Mark Johnson has produced some of the most distinctive movies and TV shows of the past 40 years. Think “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Rain Man,” “The Notebook,” “The Holdovers,” “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.”
Yet Johnson was a surprise choice by AMC Networks to lead its massive investment in building out the Anne Rice literary universe in multiple TV series. AMC bought the TV rights to Rice’s literary vault of Southern Gothic vampire tales in 2020.
Four years later, AMC has two successful Rice-based series on the air — “Interview With the Vampire” and “Mayfair Witches” — and a third hot prospect in development: “Talamasca,” which explores a mysterious society within the Rice universe. Johnson had little experience with the fantasy and horror genres. But he was the perfect person to steer the Rice initiative, in part because he’s not steeped in the conventions and tropes of fantasy fiction, according to Dan McDermott,...

End-of-the-year movie awards season is in full swing as we see the release of a film focused on a profession that has had a complex Hollywood history. Often these characters are heroes or villains, with minimal “grey area”. It’s not the police or politicians or even used car dealers. This weekend’s new release is set in the courts, and it’s not basketball, rather the lead is a lawyer. Many times they’re portrayed as sleazy, corrupt “ambulance-chasers”. Or they’re noble ” seekers of the truth” ala’ ninety-plus defender of the innocent Perry Mason, who made a huge impact on TV after becoming an icon in “dime novels”, early “talkies”, and radio. Oscar winner Jamie Foxx (Ray) stars as a lawyer with an incredible track record and Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive) plays his newest client in Prime Video’s The Burial. And a word of warning for those who dislike spoilers: While the trailer’s entertaining, you may want to steer clear of the nearly three-minute video as it gives away a lot of the plot.
Joining Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx in the R-rated drama are Jurnee Smollett (Lovecraft Country), Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World Dominion), Pamela Reed (NCIS: Los Angeles), Bill Camp (American Rust), and Alan Ruck (Succession). For actress Stephanie Beatriz, originating a new character for Peacock’s live-action adaptation of the PlayStation video game “Twisted Metal” — one who doesn’t utter a word in the series premiere — presented a unique and irresistible challenge.
“I love original storytelling,” she told TheWrap. “I think that’s what drew me to these scripts because my character is not even in the games. It’s a fully new character, fully new backstory, fully new world.
“The world opens up more and more every episode,” she added. “It’s in a way limitless.”
Beatriz plays Quiet, a badass axe-wielding car thief that acts purely on instinct. She comes from a community that oppressed her into silence and goes on to form an unlikely, antagonistic bond with John Doe (Anthony Mackie) as she becomes clouded by her need for revenge.

Anthony Mackie was eager to enter the demolition derby-style world of “Twisted Metal.”
The Marvel actor — who stars as John Doe, an amnesiac driver transporting goods across a war-torn nation — told TheWrap that he and his team were looking for a “different type of energy” than his previous projects when he signed onto the PlayStation video game adaptation for Peacock.
“It was actually about me just being able to show a different side of myself. This business can bog you down and you lose that lighthearted side of yourself if that’s what you’re pigeonholed into,” he explained. “So my team and I would look for something that was more comedic, something that I could just run around and have fun with.”
Mackie said he played plenty of PlayStation while growing up in New Orleans. One of his first video games was “Twisted Metal.

Five minutes into Peacock’s new horror comedy series “Twisted Metal,” it’s evident that the main character of John Doe – an amnesiac driver transporting goods across a war-torn nation – was written more as a vehicle for Anthony Mackie than for the gamers that sustained the original Sony Playstation franchise that inspired it.
Originally a wildly popular 1995 vehicular combat battle game, “Twisted Metal” has had over ten iterations and is the longest-running original title on the platform. The Peacock series is a live-action comedic adaptation created by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and written by Michael Jonathan Smith (“Cobra Kai”).
Those looking for a faithful video game adaptation should hold their applause until the end. Unlike recent shows like “The Last of Us” or “Halo,” the source material for this show is too convoluted to be adapted directly. However, those looking for sequences of vehicular-related carnage should be pleased.

This is just the latest in a string of cuts, including Walker‘s prequel series Walker: Independence. The Supernatural spinoff’s Scooby gang is about to score a huge win: Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) finally finds her missing monster-slaying dad Samuel (Tom Welling) in the December 5 midseason finale of The Winchesters. (Season 1’s six remaining episodes air in 2023.) But first, she and the other hunters have to destroy the arachnoid alien creatures known as the Akrida, along with their possessed leader, radio host Rockin’ Roxy (Bridget Regan), who has been using her show to lure rare beasts to Lawrence, Kansas. The good news: The group has a solid lead and is riding the broadcast waves straight to Roxy — as is Samuel. Tracking down Samuel, of course, is “really going to complicate things,” says executive producer Robbie Thompson, for both Mary and her hunter-in-training love interest John Winchester (Drake Rodger). Skip Bolen/The CW Mary has vowed to quit hunting if her dad is found…and possibly leave Lawrence altogether.

Paul Walker movies: Few worthwhile efforts away from the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise (photo: Paul Walker in ‘Hours’) (See previous post: “Paul Walker Dead: Fast and Furious Actor Killed in Fiery Car Crash.”) Aside from the Fast and Furious franchise, Paul Walker was featured in about 15 movies since the turn of the century; most of those were little-seen releases that did nothing to expand his following beyond fans of slick, high-speed shenanigans, e.g., John Glenn’s thriller and straight-to-dvd release The Lazarus Project (2008), co-starring Piper Perabo; Wayne Kramer’s box office bomb Running Scared, with Vera Farmiga; John Stockwell’s mix of deep-sea adventure and crime thriller Into the Blue, with Jessica Alba and Josh Brolin; and another straight-to-dvd effort, Mukunda Michael Dewil’s poorly received thriller Vehicle 19 (2013). Paul Walker’s handful of more prestigious and/or successful films were Clint Eastwood’s World War II drama Flags of Our Fathers...

You may already know that I’m a fan of ABC Family generally, and Pretty Little Liars theoretically, and Ravenswood looks to continue with the background perspective that has resulted in this view. Pretty Little Liars has managed a popularity that is nothing short of amazing, despite being a show that might seem to have a built-in maximum longevity, and the show is now spinning-off to the not-absolutely-similar Ravenswood.
We follow Caleb Rivers (Tyler BlackBurn), Hanna’s boyfriend (or whatever), to the town of Ravenswood, because some curious things happen that seem to connect to him and/or his family. We enter the show straight off the back of the Pretty Little Liars Halloween Special, and before you know what’s happened, Caleb and Miranda Collins (Nicole Gale Anderson) have stumbled upon their own graves, complete with pictures, and they’d like to know what’s going on there.

The disc includes hits "Unison," "100% in the Bitch" and "Spitfire," along with Knife Party's remix of "Unison," which stands among the more popular DJ set staples today, as evidenced by Swedish House Mafia's epic finale of their first Masquerade Motel Show in Miami last month.
With a catalog that boasts the fiery electro smash "Say My Name," one of the seminal songs that helped forge PR as an Edm rookie to watch for in 2012, comes news of another mammoth creation.

On the same day his band announced they were canceling the remainder of their U.S. tour due to his "vocal issues and exhaustion," Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill was in New York, where he told a TMZ cameraman he was focused on healing.
"I'm just trying to get better," Followill said while walking with his wife, model Lily Aldridge.
One Fan's Take: "If The Performance Would Have Suffered, Respect Their Decision"
On Monday, the Kings of Leon scrapped their tour in the wake of a disastrous Dallas show during which Followill repeatedly complained about the heat and then abruptly left the stage after announcing to the crowd at the Gexa Energy Pavilion, "I'm gonna go backstage and I'm gonna vomit.

Mixtape Daily gears up for post-prison music from T.I. and Mobb Deep's Prodigy, along with more from Young Money/ Cash Money.

Arrests and court cases dominated the hip-hop headlines last year, but with Lil Wayne free and a host of new stars ready to take the next step, 2011 should bring some better days.
Drake is expected to drop Take Care, the follow-up to his debut, and the entire Young Money/ Cash Money crew has their sights set on world domination (can we also get a world tour?). There are still some MCs behind bars, but T.I. and Mobb Deep's Prodigy will be out soon, and hopefully acts like Young Jeezy, 50 Cent and Nas can rebound from rap purgatory with projects worthy of their talents. Here, Mixtape Daily presents part two in our preview of stories to follow in the new year.

"Glee" has landed some big fish so far: Madonna, Rihanna, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. But one act that isn't interested in having its music remixed for the McKinley High kids is Kings of Leon.
The scruffy Tennessee arena rockers told England's New Musical Express that they declined a chance to have their music worked over into peppy glee club arrangements — as well as an invitation to appear on the now-canceled "Ugly Betty" — for fear of selling out.
"We got an offer to appear on an episode of 'Ugly Betty,' " bassist Jared Followill said. "They wanted us to play ourselves. We were supposed to come in and help her out with some problem or other." He also confirmed that they passed on the "Glee" offer,...

'Toxic health hazard' of the bird attack forces band to leave stage after three songs.
By Gil Kaufman

It's one thing when fans pelt you with shoes, water bottles, coins or, in the case of Kings of Leon, lacy underthings. But when pigeons rain down black and white hell from above, well, that's just too much. The sibling band just couldn't take the assault on Friday night, when some rats-with-wings in the rafters at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in St. Louis opened fire on them.
The Grammy-winning group had to pull the plug on the gig after three songs when an infestation of birds above the stage bombed them so badly they felt they couldn't carry on. A spokesperson from the group's management said they had to bail after bassist Jared Followill was strafed during the opening moments of the show.

Chicago – There have been TV cops in New York, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and even Hawaii, 5-0, so it stands to reason that Memphis, Tennessee, would get its turn. Jason Lee (“My Name is Earl”) and Alfre Woodard are on the “Memphis Beat,” premiering June 22nd on the TNT Network.
TV Rating: 2.5/5.0
Lee portrays Memphis plainclothes detective Dwight Hendricks, an unconventional (are there any other type of TV cop?) who seems not just to live and work in Memphis, but completely embody the town within his DNA. As Dwight and his detective partner ‘Whitehead’ (Sam Hennings) are introduced, they are investigating a brutal convenience store robbery. There is some comic relief among the carnage, though, as a Barney Fife-type uniform Officer Sutton (DJ Qualls).
Back at the station house – populated by Elvis impersonators for some reason – there is a new no-nonsense administrator (are there are other type…), Lt. Tanya Rice...

Chicago – Writer Peter Morgan and actor Michael Sheen have collaborated once again to tell another chapter of the political life of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. In “The Special Relationship,” the award-winning writer focuses on the dynamic between the leader and another of the most notable figures of the last century, President Bill Clinton (Dennis Quaid). Great performances elevate what is a relatively minor piece when compared to “The Queen”.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0
“The Special Relationship” starts in 1992, as Bill Clinton was rising to power and Blair was not yet Prime Minister. The film quickly moves forward to 1996, when Blair was elected after support from his U.S. counterpart. The title of Morgan’s film refers to a political phrase about relationships between leaders of friendly countries. For example, the U.S. has a “special relationship” with Israel. However, Morgan’s film, directed by Richard Loncraine, goes much deeper in...

Drake's long-awaited collaboration with Kanye West finally hit the Internet early Thursday morning (April 29). The pulsating "Find Your Love" was released on the Toronto Mc's Web site (though it has since been taken down due to bandwidth issues).
The track was produced by West and features Drake in full crooner mode as he sings about saving his relationship.
"I'm more than just an option," he sings over sparse drums and piano licks. "Refuse to be forgotten/ I took a chance with my heart/ And I feel it taking over / I better find your loving/ I better find your heart."
"Find Your Love" is Drake's second official single from his debut album Thank Me Later, due June 15. Lead selection "Over" came out in March; "Shut It Down," featuring The-Dream, leaked soon...

Chicago – The great Al Pacino has struggled over the last few years, appearing in total junk like “88 Minutes” and “Righteous Kill,” but one is immediately reminded of his incredible skill mere minutes into the HBO telefilm “You Don’t Know Jack,” debuting April 24th, 2010. Overall, the dramatization of the controversy surrounding Jack Kevorkian and his beliefs about assisted suicide from Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson works because of its great cast but doesn’t quite connect like the best HBO productions of recent years.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0
In the opening scenes of “You Don’t Know Jack,” Dr. Jack Kevorkian (Pacino) is playing poker with his buddies and arguing the merits of assisted suicide while a friend notes that most people who know him call him a nut. The focus of the film is clear. Don’t expect much background on Kevorkian or how he got to the point where he would...

Chicago – For fans of “The Wire,” expectations are ludicrously high for HBO’s “Treme” (pronounced “tre-may”), the newest dramatic work from David Simon and Eric Overmyer. Two of the creative voices behind one of the best television programs of all time have turned their focus from Baltimore to New Orleans and lost none of their dramatic resonance, delivering an incredibly rewarding show that will have viewers tapping their feet to the rhythm of a city that doesn’t just “enjoy” or “play” music, it needs it to survive.
Television Rating: 5.0/5.0
Unlike a lot of programs or films about musical cities (the many Motown stories, even most musician biopics, etc.), the healing and communicative power of music is not merely the background for melodrama on “Treme”. In a show named after a musical section of New Orleans, it is a part of the fabric of the lives of every single character.

Ross e-mailed MTV News late Monday night to make the announcement, which came two weeks to the day after he told us that he and Walker were at a loss for just what to call their new retro-leaning band. (Of course, we tried to help out the best we could.)
