Ooh, this is fun news. Production has wrapped on Frankie Freako, the next film from one of Canada's purest genre stars, Steven Kostanski. The director of PG: Psycho Goreman, The Void and Manborg, is now tackling the little monster horror-comedy genre. His new film stars one of his Astron-6 bretheren Conor Sweeney. They play a "workaholic yuppie Conor Sweeney whose perfect life is turned upside down when he accidentally unleashes a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home". Sweeney is joined in the cast by another Astron-6 member, Adam Brooks (Father’s Day), and Kristy Wordsworth (The Spy Who Never Dies). Manborg. Father’s Day. The Void. Leprechaun Returns. Psycho Goreman. There’s been a throwback element to all of the feature films we’ve gotten from director Steven Kostanski so far, and his next feature will be no different. Variety has confirmed that production has wrapped on Kostanski’s horror comedy Frankie Freako, which is said to be a “commemoration of various practical FX-led projects including Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Ghoulies Go to College“. Well, if you say your movie pays tribute to Gremlins 2 and Ghoulies 3, you’ve already sold me on it.
Shout! Studio holds the U.S. distribution rights to Frankie Freako, but release plans have not yet been announced.

It seems as though Psycho Goreman isn’t the only hunky boy in filmmaker Steven Kostanski‘s cinematic universe; Variety reports horror comedy Frankie Freako is on the way.
While Psycho Goreman introduced writer/director Kostanski’s take on ’90s tokusatsu, centered around an intergalactic conquerer, Frankie Freako will unleash a maniacal rock-n-roll party monster.
Frankie Freako stars Conor Sweeney as he accidentally lets loose “a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home, led by the maniacal rock-n-roll party monster Frankie Freako. It’s a race against time as Conor must defeat the rambunctious ruffians and clean up their trail of destruction before his wife returns from her weekend work trip, all while going on an unexpected journey of self-discovery.”
Adam Brooks (Psycho Goreman) and Kristy Wordsworth star alongside Sweeney.

I have been a fan of the Italian giallo subgenre for 30 years since my initiation into it was precipitated by my first viewing of Creepers (1985), the severely cut version of Dario Argento’s Phenomena, my personal favorite film of his. Subsequent viewings of films by both Mr. Argento and his mentor, Mario Bava, as well as Lucio Fulci, Lamberto Bava, Luigi Cozzi, and Michele Soavi solidified a love for the putrid and the fantastic, and anyone who has seen these movies knows how delightfully entertaining they are: off-kilter camera angles, ludicrous dialogue, and what writer Todd French referred to as “a maddening narrative looseness” are present in these films in a way that they are absent in other genres. There is just nothing like an Italian giallo film. With all of the mock horror films that have been made going back to 1981’s Student Bodies and the later,...

The creative team of Astron 6 has completed The Editor. This film had its premiere in 2014, at the Toronto Int. Film Festival. Now, this giallo-inspired thriller is coming to several Canadian theatres, on Sept. 18th. This release will be followed up by another as The Editor releases on home entertainment formats, Oct. 6th. The film is a send-up starring Paz de la Huerta (Boardwalk Empire), Samantha Hill (Bad Meat), Laurence R. Harvey (The ABCs of Death 2), Adam Brooks (Manborg), Matthew Kennedy, Conor Sweeney, Tristan Risk and Udo Kier. Hopefully, actress Paz's appearance in this film has not ruined her career, forever. And now, fans can preview the film's horrifying launch here. The story follows an almost out-of-work editor. It is suspected that his desperation has led to murder. But, only Rey (Adam Brooks) believes in his innocence. Now, Rey must prove to others that he is not behind a series of murders,...

Directors Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy, two of the five partners from the Canadian film production company Astron-6, have reunited from their 2011 effort Father’s Day (a feature co-directed by all five members of their collective) for The Editor. Another reconstitution of vintage genre cinema, this time around they satirize the more ridiculous elements of the once popular giallo movement of film, those Italian thrillers often dubbed in English which gave rise to horror auteurs like Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, Sergio Martino, Emilio Miraglia, Mario Bava, and a host of others.
Incredibly silly but with enough moments of bloody gore to appeal to audiences who might have no idea exactly what Brooks and Kennedy are aping, the film is filled with charmingly deliberate jabs at unintentionally ridiculous flourishes from a bygone era. While its own narrative is so over-the-top it’s almost not even worth recounting, the film is fun,...

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a number of homages to the giallo genre including Peter Strickland’s clever, slightly bizarre and altogether mesmerizing thriller Berberian Sound Studio, a movie that pays tribute to the old-school cinematic craftsmanship of sound mixing and sound effects. The Editor, like Berberian Sound Studio, features a movie-within-a-movie only this time it’s the editor, not the foley artist, who gets the spotlight. Set in an Italian movie studio plagued by death, the film’s deceptively simple plot involves Rey Ciso (co-director Adam Brooks), a once prominent film editor who accidentally chopped off four of his fingers and is now forced to edit with one hand. Cisco becomes the prime suspect in a series of gruesome murders perpetrated upon the film’s cast. Certainly,...

Rey Ciso (Adam Brooks) was once the most celebrated film editor in the world, but ever since a lapse in judgement while working on the longest film ever made left him four fingers short he’s been relegated to cutting trashy genre movies for no-talent hacks. When cast members on his latest project start turning up dead the cop investigating the crimes, Det. Peter Porfiry (Matthew Kennedy), immediately sets his sights on Rey forcing the editor into a race against time to identify the real culprit before it’s too late. His efforts are complicated by several factors including the possibility that he may be the murderer after all. The list of suspects is as long as Dario Argento’s Giallo is terrible and includes Rey’s wife Josephine (Paz de la Huerta), an actor named Cal (Conor Sweeney) who’s benefiting from the newly available roles, Rey’s eager new assistant (Samantha Hill) and the head...

The term “giallo” initially refers to cheap yellow paperbacks, that were distributed in post-fascist Italy. For Italian audiences, the term is used to refer to any kind of thriller, regardless of where it was made. For English-speaking audiences, the term has over time come to refer to a very specific type of Italian-produced thriller that takes advantage of modern cinematic techniques to create a unique genre which unapologetically explores violence, sexual content, and taboo exploration. The giallo film genre proved to be a major influence on American slasher films but giallos remain stylistically different from American crime films.
The Editor is described as a tribute to the Italian giallo genre: A one-time (and now one-handed) master film editor toiling in the cinematic sweatshops of 1970s Italy becomes the prime suspect in a series of brutal murders, in this tribute to the 70′s thrillers of Mario Bava. Lucio Fulci and Dario Argento.

The warped geniuses at Astron-6, the collective responsible for the irresponsible beauty that was Father’s Day, have unleashed yet another jolt of cinematic insanity. Manborg is a goofy/smart satire of bargain basement sci-fi spectacles, CD-rom games and any number of junky toy-based Saturday morning cartoons. A direct descendent of Charles Band '80s-era exploitation fare such as Metalstorm: the Destruction of Jared Syn and Eliminators, it’s an unabashed love letter to kid-friendly "exploi-tainment."
Manborg begins, as most of these spectacles must, with a post-apocalyptic Earth. Hell has literally taken over the planet with armies of ferocious Nazi demons bent on destroying mankind. Dark Sky Films has taken the rights to Manborg and will release this nod to '80s sci-fi/fantasy in theaters and on DVD April 30th.
The armies of hell have taken over the Earth, and all that stands in the way of the villainous Count Draculon and humanity's total extinction is a motley crew of misfits led by the mighty Manborg: a warrior who's half-man, half-machine, but all hero.
Once a young soldier killed during the first war against hell, Manborg (Matthew Kennedy, Lazer Ghosts 2) reawakens in the future, rebuilt as a walking weapon and mankind's last hope. Struggling to learn the secret of his origins, Manborg unwittingly befriends a post-apocalyptic Australian punker (Conor Sweeney, Heart of Karl), a knife-wielding vixen (Meredith Sweeney, Father's Day) and a kung fu master (dubbed by Kyle Herbert of Dragon Ball Z, Street Fighter) before finally squaring off against Count Draculon (Adam Brooks,...

Horror has been in Canada's snow for decades now, starting with the classic Cannibal Girls and Black Christmasin the early '70s, through the classic early Cronenberg years of Shivers, Rabid and The Brood in the late '70s. In the '80s, we got films like Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine and The Gate. In the past decade, we've had flicks like the Ginger Snaps series, Cube and PontyPool. In fact, you could even count the last three Dead movies by George A. Romero as Canadian — after all, he is a Canadian citizen now and made all three films in Toronto.
Being both a film writer and a host of a monthly horror film series called Fright Nights at the Projection Booth (based out of Toronto, Canada), I have noticed an incredible renaissance of grindhouse and horror directors coming out of Canada in the past few years. Southern Ontario,...

Now here's a boxed set tailor made for you Quiet Earth readers who we know are fans of weird and wonderfully demented cinema. Holy fucking shit. Astron-6 is a film collective custom made for Twitch if there ever was one. This five man short film wrecking crew from Winnipeg have blasted on to the big screen in an impressive way in the last few months. First they premiered post-apocalyptic Mortal Kombat styled action film Manborg at Fantastic Fest in September, and only a couple of weeks later they took their second feature Father's Day to Toronto After Dark where is destroyed audiences and came away with tons of awards. This two disc collection from Troma shows where the team came from and gives you a good overview of their myriad influences and sensibilities. If you can't find something to laugh at and enjoy in this four hour set,...

After six years, Toronto After Dark is bigger than ever. The films are better, the lines are longer and the fan-frenzy is wilder. This year’s chilling selection included: civil war zombies, creepy abductors, cliff-hanging killers, post-apocalyptic insanity and suburban hell – a sci-fi horror fan’s paradise.
Writer-director John Geddes’ Exit Humanity is a post-civil war zombie epic set in 1870’sTennessee. When his wife and son fall victim to the undead, Edward Young (Mark Gibson in a breakout performance) flees across the countryside for survival, but zombies are the least of his worries after he’s captured by a band of ruthless Confederate soldiers who are obsessed with conducting medical experiments. Geddes‘ concept of zombies in the old west is a fresh perspective on the popular genre. The film’s use of animation (a budgetary decision) advances the action excellently and the beautiful cinematography makes this a great-looking period movie.

Manborg
Directed by Steven Kostanski
2011, 60 minutes, Canada
In Manborg, scenes are repeatedly stolen by a borderline illiterate, wildly Australian 1980′s Billy Idol lookalike packing twin energy pistols that grow out of his hands and a knack for posing.
What’s that?
You need to know more?
I disagree, but will nonetheless proceed.
Coming at you from Astron-6 productions and the mind of writer/director Steven Kostanski, Manborg is a genre-mashing love letter to a childhood spent watching 1980′s cult television and the cut scenes in early 1990′s computer games.
In a similar vein to Alugro’s Italian Spiderman or fellow Canadian Lee Demarbe’s Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, Manborg brings utter sincerity to a story that could easily have had the fun sucked out of it by overly self-conscious delivery or winking at the audience. Yeah they know the source material is kind of stupid but they also know it...

That's right! Following the mind-blowing world premiere of Astron-6's first feature length film, Manborg, at Fantastic Fest 2011, Troma is releasing a DVD compilation of their many short films. You may remember Lazer Ghosts 2: Return to Lazer Cove from our coverage of that brilliant piece a few years ago. You have also seen the posters and updates for their remake of Father's Day, premiering tomorrow night at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. Well, here's even more great stuff from one of our favorite independent film companies! The promotional material from Troma was a little bit vague, so I asked the guys at Astron-6 for a little bit of detail regarding what we can look forward to, and this is what they had to say:...

The plot keywords for "Manborg" on the Fantastic Fest website are: action, comedy, sci-fi, and bizarre. To which I would add the following: goofy, violent, funny, cheap, and charming. The mythos of this film is huge. There's a cataclysmic war between the armies of man and hell, a dystopian future ruled by drippy-skinned demons, chase scenes on hoverbikes, and massive sci-fi battles. If Hollywood tried to remake "Manborg," the movie would cost at least $150,000,000. I suspect director Steven Kostanski's budget had at least five less zeros.
Stylistically, the movie looks and sounds like a really impressive cinematic from a Sega CD launch title circa 1992. The backgrounds are flat, the effects are crude, the voice dubbing is laughable, and the entire film looks like it was shot in front of a green screen with an old camcorder. All of that is by design. "Manborg" follows in the footsteps of recent...
