Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group’s Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy announced today that the Oscar-winning team behind the nearly $6 billion blockbuster Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are reuniting to produce two new films from Tolkien’s Middle-earth for Warner Bros. The first of the two films, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, will be directed by and star Andy Serkis, with Walsh and Boyens set to write the screenplay, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou (Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim). New Line’s new animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is moving from its April 12, 2024 release date to Dec. 13 next year.
The move stems from a chain-reaction of Warner Bros re-dating today, spurred by Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two going from Nov. 3 this year to March 15, 2024, which then pushed that financier and producer’s other title, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire from that date to April 12, 2024. Dune: Part Two had to move had to shift on account of the unavailability of its cast to promote during the actors strike.
War of the Rohirrim will now face off on its new December date against Sony’s reboot of The Karate Kid.
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original New Line Lord of the Rings trilogy. Those Peter Jackson movies, in addition to his Hobbit trilogy,...

The Duffer Brothers are staying strong at Netflix with a new supernatural series. But instead of teenagers leading the narrative, a group of senior citizens will make up The Boroughs. Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), the mystery series is set in a seemingly idyllic retirement community, where an unlikely group of residents team up to thwart an otherworldly force threatening their livelihood. The premise sounds like a more sinister Cocoon, and we all know how much the Duffers and even Addiss and Matthews love '80s references. As we wait for more updates on the show’s production, here’s everything we know about The Boroughs so far.

After the huge success of "Stranger Things," it's no surprise Netflix would want to stay in business with the Duffer Brothers. And as that show heads toward its highly anticipated conclusion, the duo is revving up future projects for the streamer.
When Netflix signed Matt and Ross Duffer to a nine-figure deal last year, one of the projects they were attached to was a mysterious science fiction series from creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the guys behind Netflix's beloved, canceled-too-soon fantasy epic "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance." Today, we finally have more information about that project.
The eight-episode series is called "The Boroughs," and it sounds like it could be tonally similar to "Stranger Things" despite having a completely different setting and group of characters. Here's the official logline:

Exclusive: Following the record-breaking release of the two final episodes of Stranger Things’ Season 4, creators Matt & Ross Duffer have formed Upside Down Pictures and recommitted to Netflix with several new projects. To run Upside Down, they’ve hired Hilary Leavitt, a vet of BBC America and MRC who most recently ran her own Hulu-based Blazer banner. Series she helped develop include Orphan Black, Ozark, The Great and Shining Girls.
Borrowing the company name from their juggernaut series, The Duffers will continue to lean into the formula that has been a propulsive force in Stranger Things. The brothers said the new company will be guided by the goal to create the kind of stories that inspired them growing up, “stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism.”

Exclusive: Brian Cox, Gaia Wise and Miranda Otto are just some of the names in the voice cast for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation’s upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
The movie centers around the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan, a character from the J.R.R. Tolkien book’s appendix. Succession actor Cox will provide the voice of that protagonist.
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg – a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Warner Bros. has asserted that it still rules Middle-earth when it comes to film rights to “The Lord of the Rings.”
The studio has publicly stated its control over film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic fantasy trilogy amid rumblings in the industry that a clutch of “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” rights are being shopped by longtime owner, the Saul Zaentz Co.
The Zaentz Co. and Warner Bros. are in the middle of a private mediation process to help settle their differences about whether the studio has met its obligations to hold on to the license, according to multiple sources close to the situation. Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema took “Lotr” to new heights with the success of its Oscar-winning trilogy directed by Peter Jackson: “The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring” (2001), “The Two Towers” (2002) and “The Return of the King” (2003).

Twenty years after delivering Peter Jackson’s mega Oscar-winning “Lord of the Rings” trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved book series, New Line Cinema is re-teaming with Warner Bros. Animation for an original anime feature building off Tolkien’s universe.
Veteran anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (the “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” and “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” TV series) will take fans on a journey into a legendary battle that shaped Middle-earth, and set the stage for the epic events seen in the original film trilogy.
“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” as it’s called, explores and expands upon the untold story behind the fortress of Helm’s Deep seen in “The Two Towers,” plunging into the life and bloody times of one of Middle-earth’s mightiest figures: Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan.

The J.R.R. Tolkien franchise is heading back to the big screen in a fresh New Line and Warner Animation anime title The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. I’m told that the Oscar-winning feature architects Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are not involved with the project as we speak, but that will be determined down the road. Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings: Return of the King scribe Philippa Boyens will be a consultant on the new project directed by Kenji Kamiyama. The pic is being fast-tracked with animation work done by Sola Entertainment. Voice casting is currently underway. Pic will be distributed around the globe by Warner Bros. Pictures.

A new “Lord of the Rings” movie is in the works. “The War of the Rohirrim” will be an animated prequel film set before the events of the main trilogy.

The studio behind the feature film trilogies “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” is partnering with Warner Bros. Animation on the original anime theatrical feature “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.”
The stand-alone feature will depict the bloody saga behind Helm’s Deep, the fortress depicted in “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” and the man in whose honor it’s named: Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan who spent much of his reign locked in a prolonged and costly war.
Veteran anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, who helmed Netflix’s “Ultraman” anime series, will direct the film from a screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”). Joseph Chou (the “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” TV series) is producing.

There will be no Season 2 for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Netflix confirmed the cancellation Monday of Jim Henson’s epic fantasy adventure series — a prequel to the original 1982 film — just hours after the series’ win this weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys for Outstanding Children’s Program.
“We can confirm that there will not be an additional season of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” said Lisa Henson, executive producer. “We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of The Dark Crystal saga concludes and we’ll look for ways to tell that story in the future. Our company has a legacy of creating rich and complex worlds that require technical innovation, artistic excellence, and masterful storytelling. Netflix will not be returning to the planet of Thra.
The streamer has canceled its fantasy puppet series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” after only a single season, Variety has confirmed.
The show was a prequel series to the original 1982 Jim Henson film, which tells the story of a group of young Gelflings who discover that their overlords — the evil, hideous Skeksis — are duplicitous and plan to consume their subjects’ life energy via the dark crystal in order to fuel their own.
News of the cancelation comes mere days after the show won an Emmy for best children’s series.

According to “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” making-of documentary, Netflix’s prequel series first tested a version using computer graphics to create the characters, but ultimately decided that puppets were the best choice. And thank goodness for that. The use of puppetry creates a visual continuity with the original 1982 Jim Henson film and makes the performances far more compelling and immediate than CGI would. Plus, puppets are just goddamn funny.
Co-creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews wanted to make a TV show for everybody, and that meant offsetting the grimmer aspects of “Dark Crystal” with some levity. In the series, the creepy Skeksis reign over the Gelfling and are extending their own life by sucking the essence from their subjects. “She looks like a Skeksis!”
On a crazy show like “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” where the ruling Skeksis are literally draining the life force of their Gelfling constituents, one of the most shocking moments isn’t violent at all, but involves a head-to-toe makeover. With a struggle for the Gelfling crown at stake, Princess Seladon shows up in the throne room wearing a costume that makes her look like a mini Skeksis. She’s both menacing and magnificent, but most importantly, she makes her political stance abundantly clear; she sides with the Skeksis.
Seladon, the eldest daughter of the All-Maudra Gelfling leader, was first mentioned in the “Dark Crystal” novels by J.M Lee, and was only going to have a small appearance in the first episode of the Netflix series. But director and executive producer Louis Leterrier felt that...

The finale of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance left a fairly open-ended story in play as the battle unfolds, but what does it all mean?
This article contains spoilers for the ending of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
For those who have watched all ten episodes of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, it’s clear that the unresolved ending indicates that Netflix and The Jim Henson Company are counting on being able to further explore the confrontation between the gelfling and the Skeksis in season 2. After an initial battle that resulted in the retreat of the Lords of the Crystal, the gelfling rightfully celebrated, but the seven clans are obviously far from secure in their momentary victory. Much of what we saw in the final moments leaves room for plenty of speculation, but there are a few things, especially hints from the original 1982 movie,...

Move over, “Game of Thrones.” What’s taking so long, “Lord of the Rings”? Netflix has brought “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” to TV, and it’s the bewitching and immersive experience that high fantasy fans have been waiting for.
Jim Henson and Frank Oz first performed alchemy in 1982 with the dark fantasy film “The Dark Crystal,” which gained a cult following in the ensuing 37 years. Now, the spell has been handed down to a new group of practitioners who’ve expanded and even improved upon the original. “Age of Resistance” transforms pointy-faced Gelflings into dauntless, epic heroes and creates a world that thrums with so much life that viewers will also hear the song of Thra themselves. Oh, what a time to be alive and a puppet!

With “Game of Thrones” smashing Emmy and viewership records for its final season this year and a highly-anticipated “Lord of the Rings” series in the works at Amazon, it’s fair to say fantasy worlds and magical kingdoms are in right now.

The executive producers of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance talk about how Jim Henson’s vision comes alive in the Netflix prequel.
There’s something about The Dark Crystal’s artistry in presenting characters and creatures that are designed and fabricated as fantastical figures controlled by human hands rather than by computer that transcends whatever motion capture or sophisticated visual effects can accomplish. With The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Jim Henson’s darkest tale will return to a more vibrant time in the planet of Thra’s history, and the marriage of puppetry, practical effects, and CGI will be a wonder to behold when the series arrives on Netflix on August 30, 2019. Creators Will Matthews and Jeffrey Addiss along with executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach told us all about how the 1982 film made the journey to the small screen.

1. “Glow” Season 3 (available August 9)
Why Should I Watch? The first two seasons of “Glow” were among the best reviewed of their given years, and there’s no reason to suspect Season 3 won’t keep the streak going. Starring the dynamite duo of Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin, “Glow” is a vivid, exciting, perceptive, funny, enlivening, well-acted, and beautifully captured comedy about a group of women wrestlers in the ’80s who band together to put out a compelling TV program built around their unique talents and personalities. “Glow” thrives by mimicking that same ambition, and Season 3 sees them relocating to Las Vegas, where they’ll host live events at one of the casinos. Expect more neon than ever, along with new series regular Geena Davis.
Bonus Reason: The central, slow-burn relationship in “Glow” isn’t a romance, but a friendship. Ever since the pilot, former best friends Ruth (Brie) and Debbie...
