Spier Films will serve as a co-production partner on Kelsey Egan’s upcoming sci-fi thriller “Outer Edges.” Led by Mike Auret, the Cape Town and London-based production, financing and sales company is behind the likes of Berlinale Golden Bear winner “U-Carmen eKhayelitsha” and Mads Mikkelsen-starrer “The Salvation.”
Egan’s film, in advanced development and about to be unveiled at Frontieres’ Forum, will focus on a group of space travelers on their way to a new Earth. As they get stranded on a strange planet, they are confronted by alternate versions of themselves.
“What would it be like, having to face yourself? How would it feel if your past choices turned out to be poor? It’s not very often that you find something as thought-provoking and human,” Egan told Variety at Fantasia, praising the script by Rob Klecha and Magnus Aspli.

As the growing coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt film and television production across the globe, the South African industry is bracing for the impact of the virus’s spread as the government announced a raft of emergency measures, including a travel ban on foreign nationals from the U.S. and the U.K.
The ban cast a shadow of uncertainty over one of the world’s leading hubs for international film and television shoot, where studio productions, such as Sony Pictures’ Vin Diesel actioner “Bloodshot,” are a major source of work for local crew, contractors and talent.
Privately some South African producers said they’re racing to make sense of the fast-moving situation and bracing for a wave of interruptions to the thriving production services industry. Others, meanwhile, are showing resolve in the face of an unprecedented crisis.

Durban — Financing African films has always required equal parts imagination and hustle, and as the global movie industry weathers its own seismic upheaval from new financing and distribution challenges, filmmakers on the continent are learning to adapt on the fly.
That was the takeaway of a Durban FilmMart panel July 21, where Dayo Ogunyemi, an investor and founder of 234 Media; Chioma Onyenwe, a producer and the director of the Africa Int’l. Film Festival; Todd Brown, head of international acquisitions at Xyz Films; and Michael Auret, a producer with Spier Films, reckoned with the transformation in how filmmakers today are forced to do business.
“The pre-sales market is becoming progressively harder and harder,” said Brown, whose company was the North American sales agent for recent South African fest hits “Five Fingers for Marseilles” and “Number 37,” and is developing an adaptation of South African sci-fi novel “Apocalypse Now Now.” “That model...

A film as lost as it’s characters, Young Ones is what happens when big ideas meet terrible execution and a lackluster script, combining for a film that’s a chore to watch.
Young Ones is an epic film, a neowestern sci-fi film, spilt into chapters to show what happens when scarce resources force people to the breaking point. Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) lives and works on the harsh frontier, delivering supplies to the workers on the water line with his son Jerome (Kodi Smit McPhee). Meanwhile at home his daughter Mary (Elle Fanning) is tired of the struggles and wants a better life, something presented to her in the form of Flem Lever (Nicholas Hoult). Unbeknownst to the clan, Lever has bigger designs than just Mary and longs to have Ernrest’s land for himself and to return it to it’s former glory.

Nicholas Hoult will be spotty poet Rik and Michael Shannon the mysteriously cool Mike in the student comedy drama... No, sorry, that's not true. The Young Ones heading into production in this case is a futuristic thriller directed by Jake Paltrow, and nothing to do with the old Rik Mayall comedy show. Hoult and Shannon have just come aboard though, along with Elle Fanning (Super 8, We Bought a Zoo) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, The Road). It's sounding as if Smit-McPhee has the nominal lead, since the film centers on a 14-year-old boy fighting to survive through wit and guile in a violent nea- future where water has become the most precious resource (cough-Tank Girl-cough). The roles for the other three remain unclear for now.Paltrow got his start directing for television, on the likes of NYPD Blue. His first feature was 2007's dark comedy The Good Night,...

As young Nicholas Hoult's star continues to rise with lead roles in the likes of Jack The Giant Slayer and Warm Bodies, Variety report that he is also set to headline a new sci-fi flick alongside General Zod himself, Michael Shannon. The movie, which is apparently "set in a violent near-future where water has become the most precious -- and fastest-dwindling -- resource on the planet", will be written and directed by Gwyneth Paltrow's brother Jake and produced by Subotica's Tristan Orpen Lynch and Spier Films' Michael Auret, who reckons "Jake's engaging tale of hope and courage in a neo-realistic dystopia will have universal appeal." The film has actually already begun production in South Africa's Northern Cape desert.
