I started writing a weekly column here at ComicMix a year ago today. The past year I’ve given my thoughts on a number of issues focusing in particular on diversity in comics. Those issues have often involved Lgbtq representation. I’m going use this column to highlight some of the topics I’ve covered, see if anything has changed or if any predictions I had made turned out to be true and maybe add in an anecdote or two.
The second column I wrote for ComicMix was about Coagula, DC Comics first and only trans superhero. A lot has happened this past year as far as Coagula is concerned. She went from being an obscure character created by Rachel Pollack from a still uncollected run of Doom Patrol, a long cancelled series with seemingly little hope of being brought back as a monthly comic to being the flagship title...

While it's been fairly well-known (or at least assumed) that Stellan Skarsgard's Dr. Erik Selvig might not be back for Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok--since it was mainly taking place in space--the actor still thinks he may be called back for Avengers: Infinity War since he has one more film in his contract.
When talking to Skarsgard for his upcoming Norwegian crime-thriller In Order of Disappearance (in theaters and VOD on August 26), he said that he doesn't known anything for sure yet but thinks that it's likely you'll see him in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, if only to finish up his current contract, although he half-joked they would probably have to pay him more money.
Skarsgard's Dr. Selvig was first introduced in Marvel Studios' Thor in 2011 and he played a key role in Marvel's The Avengers the next year. He returned in Thor: The Dark World and...

Typically, I’m in favor of articles that emphasize the world “favorite” over the word “best.” If you want to have a conversation about who your favorite superhero in any modern superhero movie is, there are dozens of candidates, and I’m sure every single character is someone’s favorite. However, I’m here today to make a case for one character as standing above every other superhero in modern movies as the best, the ideal, the person who is simply better than anyone else. After all, he’s got his third movie opening this Friday, the fifth he’s appeared in overall, and it’s time we all acknowledge what is abundantly clear by now: Captain America is the best. All three of the Captain America films are credited to the same screenwriters. Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus managed to do something that no one else has done so far at Marvel,...

With more and more superheroes coming out on the small screen, isn't it time to shake off the old rules about secret identities?
Like spandex, dead parents and creatively-named bad guys, secret identities have been a part of superhero lore since the very beginning. With 70-plus years of history behind it, there was a time when the idea that the main character on a superhero television show would reveal his or her real identity to a love interest, best friend or family member was pretty ludicrous, and things were just accepted the way they were.
But that was when there was only one or two superhero shows on the air at any one time, and audiences had no option but to just accept the status quo. Now, things are very different.
Not only do we have multiple superheroes to choose from on the small screen, but we also have shared...

(Cbr) - "Colbert Report" host Stephen Colbert appeared Tuesday on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," where the conversation quickly turned to the upcoming Marvel variant cover depicting him as the Falcon, and then to what he recalled as "one of my proudest moments": when he was bequeathed Captain America’s shield in 2007 following the death of Steve Rogers. "I got a letter — and the shield — I got a letter from Joe Quesada, who’s the head of Marvel Comics, he said, 'We’ve read Cap’s will, and in his will he said there’s only one person patriotic enough to wield the solid vibranium shield, and it was you, Stephen Colbert.' And my wife, who knows nothing from Marvel — she grew up playing with, you know, paper dolls, that sort of thing — she read the letter and wept with pride for me. And she said, 'I don...

Phase I of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was, in retrospect, a densely plotted affair, with several story threads all tying together – and paying off to glorious effect – inThe Avengers; everything from the Tesseract to Loki himself was properly introduced and fully integrated with the rest of the films’ burgeoning continuity, allowing the first phase’s climax to only worry about telling its particular story instead of pulling the narrative dead weight of exposition.
Phase II (which consists of last year’s Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World and this year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy), in contrast, has largely eschewed world-building in favor of smaller, more character-driven tales – Tony Stark’s post-traumatic stress disorder, say, or Thor’s world-weariness and simple desire for love over the needs of either his family or an interstellar monarchy. Even The Winter Soldier’s Shield upheaval...

(Cbr) Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has overseen the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception. Yet much like the comic books that inspire the films, Marvel Studios is looking to bring about some big status quo changes with their latest motion picture event, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," debuting in stateside theaters today. Drawing heavily from Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting's 2005 "Winter Soldier" story in the "Captain America" comic book series, the film not only reintroduced Bucky (Sebastian Stan) as brainwashed assassin The Winter Soldier, it also, as previewed by the trailers, explores major trust issues between Captain America (Chris Evans) and S.H.I.E.L.D., the peacekeeping organization at the center of the McU. Cbr News spoke with Feige at last month's "Winter Soldier" press junket in Beverly Hills about what Marvel Studios was looking to say with this latest installment, the major role the film plays in setting up 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron,...

Thor: The Dark World Blu-Ray Review
The second installment of the Thor saga has plenty of action, but misses the mark to a certain extent when it comes to the wide array of facets it hopes to infuse into the story. The dedication to, and belief in, the depth and breadth of the various arcs in the story are solidified in the bonus features of the home release, and while the exposition makes for elaborate and detailed featurettes, they probably serve as too clear a sign of what went wrong with the production.
Thor: The Dark World kicks off with a rather clunky piece of development that leaves Thor explaining the events of The Avengers, his time back on Earth, and subsequent lack of phone call to Jane. Of course, the film also needs a villain to come and destroy a good chunk of the map and/or threaten to do same,...

It's tough to think of a cinematic undertaking as vast as Marvel Studios' continuity of films since 2008's Iron Man. While The Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter were both massive film productions based on a literary property, the first phase of Marvel's plan also cross-pollinated between respective franchises, all leading up to the big crossover in The Avengers.

Ing Direct has launched its first new campaign since appointing a new agency roster at the beginning of the year.
The campaign is based around the idea of ‘enabling a life well spent’.
Ing’s executive director, customer, Brett Morgan said in a press release: “We wanted to ensure our brand represented what we are to our customers – a bank that’s simple and easy to deal with.”
“Since launching, we have captured the attention of Australians and we’re now looking to cement our place in their financial decision making. With our upcoming launch into superannuation, we‟re now covering four areas of banking and this campaign highlights that we‟re more than a savings bank. “We are industry leading in customer advocacy and the ‘part of you’ campaign reflects this position.”
Ing appointed Droga5 as creative agency, Soap to handle digital and Um as media agency in January.

Two "Iron Man" movies, plus two interpretations of "The Hulk," plus "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger" have led up to one of the most anticipated -- and teased -- superhero epics in cinematic history: "The Avengers."
Director Joss Whedon has miraculously melded together the different mythologies of these characters for a team-up that gives each character his or her due, yet still feels cohesive: a story about defeating Thor's half-brother Loki before he obliterates the Earth, now that he's gained access to the unlimited power of the Cosmic Cube, or Tesseract.
Fans worried about the end result of all of these heroes mixed together on-screen can officially breathe easy because "The Avengers" delivers on all levels, has unexpected bits of humor and is one of the choicest comic-book movies of all time. If you liked some or all of the individual superhero films that led up to "The Avengers,...

[Editor's Note: As you can see, we've gotten a lot of heat for this article. It was meant to be a satirical piece, and obviously, it did not come across that way. There are plenty of female superhero fans, and our intent was not to make them feel marginalized. We've changed the headline to reflect the focus as we originally intended it (but did not communicate as well): One woman's perspective on the Avengers] As your boyfriend probably told you, "The Avengers" is hitting theaters this Friday. And you, dutiful girlfriend, are attending. But you hate action movies and you've never even read a comic book. (Of course, that's not a slight against the girls who actually do read comic books -- i.e. real fans, actual people with varied interests -- but for this, let's just go with the stock view of ladies, ladies!) Still, there's no need to fret. Beyond the fact that Joss Whedon's action film is Awesome (note the capital A), we've created a streamlined girl's guide to ward off any confusion or mid-movie what's-going-on whisperings. Including cocktail introductions a la "Bridget Jones's Diary" and boyfriend impressing tidbits, below is everything you need to know about "The Avengers." The Backstory Six superheroes who cross paths and come together to rescue the human race from an extraterrestrial annihilation. The Main...

With The Avengers just days away and Iron Man 3 set to begin production next month the Marvel universe is clearly the hot topic at the moment. To begin with, the international box-office has never played a larger role in the success of Hollywood feature films and today it was announced Iron Man 3 will be a co-production with China. Variety reports Dmg Entertainment will invest in the production of the third pic in the superhero franchise, manage the Chinese co-production process and jointly produce the film in China. The film will be doing some on location shooting in China later this summer. Money from foreign territories isn't a new idea in Hollywood and independent filmmaking, but the more global the films become, I wonder how much effect that will have on their story lines. Right now films do so much to try and appeal to so many demographics at once while...

The Avengers Trailer. Josh Whedon‘s The Avengers (2012) movie trailer stars Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr, and Chris Evans. The Avengers‘ plot synopsis: “When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins…superheroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.”
I am really starting to get excited by the prospect of an The Avengers movie. The tone at the beginning of The Avengers movie trailer was excellent with the narration by Loki (Tom Hiddleston). I also like that there is animosity Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.

Back in February, Marvel Studios hired Captain America: The First Avenger screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus to pen a Captain America sequel, five months before First Avenger is released. Like most comic book movie franchises, establishing a sequel is important to maintain momentum, if the box office receipts reveal there is any.
Unlike the modern-day settings of Iron Man and Thor, Marvel's other summer comic book adaptation, First Avenger takes place in the past, as a young, scrawny Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans) joins the Super Soldier program in order to get a chance to fight in World War II. Like his comic book origins, Cap will eventually be frozen in a block of ice and thawed in the present day (or so Evans revealed in April), finding himself a part of The Avengers, which is currently shooting.

When Chris Evans was cast as the new Captain America for this summer's "Captain America: The First Avenger" and the upcoming "The Avengers," the news was met with varied reactions from comic book fans.
We've got some potentially good news for those of you who don't quite buy Evans in the role. Well, it's good news if Sebastian Stan is more your type. Stan, who plays Captain America's sidekick Bucky in the films, may be getting an upgrade, as the comic books do feature a storyline where Tony Stark promotes Bucky to Captain America after Steve Rogers dies.
When PopWrap's Jarett Wieselman sat down with Stan to discuss this possibility, he stayed mum, saying, "I'll let you find that out for yourself." Wieselman says Stan didn't seem particularly psyched about the idea - particularly because of the intense training schedule Chris Evans endured to get Captain America-worthy pecs.

In a video interview with the New York Post, the actor behind 'Bucky' in Marvel & Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger, Sebastian Stan, dishes on the filming experience as well training among other things. At the end of the video, while it may be a stretch, when the actor was questioned would he appear in Marvel's The Avengers, he got a bit choked up. Check it! With the trades listing Stan's Captain America co-star Derek Luke reprising his "Gabe Jones' role in Marvel's The Avengers, as well Stan's reply in the video above, I can't help but imagine The Avengers will possibly open in a WW2 setting; similar to the Ultimates comic. What do you think of that? Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios have released a new featurette for director Joe Johnston’s forthcoming film, Captain America: The First Avenger starring Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell and Hugo Weaving.
The featurette (as you will see) was done as some cross promotional marketing thing with Norton Antivirus. Thankfully aside from the logo being in the featurette, it’s not a commercial of any sort and the featurette is really cool. Check it out below!
Featurette: Captain America: The First Avenger – Behind the Shield
[Notice: Posting of this featurette should not be taken as my endorsement of Norton Antivirus, or any Norton products for that matter. Though I would happily endorse Vipre Antivirus, which is actually good software and not a system choking pile of crap like Norton products]
Synopsis:
Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.
Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army.

Well Marvel movie-maniacs, are you eager for another superhero cinema outing after this weekend’s somewhat disappointing trek through the DC Universe ( sorry Gl fans)? Hope these pics will get you stoked for the arrival ( in less than five weeks! ) of our favorite star-spangled sentinel of liberty, Captain America: The First Avenger. Below us is Chris Evans as the pre-Operation Rebirth Steve Rogers wishing he could join the fight against the Axis forces at the start of America’s involvement in World War II. All photos come courtesy of Paramount Pictures.
Speaking of Operation Rebirth, here’s a photo of Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark ( Tony’s father ) , one of the scientists assisting Dr. Erskine.
Down below it looks to be a pre-Skull Johann Schmidt played by Hugo Weaving.

They cover its history, how they made it work for the movie, and plenty more in the video below! Check out Norton's featurette on Captain America: Behind the Shield via Facebook: After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers for a new top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero devoted to defending American ideals.

Last week at this time we brought you a poster of Chris Evans as Captain America: The First Avenger punching Hitler’s face. Today we have some more goodies related to the upcoming superhero blockbuster. First up, the film has been screened for early press (those that work in magazines, etc.) and the response is reportedly terrific.
Devin Faraci from Bad Ass Digest has heard from multiple sources that the “film is great” and JoBlo reiterates that statement. Jeff Sneider from Variety has heard that people were “were very impressed” and “feel it might even be better than the first Iron Man.” That’s not a hard bridge to cross in my opinion, but that is besides the point. We’ll be getting another full-length trailer attached to Transformers: Dark of the Moon in a little over a week, but let’s move on to a new featurette from the film.

It seems like every day one of the countless comic book flicks that are in production comes out with new info (see Mark Ruffalo's tweet yesterday about 'The Avengers'). However, at least the 'Captain America' photos that were released today give us something substantial to analyze (and fawn over).
