Alfred Molina has donned a ton of iconic roles spread across multiple different genres that perfectly display his versatility as an actor throughout his over four-decade-long and counting career. But his most commendable performance, besides that of Doc Ock in Spider-Man‘s saga, was his minor debut role as Satipo in Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark from 1981.

Even though his role was very minor with a brief screen time in the Indiana Jones movie, Molina still had to go through stuff that would be a nightmare for all the people terrified of spiders. This is because, while Tobey Maguire’s second film as the web-slinger didn’t really force him to do anything with spiders, it was actually Spielberg who made his scene an absolute nightmare to shoot.

When Marvel Studios teamed with Sony Pictures and agreed to share Spider-Man, the decision was quickly made to focus on villains the web-slinger hadn't faced on screen before.
Spider-Man: Homecoming featured Shocker and The Vulture and even set the stage for Scorpion's eventual debut by introducing Mac Gargan. Spider-Man: Far From Home shifted focus to Mysterio, only for Spider-Man: No Way Home to pit Tom Holland's Peter Parker against the baddies from previous Spider-Man movies.
The MCU hero battled Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, and The Lizard; however, as exciting as that was for fans, it seemingly closed the door on new versions of those baddies appearing on Earth-616.
Heck, Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn even confirmed his Variant doesn't exist on that world!

The MCU has a busy lineup of upcoming movies, despite Marvel Studios facing challenges with their recent projects. There’s been talk about releasing fewer films and shows due to fan fatigue over declining quality. However, Spider-Man remains a major draw, consistently proving to be Marvel’s most profitable franchise.
In the MCU, Spider-Man has had three standalone movies, with a fourth confirmed. Producer Amy Pascal mentioned several months ago that work on the sequel had been underway but paused due to solidarity with the ongoing WGA Strike at the time.
With the development of the movie now in full swing, new rumors have emerged about who Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will face in the fourth installment. According to Alex Perez from Cosmic Circus, Spider-Man will battle Doc Ock and Green Goblin once more in the MCU. It’s still unclear if the former actors will return to reprise their roles.

There have been talks about releasing fewer projects, as fans are definitely becoming tired of shows and movies of lower quality; still, if one character always managed to drag people to movies, it’s Spider-Man, by far the most profitable Marvel franchise, no matter the product you’re looking at.
So far, talking about the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has three standalone movies and a fourth on the way. This was confirmed several months ago by producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed that the work on the sequel has been ongoing but stopped due to the solidarity with the ongoing WGA Strike at the time.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 has many iconic scenes that have had a lasting impact. None, however, have been as timeless and memorable as the train scene. From fighting Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock on a moving train to stopping the said train and an entire train car full of people hiding Spider-Man’s identity, it is safe to say the scene left an impact. It has become ingrained in the character’s history, and there have been many attempts to recreate it.
Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man stopping a train in Spider-Man 2
Even though the entire sequence was less than ten minutes long, the preparation and thought that went into it are truly impressive. Other than the director, it is impressive just how many hands were involved in making it. Here is an in-depth background on how the scene was shot.

Willem Dafoe has been synonymous with the Green Goblin after starring as the character in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. The actor was the primary antagonist in the first film and made small cameos in subsequent films. He fully returned to the role in the MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw him as the primary antagonist again.
While Dafoe is perfect as the Green Goblin, many fans have also hoped to see him in other villainous roles, primarily the Joker. However, fans got a glimpse of what he might have been like if he played Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2 instead of Alfred Molina in a rare behind-the-scenes footage from the Raimi directorial.

Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy still remains one of the most iconic comic book movie trilogies of all time, since it introduced a plethora of villains long before MCU was a thing. One of those villains was Molina’s Doc Ock.
Molina portrayed the character’s arc flawlessly, transitioning from a brilliant scientist to a mind-controlled villain and ultimately becoming a genuine hero. Molina excelled in both emotional and action-packed scenes, adding depth to the character of Doc Ock and making him one of Spider-Man’s most compelling movie villains.
Now in his recent interview with Vanity Fair, Molina revealed that he was surprised he was asked to reprise his role. He was a bit worried however due to his advanced age, but Pascal and Watts reassured him they had the technology to “fix it.”
“Coming back 17 years later to play the character again, no one was more surprised than me.

There are any number of actors who could have taken on the role of Dr. Otto Octavius in 2004's Spider-Man 2, but Sam Raimi made a somewhat unlikely choice with Alfred Molina. However, it would prove to absolutely be the right one.
The actor made Doctor Octopus his own and, even two decades later, his Doc Ock is still considered one of the best comic book supervillains to ever grace the screen.
In a recent interview, Molina reflected on his career and admitted he was surprised to be considered seeing as he was best known at the time for his roles in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Frida.
"It was a big surprise to me, because it's not the kind of movie that I imagined myself to be qualified for. You always think of these big action films as [casting] physical types, and I've definitely never been that.

The finale of Sam Raimi’s trilogy has undoubtedly been one of the most divisive Spider-Man movies of all time. Therefore, due to the audience’s mixed reception, Sony Pictures assembled a Spider-Man 3 editor’s cut, for the home video. When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's approach to the multiverse on the big screen, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is the only movie that realizes the potential of franchise crossovers between the old guard of Marvel movies and the interconnected films of Kevin Feige's Marvel Studios. That's right, not even "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" properly delivered on the promise of a multiverse truly full of madness, opting instead for hollow fan service, even though director Sam Raimi had fun tearing all those alternate Marvel superheroes apart at the hands of the Scarlet Witch. The biggest set piece in the most recent live-action Spider-Man film, 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home," involves, through a series of multiversal shenanigans, Tom Holland's friendly neighborhood web-slinger teaming up with two other Spider-Men to fight Electro, Sandman, and the Lizard on the Statue of Liberty.
The biggest set piece in 2004's "Spider-Man 2" involves Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man trying to stop a train full of innocent passengers from crashing.
By comparison, the train scene may seem almost quaint, but director Sam Raimi used it as an opportunity to combine then-state-of-the-art action filmmaking with genuine humanity and pathos, resulting in a cocktail that dozens of superhero films have been unable to fully replicate in the 20 years since. Sometimes a fandom can get, let’s say, ahead of themselves. A certain rumor will take hold with only the flimsiest evidence to back it up and before you know it, every single character on WandaVision is Mephisto (our bad on that one).

Shortly before Invincible season 2 premiered in late 2023 (and then again in early 2024), fans of the series and the Robert Kirkman comic upon which it is based became convinced that none other than Spider-Man would be appearing in an upcoming episode. And in said fans’ defense, the evidence was actually pretty compelling.

This article contains spoilers for Invincible season 2 episode 8.
Invincible‘s first season finale was a tough act to follow. Mark Grayson a.k.a. Invincible’s bloody battle with his own father Nolan a.k.a. Omni-Man is already the stuff of animated superhero TV (and meme) legend. Still the Invincible season 2 finale comes closer to recapturing the excitement than it has any right to.
After Mark got his ass handed to him by Nolan last time around, it’s finally his turn to do some ass-handing himself. Multiverse-hopper Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) immediately became one of Invincible’s greatest threats by holding his family hostage. Those stakes give this finale “I Thought You Were Stronger” an impressive emotional throughline.
And of course, there is some multiverse nonsense to enjoy as well. Here is how Invincible season 2 ends.

A lot of past villains returned for "Spider-Man: No Way Home," but it's safe to say that Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin made the strongest second impression. When the Goblin side of him took over, he was mean and terrifying, even more so than he was back in 2002, but when the Osbourne side was back in control, he was surprisingly sympathetic. He brought a dark, unpredictable energy to the film that Tom Holland's first two "Spider-Man" movies never quite had. The brutality of the Green Goblin helped prevent the film from feeling a little too much like a theme park ride and helped make the movie's cameo-filled nature seem a lot less self-indulgent.
A lot of this came down to Dafoe's insistence that he could get in on the action and that the movie let him be in the fight scenes as much as possible instead of relying too much on CGI.

Sony Pictures’ 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home starring Tom Holland was directed by Jon Watts and was the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. The movie saw the return of not only Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield but also Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe as Doc Ock and Green Goblin. Kevin Feige explains why the studios avoided bringing them back before No Way Home.
Upon its release, Spider-Man: No Way Home received positive reviews from the critics and the audience and became the highest-grossing film of 2021. The movie grossed near about $1.9 billion worldwide and surpassed its predecessors. The crossover between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and previous Spider-Man movies directed by Sam Raimi and Marc Webb was highly appreciated by the audience. According to Kevin Feige they had a good reason for not bringing back the characters before Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“With great power comes great responsibility” might be the most important line in superhero fiction. It crystalizes a theme present in the best superhero stories even before Spider-Man‘s debut in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman tales and Bill Parker, and C.C. Beck’s Captain Marvel adventures. The line transforms superhero stories from mere power fantasies to stories about service and care, about empowering others instead of consolidating power for yourself.
So when a member of Las Arañas, Madame Web‘s ill-advised magical natives, tells Cass Webb (Dakota Johnson), “When you take on the responsibility, great power will come,” it’s clear the production team has lost the plot.
Director S.J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the script with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker, and certainly a boardroom of IP lawyers, intends the line to break Cass out of her...

The concept of expanding Sony’s Spider-Man universe originated in 2013, intending to introduce spin-off films, notably one featuring Venom after ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ Disheartened by the film’s reception, Sony abandoned these plans, entering a collaboration with Marvel Studios in 2015, integrating Spider-Man into the MCU.
Despite mixed-to-negative reviews for Ssu movies like Morbius, the universe persisted, with various live-action and animated projects in development, exploring both Spider-Man’s supporting characters and villains. Rumors now suggest two additional projects focusing on Doc Ock and Mysterio, as reported by Caiden Reed on X.
Happy New Year! According to my source, there are two solo projects in development for Doc Ock and Mysterio.

The Spider-Man universe from Sony is still swinging. This past week saw the release of the trailer for the studio’s new extended universe spin-off, Madame Web. Meanwhile, Tom Hardy is also slipping back into the anti-hero role of Eddie Brock as Venom 3 restarts production as the SAG-AFTRA strike ends and many productions resume. We’ve been able to see the popular Spider-Man rogue in live-action three times now. The evil alien symbiote made its big screen debut as a big late reveal in 2007’s Spider-Man 3.

The canceled Sinister Six movie had a crazy scene with Spider-Man that no fan would have ever expected to see.
Long before Sony Pictures decided to share the Spider-Man film rights with Marvel Studios, the company had extensive plans not only for the iconic character but also his cast of colorful villains. They had made sure that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would introduce a handful of baddies, who could then go on to star in sequels and their own spin-off films.
The 2014 Andrew Garfield-led project did successfully introduce and tease a crazy amount of bad guys: Vulture, Rhino, Doc Ock, Green Goblin, and Electro, just to name a few.
