After watching him play the fan-favorite Steve Harrington for years in the pop-culture phenomenon that goes by the name of Stranger Things, you probably didn’t imagine you’d see Joe Keery as a simpleton with a heavy Southern accent. But Keir O’Donnell’s debut feature, titled Marmalade, clearly proves that Keery wants to break out of that image. His very recent role in the fifth season of Fargo can testify to that as well. And if his performance in Marmalade is anything to go by, then it can be said that Keery is very much on the right track.
I generally take pride in figuring out the twist beforehand in many films, but Marmalade has managed to beat me in that game. Neither me nor FBI agent Otis saw it coming, and that’s where the film wins. Initially appearing to be a run-of-the-mill heist thriller along the lines of Bonnie and Clyde,...

Actor turned director Keir O’Donnell’s first feature behind the camera is a primary coloured effort with some smart plot twists
Although largely comic in tone, this frothy thriller is obviously modelled on classic films noir, with their tales of betrayal and cunning, gullible heroes tricked into crime by femmes fatales, and the ever-present backbeat of quiet economic desperation. But Keir O’Donnell, a character actor making his writing-directing debut, has juiced up the formula with a palette of poppy primary colours and bright stabs of pink, and an ironic, self-mocking tone. That should help this slip down easy with new-generation viewers who may never have seen such classics as The Postman Always Rings Twice or Double Indemnity, let alone later remakes or homages like Body Heat or Blue Velvet.
It also helps that O’Donnell has cast Gen-z-star-on-the-rise Joe Keery (Steve from Stranger Things) as protagonist Baron, a guileless poor...

Thanks to the Netflix series Stranger Things, I have been a fan of Joe Keery for over seven years already, and thanks to the Prime Video streaming series Daisy Jones & The Six – which drew inspiration from the story of Fleetwood Mac – I recently became a fan of Camila Morrone. So it’s fun to see Keery and Morrone together in the upcoming crime thriller Marmalade, which is set to reach theatres and VOD on February 9th. With a month to go before that date arrives, a trailer for Marmalade has been released online and can be seen in the embed above.
The feature directorial debut of Keir O’Donnell, Marmalade is said to be “an edge-of-the-seat crime-tinged romance tale” that follows recently incarcerated Baron (Keery) who strikes up a friendship with cellmate Otis, a man with a well-versed history of prison breaks. A new trailer has landed for the edge-of-the-seat crime-tinged romance ‘Marmalade,’ featuring Joe Keery, Camila Morrone and Aldis Hodge.
Recently incarcerated Baron (Keery) strikes up a friendship with cellmate Otis (Hodge), a man with a well-versed history of prison breaks. As the pair hatch an escape plan together, Baron recalls the story of how he met Marmalade (Morrone), the love of his life, and their “Bonnie and Clyde” style scheme to rob a bank in order to care for his sick mother and give the couple the life they’ve always dreamed of.
Keir O’Donnell (Wedding Crashers) makes his feature directorial debut. Wayne Duvall, Susan Brava, Hans Christopher and Andrew E. Wheeler also star.

God save the audience for “God Save the Queens,” a muddled drag artist-focused comedy with zero laughs that also features some implausible dramatic interludes.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which popularized and mainstreamed drag for the masses, has now been running for 14 seasons; the show has become a sort of institution, still zealously watched and dissected by fans, but drag artists find themselves in an increasingly awkward position in the current landscape of heated debates on gender and sex. That awkwardness is sometimes the very tentative subject of “God Save the Queens,” which retreats into vague uplift whenever a truly serious side of this issue might emerge.
First-time writer-director Jordan Danger attempts to center the film on four struggling drag artists who are sent to a therapy retreat to work out their issues with each other, but this lame plot device kicks in about midway through the movie, and this sometimes makes...

Universal Pictures has debuted the trailer for animation ‘The Bad Guys.’
Never have there been five friends as infamous as The Bad Guys—dashing pickpocket Mr. Wolf, seen-it-all safecracker Mr. Snake, chill master-of-disguise Mr. Shark, short-fused “muscle” Mr. Piranha and sharp[1]tongued expert hacker Ms. Tarantula, aka “Webs.”
But when, after years of countless heists and being the world’s most-wanted villains, the gang is finally caught, Mr. Wolf brokers a deal (that he has no intention of keeping) to save them all from prison: The Bad Guys will go good.
Under the tutelage of their mentor Professor Marmalade, an arrogant (but adorable!) guinea pig, The Bad Guys set out to fool the world that they’ve been transformed. Along the way, though, Mr. Wolf begins to suspect that doing good for real may give him what he’s always secretly longed for acceptance. So when a new villain threatens the city,...
