"According to legend, an ominous entity known as the Queen of Spades can be summoned by performing an ancient ritual. Those brave enough draw a door and a staircase on a mirror, in darkness, and say her name three times. What happens next must be experienced to be believed. Four teenagers decide to summon the Queen of Spades as a joke. But they could never imagine the horrors this innocent prank has condemned them and their loved ones to. The evil entity won’t stop until she gets their souls."

Epic Pictures have released a trailer and poster for director Patrick White’s supernatural horror Queen of Spades – which stars Ava Preston, Daniel Kash, Kaelen Ohm, Eric Osborne, Jamie Bloch, Nabil Rajo, and Krista Marchand – and is based on a Russian take on the same mythos as Candyman.
The film, whose same story was told in the 2018 direct to DVD film Queen of Spades: Dark Rite, follows four teenagers that summon an ominous entity as a joke, not knowing what horrors lie ahead for them and their loved ones when the evil they’ve unleashed will stop at nothing to take their souls.

"Queen of Spades, show yourself..." Epic Pictures Group has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror film called Queen of Spades, made by Canadian filmmaker Patrick White. The film is about the "ancient legend" of the Queen of Spades, who can supposedly be provoked by drawing a door and a staircase on a mirror, in darkness, and saying her name three times. An ominous entity known as the Queen of Spades can be called upon with this ancient ritual. Four teenagers decide to try it out and end up summoning the Queen of Spades, but they could never imagine the horrors that await them... She won't stop until she gets their souls. Of course not! She always needs more souls. The film stars Ava Preston, Daniel Kash, Kaelen Ohm, Eric Osborne, Jamie Bloch, Nabil Rajo, with Krista Marchand as the "Queen of Spades". This looks like a derivative mash-up...

Despite the proliferation of news stories about bathroom bills and pushes to use gender-inclusive pronouns in classrooms and workplaces, stories about gender expression and identity are still ones that Hollywood can struggle to get right.
It was only last year that Showtime’s “Billions” cast non-binary actor Asia Kate Dillon to play the first non-binary role on an American series, and the transgender community has had a mixed reaction to cis-gender male actor Jeffrey Tambor’s award-winning turn as a transitioning woman on Amazon’s “Transparent” the past four seasons. This season saw “Looking” alum Tanya Saracho’s new Starz family drama, “Vida.” Among its many queer-positive stances is the casting of non-binary talent Ser Anzoategui as Eddy, a woman mourning the loss of her wife while also struggling to have a relationship with her detached stepdaughters. While Anzoategui uses they/them pronouns, their character (at least in season one) is a cis-gender woman.

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"The Martian"
Unfortunately, the poster on this one was misleading -- they never actually let us bring Matt Damon home after seeing the movie. (His wife would probably disapprove.) You can, however, take home Ridley Scott's acclaimed Mars mission movie "The Martian" on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 12. The Blu-ray editions include more than 90 minutes of special features, including five "in-world" pieces, and featurettes from the cast, director, and producers. There's also a gag reel, which should be fun.
"Hotel Transylvania 2"
Drac's Pack is back in the sequel to "Hotel Transylvania," as they put the son of Mavis and Johnny through a "monster-in-training" boot camp to bring out his vampire side. The DVD, out January 12, includes feature commentary with the director and vocal cast,...

Yam Laranas shot his original horror movie “The Echo” in 2004 and finished up an American remake of the same movie in 2008. The film stars Jesse Bradford as an ex-con who moves into a haunted apartment building and begins to hear sounds. A longer, more plot-heavy (i.e. voiceover narration) version of the trailer was posted last year (see that here). This one is a Korean version of the trailer, and is a slicker, less obvious but definitely more atmospheric cut. The bathroom stall scene creeps me the hell out, man. An ex-con moves into an old apartment building, where he encounters a domestic problem involving a police officer, his wife, and their daughter. When he tries to intervene, however, a mysterious curse entraps him. Starring Jamie Bloch, Jesse Bradford, Iza Calzado, Kevin Durand, Jayne Eastwood, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Carlos Leon, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Amelia Warner, and Louise Linton. Yam Laranas directs.
