New Delhi, April 30 (Ians) The seasoned Mairaj Ahmad Khan and the up-and-coming Ganemat Sekhon combined effectively to win gold in the Skeet Mixed Team event in the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (Issf) World Cup Shotgun in Cairo, Egypt, giving India their first medal of the competition.
The Indian duo overcame Mexicans Luis Raul Gallardo Oliveros and Gabriela Rodriguez 6-0 in the gold medal match. Italy took bronze through their crack pair of two-time World Championship silver medallist Simona Scocchetti and Rio Olympic champion Gabrielle Rossetti.
Mairaj, who won his fifth senior Issf medal on the day, was in brilliant form in the 30-team qualification round shooting 74/75 to help the Indian duo shoot a combined 143 out of 150. That helped them reach the title decider in the top position after they won a shoot-off with the Mexicans 4-3, as the latter had also finished with a score of 143.

The trailer for Apple TV+’s Raymond & Ray opens with the revelation a father’s last wish was that his sons dig his grave, which is odd but also strangely moving. Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke star as half-brothers who weren’t exactly close to each other or their dad before he died, but the trailer teases their relationship will transform as they come to terms with their father’s death.
Maribel Verdú (Now and Then), Sophie Okonedo (Slow Horses), Tom Bower (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie), and Vondie Curtis Hall (For the People) also star in writer/director Rodrigo Garcia’s new dramedy. Exclusive: Apple Studios’ Raymond and Ray has added Maribel Verdú and Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo to the cast alongside Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke. The pic is now filming in Virginia.
The Rodrigo García-directed movie follows half-brothers Raymond (McGregor) and Ray (Hawke) who have lived in the shadow of a terrible father. Somehow, they still each have a sense of humor, and his funeral is a chance for them to reinvent themselves. There’s anger, there’s pain, there’s folly, there might be love, and there’s definitely grave-digging.
Verdú will star as Lucia, a partner and caretaker to Raymond and Ray’s father. Her character is described as one having the innate strength and alluring personality that will mend the broken family in the wake of the father’s death. Okonedo plays Kiera, a no-nonsense nurse and a source of comfort for Raymond and Ray’s father in his final days.

Alfonso Cuarón, who won an Oscar for directing his 2018 Netflix film, “Roma,” is moving to one of the streaming services’ many new competitors, signing an overall TV deal with Apple.
Under terms of the multiyear deal, Cuarón will develop television projects exclusively for Apple TV+ through his production company Esperanto Filmoj. The upcoming streaming service from the tech giant will become available on Nov. 1, and cost $4.99 a month.
The deal adds another major producer to Apple’s stable as the company prepares to throw its hat in the ring of the highly competitive streaming game. Cuarón joins Oprah Winfrey, Sesame Workshop, Peanuts owner Dhx Media, as well as producers like Justin Lin and Jason Katims at Apple.

Alfonso Cuarón has set a multi-year overall deal at Apple, Variety has learned.
Under the deal, the multi-hyphenate will develop television projects exclusively for Apple’s upcoming streaming service, Apple TV Plus. Cuarón’s long-time producing partner, Gabriela Rodriguez, will run day to day operations at his London-based production company, Esperanto Filmoj. He will still maintain his deal with Anonymous Content and will partner with them on certain projects in addition to continuing to work with other collaborators.
Any projects to come out of the deal would mark some of the first television Cuarón has been a part of during his career, having worked primarily in film. He previously co-created the NBC drama “Believe,” which aired for one season in 2014. He also wrote and directed for the Mexican anthology series “La Hora Marcada.” It was announced in 2017 that Cuarón was developing a horror series titled “Ascension.”

Apple has finalized a multi-year overall deal with Alfonso Cuarón, the Oscar-winning Roma and Gravity filmmaker. Under the pact, which has been in the works for some time, Cuarón through his production company Esperanto Filmoj will develop TV projects exclusively for Apple TV+, the tech giant’s new streaming service that is prepping for its November 1 launch.
No other details have been made available, but we hear the deal spans three years and is lucrative — in the high eight-figure range and potentially nine figures depending on how much gets made.
Cuarón’s TV development will be exclusive to Apple+. On some of it, he is expected to collaborate with longtime partner Anonymous Content where the filmmaker has a non-exclusive deal. He also plans to team up with other creative collaborators. Cuarón’s longtime producing partner Gabriela Rodriguez will run Esperanto Filmoj’s day-to-day operations out of its London headquarters.

Filmmakers have been making message movies since the birth of the art form, as Hollywood has long embraced the notion of observing progressive social change through mass entertainment. From some of the earliest talkies to outright propaganda pieces, to the Stanley Kramer dramas of the ’50s and ’60s and the resurgence at the studio level in the ’80s and ’90s, storytellers continue to find ways to embed strong personal and cultural statements within their motion pictures. And while many artists will argue that every film is a message movie, it’s clear that 2018 produced a bunch of narratives that spoke louder than others.
One of the most incisive and fierce was “Blindspotting,” a Sundance favorite from director Carlos Lopez Estrada and the writing/acting team of Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal. The provocative narrative pivots on best friends who have learned to navigate the rough streets of Oakland, Calif., only...

“Roma,” Alfonso Cuaron’s deeply personal coming-of-age drama, is also a love letter to Mexico City. The sprawling metropolis — its cobblestoned streets, fading movie palaces, and lush parks — is practically a central character in the story of a family grappling with love and loss.
Perhaps that’s the reason that “Roma” has been passionately embraced by Mexican audiences even as the country’s two largest theater chains, Cinepolis and Cinemex, refuse to screen the movie. The companies object to the fact that the movie is premiering on Netflix within weeks of its theatrical debut — a stance being echoed by major U.S. exhibitors such as AMC and Regal.
However, independent chains throughout the country have been clamoring to book the film. “Roma” is currently screening in nearly 100 Mexican theaters, double the number that the film’s producers expected would offer the movie. It’s also nearly as big a footprint...

So far the film awards season has largely been shaped by box office dollars from the moviegoing public and assessments from committees of critics, journalists and other professionals. The actual industry has only just begun to weigh in, starting with last week’s Annie Awards nominations announcement.
The Screen Actors Guild will add its collective voice Wednesday with a list of performance nominations, and next week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will narrow the field in nine categories with a bundle of shortlists. After the new year, other guilds and organizations representing various disciplines will join the party. But before that whirlwind takes hold, it’s high time for a stab at predicting the nominees in the Academy’s 21 feature film categories.

“Roma’s” highly acclaimed whirlwind tour took another stop in New York City on Tuesday night for a special screening for a star-studded crowd.
Anne Hathaway, Bette Midler, Zosia Mamet, Jim Jarmusch, Nick Kroll, Chris Meloni, Lee Pace, Kathleen Turner, David Chase, and Tom Colicchio were just a few of the stars who attended the showing at the DGA Theater.
Producer Gabriela Rodriguez smiled as she told Variety about the affair, “I am just really excited. The feedback we have been getting has been so nice. We have had an amazing festival run with wonderful reactions from around the planet from Tokyo to Turkey to Latin America and different cities in Europe.”
Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos stood proudly for photos with cast members Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, and Nancy Garcia before the movie rolled. (Director Alfonso Cuaron was noticeably absent due to a personal emergency.)

Because “Roma” is based on Alfonso Cuaron‘s own experiences growing up in Mexico City in the 1970s, sound editor Sergio Diaz spent a lot of time with the director talking about “his memories.” Together, they wanted to weave together “all the specific sounds in that period,” which required Diaz to do his “own research.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

In many ways, “Roma” — filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron‘s intimate reflection on the ups and downs of his ’70s middle-class childhood in Mexico City — is testing some untapped waters of awards season protocol. For one, it could become the first film produced by a streaming outlet, namely Netflix, to get a shot at Best Picture. To help achieve that goal it will get a run in select theaters beginning November 21 and is expected to play in 20 countries before it heads online on December 14.

Will “Roma” make history at the Oscars? Netflix released a new trailer for the critically acclaimed film on November 13 (watch it above). Inspired by director Alfonso Cuaron‘s own childhood in Mexico City, the film opens on November 21 for limited theatrical engagements, and then it premieres on the streaming service on December 14. It’s one of the top contenders for Best Picture according to our latest odds, but it would be an unprecedented champ.
Netflix has made strides at showbiz awards in recent years since it started investing in original content. Perhaps still smarting from the Election Night booing he received for his critical comments of President Trump during the Israeli Film Festival, BlacKkKlansman producer Jason Blum, in a tone of barely controlled ire, briefly summarized how he characterized the message of Spike Lee’s acclaimed film about an African-American police officer’s infiltration of the Ku Klux Klan.
“To me, the message of BlacKkKlansman, which I tell people when they’ve asked me, is very simple: Racism is stupid,” started Blum, “and people who are racist are stupid, and people in the Kkk are stupid racists, period. That’s what the movie is about.”
Taking up Blum’s mantle during the “Producing Masterclass II” panel at the Producers Guild of America’s Produced By: New York conference, the film’s co-screenwriter, Kevin Willmott, added, “You would think we wouldn’t have to say that!”
The session, led by Oscar-winning producer Bruce Cohen, had veered from a discussion about the collaborative visions that led to some of this year’s top films to one asking why these films were so necessary in a divided America. Gabriela Rodriguez and Yalitza Aparicio, producer and star of Roma, addressed the timely themes of Alfonso Cuarón’s semi-autobiographical film of life in Mexico City in the early 1970s. “Our movie speaks to class diversity and ethnic diversity and strong women characters lead the story,” Rodriguez said while Blum and Willmott focused the conversation squarely on the president’s influence, and why Lee chose to close his film with footage from the 2017 white supremacist riot in Charlottesville, Virginia.
“It’s a really historic time we’re living in,” said Willmott. “People will look back and say, wow that’s when it happened, that’s when it was either going to go to hell or come back….We have a nationalist as the leader of the United States; he’s demonized whole groups of people every day. This is not normal and it’s a scary time.”
With Blum having offered his admiration for the film’s ability to balance humor with terror, Willmott, who said he calls President Trump “King Tang”, explained, “We tried to…make something humorous that’s not funny. With hate, you have to get as close to the hate as you can and by doing that, you reveal the absurdity and that’s where the humor lies.” Willmott added that the hatred promoted by Kkk leader David Duke in the film is also, “what’s happening now. That kind of hate has become part of the mainstream and it’s in the White House. It’s bizarre—if we had tried to write this, people would have said you can’t expect us to buy this crap. And yet it’s happened.”
Striking a more hopeful note in a panel that also featured an inspired tale from Crazy Rich Asians producer John Penotti, and hilarious commentary from costar Ronny Chieng, Mary Poppins Returns star Emily Blunt said, “What I love about [Mary] is she’s a woman who can get things done and brings order to chaos. She mends the cracks in people so they can rediscover something about themselves, and in the world now, where people are becoming more self-serving and not allowing the idea of community and we feel the divide, here’s a movie that can be a great unifier—at Christmas.”
Admitting that the current strain of anger in the country “is the reason for the film,” Mary Poppins Returns producer/director Rob Marshall said, “This move tells you how to look at life from a different point of view. [It] returns to this kind of light in a dark world.”...

"With Alfonso, there's always hidden challenges," Gabriela Rodriguez told The Hollywood Reporter's Producer Roundtable of working with Roma director Alfonso Cuaron. "Now they feel normal to me. I don't have any point of comparison. I don't know how the other directors treat their producers.
"I tried to tell him, 'No, we can't do this,' a lot, but he always gets his way, somehow," Rodriguez said. She's been working on Cuaron's projects since 2006, but Roma was her first time in a producer slot.

Alfonso Cuarón, writer-director-producer of the anticipated Netflix film Roma, got a laugh from the Contenders audience Saturday at the DGA Theater when moderator Joe Utichi asked him about “discovering” Yalitza Aparicio, an aspiring teacher who appeared in the film in her first screen role.
“I didn’t find her — she was always there,” Cuarón said. “You were lost? I was very lucky to meet with her.”
He added he remains mystified by Hollywood’s frequent declaration that it has “discovered” new talent. “It’s like Europeans [who] find America,” he joked.

The awards shows will continue until morale improves. That’s good news for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” which got off to a great start by winning both Best Actress for Olivia Colman and a Special Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and now leads all movies with 13 nominations at the British Independent Film Awards. Following it are “American Animals” (11), “Beast” (10), and “You Were Never Really Here” (8); all are nominated for the top prize, as is “Disobedience.”
Also well represented is Rachel Weisz, whose roles in “Disobedience” and “The Favourite” have her up for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively; her co-stars in both films — Olivia Colman and Emma Stone in “The Favourite,” Rachel McAdams in “Disobedience” — are all nominated as well.
This year’s Bifa ceremony takes place on Sunday, December 2 in London. Here’s the full list of nominees:

In recent years, the Scad Savannah Film Festival has become a favorite Oscar season stop for stars and filmmakers. Unlike the Toronto Intl. Film Festival or Sundance, it’s not a frenzied hotbed of deals and world premieres, but it has its own quaint charms that reflect the historic 285-year-old city where it unspools.
“It’s one of those deep indie-film-loving communities that are as passionate about watching movies as it is about making them,” says director Jason Reitman, who shot “The Front Runner” in the city, and will be at the fest for a gala screening, along with star Hugh Jackman. It’s a return trip for Reitman, who screened “Tully” at the fest last year.
The festival’s passion for film is driven by the students and the faculty of the Savannah College of Art and Design (Scad), who run the event.
“Scad is the festival,” says president and founder Paula Wallace.
