Search Party is one of those shelved Black List productions you so desperately want to succeed, if only for its cast of on-the-bubble, breakout-seeking lead actors. T.J. Miller, Thomas Middleditch and Adam Pally are all star-worthy comedians (Silicone Valley/The Final Girls/Night Owls/Happy Endings), but Scot Armstrong’s directorial debut struggles to muster its own frat-comedy voice (Armstrong wrote a majority of Todd Phillips’ films). There are funny moments, and enjoyably deranged comedic beats, but they’re sandwiched between characters who only find humor in offensive insults and an obsession with Middleditch’s dangling member. It’s no direct-to-dvd Road Trip sequel, but stoner comedy of the highest order this is not – pun intended.
Armstrong’s wild ride begins when Jason (T.J. Miller) and Evan (Adam Pally) ruin their best friend’s wedding, sending the depressed groom, Nardo (Thomas Middleditch), into an emotional draught. With his heart still broken,...

Clearly the abysmal reaction to and box office performance of Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot hasn’t put actor Michael B. Jordan off from appearing in comic book based movies in general, as it’s being reported that he’s signed on to star in a big-screen adaptation of Dark Horse graphic novel, Blood Brothers.
MGM is producing the flick, which is described as a buddy action-comedy with horror elements – as in, the main characters are vampires. Here’s the synopsis for the graphic novel by Etan Cohen, Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller:
After a century of friendship, smoking opium with Genghis Khan and having orgies in Michelangelo’s studio, two inseparable vampire buddies are on the verge of splitting up. Terrible timing, as an apocalypse-obsessed villain is plotting an end to humanity. Looks like Nick and Tree, immortal best buds getting by as bail bondsmen, are humanity’s last hope…...

It's good to know Michael B. Jordan's experiences working on the recent Fantastic Four reboot haven't put him off comic book movies for life, as The Wrap reports that the Chronicle actor's next project is looking likely to be an adaptation of Dark Horse's horror comedy graphic novel from Etan Cohen, Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller, Blood Brothers. Apparently Jordan is in negotiations with MGM to play one of the leads in the movie. which is described as a "buddy picture involving two party-loving vampires/best friends who team up to take on a villain obsessed with the apocalypse and destroying humanity." Scot Armstrong, the screenwriter who has had a hand in such zany comedies as Road Trip, Semi-Pro and The Hangover Part II, is set to make his directorial debut on Universal Pictures' Search Party. This could prove a breakout for Armstrong, since he not only is working from a 2010 Black List script penned by Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller, but also has gathered a promising ensemble cast stacked with comedy cutups and talented television stars. The Wrap reports Alison Brie from Mad Men and Community fame is the latest to sign on to Search Party, joining a cast that includes College Humor Originals' Thomas Middleditch, Cloverfield's T.J. Miller, Happy Endings' Adam Pally, and Raising Hope's Shannon Woodward. Miller and Pally star as two roommates forced to go on a hilarious road trip/rescue mission when their friend Nardo (Middleditch) finds himself stranded and nude in Mexico.

Even though the screenplay for Scot Armstrong.s upcoming film Search Party . originally written by Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller . was on the 2010 Blacklist, it still got a rewrite by first-time director Armstrong himself (whose most recent credits include The Hangover Part II and Road Trip 2: Beer Pong). Nothing would be better than for this film to be the complete opposite of derivative, but that might be asking too much. At least the cast should be able to help. Search Party has added Shannon Woodward as a female lead, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Woodward is probably most famous for her role as Jimmy.s romantic interest on Fox.s Raising Hope, though she was also in the FX series The Riches a few years ago. As far as features go, she.ll next be seen starring with John Cusack and Emma Roberts in Scott Coffey.s Adult World,...

WonderCon 2013 kicked off today in Anaheim, CA, and the first bit of news out of the show has arrived from Dark Horse Comics, who announced Blood Brothers, a new miniseries by writers Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller that takes friendship to an entirely new level.
From the Press Release:
With interiors by Evan Shaner (Buddy Cops, Eerie, Green Hornet Year One) and covers by Juan Doe (Legion of Monsters, Iron Man Legacy), this vampire buddy action series is sure to be the talk of the summer at local comic shops.
“Our goal with Blood Brothers was to create a comic with the feel of a classic buddy action comedy, like Lethal Weapon or Rush Hour, but with two vampires as the heroes,” said Andrew Waller. “It’s really a story about two regular guys, who just happen to be vampires. They’ve treated the last millennium like a thousand-year bender...

With the publication of the 2010 Black List another compilation of the year's best unproduced screenplays has arrived. This is the fifth year that The Black List has been in existence, and its purpose is to shine a spotlight on what 290 film executives think are some of the best creative executions of ideas worthy for the big screen.
To be nominated and included on The Black List a screenplay can't have been released in 2010. As well, the minimum number of votes that a screenplay needed to have to warrant inclusion on the list is five. Several of the projects listed on Tbl are in development and will be released in the next twelve months. Others might have heat but take years to reach theaters, and there are also many that will never be greenlighted.

Every year, film executive Franklin Leonard releases his list, called The Black List, of most-liked unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. This year's list was compiled from the suggestions of 290 film executives, each of whom picked up to ten of their favorite scripts. Since the list started in 2004, many screenplays ended up being turned into films. In 2005, two of the top three scripts were "Lars and the Real Girl" which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and "Juno" which actually won the Oscar. See The 2010 Black List below, broken up by how many votes each screenplay received. Keep in mind, some of the projects are already in the works. 49 Votes: * College Republicans (by Wes Jones): Based on true events. The Black List started in 2005 when Franklin Leonard was working for Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company. Leonard was getting drowned in sub-par spec scripts, so he sent an e-mail out to his industry contacts looking for the best unproduced scripts out there. The 2005 Black List and the 2006 Black List were undeniably important in getting a fresh batch of writers on the Hollywood scene. Since then, too many people know about the party and the studio system has learned that people are paying attention. That means that increasingly, scripts have been lobbied into the Black List. [Note: I have no actual evidence I would be able to share, disclose or show you that proves this, so file that assertion under: "Things Dave thinks and gets to write because he's squatted on that soapbox long enough to get squatter's rights."]This year: the majority of the Black List Top Ten has already been sold or optioned. I'm not sure how helpful it is to make a list of good In Production scripts. Certainly less helpful to writer's churning out material that keeps getting passed over (or people who have Not starred in Prison Break...

Back in 2004, a list was compiled of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood of that year. This came to be known as The Black List. It was all started by a young executive at Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way, who polled 90+ peers to send him their 10 favorite, new, unproduced screenplays to read over the holidays. It has since become a tradition at the end of every year, in December, to release this list, which is voted on by a group of individuals in the entertainment industry from producer assistants, talent agency individuals, and many people involved with film development all the way up to VP's.
The 2010 Black List is here, and thanks to Deadline we have the list of best unproduced screenplays. Most of the scripts we've heard of, many of them are in production, some have already wrapped filming, they just wont be released until next year.

Every year, studio executive Franklin Leonard compiles the “Black List,” a collection of the best unproduced screenplays as voted on by 300 execs and high-level assistants. The 2010 list is the sixth of its kind to bring additional awareness to Hollywood’s hottest scripts.
Topping the list this year is Wes Jones’ College Republicans, a Social Network-esque story (read my script review here) about the underhanded election of Karl Rove to a National College Republican seat, managed by strategy wunderkind Lee Atwater. Shia Labeouf is attached to play Atwater and Paul Dano as Rove. Previous Black List leaders include 2008’s The Beaver, which became a long-delayed film directed by Jodie Foster and starring Mel Gibson, and 2009’s The Muppet Man, which remains on the shelf.

The Black List has been released. The annual list is compiled with a poll of 300 (up from last year's 250) development executives and high-level assistants, and contains a ranking of the hot screenplays making the rounds in Hollywoodland, which were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2010 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year. Basically, the black list contains the hottest projects in Hollywood that you haven't heard of yet. Note: The headline is a slightly inaccurate, because a lot of these screenplays have already been acquired (six of the top ten listed), a bunch are in production now, and some have even finished production. One of this year's top ten screenplays, J.C. Chandor's Margin Call, about the last 24 hours at now-defunct investment bank Lehman Brothers is already in the can and set to premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival with Chandor at the helm...

Frank Leonard is the most popular man in Hollywood today. This fine December day marks the release of the 6th annual Black List, a ranked collection of the top un-produced screenplays in the town, compiled by Leonard. Last year the top script was The Muppet Man from Christopher Weekes about “the life and times of the late Jim Henson.” Coming in second was Aaron Sorkin‘s The Social Network script, which is a current frontrunner to sweep the Oscars. The year before was The Beaver, now starring Mel Gibson and set for a release in 2011.
