When USC professor and hip-hop scholar Todd Boyd remembers hearing Tupac Shakur’s scathing diss track “Hit ‘Em Up,” he knew one thing: “This is not going to end well.”
The West Coast anthem was released in June 1996 and Shakur viciously took aim at his East Coast rivals, including the Notorious B.I.G. with claims — through strikingly chosen words — that he slept with Biggie’s wife, R&b singer Faith Evans.
The rap war escalated to new heights, and three months later Shakur was shot to death in Las Vegas, with some wondering (though apparently incorrectly) whether the beef had anything to with it. And a few months after that, Biggie was shot dead in Los Angeles though his killer never apprehended.
Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s current rap beef has Boyd reflecting on the past.

Mark O’Brien makes an impressive filmmaking debut as writer, director and star of The Righteous (alongside Henry Czerny and Mimi Kuzyk), heading to Arrow on June 10th. As the subject of our latest Q&a, O'Brien talks about the film's black and white cinematography, its influences, and what's next!
The Righteous is a gorgeous film and one of its most striking elements is the use of black and white cinematography. What was the purpose behind the bold aesthetic?
This film appeared to me in black and white the day I began writing it. It was a natural progression from the words on the page, to the images in my head. The story is really about a man’s subconsciousness, what’s underneath, beneath the surface, psychologically. To me, our subconsciousness is murky and indecipherable. Color would bring too much reality and understanding to this story, which our lead character is lacking.

Exclusive: Luna Blaise (Manifest), Madison Pettis (Five Points), Charlie Gillespie (Julie And The Phantoms), Hart Denton (Riverdale), Greer Grammer (Awkward), Will Peltz (Unfriended), Daniella Perkins (Red Ruby) and Dylan Flashner (Lansky) are among the cast for coming-of-age drama Deltopia, which is currently in production in L.A.
The movie takes place over a period of 24 hours as a group of friends from Southern California finish their last day of high school and travel to Santa Barbara for “Deltopia,” the biggest party of their lives.
The film is loosely based on real events from the actual Deltopia, the annual unsanctioned street party held each spring in Isla Vista, Santa Barbara. In 2014, authorities arrested around 100 party-goers when the large event turned violent after one of the revellers was detained by police.
Writer-directors are Michael Easterling and Jaala Ruffman who have written and directed music videos and shorts for the likes of Machine Gun Kelly,...

On Monday night, attendees tuned in for the first ever virtual Oceana New York Gala to honor two-time Academy Award-winning actor, author, and activist Jane Fonda and to raise funds in support of Oceana’s campaigns to restore the world’s oceans.
Fonda, introduced by actor and 2019 Oceana New York Gala honoree Diane Lane, spoke about the threat climate change poses to the planet and how by protecting the oceans now, people can help fight back. “We’re scrambling now to save our planet, and the world’s oceans are our biggest ally in this fight. Not enough people understand the essential role the oceans play in combatting the climate crisis,” Fonda told attendees. “Everything depends on our succeeding in saving the oceans.”

The Piranha 3D soundtrack. Fish! Terrifying, aren’t they? Whadda you mean no? We’re not talking about a breadcrumb-coated bit of cod here – these are piranhas! The aquatic menace of choice for Bond villains seeking fishy means with which to punish those underlings unfortunate enough to have incurred their wrath.
Picking the songs for Piranha 3D was a task of balancing context against quality. After all, the human characters in Alexander Aja’s remake of the Corman-produced ’70s schlocker are a mix of spring breakers and porno performers, showcasing their well-honed bods and empty heads out on the beach. Given that then, how in the name of Captain Birdseye can the Piranha people possibly unearth music that will offer a decent listen and yet still correspond to a group of vacuous narcissists so objectionable that the movie in which they exist is asking its audience to take immense pleasure...

Some sequels are met with an eye roll and a deep sigh, as many of them are completely unnecessary. Did the world really need another "Sex and the City" movie or another entry in the "Shrek" franchise? On the other hand, some sequels are an excuse to see some old friends again. Such is the case with "Toy Story 3," the new animated feature from the hearts and minds of Pixar. The film — the first in the series since 1999's "Toy Story 2" — gets the old batch of toys back together for one more adventure. All the favorites are there, including Buzz Lightyear (voiced once again by Tim Allen) and Woody (given life by Tom Hanks). It's a lighthearted, fun film that utilizes its 3-D effects well and balances the perfect amount of childlike wonder and mature storytelling that Pixar does so incredibly well.

Corona & Lime - Shwayze The self-titled debut by Malibu "chill-hop" newcomer Shwayze is the aural equivalent of an episode of Entourage. Obsessed with babes, blunts, and beaches, it's relentlessly and proudly shallow, content to promote no agenda beyond having a good time with the brahs. It's a snapshot of a lifestyle that's envied by some and hated by more, which means the burden is on Shwayze to prove he's worthy of admiration. Unfortunately, Shwayze is remarkable only in how unremarkable it is. More of the blame for the album's mediocrity falls on the production, which comes courtesy of Cisco Adler, who's known more for the skanks he's boned (and perhaps for the MTV reality series Buzzin', starring him and Shwayze) than the music he's produced and made with the band Whitestarr. Shwayze has an appealing, laid-back...
