Updated, 12:50 Pm: Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut film is on the move, again. And the new date is a familiar one. Two months after Warner Bros. shuffled The Watchers back by a week to the June 14-16 Fathers Day frame, the pic is headed back to its original June 7 date.
It’ll have some action-packed company that Friday, going against Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the long-gestating fourth film in the nearly 30-year-old franchise. Lionsgate’s The Crow remake also was set for June 7, but that pic flew away from the date about three weeks ago and now is set for August 23.
Warners Bros. is hoping to cater to a female audience with The Watchers.
Also opening wide on June 7 is Vertical Entertainment’s The Exorcism directed by Joshua John Miller.

With M. Night long established and now daughter Ishana stepping up her own career, the Shyamalan family filmmaking business is trundling ahead nicely. Having served as second unit director on Old and being a key member of the Servant creative team, Ishana Night Shyamalan is making her feature directorial debut with The Watched, which stars Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell and Olwen Fouéré. Check out the first trailer for the horror thriller right here:
Fanning here plays Mina, an artist who becomes stranded in a giant, untouched forest somewhere in Ireland. Stumbling on a mysterious glass-walled home, she thinks she might have found safe shelter.
But no! As it turns out, she's soon trapped alongside three strangers who are watched all night by unseen, peculiar creatures. What's really going on? It's a Shyamalan film, so we're expecting some surprises.
Adapted from Am Shine's novel by Ishana Night Shyamalan and produced by M.

Per its official description, “The Watchers” follows Mina (Fanning), a 28-year-old artist “who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.”
In the eerie trailer, Mina looks at a wall made entirely of glass. She’s informed that it’s actually a one-way window; every night the group is watched by a sinister audience, and Mina is just the latest addition to the cast.

FX is developing a limited series adaptation of Ayad Akhtar’s acclaimed 2020 novel “Homeland Elegies,” with Kumail Nanjiani attached to produce and star.
Described as “raucous and searing,” Akhtar’s novel “blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of identity and belonging in post-Trump America. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home.”
Nanjiani will star in and executive produce the eight-episode limited series, which is being produced by FX Productions.
Akhtar will adapt the novel himself with Oren Moverman, who will also direct. Both will also serve as executive producers alongside Nanjiani and Sight Unseen’s Julia Lebedev and Eddie Vaisman, as well as Nimitt Mankad through Inimitable Pictures.

Still relatively new in the distrib game, Bleecker Street has been keen on including film fest premieres for their individual film release strategies and something tells me that Captain Fantastic could follow suit. Another film item I called a little too early for a 2015 Sundance showing, might be leaning towards a Sundance showing when we factor in that the filmmaker Matt Ross saw his debut film 28 Hotel Rooms receive some TLC from the festival. Recently named to Variety’s Top 10 Directors to Watch List, this stars Viggo Mortensen, Missi Pyle, Steve Zahn, Kathryn Hahn, George MacKay, Erin Moriarty and Frank Langella.
Gist: In the film, a father (Mortensen), devoted to teaching his six children how to live and survive in the deep forests of the Pacific Northwest, is forced to leave his self-created paradise. When confronted with the real world, he begins a journey that challenges his ideas of freedom...

Unlike say a micro-budgeted indie with enough coin in the backend for post-production, chances are slim that this modestly priced indie with A-list cast which already locked in a distrib in Bleecker Street folks would have been readied for the festival. But, I’m not counting it out just yet. Starring Viggo Mortensen (see set pic above with director on the left), Missi Pyle, Steve Zahn, Kathryn Hahn, George MacKay (check out our interview), Erin Moriarty and Frank Langella, Captain Fantastic is actor Matt Ross’ sophomore effort. It happens to directly follow in the footsteps of the Sundance accepted, under-the-radar, financially more tight budgeted 28 Hotel Rooms (2012) which was preceded by, more than a decade before it, his short film (also a Sundance selection) entitled, The Language of Love (1997). It’ll be a race to the finish line if included.
