts movers who burst into song and dance.
Jurors screened 53 pilots at the Sie FilmCenter, the arthouse multiplex that is the year-round home of Denver Film. (See the full list of winners below.)

For nearly 40 years now, Larry Fessenden has been a cornerstone of the independent horror scene. He’s directed over 20 projects, produced around 70 shorts and features, and has even performed in almost 100 cinematic endeavors. One of the more recent films that Fessenden has been involved with is Robert Mockler’s Like Me, in which he co-stars alongside Addison Timlin and also serves as a producer.
Written and directed by Mockler (who makes his feature debut here), Like Me follows the social media-obsessed Kiya (Timlin), who sets out to film uncomfortable situations (robberies, kidnappings, you name it) in an effort to gain more fame and notoriety amongst the online community at large. But after she takes things too far, Kiya is faced with the ugly truth that the quest for internet fame can come with a hefty price tag attached.

Rob Mockler's directorial debut, Like Me, has wrapped up production in and around New York and will now head into post. The film is a product of producer James Belfer's Dogfish Accelerator program. Fittingly the neo-noir flick about a girl who documents her crime spree on social media was pitched to Belfer via a Tweet. Cult fave Larry Fessenden is executive producing through Glass Eye Pix and also has a role in the film. Emerging genre fave Jeremy Gardner also stars with lead actress Addison Timlin. Timlin (Fallen, 2014's The Town That Dreaded Sundown) plays the lead role of Kiya, a discontented loner who documents her own crime spree through social media, which provokes a disturbing Internet following. Larry Fessenden (In A Valley Of Violence, you're...

Last year, I did a lengthly profile on Dogfish Pictures’ inaugural Accelerator program, which adapts a start up financing model to the independent film landscape. Dogfish equips each of its selected participants with seed financing and an office space where they’ll develop their product(s) over the course of nine-weeks, with added input from mentors. The program is capped off by a demo day, in which a member from each team pitches to a room full of investors, industry personnel and lowly journalists like myself. Applications are now open for the second edition of Accelerator through August 8, but this year, James Belfer and Co. are widening the field. “Content […]...

Us producer Dogfish has launched the second cycle of Dogfish Accelerator offering networking support and $10,000 in financing and business development to film-makers and all content creators.
The accelerator will run over nine-weeks from September 22-November 19 at the company’s headquarters in New York.
At the end of the programme, Dogfish will host an investor Demo Day where each venture will be showcased to potential investors.
Last year’s inaugural cycle selected eight teams of content creators out of nearly 500 applications from around the world.
Selected candidates from the first intake developed a digital comedy brand, a 3D transmedia children’s film and tablet video game and a feature that will incorporate an event tour, live music, shareable GIFs and experimental media.
“Content is content, no matter what form it takes,” said Dogfish CEO James Belfer (pictured). “We’re looking for the next generation of creators who want to make an explosion with their art.”

Not long after he founded Dogfish Pictures in 2009, producer James Belfer sensed an industry-wide disconnect between content creation and return on investment. Filmmakers, he gleaned, were concerned with short-term assets, agreeing to sell their film to distributors for a fixed sum that was a mere fraction of the eventual profit. In order to capture the full value of their content, filmmakers would need a new set of marketing tools and a fair bit of elbow grease. Park City, Ut – January 23, 2013 – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired North American rights to Prince Avalanche after its rapturously received Sunday premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The new film from writer/director David Gordon Green, Prince Avalanche stars Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch, and was produced by Lisa Muskat, Derrick Tseng, Craig Zobel (director of Magnolia’s 2012 release Compliance), James Belfer and David Gordon Green. Driven by striking performances from Rudd and Hirsch, Prince Avalanche is an offbeat comedy about two men painting traffic lines on a desolate country highway that’s been ravaged by wildfire. Against this dramatic setting, beautifully shot by frequent Green collaborator Tim Orr, the men bicker and joke with each other, eventually developing an unlikely friendship. Funny, meditative and at times surreal, Prince Avalanche features a moving score by Explosions in the Sky and David Wingo, and...
