December is the most popular month for charitable giving by Americans – accounting for about a third of all donations made per year. Call it the spirit of the holidays, repeated viewings of A Christmas Carol, or a rush to get in tax-deductible gifts before the calendar year runs out.
That makes this a particularly timely moment to encounter one of this year’s Oscar-contending documentaries, UnCharitable, directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal. It argues we are applying misguided standards to charities – monitoring their overhead expenses like hawks and shaming any nonprofits that dare to spend money on staff salaries or fundraising.
“The movie is demanding that we look at it in a new way, really,” Gyllenhaal said in a recent Q&a (you can watch the conversation below). Under the existing paradigm, charitable nonprofits have learned to operate bare bones style, at the expense of solving the social problems they ostensibly are meant to address.

Abramorama has acquired North American distribution rights to “Uncharitable,” a documentary about the roles that charities and non-profits play in society. The indie distributor will open the film on Sept. 22 in New York at Angelika’s Village East and Sept. 29 in Los Angeles at Laemmle’s Royale before beginning its North American rollout.
“Uncharitable” was directed and produced by Stephen Gyllenhaal, the director of “Waterland” and “Dangerous Woman.” It features the humanitarian activist Dan Pallotta, whose Ted Talk “The Way We Think About Charity is Dead Wrong” was viewed more than 17 million times and has inspired conversations about how charities can be more effective and how we can support them.
An opportunity to address our own bias and overhaul the way we think about charities, the film expands the conversation including interviews with Scott Harrison (Charity Water), Dorri McWhorter (President and CEO Ymca of Chicago, Advisor First Women’s Bank), Steve Nardizzi,...

Between her shows, her network, her magazine, her movies and everything else that falls under her empire, Oprah Winfrey has long been one of the busiest people in entertainment. It all got to her recently, she told “Access Hollywood,” when she interviewed “Kony 2012″ creator Jason Russell the day after filming emotional funeral scenes for “The Butler.” Russell suffered a breakdown of his own, famously running naked through the San Diego streets while ranting about the devil following the tremendous viral success of his “Kony 2012″ video. After his return to sanity, Winfrey interviewed him for her “Oprah’s Next Chapter.

Oprah Winfrey's work ethic is unparalleled, which has been both a blessing and a curse for the TV titan. Speaking to Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson on Tuesday, Sept. 17, the 59-year-old star revealed that she nearly suffered a nervous breakdown in 2012. While filming Lee Daniels' The Butler last year, Winfrey was in the midst of trying to revitalize her "struggling" TV channel, Own. It wasn't until she interviewed Kony 2012 director Jason Russell for an episode of Oprah's Next Chapter that she realized she was burning the candle at both ends. (Russell suffered a very public meltdown in March 2012 when he stripped naked and stopped traffic in San Diego, Calif. Police intervened, and he was taken...

Oprah Winfrey isn't immune to her own network having problems. While she was shooting her recent film "The Butler," she was also juggling conducting celebrity interviews for "Oprah's Next Chapter" and handling her "struggling network." When she finally interview Kony 2012's Jason Russell and talked about his public breakdown, she realized she was going through one of her own.
"In the beginning, it was just sort of speeding and a kind of numbness and going from one thing to the next thing to the next thing. I will tell you when I realized that I thought, 'All right, if I don't calm down I'm gonna be in serious trouble,'" Oprah tells Access Hollywood. "I was in the middle of doing voiceovers, you know? And I remember closing my eyes in between each page because looking at the page and the words at the same time was too much stimulation for my brain.

Last March, Jason Russell's Kony 2012 video inspired and moved people by the millions to raise awareness and funds to find and stop warlord Joseph Kony. Shortly after Russell became a household name, he suffered a public meltdown and was seen naked, ranting, and running through the streets of San Diego. The incident all but killed the momentum of Invisible Children's cause.
This weekend, Russell opened up, speaking candidly about the unfortunate circumstances in order to clear the way for Invisible Children's revamped effort and new 30-minute film. Jason Russell would have probably been content to be known simply as the founder of Invisible Children and the creator of the "Kony 2012" film that hoped to open eyes about Ugandan guerilla leader Joseph Kony. But after a very public meltdown that saw him naked in the streets of San Diego -- reportedly masturbating -- he's become known for something else entirely. He sat down for his first interview since that infamous incident on "Oprah's Next Chapter."

"Kony 2012" director Jason Russell is set to finally break his silence regarding his very public breakdown in San Diego, Calif., during an upcoming interview with Oprah.
The co-founder of Invisible Children, the group behind the extremely viral "Kony 2012" video, was detained by police and eventually checked into a psychiatric hospital in March after he was found naked, disrupting traffic and screaming incoherently on a busy street corner.
The 33-year-old and his wife, Danica, will talk about the incident, which was initially chalked up to dehydration and a brief, reactive psychosis, on an episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter," set to air Oct. 7th.
Oprah's Own network teased a bit of the interview during Sunday's sit down between the talk show superstar and Stephen Colbert, and an excerpt of the transcript was also released to TMZ.
Oprah: "What do you remember, Jason?"
Jason: "I remember me flipping off cars.

You can tell a lot about the film just from the opening titles; too many means the film is a small independent piece, none means the film was produced by the distributor and is therefore a brainless blockbuster, Weinstein means the film will be trying to get an Oscar etc.
Sometimes, as the lights go down and people in the cinema begin to hush for the next couple of hours, a name in the titles will catch your eye. Not an actor’s or director’s name, but the name of one of the film’s backers, its presence shocking because you can’t believe they’re actually a production company.
At the start of the age of cinema, all sorts of start ups from bizarre origins existed – Universal may have a hundred years of brilliant films, but it all came from clothing store owner Carl Laemmle’s desire to make a large profit – however,...

If the Kony 2012 campaign had its way, the world would have woken up to cities covered in posters on Saturday. In this guest post, Adam Ferrier discusses why it didn’t happen.
Kony 2012 has made the world a sadder, more cynical place. Kony 2012 has harnessed the powers of social media and advertising, blended them with the worst of evangelical christianity, and duped the world.
I’ve been pretty negative about the campaign since I first heard about it, here, here and here. Mumbrella has asked me to put a point of view forward as to why it this campaign failed – here it is.
Kony 2012 is advertising at its worst. At its worst advertising can make the most ridiculous of products seem irresistible. This type of advertising was based about creating a desirable image around an unsubstantiated product. However, this type of advertising thankfully gets found out,...

"Why you trying to trash talk our theatrical release?!" One of my favorite TV shows that has consistently been one of my favorites is South Park, but I don't get the opportunity to mention it much on here. I caught last night's episode and, as expected, it was a hilarious yet clever episode tackling two current issues: Harvey Weinstein's Bully doc and fight with the MPAA, and the Kony 2012 video Jason Russell incident in San Diego. There was a key moment midway through about movies (involving a studio exec bullying people) and it ends on a very poignant note regarding distribution. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to share this. This is specifically the scene I'm referring to, but you can see their entire "Bully" episode online free here. This is why I love this show. Nonprofit group Invisible Children is back with a new video, titled "Kony 2012: Part II -- Beyond Famous." Officials at human rights group Invisible Children have released a sequel to Jason Russell's stirring Kony 2012 Internet video - and this time the troubled director doesn't feature.
The documentarian, who is a co-founder of the group and narrated the original film, hit the headlines last month when he was arrested for public drunkenness and indecency in San Diego, California - and he is currently seeking help after being diagnosed with brief psychosis.
Charity bosses and his family insist the public acclaim and pressure placed on Russell following the success of his call-to-arms video, which exposed the brutality of Uganda's Lords Resistance Army leader Joseph Kony, was too much for the filmmaker to cope with.
Now, as Invisible Children officials prepare for their 20 April Cover The Night event - when supporters around the world will post up billboards and stickers featuring Kony's face - they have boosted the international hunt for the brutal rebel leader by releasing a second Kony 2012 film online.
The new video addresses criticisms fired at the non-profit organisation in recent weeks since the release of the original, which was viewed over 100 million times on YouTube.com.
Embattled Invisible Children CEO Ben Keesey reveals the new video was made to answer questions fired at him by supporters and critics alike.
It also features a new plea for viewers to urge politicians to push for Kony's arrest and then volunteer on 20 April for the planned day of action.

Jason Biggs has been insulted by Invisibe Children, the advocacy group behind ‘Kony 2012′ filmmaker Jason Russell’s popular ‘Stop Kony’ viral campaign, TMZ is reporting. In response to the ‘American Reunion’ actor parodying the director, a spokesperson for Invisible Children questioned Bigg’s celebrity status by saying “Who’s Jason Biggs? Was he famous once or something?” The insult comes after Biggs appeared on Chicago’s Wgn-tv station on Wednesday with his ‘American Reunion’ co-star Seann William Scott to promote the third sequel in the original ‘American Pie’ franchise. A surveillance camera in the station’s hallway captured Biggs rolling around on the floor, tearing off his clothes and then running naked. When security [ Read More ]...

When it comes to making a mockery of the semi-disgraced viral-video sensation of the moment....everyone's a critic. Actor Jason Biggs recently parodied Invisible Children co-founder and creator of the viral activism sensation "Kony 2012" Jason Russell's crazy, naked street-corner rampage in Chicago. Doing so left a sour taste in the mouths of Russell's peers, according to The Hollywood Reporter....Read more...

Kony 2012 filmmaker Jason Russell's epic freak-out inspired Jason Biggs to reenact the meltdown for laughs -- but not everyone is finding Biggs' parody funny. Jesse Derris, a spokesperson for Invisible Children -- the advocacy group behind Russell's mega-viral "Stop Kony" campaign -- tells THR, "It's a little surprising that someone would be so cavalier about a serious medical issue just to drum up publicity for a sequel. His last successful movie was 11 years ago, so we're not worried about this one." In a statement to TMZ, Derris responded with another jab at the actor's celebrity status, asking: "Who's

Miss me kids? I missed you, though you're always in great hands with Louis, who was kind to fill in for me on top of his other duties. I try not to do it to him often. Of course, I'm doing it again in a couple weeks. Remember when I went last year and spoke to OUTLaw at Washington & Lee Law School last year? They're having a debate between Maggie Gallagher and Andrew Sullivan April 4th at 6Pm and invited me back. Plus it gets me some rare face time with our fearless leader, Dennis.
But on to things that matter, like the fact that Smash has been renewed for a second season. It's uneven, but I really am hopeful for the show. One major change is that creator/showrunner Theresa Rebeck won't be back, but will live on in Debra Messing's character, who was loosely based on her.

In case you haven’t seen it, here’s Kony 2012, the half-hour documentary by the organization Invisible Children that’s swept the Internet this week. It’s about Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army, which has been terrorizing the region around northern Uganda for a quarter century; a particular emphasis is on Kony’s notorious practice of kidnapping children and forcing them into military service.
The film was posted on YouTube last Monday, and as of this writing it’s chalked up 62,172,848 views. Those kinds of numbers are impressive, and the people at Invisible Children, including director Jason Russell and two other American filmmakers who helped shoot in Africa, must be pleased at the film’s level of response. I first heard about it Wednesday in an email from a friend, a mother of young children, urging everyone in her contact list to watch the film and carefully...

A first-person documentary/advocacy film about a Central African rebel leader became the fastest-spreading viral video in history this week. Published Monday, it had almost 59 million views on YouTube as of Friday night, a remarkable accomplishment, and far more viewers than even popular reality series and documentaries get. That has drawn many people to the cause outlined in the film, but it has also created a backlash. Produced by Jason Russell, who co-founded Invisible Children,...

Filmmaker Jason Russell has become an overnight sensation with his video "Kony 2012," which documents the inhumane actions of Joseph Kony (head of the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda, aka Lra). The filmmaker stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Friday, where he spoke about his Invisible Children campaign and what he hopes will happen in Uganda.
"It is a movement that is beyond us. It is the youth of the world waking up... they've been told, 'You have potential, you have social network, you're powerful,' but they hadn't realized what that means yet. And now they do," Russell said ...

Jason Russell set his humanitarian sights on Uganda years ago—and now, Hollywood is following suit. The Kony 2012 director and cofounder of Invisible Children Inc. sat down with E! News' Catt Sadler today for an exclusive interview about his foundation's latest efforts to put an end to the abduction of children by the army of rebel leader Joseph Kony in war-torn Central Africa. "This is about human beings waking up to their potential and their power around the world, and uniting for justice," Russell says of the campaign to bring Kony to justice. Kony 12, a 29-minute video encapsulating nine years of research and detailing the horrors of the situation in Uganda, has already been...

The film Kony 2012 premiered Monday March 5, at 12 p.m. Pst. By noon Thursday, more than 35 million views had registered on YouTube. With the help of Facebook and Twitter, Jason Russell's documentary has even captured the attention of celebrities including Ryan Gosling, Rihanna, Oprah and Justin Bieber. The slickly produced 30-minute video follows Russell's efforts since 2006 to raise awareness around the world about Uganda's guerrilla leader Joseph Kony, whose terrifying actions have landed him the top spot of the International Criminal Court's most wanted list. Kony's rebel group has kidnapped thousands of children, turning the boys into child soldiers and the girls into sex slaves.

Over the past 24 hours, my Facebook newsfeed has been swamped with a single subject: Invisible Children’s Kony 2012 / Stop Kony campaign.
The campaign film was uploaded to Youtube on the 5th of March. Since then, #StopKony has been a trending topic on Twitter – both in Australia and worldwide, for several days. At time of writing YouTube listed the number of views at 11,624,969, which is likely to be shy of the actual total.
This is a phenomenal success by anybody’s standards. But what has made this single issue – which I think it’s fair to say was relatively far from most Australians’ minds until a day or two ago, such a hot topic – and why is the campaign such a viral hit?
Typically the videos that generate the most hits are short and funny. The Stop Kony video is just over 29 minutes long, and it’s heart rending from start to finish.

This is not your average kitten and pratfall viral video. Sometimes, YouTube can make a difference. A half hour documentary produced by filmmaker Jason Russell for the Invisible Children charity took the web by storm on Tuesday night, spreading the word about Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army leader Joseph Kony and his brutal practice of forcing young children into war. The video is striking in its uncensored look at the deplorable conditions faced by the young soldiers, as well as its juxtaposition of interviews with Russell's jovial, well-adjusted young son and with a teenager named Jacob, an imperiled Ugandan who
