Though Gladiator filmmaker Ridley Scott is still in post-production putting the final touches on his upcoming Biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, the director is already planning to bring another fabled Biblical hero to the big screen. This time, Scott has set his sights on the story of David, said to have become the king of Israel after slaying the giant Goliath in his youth with a stone from his sling.
However, Scott (who is not signed to direct yet but has boarded as a producer) won’t be centering on the battle between David and Goliath – the film is reported to instead follow David through his post-Goliath years, during his reign as the king of Israel. Jonathan Stokes, who has written four Black List scripts in three years and had a record four scripts recognized on the Hit List for most-liked but unproduced spec scripts, will be penning the screenplay.

It was only a matter of time before Hollywood came calling for that sweet, sweet Bible money. This year's flood of Christian films has been so strong (with Noah leading the pack), and it's about to intensify with this year's Ridley Scott-directed Exodus: Gods And Kings. And that working relationship is bearing fruit, as Scott and Fox are once again teaming up for the epic retelling of David and Goliath. Variety reports that Ridley Scott's Scott Free production company is reteaming with Fox to present David, a narrative about the Bible's King David. Scott's only on as a producer thus far, though the intention is for Scott to eventually direct, even if the busy director has several plans for future movies. Little-known Jonathan Stokes, who previously penned the Scott Adkins action film El Gringo, will grab the pen for this film, which reportedly will focus on the reign...

Ridley Scott has a thing for the bible. Shortly before the first trailer for Exodus: Gods and Kings dropped, Variety announced that Scott wanted to bring another Old Testament story to the big screen; this time, the story of David and Goliath.
Fox has hired Jonathan Stokes to write an untitled pic inspired by the character from the “David and Goliath” story and focusing on the King of Israel. The plot, however, will probably focus on David's time as the king of Israel. We're unsure it his famous fight against Goliath will be included.
Though Scott will most likely direct the pic, it hasn't been made official. Thus far, we know that he will produce through his Scott Free banner and along with Chernin Entertainment. Then again, Scott has a lot on his plate, including the release of Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Martian, starring Matt Damon, and the sequel...

On the same day that the first trailer for his Moses movie—Exodus: Gods and Kings, starring Christian Bale—debuted on the Internet, Ridley Scott has announced his intention to tackle another Biblical epic. As first reported in Variety, Scott, Exodus producer Peter Chernin, and 20th Century Fox are re-teaming for a movie about David, the boy who slew Goliath and grew up to be the exalted king of Israel.
Jonathan W. Stokes, who penned the script for the Benedict Cumberbatch project Blood Mountain, is writing a screenplay that will focus on David’s reign as king, following his early battle with the giant Philistine.

Bible epics are so in right now as evident Noah and the upcoming Exodus: Gods and Kings, and thanks to the combined efforts of Godzilla and Guillermo del Toro, monster movies are also back in vogue. So, like pious peanut butter and unimaginable chocolate carnage these two great genre tastes have come together for a David and Goliath movie. Well, sort of. It’ll actually by a post-Goliath David and Goliath movie, but if we’re lucky, we’ll still get an awesome Goliath corpse “elephant graveyard” scene. First reported by Variety, the working title for the film is David, and it’ll be coming from the same team currently hard at work making the story of Moses into something more interesting than your average Sunday school class. Ridley Scott will be producing the film along with Chernin Entertainment (20th Century Fox will reign over all), while Jonathan Stokes will handle the screenplay.

"Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch is heading into a war zone with the upcoming film, "Blood Mountain."
A thriller written by Jonathan W. Stokes and John Romano, directed by Sergei Bodrov, "Blood Mountain" follows two enemies trekking to safety against nearly impossible odds. In the film a private military contractor survives an enemy attack only to find himself alone in hostile territory. The man must then escort a prisoner -- the world's most-wanted terrorist -- out of the war zone.
Although Cumberbatch will play one of the lead roles, it is currently unclear whether that means the actor will play the contractor or the terrorist. Either role seems like it could be incredible in the "Star Trek into Darkness" actor's hands.
"Blood Mountain" plans to begin production in April in Morocco.

Paramount Pictures has hired three-time Black List nominated scribe Jonathan W. Stokes to pen a feature adaptation of the Harlan Coben novel "Six Years" which is being shaped as a potential star vehicle for Hugh Jackman.
The story centers on Jake Fisher, a man who watched the love of his life, Natalie, marry another man. Six years have passed when Jake comes across the other man's obituary.
He resolves to attend the funeral, hoping to catch a glimpse of Natalie. But the mourning widow is not Natalie, throwing all of his past memories with the woman into question.
Mark Gordon is producing. Only one of best-selling author Coben's books has been translated to the screen - Guillaume Canet's well-regarded "Tell No One" in 2006.

Mark Gordon is producing. The logline: a man watches his life love marry another man. The groom dies six years later and the guy can’t help but try to glimpse the widow at the funeral. She’s not the same woman. The book was published last March and became another bestseller for Coben, whose Tell No One was turned into the Guillaume Canet French film, with remake rights at Warner Bros where Argo scribe Chris Terrio is writing it. Stokes wrote three scripts that made the Black List. They are Blood Mountain, which is being financed independently by Derby Street Films and Movie Package Co. with Lawrence Bender producing and Sergei Bodrov attached to direct, and Stokes executive producing; Murders & Acquisitions,...

This year's list was compiled from the suggestions of 290 film executives, each of whom picked up to ten of their favorite scripts. Since the list started in 2004, many screenplays ended up being turned into films. In 2005, two of the top three scripts were "Lars and the Real Girl" which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and "Juno" which actually won the Oscar. See the 2012 Black List below, broken up by how many votes each screenplay received. Today, The Expendables 2 comes crashing into movie theaters across the country like a tank. With its Herculean roster of action legends, one name you might not yet recognize on the poster is that of Scott Adkins. We must stress, the “yet.” Adkins is currently fighting his way, literally, up the action cinema food chain. He appeared in such films as Ninja and The Bourne Ultimatum. He wowed many of us with his turn as vicious prisoner brawler Yuri Boyka in the Undisputed franchise. In Undisputed III: Redemption, he held his own with Mirageman himself, Marko Zaror. In addition to The Expendables 2, Adkins will again star alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren in Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, the “fourth” film in the franchise that was just announced as part of the second wave of this year’s Fantastic Fest. Not one to slow down, Adkins also stars in the action movie El Gringo, which...

The full list of films is as follows: Transit – Starring James Caviezel, James Frain, Elizabeth Rohm, Harold Perrineau and Sterling Knight; and directed by Antonio Negret and written by Michael Gilvary Dragon Eyes – Starring Jean Claude Van Damme,...

Shaun Redick and Ray Mansfield are producing for Movie Package Co. with James Gibb and alongside executive producers Nicola Horlick, Rachel Durkin, Brookly Weavera and Stokes.
Blood Mountain is about a young Army Ranger whose team is ambushed and killed in Pakistan. He “must escort the world’s most wanted terrorist over dangerous terrain in order to bring him to justice. Could Jonathan Stokes be the next Peter Morgan? Stokes, an emerging writer, recently joined the Oscar-nominated "Frost/Nixon" writer as one of only four scribes ever to have two scripts on Hollywood's Black List -- the annual list of the best unproduced screenplays -- in one year. Also read: 'The Imitation Game' Tops 2011 Black List Allan Loeb ("The Switch") and Dan Fogelman ("Cars") are the other double-winners. "After toiling in a vaccuum for so many years, it was a huge pleasure to be recognized twice in one year," Stokes told TheWrap in his first-ever media interview. One of his two...

For the seventh annual year a list of the top unproduced screenplays written in the past 12 calendar months has been made. The Black List is the most recognized and celebritized compilation for screenwriters and unknown movie ideas to be heard. While some prior Black List scripts have gone on to be made (like Juno or 500 Days of Summer), most scripts do not. However, what being on The Black List can do is to give a big push of credibility to a screenwriter hoping to carve out a career in Hollywood.
The Black List recepients are chosen by a committee of 300 individuals working in Hollywood: agents, writers, producers, managers and the like. They read the screenplays that float around the showbiz ecosystem; some are bought and are already in development while others are still seeing the interest of talent of financial backers.

This year at the Austin Film Festival, studio executive and “Black List” founder Franklin Leonard introduced the opening film, Butter. It’s a fantastic satirical comedy written by Jason Micallef and Leonard’s post-screening Q&A with him was equally hilarious and unconventional.
Sitting in the upper deck at the Paramount Theatre, I was in awe at how Leonard had not only created the list just six years prior but how it provided such legitimacy to emerging screenwriters, like Micallef. He was relatively unknown in ‘08, but his script placed third on the list. Now he has a movie coming out starring Jennifer Garner, his new scripts have Jack Black and Jason Segel attached (separately), and he wrote a movie titled Good Vibrations about, um, marital aids starring Charlize Theron. That’s the power of the Black List.

Combine David Katzenberg with writer Seth Grahame-Smith and the bizarre hybrid creation is KatzSmith Productions, a company grabbing attention in Hollywood for imaginative mash-up ideas and a love of all things genre. The duo likes to mix-and-match history and horror, fuse crime sagas with ghost stories, and they love the idea of assassins avenging Wall Street malfeasance. Oh yeah, they also want to make a Beetlejuice sequel that die-hard fans will love.
