While I don’t really see a Catherine Deneuve navigating the wintery sidewalks of Main Street, her co-star in Andrea Riseborough could easily be the mayor of Park City. French filmmaker tandem of Marco La Via and Hanna Ladoul broke out with micro indie film Anywhere with You (aka We the Coyotes) and quickly followed this up Funny Birds — a sophomore effort that pushes them into the heartwarming dramedy terrain. Production on the film took place in October of 2022. Morgan Saylor returns for a second time out with the filmmaker duo. SXSW could be trying to lasso the film as well.…...

"Homeland" continues to overshadow most modern entertainment thanks to its fast-paced action, alluring drama, and incredible acting. Starring Claire Danes, Damien Lewis, Mandy Patinkin, Rupert Friend, Morena Baccarin, and Morgan Saylor, the Showtime original series burst onto the air in 2011, capturing all the awards and garnering critical accolades. It faced challenges in its second and third seasons but made a triumphant return, steadily improving over the next four years.
Created by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, who happily incorporate elements from their other prestigious TV series, such as "24," "Homeland" follows CIA Agent Carrie Mathison (played by Claire Danes) as she attempts to uncover a dangerous secret held by Sgt. Nicholas Brody (played by Damien Lewis), who may or may not be a terrorist. The premise is clever, the writing is smart, and the storytelling is brilliant. Starring Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Mandy Patinkin, Rupert Friend, and Morena Baccarin, "Homeland" follows the life of Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody (Lewis) after a near-decade-long stint in captivity. He immediately falls under the scrutiny of resourceful (and bipolar) CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Danes). She believes he's become a terrorist. So begins a cat-and-mouse thriller filled with numerous twists and shocking moments.
Throughout its eight seasons, "Homeland" took its viewers on a wild emotional ride. After winning several awards amidst its premiere season in 2011, the spy series stumbled to live up to its hype. Eventually, showrunners Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon (of "X-Files" and "24" fame) shifted "Homeland" into a brilliant new direction -- carrying the show to a satisfying finale.
So, which season is the best that "Homeland" has to offer? Pop in some jazz music, grab a big bottle of wine, and read on to see every season of "Homeland" ranked worst to best.

"Bone-chilling, knee-buckling nastiness." Get ready for another acid trip horror film. Shudder has unveiled an official trailer for another indie horror film streaming soon titled Spoonful of Sugar, the latest from director Mercedes Bryce Morgan. This premiered at Fantastic Fest last year and also played at the Cucalorus Film Festival. A disturbed babysitter experiences a sexual awakening while using LSD to alternatively treat a seemingly “sick” kid. Morgan Saylor stars as Millicent, who is working on her thesis about children with severe allergies. She's hired to babysit Johnny, a sickly, mute child who suffers from every allergy under the sun. As she discovers Johnny's dark family secrets things begin to become unhinged. The cast includes Kat Foster, Danilo Crovetti, Myko Olivier, Danilo Crovetti, & Keith Powell. Looks like it gets extra wild with LSD sending everyone up the walls and all over the place. Maybe too much in one film? Or maybe not.

Whatever innocence is introduced in Mercedes Bryce Morgan's "Spoonful of Sugar" with the hummed tune of "Oh My Darling, Clementine" and glimpses of Christmas candy canes rots away like a forgotten fruit that rolls forever out of sight. Imagine "Mary Poppins" breakneck twisting into the darkness of "Orphan" or "Hard Candy." Leah Saint Marie's screenplay explores a drug-induced coming-of-age tale about a supposed hair-twirling babysitter's virgin's sexuality, but that's before Saint Marie balances out storytelling sweetness with an avalanche-pour of salty malevolence. "Spoonful of Sugar" is bone-chilling, knee-buckling nastiness that punishes every character with zero compassion — this ain't the twinkly-eyed fairy tale Morgan deceptively sells at the movie's onset.
Morgan Saylor stars as ponytailed and supposedly 21-year-old Millicent, who's just been hired by accomplished author Rebecca (Kat Foster) to babysit her allergy grab-bag of a son, Johnny (Danilo Crovetti). Millicent claims she's taking a summer hiatus from studies...

Bryan Wizemann’s You Mean Everything to Me is the first feature film I worked on as an A.C in New York. Before principal photography, production sent me the script and the lookbook, which introduced me to the abusive relationship at the center of the film. Nathan (Ben Rosenfield) comes off affable and attractive enough on the surface, but is dangerously worn inside from lying to others and himself. Perpetuating his particularly gangrenous insecurity, he habitually coerces partners into his ring of control. Cassandra (Morgan Saylor) just happens to meet him while she’s down on her luck, and finds herself spiraling into […]

Romance takes a predatory turn in You Mean Everything to Me, a film that explores the pattern by which a DJ named Nathan (Ben Rosenfield) begins to grip a vice around the life of Cassandra (Morgan Saylor), a waitress living out of her car after she’s evicted from her sister’s place. Writer-director Bryan Wizemann was inspired by a toxic relationship that befell a female friend of his—one which would go on to similarly troubling circumstances to those we see in the film, as Cassandra is manipulated into working as an erotic dancer at the club where Nathan DJs and, eventually, into the world of sex work against her will.
Wizemann is quite effective in his portrayal of a relationship where a man methodically removes his prey from any possible support system, alienating her from family, work, and friends. We are placed firmly into Cassandra’s perspective, as...

Persistence pays off. Bryan Wizemann has been painstakingly hacking away at indie film since 1998’s Sense following that with 2005’s Losing Ground, 2011’s About Sunny (TIFF) and finally his fourth feature in You Mean Everything to Me. The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 28 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 28; last year only 21 TV movies were submitted.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy spent eight years working on the script for their feature film debut, Amazon’s “Blow the Man Down,” about a pair of sisters who go deep into the underbelly of their New England hometown to cover up a crime. But the filmmakers’ relationship dates back further than that — to the days when they were shooting shorts and making music videos on Coney Island. They moved to Los Angeles at the same time and worked on sketch comedy videos. “We met behind the camera,” Krudy says. Cole adds, “It was so rare to meet another girl doing camera stuff.”
Not only do they have a love for cinematography, but both also come from Irish-Catholic families and have sisters. And they share a love of seaside towns. “I’m from Beverly, Massachusetts, and Krudy’s mother is from Maine,” Cole says.
Those commonalities helped early in the writing process.

There is always something extra inviting when it comes to small villages located by the sea. Let's take one from Practical Magic. It makes you want to go there, meet all the people, it makes you feel free and happy. But it's the opposite feeling in Easter Cove, Maine presented in indie noir, Blow the Man Down. Directed and written by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, the film tells the story of Connolly sisters - Priscilla (Sophie Lowe), and Mary Beth (Morgan Saylor). After their mother's passing, the sisters have to figure out the way to save the house from bankruptcy and keep up with their store that Mary Margaret left them. Unfortunately, nothing goes as planned. After a run-in with a dangerous man (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Mary Beth, with the help of Priscilla, tries to cover up his grim murder. Afterwards, both attempt to come back to their new normal; still,...

Chicago – One of the best character actors in the film and TV world is Margo Martindale. And, in a sense, she takes the spotlight this weekend in the new film, “Blow the Man Down,” available through Amazon Prime. Her role as bordello owner Enid Nora Devlin is a tour de force of duplicity, power and sheer originality.

Easter Cove is the sort of quaint port town that dots long stretches of the Northeastern seaboard’s coast, home to a community of fishermen and widows and maybe a drunken fuck-up or three. It’s the sort of small town that can seem cozy or claustrophobic; for Mary Beth Connolly (Homeland‘s Morgan Saylor), it’s definitely the latter. She’s hoping to go to “UMaine” next year for college, something she’s already postponed so she and her sister, Priscilla (Sophie Lowe), could take care of their dying...

The dark underbelly of a small town has provided cinematic fodder for generations. It’s just a lucrative source of storytelling. After a debut last year at the Tribeca Film Festival, another effort joins the fray, starting today, in Blow the Man Down, a surprisingly fun drama that slowly turns the screws. The material may sound serious and even grim, but it actually is handled with such a steady tone that it almost resembles something that the Coen Brothers would do, as opposed to a bleak expose. Amazon Studios has this one and will put it out on their service, so expect it to be one of the higher profile VOD options this weekend. The movie is a mix of drama and mystery, with actually a little bit of comedy thrown in for good measure. It’s set in the small Maine town of Easter Cove, a remote coastal fishing village.

It’s undoubtedly unfair to compare any and all quirky, darkly comic crime stories to past Coen brothers films, but sometimes its inescapable. So yes, directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy’s “Blow the Man Down” has a blend you might as well call Coen-esque: dark deeds and black humor in a scenic but quietly sinister locale, with some bloody and seriously twisted stuff thrown in for good measure.
But “Blow the Man Down” also has enough freshness to survive the comparison. Partly, that’s because this is a female-centric tale of nefarious dealings and violence, with men peripheral to the machinations of the wives, mothers and daughters who run the show in a remote coastal Maine town while their men are out fishing.
Partly, it’s because the likes of Margo Martindale, June Squibb and Annette O’Toole get juicy roles and know what to do with them.

Given the real world pandemic outside of our doors, few of us will be finding relief inside of a multiplex any time soon. But there is one gem on the horizon that you can easily watch from the comfort of your own home. The title? “Blow the Man Down,” a neo-noir set in the isolated fishing town of Easter Cove, Maine, in the dead of winter. It might seem like a snug and cozy burg filled with brawny men and salt of the earth women who regularly start their days and end their nights with a shot of whiskey. But the place is awash in crimes, misdemeanors and more than a few not-so-savory secrets.

Tucked in the rocky coastline of rural Maine, a grisly murder occurs late one night. A young woman stabs a man with a harpoon, later finding a bag of cash tucked under the floorboards of his seaside cabin. Unbeknownst to her, the man she’s killed is embroiled in a larger criminal scheme that goes back generations and includes a town brothel, a group of elderly women with a history of shady dealings, and the local cops who turn a blind eye.
If this sounds like the start to a Coen brothers’ movie, you’re right on the money. “Blow the Man Down,” the first feature from writer-director duo Danielle Krudy and Bridget Savage Cole, plays like an update on the Coen brothers’ crime comedies, balancing noir themes with dry humor and wit. "A lot of people underestimate women... That's why they get away with a lot." Amazon Prime has released an official trailer for a dark crime comedy titled Blow the Man Down, which originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. It also went on to play at the Toronto, Palm Springs, and Santa Barbara Film Festivals, as well as AFI Fest. While grieving for the loss of their mother, the Connolly Sisters suddenly find they have a crime to cover up after unintentionally killing a drunken fisherman, leading them deep into the underbelly of their salty Maine fishing village. The film stars Morgan Saylor and Sophie Lowe as Mary Beth and Priscilla Connolly, with Margo Martindale, June Squibb, Annette O'Toole, Will Brittain, Gayle Rankin, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. This Sunday, the final season of “Homeland” will finally arrive. Stars Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, showrunner Alex Gansa, and a lucky hundred or so of the rest of us got to see it Tuesday at the world premiere, which was held at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
The after-party played out at the Lobster Club, a few long city blocks over. For a “Homeland” fan, the evening was about as good as Tuesdays get. For so many former “Homeland” stars, it was a homecoming.
Below are a few of our non-spoilery takeaways from the nice-enough February night in Manhattan.

Nestled in between Sundance and Cannes, the Tribeca Film Festival isn’t exactly known for instigating a lot of fancy dealmaking, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of options. With 103 features screening between April 24 – May 5, the New York gathering contains its fair share of world premieres, many of which arrive sans distribution. The region of New England, Maine might just be the inverted Florida of the North. While Florida is the obvious hot, sweaty mess we want to ditch into the sea, Maine’s quirks are much more subtle, ambiguous and even deceptive. Secrets, history, baggage, people that keep their cards close to the chest, all of these inscrutable dynamics cleverly come into play with murder, grief, and crime in the inventive and original “Blow The Man Down.”

There’s a certain tingle that sets in when you realize that a thriller is naturalistic enough not to rely on thriller tricks. It means that you may be denied some of the knee-jerk pleasures audiences have come to expect — the jump scares and violent climaxes. The tradeoff is that it’s a lot easier to place yourself in the main characters’ shoes, to imagine what they’re going through as something that might actually be happening. And that, ironically, just ups the thriller juice.
“Blow the Man Down,” directed by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy (it’s their first feature), is a drama of murder, sex, and small-town secrets set in Easter Cove, a fishing village in Maine that brings to mind the windswept coastal town of “Manchester by the Sea” — in fact, the place is so tiny and barren and gnarled it makes Manchester by the Sea look like Rome.
