Charlie Wright’s casting as Rodrick Heffley in the fourth live-action Diary of a Wimpy Kid film sparked the #NotMyRodrick meme, which the actor claimed had “ruined my career”. In a video about the incident that was uploaded on YouTube and TikTok on Sunday, the actor addressed the harsh criticism he received after playing Rodrick Heffley in what is considered to be his first public statement.
In the nine-minute clip, Wright talked about the negative reaction that followed the initial release of David Bowers’ Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul trailer in early 2017. This revelation has sparked outrage among fans, who are now calling for a much-needed change in the entertainment industry.

By the time Halloween wraps up, most people have tucked away their pumpkins and spider webs in favour of colourful wreaths and Santa figurines. For horror fans, it means Krampus and blood covered snow now take centre stage. The holiday of Christmas naturally lends itself to the horror genre, spawning favourites that include Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Rare Exports, and more. However, many films are too gruesome for younger people to enjoy.
To let children in on the festive and frightful fun, here is a variety of age-appropriate Christmas horror film and television specials the entire family can enjoy.
Creeped Out: Splinta Claws (2019)

With Christmas just around the corner, almost like clockwork, a flurry of related animated movies and specials are getting released, and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise is the latest one to follow suit. Based on the bestselling book series of the same name written by Jeff Kinney, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid animated movie series follows the misadventures of middle-schooler Greg Heffley and his simpleton, good-natured friend Rowley Jefferson. Narrative wise, the third entry in the animated movie trilogy, Cabin Fever, is definitely an improvement over the second entry, Rodrick Rules, and that’s primarily because of the festive charm captured through family dynamics. However, the trademark wit imbued in the source material through Jeff Kinney’s characterization was majorly missing in the movie, which was somewhat balanced out by the heart and an alternate, comparatively better ending than the book. Although the black-and-white line art animation...

The perpetual troubles of a prepubescent protagonist are humorously placed at the center of Disney Plus’ “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” After a successful run of four live-action features adapted from Jeff Kinney’s popular book series, director Swinton Scott refurbishes the franchise as an animated feature, and while the wholesome-minded product feels a tad redundant, it establishes its own identity, occasionally improving upon its cinematic predecessor enough to make it a worthwhile watch.
Scrawny, awkward tween Greg Heffley (Brady Noon) has always tried to avoid embarrassment as much as humanly possible, but life has a funny way of continually making him the butt of the joke. He’s currently sweating his social standing, and the bright red diary his mother bought him isn’t helping matters as it looks far less cool than an inconspicuous journal. He’s hoping that chronicling his pre-teen exploits will serve as the basis...

This week, there’s a mix of documentaries, the latest episodes of the streaming service’s ongoing shows and a couple of movies we haven’t seen before on the site. The fourth Diary Of A Wimpy Kid movie arrives in the UK this weekend. Well, we liked it...
Where possible, I try and write a review of a film without having seen anyone else’s opinions of it first. I’ve got plenty of time afterwards to assess just how wrong I am in the eyes of the world.
Last weekend, then, rather than attend a press show, I took my children of varying ages (which tends to be how children work) to the new Wimpy Kid film, The Long Haul. I’ve enjoyed the first three, and particular applaud the quite brilliantly cast company of young performers. But young performers grow old and so, five years after Diary Of A Wimpy Kid 3, The Long Haul arrives with the same director (David Bowery), author Jeff Kinney still heavily involved, but a totally new cast.

Returning for the fourth Diary Of A Wimpy Kid film – and his third as director – is British-born director David Bowers. Having started with animation – directing Flushed Away and Astro Boy, amongst his extensive credits – Bowers has since been primarily working on bringing Jeff Kinney’s characters to the screen.
Ahead of the release in UK cinemas this Friday of Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, he spared us some time for a chat about the movie.
We started by my asking if he’d been to see the film himself since it was finished…

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, and to paraphrase those renowned seventies scholars the Brady Bunch, “When it’s time to change then it’s time to change.”
While I’ve tried my hardest to slowly sneak those changes in, it’s gotten to the point where we’ll need to do something more drastic if the few of you reading the Weekend Warrior on a weekly basis actually want it to remain coming to you on a weekly basis. Because of that, we’re going to try something different by not throwing in as much independent limited releases for those checking the column out, and making the column a little more focused at least for the time being. (I’m probably going to move reviews for my Top Picks over to my blog, which is easy enough to...

After a five-year break, the Heffley family is back in action — although with a completely different cast playing them — in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, the fourth feature taken from Jeff Kinney’s highly relatable series of cartoon novels chronicling the life of a hapless middle schooler.
The hiatus after 2012’s Dog Days effectively aged out original lead Zachary Gordon (now 19), as well as his big brother/tormentor played by Devon Bostick (now 25), and while they were cleaning house, the producers also sent original parents Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris packing. "There's a new hero who dares to be... wimpy." Fox has debuted the official theatrical trailer for the latest sequel in the comedy series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, this one subtitled The Long Haul, about a family road trip. This is the fourth movie in the cinematic franchise based on the series of books by Jeff Kinney. Young actor Jason Drucker plays Greg, who convinces his family to take a road trip to attend his great grandmother's 90th birthday as a cover for what he really wants: to attend a nearby gamer convention. The cast includes Jason Ian Drucker, Charlie Wright, Owen Asztalos, Tom Everett Scott, and Alicia Silverstone. Surprisingly, this trailer is better than the teaser trailer but cuts out all the gaming convention footage. This actually looks like it might be an enjoyable road trip comedy, but I'm still not going to watch it. Here's the second...

I’m pretty sure that will all of the Marvel, DC and other million and a half promos, teasers, and posters coming out the real one you were waiting for was “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” All jokes aside though, a new trailer is here. You know who else isn’t joking? Author Jeff Kinney who created this book-series. It’s one of the most successful book series of all time. While it’s not Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling I think it’s safe to say that Kinney doesn’t have to work another day in his entire life. Anyway, 20th Century Fox has

A few years ago, the conventional wisdom was that physical books (and therefore, bookstores) were endangered species. All of us were going to get our reading material beamed directly into our various devices, if not our actual eyeballs, and there would no longer be physical books to buy.
This isn’t happening. Print book sales are up this year.
Among the categories helping to sell hard copies of books (besides coloring books, and is that still a thing?) is graphic novels. Sales of graphic novels were up twelve percent last year.
That is a lot.
A great deal of the credit for the book market success of graphic novels is Jeff Kinney’s Wimpy Kid series, which continues to sell and sell and sell. Raina Telgemeirer is another dynamo. Both are considered to create books for the children’s market (or young adult). While this market is not growing as...

October 23 was a big day for 9-year-old Mahlon. In fact, it’s been a big year for him.
In July, his family moved from Portland to Bend, Oregon, and after being homeschooled his entire life, he started to attend public school with the hopes of achieving his dream of throwing a birthday party with classmates and friends.
Last Sunday, the house was decked out, the party theme based on Mahlon’s favorite book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, was set and the birthday cake ready to cut, but no one showed up.

Jason Ian Drucker ("Every Witch Way") and Owen Asztalos ("Paterson") have been cast as the young leads of a reboot of "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" franchise in the works at Fox and Color Force.
David Bowers, who helmed two of the three previous live-action films which ran from 2010 to 2012, is returning to direct the new feature based on Jeff Kinney's series of books - more specifically the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul" title.
Drucker will replace Zachary Gordon as the main character Greg Heffley who convinces his family to embark on a summer road trip to attend Meemaw's 90th birthday - so he can secretly attend what he thinks is a nearby gamer convention. But the diversion takes them wildly off course, and Greg must figure out how to get his family back on track.
Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producing.

U2 singer and actors Goldberg and Cumberbatch and other celebrities turn artist for postcard sale to raise funds for school
To call the postcard-sized creation by Whoopi Goldberg a work of art, might be pushing it, but it is still expected to spark keen interest among buyers. The work will appear along with equally distinguished ones by Bono, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Julian Lennon in a silent auction to raise funds for a primary school in north London at the annual Affordable Art Fair
Cumberbatch and Bono have gone for self portraits – the Sherlock star's a Byronic profile, the U2 frontman's a quick slash of blue marker conjuring up his trademark sunglasses. Lennon has sent a sweetly traditional landscape in red marker on cardboard, complete with duck pond and cottage with smoking chimney, which any of the pupils might feel they could at least match in art class. Chicago – Most former kids can agree that junior high is pure hell. It’s the dividing line between the carefree bliss of elementary school and the budding maturity of high school. Suddenly kids are faced with a decision: either assert their dominance over the weakest of their peers or risk joining them. Become a bully or be bullied. Neither option is enticing.
Jeff Kinney’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” book series connected with young readers who related to its awkward protagonist, Greg Heffley, whose misadventures were conveyed through a cheerful amalgamation of journal entries, illustrations and comics. The film adaptations, however, have been more interested in capturing Kinney’s broadly comic sensibility rather than his nuggets of truth. Instead of illuminating the humanity within Kinney’s caricatures, the films exploit their quirks in nauseatingly cynical fashion.
Blu-ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

Jeff Kinney, author of the hugely popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid books – and one of Time magazine's top 100 most influential people – tells Nick McGrath why his stories resonate around the world
The parallels between unassuming middle child Jeff Kinney and his star-crossed fictional anti-hero Greg Heffley are too arresting to ignore. With his preppy shirts, earnest, toothy grin and diffident manner, Kinney – a 41-year-old father of two and self-confessed former computer games addict – was probably never picked first for the school football team.
Heffley, a luckless video games fanatic frozen in cartoon time as the simplistically drawn adolescent protagonist of Kinney's phenomenally popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, is similarly flawed and – however hard he tries – rarely penetrates beyond the outer fringes of the in-crowd.
Belittled by his cooler, tougher elder brother Rodrick, frustrated by his mollycoddled younger brother Manny and ignored by the class catch Holly Hills...

Magic Mike; Ted; Brave; Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
After what seemed like a lifetime leaning "quirkily" against people and inanimate objects in the posters for dismal, money-spinning rom-coms, Matthew McConaughey rediscovered his mojo this year with two movies that reminded us why we first sat up and took notice of him in Dazed and Confused, Lone Star and even Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. In William Friedkin's Killer Joe, he built upon the career resurrection hinted at in The Lincoln Lawyer, playing a slimy, murderous Texan working both sides of the law.
He dazzles once again in Magic Mike (2012, Lionsgate, 15) as the leader of a male striptease troupe whose routines boast none of the coy amateurism of The Full Monty. Inspired in part by the real-life experiences of beefcakey co-star and producer Channing Tatum, this Steven Soderbergh-directed romp continues the director's ongoing love affair with upmarket exploitation cinema.
